In this episode, the Bruthas commiserate about the shocking news of Chadwich Boseman’s death and fondly remember his incredible movie career playing such black icons as Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Thurgood Marshall and, of course, Black Panther. Wakanda forever! Also, the Bruthas say their goodbyes to legendary college basketball coach, John Thompson. The Bruthas also discuss the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin and the after-effects it caused in professional sports; in particular, the short-lived NBA walkout. The Bruthas also discuss the role of President Obama in bringing the players back on the court and give some interesting perspectives on Obama’s impact as an elder statesman for the black community during the Black Lives Matter era. The Bruthas also discuss the latest incident of a white woman attempted to pass herself off as black and debate the role that white allies play in black liberation. Furthermore, they discuss whether or not, the black community is doing enough to incentivize their participation in the struggle in light of the tremendous incentive that black folks are provided to uphold white supremacy. Finally, we discuss the latest reports that R. Kelly was the victim of an assault while in jail awaiting trial. This prompts the beginnings of a discussion on the culture of toxic masculinity that produces men who view exploiting women as our “reward” for professional success.

On August 28, 2020, actor Chadwick Boseman died. He was only 43 years old. Unbeknownst to many, even some of his closest collaborators, he’d been battling colon cancer since 2016. His family released a statement, and in it, they said, "It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther." After hearing the news, I went back and re-watched the movie, and I don’t know, it was a completely different experience this time. I went and listened to the score again, and that had changed for me, too. So, I wanted to back and share this episode from 2018, about a piece of the film’s score by composer Ludwig Göransson. It’s one of my favorites, and since it first aired, Ludwig went on to win the Grammy and Oscar for the Black Panther score. I hope you enjoy this re-visiting this episode, and I hope it makes you remember how great Black Panther is, and how great Chadwick Boseman is in it, in a role that defined a career that was way too short. · · ·  Marvel’s Black Panther was released in theaters on February 16, 2018, and in just a few weeks, it made over a billion dollars worldwide. It’s already broken some box office records and it looks like it’s going to break some more. The score for the film was created by Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson. His film and tv credits include Creed and New Girl. He’s also Grammy-nominated producer, who’s worked most often with rapper Childish Gambino. In this episode, Ludwig takes apart one of his pieces from Black Panther. The track is called "Killmonger," and it’s the theme for Erik Killmonger, a character played by Michael B. Jordan. Black Panther is set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda, and coming up, Ludwig tells the story of doing research and making recordings in Africa, and how he incorporated that into the score for the film. This is the audio from our recent YouTube livestream where we celebrated the impact of Chadwick Boseman. https://youtu.be/f0oPskY2t14 Chadwick Aaron Boseman was born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina, to Carolyn and Leroy Boseman, both African American. According to Boseman, DNA testing indicated that his ancestors were Krio people from Sierra Leone, Yoruba people from Nigeria and Limba people from Sierra Leone. His mother was a nurse and his father worked at a textile factory, managing an upholstery business as well. Boseman graduated from T. L. Hanna High School in 1995. In his junior year, he wrote his first play, Crossroads, and staged it at the school after a classmate was shot and killed. Boseman attended college at Howard University in Washington, D.C., graduating in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing. One of his teachers was Phylicia Rashad, who became a mentor. She helped raise funds, notably from her friend and prominent actor Denzel Washington so that Boseman and some classmates could attend the Oxford Mid-Summer Program of the British American Drama Academy in London, to which they had been accepted. Boseman wanted to write and direct, and initially began studying acting to learn how to relate to actors. After he returned to the U.S., he graduated from New York City's Digital Film Academy. He lived in Brooklyn at the start of his career. Boseman worked as the drama instructor in the Schomburg Junior Scholars Program, housed at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, New York. In 2008, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

In this special Quarantine Edition of #RogueTheory, Filup Molina, Erik Voss, Tommy Bechtold, and special guest Matt Raub remotely go rogue about Black Panther's secret Wakanda drama. Do dusted Wakandans go to the Ancestral Plane? Could Killmonger return? And stick around for our later segment in which the hosts discuss which MCU film deserves the title of "most missable." Today the title of our message is "Show Him Who You Are." If you are a Marvel fan and have watched the Black Panther, then you know where this quote is from. It's what Queen Ramonda screams out to her son King T'Challa when he was losing his match for the title of Black Panter. You will have to watch the rest of the movie for the many messages the film represents. We also look at the lives of Susanne and John Wesley, Jesus and his mother Mary, Jesus and his Father, the Church as a whole, and then we segway to YOU the individual. We all were born with unique gifts that only we can develop and use for the kingdom of God. So our calling is to "Show Him Who You Are." Our main text today is Acts 27, and we read from the Message Bible.

