Description:Dr. Marisa G. Franco is back — and this time, she's turning the lens inward. Marisa is the New York Times bestselling author of Platonic and a psychologist at the University of Maryland, and her brand new book, Worth: The New Science of Self-Esteem and Secure Attachment, might just be the most important thing she's ever written. It is tender, personal, and research-backed in equal measure — and friend, it will find you.In this conversation, Marisa and Jen dig into the central argument of the book: that trying to become a "secure" person — calm, confident, regulated, healed — is one of the most efficient ways to stay stuck. The goal, Marisa says, is not security. It's being secure-ish. That means making room for the anxious parts and the avoidant parts, the shame and the neediness and the grief, and offering those parts the care they never got instead of running from them one more time.In this discussion, you'll also hear:Why the goal was never to be fully "secure" — and what it means to be secure-ish insteadWhy your insecurities are messengers, not enemies — and how to stop whack-a-moleing them into silenceThe memories that are keeping you stuck — and the science that proves you can actually change how they live in youThe messages installed in us by the wider world — faith, bodies, marriage, worth — and what it looks like to do this work when those messages came from somewhere we once considered holyAnd Marisa shares her own story, the one that cracked her open: a hike, a relationship unraveling, and the moment she finally stopped performing calm long enough to say the true thing out loud. This is a conversation for anyone who has been trying to be better than they are instead of being who they are. Which is to say — it's for all of us.Thought-provoking Quotes:“The struggle of not feeling worthy is that you're stuck in the same sense of reality. You're trapped and you don't know how to get out. People are loving you but you don't feel loved. The beauties of life slide off of you. I just want people to get free of that.” - Dr. Marisa G. Franco“We have to start with allowing what is, with the truth. So many of us don't think we can because we have to be something different than we are. But being where you are, that's where the healing happens.” - Dr. Marisa G. Franco“I'm still learning for my first reaction to no longer be, what am I allowed to feel according to other people? What am I allowed to look like according to other people? And for my first question to be what expresses who I am and how I actually feel, even if that violates all of the rules as to how I should feel or how I should present myself? That's where I need to begin, in the truth.” - Dr. Marisa G. Dr. Marisa Franco is back, and this time she's turning her attention from friendship to something underneath it: self-worth. Her new book, Worth: The New Science of Self-Esteem and Secure Attachment, starts with a confession. While her relationship was falling apart, she was performing security, saying all the right things, staying calm, doing everything the books tell you to do, while quietly abandoning what she actually felt. She and Dr. Joy talk through why that kind of self-abandonment is so familiar to Black women in particular, and what it costs us. The conversation moves through what Dr. Franco calls the difference between the good twin and the bad twin of high self-esteem, both of whom say they feel good about themselves, but only one of whom can sit with a hard feeling instead of pushing it away. She explains why insecurity isn't a flaw so much as a coping strategy our brains developed to protect us from repeat harm, and introduces memory reconsolidation, the idea that revisiting an old memory with care can actually change its emotional charge and help you feel safer moving forward. They also dig into stigma, identity stretching, and what happens when we spend our lives chronically evaluating ourselves against an ideal we didn't choose. Dr. Franco talks about raising kids with real self-worth instead of just confidence, why chasing achievement often keeps us from feeling anything at all, and what it means to aim for secure-ish instead of secure. Do you believe it when other people say, “You're worthy just because you exist,” or do you simply grimace, pretend you agree, and move forward? It can be difficult to have a real sense of self-worth. Not the kind that we advertise on social media with our highlight reels, but the genuine sense of self-worth: the way you treat yourself and, in turn, how you treat others. If you're a member of our community, you probably understand this feeling – maybe you've suffered grief, loss, tragedy, anxiety, depression, etc… Digging past the performative self-esteem and accessing true understanding of your own self-worth can feel – let's face it – impossible, especially when you're trying