Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/688 Presented By:   Grand Teton Fly Fishing Scott Smith, owner of Grand Teton Fly Fishing, takes us on a journey through the Yellowstone area. We'll uncover tips for fishing the area's rivers, learn about pre-hatches, and hear Scott's biggest tip for landing those tricky fish sipping bugs off the surface. Plus, Scott will also share stories about his mentor, Jack Dennis. This is going to be a good one! Show Notes with Scott Smith on Grand Teton Fly Fishing.  02:03 - Scott grew up fishing creeks in North Georgia. Fly fishing for him came later when he picked up a rod at 12 at a garage sale and taught himself through magazines and VHS tapes. He eventually met Jack Dennis, who became his mentor. Check out our episode with Jack Dennis. Starting Grand Teton Fly Fishing 05:52 - Scott moved to Jackson Hole in the late '90s. Over the years, he built a career, mentored new guides, and created a loyal client base. In 2011, he and Mark Fuller took over Jack Dennis' business and started Grand Teton Fly Fishing. 11:55 - Scott tells us about the waters they guide in western Wyoming. They cover Yellowstone National Park's lakes to Grand Teton National Park's Snake River headwaters. Scott says they customize trips based on how long guests stay and what they want to do. Fishing in Jackson Hole 15:41 - We hear about what fishing looks like throughout the year in Jackson Hole. Scott says they do a lot of drift boat fishing to cover large rivers like the Snake, but there's still plenty of wade fishing when the conditions are right. March to October is the best fishing season, with good hatches and fewer crowds.  Early March is great for dry fly fishing, especially with midges and blue-winged olives. The peak fishing season starts in mid-June and continues in July through September. Fishing in September and October 23:20 - We talk about the fishing conditions in September and October. As the water cools down, the fishing gets better, with some great hatches like the Hecuba fly. Scott says this is also when the Jackson Hole One Fly event usually happens.  28:09 - Scott says that the Snake River is both forgiving for new anglers and challenging for experts. The Snake River is home to the Snake River Fine-Spotted Cutthroat,  a subspecies of the Yellowstone cutthroat.  34:52 - Scott says that when he's guiding, he always looks for spots where fish are likely to be. The key is looking for subtle sips, usually signs of bigger fish feeding.  40:10 - If you're not seeing much action on the surface, Scott suggests switching to attractor patterns or terrestrials like beetles and ants. You can also add a dropper fly, but it might limit how close you can fish to the bank. Scott's Top 8 Fly Patterns 1. Small chubby (black, purple, tan)  2. Small black foam flies  3. Dcn. Harrison Garlick and Adam Minihan discuss Book 22 on the Death of Hector. “There are no binding oaths between men and lions—wolves and lambs can enjoy no meeting of the minds—they are all bent on hating each other to death.” Achilles (22.310). 97. What happens in book twenty-two? The Trojans scurry back into the city like “panicked fawns,” while Hector remains outside the walls (22.05). Apollo, who had taken the form of a Trojan soldier to make Achilles chase him, reveals his trickery to Achilles (22.09)—and Achilles turns back to the city (22.26). Despite the pleas of Priam (22.31) and Hecuba (22.93), Hector remains outside the walls “nursing his quenchless fury” (22.115). As Achilles approaches, Hector's courage fails, and he begins to run around the walls of Troy with Achilles in pursuit (22.163). Zeus' “heart grieves for Hector,” (22.202), but he gives permission to Athena to do as she wills (22.220). Hector tries to enter the city, but Achilles thwarts him (22.234). Achilles also holds back the Achaean army, now observing the chase, from intervening (22.245). Zeus once again holds out his golden scales, and fate elects that it is time for Hector to die (22.249).Athena takes on the form of Deiphobus, brother of Hector, and convinces Hector to stand together and fight Achilles (22.271). Hector faces Achilles and tries to make a pact that the victor will not mutilate the corpse of the fallen but give it to his people for burial (22.301). Achilles rejects this offer, stating: “There are no binding oaths between men and lions—wolves and lambs can enjoy no meeting of the minds—they are all bent on hating each other to death” (22.310). Hector and Achilles clash in combat, and Hector calls to his brother, Deiphobus, for help—but there is no answer (22.347). Hector realizes the gods have tricked him and