Black artists are enjoying more mainstream success behind the camera as well as on the screen, in roles crafted to speak to the entirety of the black experience throughout the African Diaspora. Perhaps no film embodies that truth more so than Black Panther. The latest offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been smashing box office records around the world, and thus far, has grossed nearly $900 million world-wide.On today’s edition of Midday Culture Connections with Dr. Sheri Parks, we reflect on the history of race, representation and inclusivity in the world of comics, and how Black Panther has flipped the script on feminism in film. From problematic caricatures steeped in racist stereotypes for the consumption of white audiences, to King T’Challa, the billion dollar box office powerhouse; it appears we are seeing an important evolution of Black comic book characters. Sheri Parks is an Associate Professor in the Department of American Studies at the Univ of Maryland College Park. My Quest For Quotes - Weekly Motivational Quotes

This is episode number 34 of the My Quest For Quotes podcast. The title of this week’s episode is, Challenge Accepted   During Black History Month we are looking at quotes that are related to Black History, but I’m trying to NOT consider the customary names that come up each year in February.    We first looked at the artist who was ahead of his time, Otis Redding Jr. Then we looked at an example of, what I considered to be great parenting from my FaceBook friend Krischa Esquivel, author of “Losing Control, A Guide To Successful Non-Violent Parenting.   Last week I asked the question, Is Gregg Popovich Right? Gregg Popovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs declared that the U.S. is a racist country. Check out episode number 33 for more on that.    This week is the final episode for Black History Month. I simply had to take this week’s quote from the recently released Marvel Comics movie, “Black Panther.”   Black Panther is an absolutely great movie! Actually, using a quote from the movie is an excuse for me to talk about the movie especially seeing that it is Black History Month.    The quote comes from King T’Challa aka The Black Panther played by Chadwick Boseman. He makes the same quote in two separate scenes in the movie. The quote is, “I accept your challenge.”   Each time that he made this statement, the fate of the country that he loved, Wakanda, was at stake. And, each time his challenger, at least physically, was bigger and stronger than the king when stripped of his special powers. Yet, each time he accepted the challenge.    To me, this is a great metaphor for us when we have to face the challenges of everyday life. And make no mistake about it life is full of challenges. For us, just like for the mythical character king T’Challa, even if we accept the challenge there is no guarantee of success.   I hope that you would agree with me that the magic sauce is actually in the trying!   Ok, let’s talk about the movie! Don’t worry, if you’re one of the few people that haven’t seen the movie yet, I’m not going to spoil the movie for you at all!   First of all, I am not a Marvel Comic person at all. Second of all, I’m not really that much of a Marvel Comic movie person either. Until now, my favorite Marvel movie was The Avengers! Well, after the opening day of Black Panther, I have a new favorite Marvel movie!   I absolutely loved everything about Black Panther. The pageantry, the plot, the plot twists, the acting, the directing, the cinematography I loved it all.   To be honest I didn’t get caught up in any of the lead up to the movie, because again, I’m not much of a Marvel Movie person. If I’m remembering correctly, prior to Black Panther, I had never seen a Marvel movie at the theatre, ever.   So, a good friend of mine texted me sometime after 8pm on opening night saying he was thinking about seeing the movie around 9:30, I said let me know if you do and I’ll meet you there. I knew I wasn’t going to take my wife to see a Marvel movie, so I was like why not!   I didn’t know what to expect!   All of the main characters were played perfectly by the actors, every actor landed the right roll. My favorite main character actually had the fewest scenes of all the other main characters.    M’Baku, leader of the Jabari tribe, played by actor Winston Duke. Duke dominated every scene that he was in. You’ll be seeing more of him in the future. One of the things that hurts him in getting rolls is the fact that he is 6’5” tall.    The other character that jumped off the screen was Okoye, the General of the Wakandan army played by Danai Gurira. She was electric!   My immediate impression at the end of the movie, was that Black Panther wasn’t a great Marvel movie, it wasn’t a great Black movie, it was a great movie PERIOD!   It has everything!   Drama Intrigue Action  Betrayal Family Loyalty  Hope Honor Revenge Bravery   A great movie indeed!

The gang discusses why Black Panther is so important and exciting; how the film takes the MCU in exciting new directions, particularly with its nuanced villain; how rare and wonderful it is to see so many female characters with agency, skill, and personality; why Ludwig Goransson’s score (and Kendrick Lamar’s soundtrack, at least according to Arlo) is a true sonic statement; and how some of the fight sequences bring to mind Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Plus, Arlo’s obsessed with a bizarre lo-fi mobile game called InstLife; and Paul goes full steampunk ahead with Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. WORLD OF WAKANDA is an offshoot of Ta-nehisi Coates' main BLACK PANTHER run, and it provides a look into the heart of Wakanda, separate from what King T'Challa may experience. We see the training of the Dora Milaje, the history of Wakanda itself, but most of all, the evolution of Aneka and Ayo's love story. A story focused around a queer black romance, brought to us by the amazingly talented Roxane Gay, feels like a gift, and it was a joy to read. We can't wait to see more from WORLD OF WAKANDA!