to just keep your head above water. Today, Nora is joined by Dr. Marisa Franco to help us all understand what self-worth and self-esteem truly are and how we can access them authentically to show up for ourselves and the people around us. What if low self-worth isn't something wrong with you—but your mind protecting you from being hurt again? AJ sits down with psychologist Dr. Marisa G. Franco to explore how past experiences shape the way we see ourselves, receive love, and react in relationships. They unpack why compliments can actually feel threatening, how unresolved “open memories” keep the past alive in the present, and why chasing confidence through achievement, validation, or attachment labels rarely heals the deeper issue. You'll learn a practical exercise for changing how painful memories live inside you, what to do when your body is triggered by something you can't consciously remember, and why acknowledging insecurity can actually be a sign of healthy self-worth. The goal isn't to eliminate difficult emotions—it's to stop abandoning yourself when they appear. Have you ever finally gotten something that you thought would make you feel worthy, like a degree or a promotion, and you still felt like you weren't good enough? Or maybe when someone gives you a genuine compliment, you feel worse instead of better. My guest is Dr. Marisa Franco, a psychologist, professor at the University of Maryland, and New York Times bestselling author. And she says we've been lied to about what really builds self-worth. But the good news is, once we learn the truth, we can all increase our self-worth without achieving more. What if the things we chase to feel worthy—success, achievement, appearance, approval—can't actually give us the worth we're looking for? Ginny sits down with psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Marisa Franco to explore the ideas behind her new book, Worth: The New Science of Self-Esteem and Secure Attachment. Dr. Franco explains why true self-worth isn't something we earn and why affirmations, compliments, and accomplishments can sometimes make people with low self-esteem feel even worse. They dive into the fascinating science of memory reconsolidation and how painful “open memories” from childhood and adulthood can continue shaping our relationships, emotions, and sense of self long after the event has passed. Dr. Franco shares practical ways to process those memories, work with emotions stored in the body, and become not perfectly secure—but “secure-ish.” They also explore parenting, attachment, trauma, friendship, and how technology can keep us from sitting with the very emotions that may be pointing us toward healing and deeper human connection. If love makes you suspicious, compliments make you uncomfortable, and happiness makes you wait for something bad to happen…this episode might explain your entire life. Because what if your insecurity isn't a personality flaw? What if your brain learned, somewhere along the way, that feeling good about yourself is dangerous? Psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Marisa Franco is back with fascinating new science about why insecurity can survive years of therapy, affirmations, self-help, and “working on yourself” (and what can finally begin to change it). Here's the mind-bending part: Your memories don't just record your past. They predict your future. And when your brain expects rejection, humiliation, or abandonment, even love and success can feel threatening. But those old memories aren't necessarily fixed. Dr. Franco explains how the science of memory reconsolidation may help change the way the past continues to live inside you. You'll learn: Why compliments, love, and success can actually make you feel worse Why you can feel deeply insecure even when you can't explain why How old memories can quietly shape what you expect from yourself and others How memory reconsolidation can begin changing the emotional impact of the past Why affirmations sometimes backfire when you have low self-worth How to recognize when deeper support may be the right next step If you've spent years trying to “love yourself” and wondering why nothing seems to stick, you need to hear this. You may not need another pep talk. You may finally need to understand what your brain has been trying to protect you from. Xoxo, Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby Growing Self P.S. So much of the self-help world teaches us that the solution to our problems is to become a better, more healed, more secure version of ourselves. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Marisa G. Franco, author of Worth: The New Science of Self-Esteem and Secure Attachment, to challenge that idea and talk about why self-worth starts with acknowledging who you actually are, not trying to erase the parts of yourself you do not like.Dr. Franco and I talk about why insecurities are not proof that something is wrong with you, how striving to be “securely attached” can become another form of self-rejection, and why acknowledging your full internal experience is the first step toward change. Listen in to learn why healing is not about becoming someone else, but about creating a relationship with yourself where you can acknowledge the full truth of who you are and still know you are worthy.Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: https://schoolofnewfeministthought.com/524Watch episodes over on YouTube: youtube.com/@karaloewentheilcoachingFollow along on Instagram: instagram.com/karaloewentheil/Learn more about Dr. Franco's books and work: https://drmarisagfranco.com/Mentioned in this episode:We're Hiring a Marketing ManagerGo to unfuckyourbrain.com/hiring to learn more.FREE LIVE WORKSHOP: The One Big AskIn one free hour, find the ask most worth making, assess exactly what's blocking you, and learn what it takes to speak up anyway. Description:For twenty years, one question has followed Jen everywhere she goes: what am I supposed to be doing with my life? It comes in the comments, the voicemails, the line after every event. And for a long time, Jen answered it like a career question, as if somewhere out there was a slot with her name on it and her only job was to find it and climb inside. In this solo episode, she puts down the word calling and picks up a different one: assignment. Not the thing waiting for you in the future, but the work already in your hands, in this season, on this street, with these people. Jen untangles work from worth, names the theology a lot of us absorbed that rewarded us for burning out, and shares the questions she uses to tell the difference between an assignment that is actually hers and one that is simply available. She also talks about the assignments that end, and why finishing one well is its own sacred work.Ordinary, faithful, unglamorous work is not the consolation prize for people who never found their capital C calling. It is the actual thing. This episode kicks off September's theme, Sacred Work, here on the show and over in the AWAKE Collective.Thought-provoking Quotes:"I have stopped asking what my calling is altogether. I started asking what my assignment is." - Jen Hatmaker"Sacred work is not a waiting room for a more important life that hasn't started yet." - Jen Hatmaker"The paycheck is not the assignment. The paycheck funds the life where the assignment happens." - Jen Hatmaker"Burnout is not evidence that you are on assignment. More likely it is evidence that you have taken on someone else's assignment." - Jen Hatmaker"A real assignment will cost you something. But an obligation costs you yourself. That's not the same bill." - Jen Hatmaker"Something does not have to be bad for it to be over." - Jen HatmakerResources Mentioned in This Episode:This month's Sacred Work lineup: Priya Parker, Dr. Marisa Franco, Zibby Owens, plus encore conversations with Barbara Brown Taylor and Mary PipherWorth by Dr. Marisa FrancoThe AWAKE Collective monthly reflection guide. Every person in your life is telling you the truth about themselves right now, just not with their mouth. That is the filter I open this weekend mashup with, and it is why I brought together some of the sharpest minds I know on reading people, building real confidence and telling the difference between someone who loves you and someone who is just good at saying it. Dr. Marisa Franco is breaking down the actual research on why some friendships take root and others fade. Brendon Burchard and I get into the two small promises I started keeping to myself and how the habit of keeping tiny commitments directly relates to whether you can trust a person or not. Then you hear the raw truth from a man who finished Navy SEAL training, Army Ranger School and Air Force tech school in one lifetime, David Goggins, describing the 19 hours that broke him down and rebuilt him at the same time. What he says about the people from his old life who still want to pull him back will stick with you. Here's what you'll walk away with: Filter test: the exact shift in how you watch people that tells you instantly who is real. Friendship science: why the group you show up to again and again matters more than how the first meeting felt. Confidence rebuild: the two tiny promises that pulled me out of my lowest point. The cookie jar: how to reach for proof of your own toughness when your body wants to quit. The lens flip: one question that will change how every person in your life experiences you. I have spent the past few years listening less and watching more, and every relationship in my life is better for it. Watch the people around you this week instead of just listening to them, and you will already understand more about your life than you did yesterday.