that his time has come (22.350). He elects to die in glory, and he charges Achilles (22.359). Achilles strikes down Hector and tells him: “The dogs and birds will maul you” (22.395). Hector pleads to be given to his people, but Achilles rejects him saying: “My fury would drive me now to hack your flesh away and eat you raw” (22.408). Hector prophesies that “Paris and Lord Apollo” will strike down Achilles outside of Troy (22.423). Hector dies (22.425). The Achaeans all stab his body (22.437), and Achilles drags it behind his chariot (22.466). Priam and Hecuba cry out for their son (22.478), and Andromache “bursts out in grief” (22.560). The book ends with Andromache lamenting the impending fate of her son, Astyanax, the little “Lord of the City” (22.569). 98. What structure does piety give the death of Hector?Previously, Hector's return to Troy provided an insight into the ancient threefold notion of piety: gratitude toward the gods, the city, and the family. It is a gratitude that precipitates a sense of duty. The threefold notion of piety—which is in a hierarchal order—appears to provide a certain infrastructure (and tension) to the narrative around Hector's death. For example, Hector disregards the appeals of his parents, Priam (22.32) and Hecuba (22.93), to retreat to the walls of Troy presumably due to his duty to defend Troy (22.129). Hector's piety toward the gods is praised by Zeus in the same conversation in which the son of Cronus orchestrates his death (22.129). It is notable the deception of Hector comes through his comradery toward another soldier of Troy and a familial relation, his brother (22.270). It further raises the question that for all Hector's piety toward Troy, no one seems interested in helping him. Hector, who is...

The Pharisees, often seen as opponents of Jesus give him a warning about a mutual enemy, Herod Anitpas. He apparently wants Jesus dead. Jesus' reply is not one of flattery, referring to him as a fox. In rabbinic literature, the fox was a contrast to the mighty lion, connected to deception and preying on the “chicks” to which Jesus refers. Jesus stands firm declaring what he is called to do, come what may.  His resolve then gives way to sorrow as he cries out, “ … how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate.” This cry echoes the words found on the lips of Hecuba in the work of Euripides penned some 500 years before. A cry of lament upon seeing the city of Troy destroyed. This points toward the prophetic word Jesus speaks, his understanding that Jerusalem, like Troy will be destroyed. And Jesus' response? Sorrow for all of those who call Jerusalem home.  In our current cultural moment, “speaking truth to power” often comes with an edge. This in contrast with the heart we see in Jesus – one that is broken and heavy for others. Maybe this is the picture we need to grapple with asking ourselves if we have sorrow for others in the manner and the way Jesus did.

Deacon Harrison Garlick and Adam Minihan sit down to talk about Hector returning to Troy.In this episode we will discuss:What happens in book six? What should be noted in the duel between Glaucus and Diomedes? What may be noted in Helen's lament to Prince Hector? What lesson does Homer provide by Hector returning to Troy?Is Homer presenting Hector as a virtuous character?Book SixHector Returns to TroyAlways be the best, my boy, the bravest, and hold your head up high above the others. Never disgrace the generation of your fathers.Hippolochus to Glaucus, his son (6.247)35. What happens in book six of the Iliad?Pressed against an Achaean advance led by Ajax and Diomedes, Hector and Aeneas receive word of an omen from Helenus, son of Priam, the seer (6.88). The Trojan army is to hold the line, while Hector is to return to Troy and direct his mother, the queen of Troy, to arrange a sacrifice to Athena—a sacrifice to entice the goddess of wisdom to pity Troy and hold back Diomedes (6.102). Hector obeys and returns to the palace of Priam—a magnificent structure that houses the fifty sons and twelve daughters of King Priam (6.291). Hector tells Hecuba, his mother and queen of Troy, to perform the sacrifice (6.318). It is notable that she is to lay before Athena the robe she personally prizes the most, which illuminates the personal sacrifice being ask of her (6.323). Hecuba obeys, but Athena refuses to listen to the Trojan prayers (6.366). It is not unremarkable that Homer immediately follows Athena's rejection with the introduction of Paris into the narrative (6.368). Hector chastises Paris—who has remained in his bedroom since his duel with Menelaus—and exhorts him to return to the war (6.383). Before returning to the war, Hector visits his wife, Andromache, and his son Scamandrius, who the Trojans affectionately call the “Lord of the City” (6.477). Hector then rendezvouses with his brother, Paris, and returns to fight the Achaeans (6.601).36. What should be noted in the duel between Glaucus and Diomedes? After we see Hector begins his return to Troy, we are introduced to the duel between Glaucus, the Trojan, and Diomedes, the Achaean (6.138). Diomedes, whom Homer gives the epithet usually reserved for Menelaus—“the lord of the war cry”—taunts his opponent but notably gives the caveat he will not fight a deathless god in disguise (6.148). He is still obedient to Athena's command to not fight the gods—save Aphrodite (5.142). At first, Glaucus provides a somewhat nihilistic response, stating, in part, “like the generations of leaves, the lives of mortal men” (6.171). He then, however, begins his lineage with Sisyphus, “the wiliest man alive,” who is a prominent figure in Greek mythology (6.180). To wit, Sisyphus had a habit of wanting to outsmart the gods, and this resulted in him being damned to Hades to roll a stone up a hill (only to have it roll back down) for all eternity. His son, Glaucus (the great-grandfather of the Glaucus dueling Diomedes) decided to habituate his horses to eating “human flesh to make them fierce in battle.” For this horrific act, the gods ensured Glaucus was tossed from his chariot and devoured by his own horses. His son Bellerophon, who may have been sired by Poseidon instead, is a classic hero in Greek mythology. The narrative of Antea being unable to seduce Bellerophon but then blaming him for lusting after her (6.188) bears many similarities with the Hebrew story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife (Gen 39:5-20). Bellerophon carries his own death sentence to Antea's father, and the...

This is just the previously released four episodes of MC's Homeric Cycle combined into one episode for your listening convenience. In these podcasts, you'll hear the Homeric cycle in a generally linear, episodic, but decidedly non-academic and at times rather breezy version of Homer's epic saga, as if MC were a Greek rhapsode narrating it to you around a campfire outside the classroom, sort of authentic to the oral tradition, decidely low tech. Again, the Homeric Cycle is the Iliad and the Odyssey and all the sidebars, digressions and ancillary stories that orbit the two epics. But in my cycle, I have not yet gotten to the Odyssey, primarily because that story has been told and taught ad nauseam, whereas the Iliad, in my humble opinio, deserves a little more treatmentn. Episode 1 includes a brief introduction to the Cycle in toto, then lays out the prequel to the Iliad: the Golden Apple of Discord, the Judgment of Paris and its fallout, Helen of Sparta and the tricky enlistment of Achilles and Odysseus into the Greek war effort. Episode 2 moves forward through the challenges the Greeks, Agamemnon primarily, face launching the thousand ships to wage war on Troy and retrieve Helen, then, having reached Troy, the discord among the Greeks that leads to the rage of Achilles, the showdown between the offending Paris and the offended Menelaus, and an aristeia of Diomedes involving the gods, as well as an interesting sidebar that forms part of the Homeric tradition. Much of Episode 3 hews to the story line of the Iliad, meaning the focus is on the latter stages of the rage of Achilles and its tragic consequences but ultimately also its glorious aftermath. Patrokles and Hector are key elements but an outraged river also makes an appearance? The destructive nature of excess and the paramount importance of honor are the beating hearts of this episode. This last episode in the series highlights events beyond the scope of the Iliad but which are definitely within the Cycle. First and foremost, Achilles's death. The Iliad itself ends with the death of Hector, not Achilles, yet as foretold, Achilles's end must follow hard on the heels, as it were, of Hector's. This episode also answers questions you may have about various other participants: Menelaus, Agamemnon, Philoctetes, Diomedes, Helen, Paris, Laocoon, Priam, Hecuba, Cassandra, Aeneas, Criseis & Briseis. What happens to Ajax is particularly heartbreaking, IMHO. You may wonder if there is more in store for members of the cursed house of Atreus? Fo sho! The house is fodder for much of Greek tragedy. And of course, the elephant in the room, as it were, the Trojan Horse and the fall of Troy after ten years of war. It is strange and twisty, the Homeric Cycle. Hope you enjoy and thanks for listening. MC.

