Send us a text message and tell us your thoughts. Our history of migration spans across the world. Join us as we journey with Alya Harding, a community organizer and PhD student, who shares her heartfelt exploration of Sierra Leonean Creole/Krio culture and her personal quest to uncover her Trinidadian roots. We examine the historical migrations that have woven a diverse Creole culture, bringing together Africans, African Americans, and Afro-Caribbean individuals in Sierra Leone. Alya's narrative of growing up in post-civil war Sierra Leone, paired with her newfound connections to her Caribbean heritage, paints a vivid picture of identity and belonging within the African diaspora. This episode offers a thoughtful reflection on the complex layers of Creole culture, as seen through the lens of "roots versus routes" by scholar Paul Gilroy. We discuss the spiritual connections that bind African and Caribbean people, bolstered by historical movements such as the Haitian Revolution. The conversation also critically examines the romanticized idea of "returning" to Africa. We challenge the commercialization and exclusivity of this concept, advocating for genuine engagement with local communities and learning from past social movements. Alya enriches the dialogue with her personal anecdotes, and together we explore the enduring quest for freedom within Black communities worldwide. Dive into these narratives and gain access to further resources on the Strictly Facts podcast website, as we continue to explore these essential themes in our ongoing series.Alya Harding, is a community organiser based in East London, concerned with issues of gender-based violence, migration, and agency. Alya's activism and academic pursuits are deeply influenced by her early childhood in post-civil war Sierra Leone, shaped by the resilience of her Krio heritage and the richness of creolised cultures. She is particularly drawn to storytelling as a means to explore the tensions between theory and practice, grounded in a feminist approach that reimagines identity and freedom at the intersections of race, gender, and empire. Alya's PhD research through an intergenerational discourse seeks to explore feminised migratory survival modes through the family pathology of African female headed households across Britain. In particular, examining how these practices affect their children, especially how they have shaped their daughters' views on identity, belonging and healing.Support the showConnect with Strictly Facts - Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | LinkedIn | YouTube | Website Looking to read more about the topics covered in this episode? We talk to ADAMA GAYE, former ECOWAS director of communications, and journalist and Chatham House consulting fellow, PAUL MELLY about the West African bloc's future as Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali form their own breakaway group. Adama tells us the 15 member ECOWAS is facing a ‘death threat' because of the loss of three of its founding countries. Senegal's new president BASSIROU DIOMAYE FAYE is given the job of trying to woo them back to the clan. Has he been given a fool's errand?Zimbabwe's best-known journalist and activist, HOPEWELL CHIN'ONO tells us about his campaign to get young people to register to vote. We ask him whether there's an appetite in Zim to follow the lead of Kenya's Gen Z after their protests succeeded in getting a much-hated bill withdrawn. Hopewell spells out the repressive conditions under which Zimbabwe's young people live. Daddy Hope himself has been jailed at least 3 times merely for doing his job and exposing corruption.Education minister, CONRAD SACKEY tells us about an app he's rolling out in Sierra Leone's schools to get accurate information about both students and teachers. He's found more than half the teachers on the government's payroll of participating schools were more absent than their pupils! The app is called Wi De Ya – We are Here in Krio. Hear me have a go at Wi De Ya.On day one KEIR STARMER dropped the controversial policy of sending those who'd entered the country unofficially to Rwanda.

Welcome to the Lecker Book Club. Every month I'll pick a newly released food related book and talk to the author about the process of writing it. I'll also be cooking from the book and writing about that on Substack and Patreon. Join me there as well! On the first edition of the Lecker Book Club: Maria Bradford's Sweet Salone. Maria grew up in Sierra Leone and moved to Kent, UK in her late teens. Sweet Salone is the first English-language book of Sierra Leonean recipes published internationally, and in it Maria wanted to share the unique nature of the food of her home country, but also celebrate the country's people, including her own family. But it wasn't necessarily a smooth process writing the book, as you'll hear her talk about. We spoke about the culture shock she experienced on arriving in the UK; what it was like encountering strawberries and apples for the first time. But it was Maria's deep-rooted curiosity about all kinds of food that eventually led her on a path to training at Leiths and setting up her fine-dining catering business, Shwen Shwen - a Krio phrase meaning ‘fancy'. It's this outlook and experience that closely informs the recipes in the book: from traditional dishes learned from her mother and grandmother, to her very own brand of Afrofusion. Sweet Salone is out now, published by Quadrille. Find all of the Lecker Book Club reads on my Bookshop.org list. Scientists from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) say they have found an invasive exotic freshwater snail which is not only decimating rice paddies, it's also putting people at risk of catching a strain of meningitis. The snail is believed to have arrived in the country in 2020 from South America Sierra-Leonean fashion designer Sheila Winston-Martin tells us about her beautiful garments made of traditional Krio fabrics from her native Sierra Leone.

April Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week, we're venturing west from Ghana along the coast to Sierra Leone by way of the US to settle here in Accra. My guest, Joannes “Joe” Hotagua is a Sierra Leonian-American, Strategic Advisor with 16 years of professional experience helping startups monetize their digital assets and Fortune 500 brands reach their target customers through digital media advertising. He's a modern-day iteration of the Ad Man. Early in his career, Joe was responsible for using email marketing and affiliate advertising to drive product purchases and lead generation for direct-to-consumer companies. In 2012, he began his investment career by personally investing in PeepsOut, a minority-run Livestream mobile app, allowing users to see the crowd size at bars and restaurants in real time. At its peak, there were 90 restaurants and bars (in two cities) on the service, and $350K was raised in funding. His current business, based in Freetown, focuses on improving the lives of underrepresented and underserved populations and operates in four sectors: African Startup Advisory, African Film Production, E-commerce, and Real Estate. Joe's e-commerce platform, Authentic African, is both an e-commerce store and social media broadcast. The e-commerce mission is to connect the diaspora with their African roots through African handmade products while helping local African entrepreneurs build their businesses internationally. The @Authentic_African social media broadcast delivers history, news, and culture to the African diaspora. This conversation was another great opportunity to reflect on the shared mission many of us African content creators have around manifesting a new Africa, a new world. Where to find Joannes? This is the audio from our recent YouTube livestream where we celebrated the impact of Chadwick Boseman. https://youtu.be/f0oPskY2t14 Chadwick Aaron Boseman was born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina, to Carolyn and Leroy Boseman, both African American. According to Boseman, DNA testing indicated that his ancestors were Krio people from Sierra Leone, Yoruba people from Nigeria and Limba people from Sierra Leone. His mother was a nurse and his father worked at a textile factory, managing an upholstery business as well. Boseman graduated from T. L. Hanna High School in 1995. In his junior year, he wrote his first play, Crossroads, and staged it at the school after a classmate was shot and killed. Boseman attended college at Howard University in Washington, D.C., graduating in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing. One of his teachers was Phylicia Rashad, who became a mentor. She helped raise funds, notably from her friend and prominent actor Denzel Washington so that Boseman and some classmates could attend the Oxford Mid-Summer Program of the British American Drama Academy in London, to which they had been accepted. Boseman wanted to write and direct, and initially began studying acting to learn how to relate to actors. After he returned to the U.S., he graduated from New York City's Digital Film Academy. He lived in Brooklyn at the start of his career. Boseman worked as the drama instructor in the Schomburg Junior Scholars Program, housed at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, New York. In 2008, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

한국말 있는 어란이 영어 책) The Fabulous Lost and Found by Mark Pallis.⁣⁣This was a great little read, and being able to read and speak Korean it was a real pleasure to put on the podcast. Mark has a great idea with the way he is creating these English children's books incorporating other languages in a very engaging way! ⁣⁣.About the Author and Illustrator:⁣⁣Mark Pallis is a lifelong lover of language. He was originally a lawyer but switched to the creative sector and devised the award-winning BBC TV drama Garrow's Law and served as Story Editor over its three series. Since then, Mark built up 15 years' experience in communication, branding, and storytelling, including as Creative ⁣Director of a busy London ad agency, writing episodes for the Daytime Emmy winning Tales of Peter Rabbit and sitting on the Executive Committee of the Children's Media Foundation. He is represented by the BKS Agency and his first children’s book ‘Crab and Whale’ has been translated into five languages. He lives with his wife and two young children.-⁣⁣Peter Baynton is an animator, director, and illustrator based in London. He is the Animation Director of the UK’s Channel 4's new 2019 Christmas film, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, adapted from Judith Kerr's classic book. He has been directing short films, music videos, and commercials for twelve years, picking up over 25 awards at film festivals around the world along the way. He has also worked as a storyboard artist on the BAFTA-winning CBeebies show Sarah & Duck, and in 2017 was the 2D Animation Director for Paddington 2. This year he decided to pursue a long-held desire to illustrate a children's book and was enchanted by Mark’s manuscript for The Fabulous Lost and Found.⁣⁣From the Author Mark:-What's the story behind the book? When I was 21, I set up a legal aid clinic for refugees. Sitting in my office in Cairo, I’d meet people from Sierra Leone, Congo, Iraq, and Sudan. They’d tell me why they’d fled and I would prepare their cases. But to get to a point where they were willing to share those painful stories, we had to build a relationship of trust. I asked myself, How do I do that: form a bond, show respect, and yet break the ice with a stranger? For me, it was to talk to them in their own language. ‘Aw Di bodi? I would ask clients from Sierra Leone. They’d smile, taken aback, and reply in Krio, ‘Di Bodi fayn.’ Then I’d apologise for my language skills ‘Ah no sabi tok Krio fayn fayn.’ And we’d share a chuckle. Somehow just that simple gesture of wanting to engage, of being seen to be making an effort to make them feel at home was enough to set us off. I’ve been like that my whole life. I now speak Italian, French and German and can tell jokes or sing a little song in Tagalog, Greek, Dutch, Danish, Spanish, Krio and Kupsabiny (a Ugandan language). I can’t imagine my life without it.⁣⁣Today, like never before, I feel we need more of that empathy between people from different countries. This book is an engaging story that I hope kids will love in its own right. But it’s also my way of helping the youngest children, my own included, engage with a foreign language, learn to empathise with strangers, and ultimately build a love of languages. The possibility that after a few reads, kids will be able to go up to a native speaker and tell them in their own language: ‘I’ve lost my hat,’ fills me with joy. Imagine the reaction! Think of how proud the child will feel. So whether you come to the book because your family has a deliciously mixed international heritage, like mine, or simply for the fun of it, the simple fact of engaging with another language is going to an enriching experience for everyone. The book has several versions incorporating different languages and can be found here⁣ ⁣https://www.neuwestendpress.com/