We also talk about how our own self-worth impacts the way we show up for our kids and how we can help the next generation build a healthier relationship with themselves.Key Topics CoveredWhy insecurity can actually be an adaptive responseHow attachment theory can become another form of perfectionismWhy some people struggle to receive complimentsThe connection between self-worth, memories, and our emotional responsesHow to recognize, regulate, and respond to difficult emotionsCONNECT WITH DR. Friendship is one of the topics we get asked about most, so we brought back Dr. Marisa Franco, one of the world's leading voices on human connection. We dive straight into the heart of modern friendship and start with something that influences every relationship we have: attachment styles. Marisa explains how these patterns begin in childhood, how they show up differently in adulthood, and why none of us fit neatly into one category. We explore one of the biggest questions we hear from listeners: if you tend to be anxious or avoidant, do you end up attracting friends with the same tendencies? Marisa shares one of her biggest challenges in her research—secure people continue to find each other easily, while those who struggle with connection often repeat the same patterns with similar types of friends.Since many of you are new moms or navigating school-aged seasons, we ask Marisa what to do when a friend needs more from you than you can realistically give. She reminds us that it's okay to say no and that saying no with kindness helps preserve the relationship.Although friendship looks natural from the outside, we share honestly that it hasn't always been effortless for us either. Amy opens up about how isolating early motherhood felt and why making new friends during that time was unexpectedly hard. If you're in a season where friendship feels like it has to fall to the bottom of the list, Marisa offers a powerful reminder of why connection still matters—and what small steps can help bring it back to the forefront. Finally, we talk about the hardest part of friendship: knowing when it's time to end one. Should you let the relationship fade or have a more direct conversation? Marisa shares how to discern which path is right, and she gives guidance on something we rarely talk about—grieving a friendship.LINKS AND RESOURCES:Listen to HERself episode #145 Dr. Marisa Franco on the Importance of Adult Friendship; https://www.herselfpodcast.com/listen/adultfriendshipRead Dr. Marisa Franco's Book; Platonic: https://amzlink.to/az0lb2DLKWeWk Follow Marisa on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmarisagfranco/Dr. Marisa's Website: https://drmarisagfranco.com/HERSELF PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/herselfpodcastLMNT: Free Sample Pack with purchase:  drinkLMNT.com/HERSELFLet's connect!HERSELF INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/herselfpodcastMEET AMY: http://instagram.com/ameskieferMEET ABBY: http://instagram.com/abbyrosegreenThis episode was brought to you by the Pivot Ball Change Network.

We all have twenty four hours in a day. And when your plate is full with things like a romantic relationship, kids, a career, keeping up your home and taking care of pets, friends, and other obligations, every piece on that plate gets a designated amount of your time. Some seasons of life, the time you have for friends is plentiful - thinking back to our youth with school friends, college friends, and friends at your first job. Friendships came easily then because you had the time to pour into them. Now as adults, it can be hard to find the time to create new and meaningful friendships or keep existing friendships going. Today on the podcast, we are sitting down to have a conversation about our experiences with friendships through our seasons of life. We share the concept about friendship “tiers” and how that relates to our new and existing relationships, our most important values in friendship, and what we feel about friendships with the opposite sex. Our goal is that after listening to today's episode, you feel hopeful that whether your friendship cup is big or small for your current season of life, that your cup can be full!Links & Resources:Free Shipping at GOODR with code ‘HERSELF'20% off your first purchase of Vuori ClothingCheck out Maui Nui Venison and the limited HERself collection30% off your first order of Cornbread Hemp using code ‘HERSELF'Episode “59: HERself Expert: Dr. Marisa Franco on the Challenges and Triumphs of Adult Friendships”KU Med professor, J. How does the patriarchy shape women's thoughts and actions, often without them realizing it? In this episode, Gabe Howard sits down with feminist thought leader Kara Loewentheil to discuss how patriarchal conditioning impacts women, both at work and at home. Kara explains the concept of the “brain gap” — the internal conflict between societal expectations and personal beliefs — and how women can work toward overcoming it. Through practical tools like her “10% Less (Crappy) Thought” technique, she helps listeners begin the journey