As the company takes up residence in the former Royal Arsenal buildings of Woolwich, their first permanent space, they draw on the Greek tragedies of Agamemnon and Hecuba to reinterpret the Trojan war as a dystopian future noir. The French comedy drama, Call My Agent, was one of the breakout hits of lockdown. It has spawned a Turkish version, an Indian version, and now an English version called Ten Percent. John Morton, the creator of BBC mockumentaries Twenty Twelve and W1A, joins Front Row to discuss the challenge of recreating the Parisian series in London. Come join us for a lively conversation with artist Grace Zofia Alberti. Flying high off of her/they turn as a writer last season, she/they wrote the stunning Stella, she/they are participating in this season's festival as an actor. Have a ball listening in as she/they dive into her/their process and talks about where she/they hope to go with her/their artistry in the years to come! My name is Grace Zofia Alberti. I am a second year in Playwrights Horizons Theatre School as well as a Creative Writing minor in CAS. I am (ahem) a multi-hyphenate, as they call us - I really, fully enjoy every single aspect of theatre, from directing to design to performing to writing to stage management to publicity to dramaturgy to whatevertheheck. It is all my favorite. As a kid, I performed in lots of embarrassing community, school, and children's theatre, but in 2016, at the age of 15, I figured out that while I LOVED theatre, I was very, very bored by it in the way it had been made available to me, and thus, started a non-profit theatre company with my friends called Ad Astra Theatre Troupe (www.adastratroupe.org)! With it, I directed two shows, a production of Peter/Wendy by Jeremy Bloom in 2017, and a play I co-wrote called Uprising with Lale Davidson and Jul LeCours (my now writing partner) in 2018. We were invited to tour Uprising to two other venues later that year, and the play is now in the process of being re-drafted as we feel Older and Smarter than our teenage writer selves. In 2019, Ad Astra performed an adaptation of Trojan Women by Jul LeCours and Padraig Bond, in which I was both producer and Hecuba. Last winter, pre-COVID, Jul (my writing partner) and I ran a two-session writing workshop with the company, and they're still making work, having been passed on to younger students. Ad Astra's 5th season is currently in motion! Since then, it's been mostly college theatre nonsense (co-direction of the play Earthquakes in London with My Le), you, my Broke Theatre Fest (Actor - Complementary, something rather than nothing; Writer - Stella), and some voice over work for Jul's animated play if this is bad don't tell me, available on YouTube

Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University Podcasts

In the tradition of women as the unsung keepers of history, Deborah Paredez’s second poetry collection tells her story as a Latina daughter of the Vietnam War. The title refers to the year 1970—the Year of the Metal Dog in the lunar calendar—which was the year of the author’s birth, the year her father prepared to deploy to Vietnam along with many other Mexican-American immigrant soldiers, and a year of tremendous upheaval across the United States. Images from iconic photographs and her father’s snapshots are incorporated, fragmented, scrutinized, and reconstructed throughout the collection as Paredez recalls untold stories from a war that changed her family and the nation. In poems and lamentations that evoke Hecuba, the mythic figure so consumed by grief over the atrocities of war that she was transformed into a howling dog, and La Llorona, the weeping woman in Mexican folklore who haunts the riverbanks in mourning and threatens to disturb the complicity of those living in the present, Paredez recontextualizes the Vietnam era, from the arrest of Angela Davis to the haunting image of Mary Ann Vecchio at the Kent State Massacre, never forgetting the outcry and outrage that women’s voices have carried across time.