of unlearning toxic thought patterns. This conversation digs into the subtle, often unnoticed ways sexism shapes women's everyday lives and offers actionable advice on how to reclaim their mental freedom and build stronger mental health. Listen now! “We're all making a deal with the devil to some extent, like I think beauty norms are patriarchal and oppressive. And also I'm about to go on a book tour, so I'm going to get a lash lift, like, because I'm going to have a lot of photos taken and I don't actually like to do makeup. And yet I want my eyes to stand out in photos. I think people assume that if you're a feminist, you are like a kind of purist ideologue. And that is not the case for me or most of the women I work with.” ~Kara Loewentheil To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Our guest, Kara Loewentheil, J.D., is a Master Certified Life Coach, founder of The School of New Feminist Thought, and host of the internationally top-ranked podcast UnF*ck Your Brain: Feminist Self-Help for Everyone (50 million downloads and counting!).  Her first book, Take Back Your Brain: How A Sexist Society Gets in Your Head – and How to Get It Out (Penguin Life May 2024) has been called a “galvanizing debut” by Publisher's Weekly, chosen as a “must-read” by the Next Big Ideas Book Club for May 2024, and praised by NYT-bestselling authors including Mel Robbins, Elise Loehnen, Dr. Marisa Franco, and Tori Dunlap.  A graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School, Kara did what every Ivy League lawyer should do: Quit a prestigious academic career to become a life coach! Eight years after she stepped down as director of a think tank at Columbia Law School, she has created a seven-figure business, taught millions of women how to identify the ways that sexist socialization impacts their brains, and helped women all over the world rewire their thought patterns to liberate themselves from the inside out.  Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. Hey friends, we are back with another episode in our For the Love of Community & Friendships, and we happen to have a true friend of the show returning to lay down some expertise about what it means to make and keep friends. We're delighted to have Dr. Marisa Franco, (who also partnered with Jen to create a MeCourse on Friendship) who delves into the fascinating world of friendship attachment styles. Dr. Franco shares her extensive knowledge and insights on how our attachment styles, often formed during our early years, can significantly influence the type of friendships we form as adults. She discusses the three main types of attachment styles—secure, avoidant, and anxious—and explains how understanding our own style can help us navigate our friendships more effectively. Jen and Marisa touch on: How the three main types of attachment styles can change over time as we typically become more secure as we mature How, when we're younger, we tend to have more friends (and friends who are very similar to us) as we look to expand our identity, and when we become more solid in our identity, we're more open to be friends with people who are different from us Why friendship doesn't just typically “happen,”--it takes effort, and some ways you can put yourself out there to make new friends, and how to do the work to keep the friends you already have How to approach conflict in friendship where we kindly share our needs with a spirit of reconciliation over an attitude of defensiveness  * * * Thank you to our sponsors! If you're more avoidant and you don't have any power, you don't have any agency because all the issues are out in the world.” - Dr. Marisa Franco “I think if we can understand our attachment styles, we have more agency, we have more control, we can shift our behaviors and we can find the relationships that we really want.” - Dr. Marisa Franco “People are a lot more likely to be friends with people that are similar to them. It's called homophily. The value of these similar relationships is they do make us feel very safe.” - Dr. Marisa Franco “We see in the research that people who see friendship as happening without effort are more likely to be lonely five years later. People that see it as requiring effort are less likely to be lonely five years later.” - Dr. Marisa Franco “What we see in the research is that when people try to reconnect with someone, that person is happier to receive that reconnection than we predict.” - Dr. Marisa Franco  “In a healthy conflict, I think of; what does this conflict look like without blame? What if I go into here not trying to blame this person, not trying to even assume that they were trying to intentionally hurt me. So then, how do I navigate it with that being what's going on in my head?” - Dr. Marisa Franco Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Platonic How The Science of Attachment Can Help You Make and Keep Friends a book by Dr. Marisa Franco Guest's Links: Dr. Franco's Website  Dr. Franco's Instagram  Dr. Franco's Facebook Dr. Franco's Twitter Dr. Franco's Psychology Today Connect with Jen!