Welcome to the second part of our discussion of Euripides’ The Trojan Women here on The Literary Life podcast. This week Angelina, Cindy and Thomas really get into the meat of the play. If you missed last week’s introduction episode, you will want to go back and listen to that first to set the stage, so to speak. Cindy and Angelina talk about how much emotion is evoked by Euripides’ portrayal of these women and their situation. Thomas brings in some of the surrounding myths that connect to the characters in this play, as well. Angelina and Cindy highlight the characteristics of Hecuba and Andromache amidst such trying circumstances. In discussing Helen’s role in the play, Cindy mentions a short story C. S. Lewis wrote about Helen of Troy called “After Ten Years.” It can be found in The Dark Tower: and Other Stories and Of Other Worlds: Essays and Stories. Our hosts share their emotional responses to the utter heartbreak of the mothers on top of the demise of Troy itself. (Amazon affiliate links are used in this content.) Commonplace Quotes: There are decades where nothing happens, and weeks where decades happen. Vladimir Lenin While affording some secrets of ‘the way of the will’ to young people, we should perhaps beware of presenting the ideas of ‘self-knowledge, self-reverence, and self-control.’ All adequate education must be outward bound, and the mind which is concentrated upon self-emolument, even though it be the emolument of all the virtues, misses the higher and the simpler secrets of life. Duty and service are the sufficient motives for the arduous training of the will that a child goes through with little consciousness. Charlotte Mason Perhaps the surest measure of O’Connor’s sense of calling was her willingness to be misunderstood. Jonathan Rogers All the World’s a Stage by William Shakespeare All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first the infant, Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms; And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school. And then the lover, Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard, Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel, Seeking the bubble reputation Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice, In fair round belly with good capon lin’d, With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon, With spectacles on nose and pouch on side; His youthful hose, well sav’d, a world too wide For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice, Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion; Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything. Zwar konnte Kassandra nach wie vor die Zukunft sehen, jedoch niemand sollte je ihren Vorhersagen Glauben schenken. Durch den Fluch von Apollo begann Kassandra an ihrem Selbstwert zu zweifeln. Part One: For the Sake of Gold Forty years ago, Dorothea (Tyne Daly) and Greta (Elisabeth Henry) moved to the town of Checkford and bought an abandoned bread factory that they transformed into an arts space. Here they host movies, plays, dance, exhibits and artists. It’s where civic groups and immigrant communities can meet, where there are after school programs for children. Now a celebrity couple—performance artists from China—have come to Checkford. They’ve constructed a huge building, the FEEL Institute, down the street. It is a strange sight for a small town. Dorothea and Greta learn about a new proposal to give all the funding from the school system for their children’s arts programs to the FEEL Institute. Without this funding, the Bread Factory would not survive. They quickly rally the community to save their space. The commercial forces behind the FEEL Institute fight also, bringing a young movie star to town to help make their case. The school board meeting turns into a circus where the fate of the Bread Factory hangs in the balance. A Bread Factory, Part Two: Walk with Me a While Checkford hasn’t been the same since the school board meeting. Mysteriously, the reporter who runs the local newspaper disappears. Bizarre tourists start to show up, then come mysterious tech start-up workers. With all the new people, real estate is booming. Amidst all these distractions, Dorothea and Greta try to continue their work. They are rehearsing a production of HECUBA by Euripides. On the day they open the play, Dorothea gets the news that the Bread Factory will lose an essential piece of their funding. The beautiful opening night performance of HECUBA plays to a tiny audience. Brokenhearted, Dorothea and Greta must decide whether to give up their work at the Bread Factory because their community and support has disappeared, or to continue in their struggle to build community through art. Patrick Wang was born in Texas, the son of Taiwanese immigrants. He graduated from MIT with a degree in economics and music and theater arts. He has studied game theory, health policy, and income inequality at the Federal Reserve, the Harvard School for Public Health, and other organizations. He is author of the books THE MONOLOGUE PLAYS and POST SCRIPT, an interactive book about the making of THE GRIEF OF OTHERS. His first film IN THE FAMILY was released to critical acclaim in the US and France and hailed “an indie masterpiece” by Roger Ebert. He was named one of the "25 New Faces of Independent Film" by Filmmaker Magazine, and the New York Times remarked, “This is a career to keep an eye on.” Director and writer Patrick Wang joins us for a conversation on his brilliant, funny, touching, humanist rumination on art, relationships and MAY RAY. When someone doesn't agree with you, is it just a disagreement that leads to a vigorous and healthy debate? Or, as far as you're concerned, they're just wrong? In this episode you'll hear how we can make better decisions through conflict and consensus. Follow Michael on his blog or check out his offerings at The Great Courses. Thank you for joining me for this episode of The People and Projects Podcast! Have a great week!
