In the summer of 2021, SPC Christian Sutton reluctantly attended a punk rock concert and was intrigued by a bone marrow registration table there. Inspired, he created Operation Ring the Bell, a series of donor drive events that has taken place at multiple Army bases and led to thousands of new possible bone marrow donors—and saved lives. Hosts LTC (Ret.) Les Smith and LaSherryn Duncan sit down with SPC Sutton to discuss how his life has been driven by volunteering, how a few Afghan refugees have inspired him, and how his vision turned the Army into a worldwide leader in bone marrow donations. EDINBURG, Texas - Thomas Ray Garcia, lead coordinator for the Hidalgo County Prosperity Task Force, has provided more information on the RGV Recompete Coalition. The Coalition, consisting of the four counties of the RGV, along with various higher education institutions, has made an application to the US Department of Commerce to secure an $85 million grant under the Recompete Pilot Project. According to the Department of Commerce, the Recompete Pilot Program will invest $200 million toward projects that spur economic activity in geographically diverse and persistently distressed communities across the country. Specifically, the program targets areas where prime-age (25-54 years) employment significantly trails the national average. The program aims to close this gap through by utilizing EDA's place-based approach and delivering large, highly flexible grants based on community-driven strategies to address unique workforce and economic development needs of individual communities or regions.”“The idea is to get residents out of poverty through a systemic process of getting them educated, getting them trained, getting them counseled and mentored, and then getting them gainful employment,” Garcia said. “That also means working at the back end and trying to systemically ensure that the jobs are there. So what we've tried to do at the Prosperity Task Force is both match job seekers to jobs, plus get new jobs here in Hidalgo County.”Garcia added: “That's a big part of what this Recompete grant would help us do. We are still in the process of putting together the framework of doing the things that we set out to do in the Recompete grant, even in the case we don't get it. But, the Recompete grant would make reality a lot of what we're aiming to do by eradicating poverty in Hidalgo County, and by working collaboratively across all of our different sectors, and in this case, a regional effort. What helps Hidalgo County we hope will also help Starr County, Cameron County, Willacy County to make sure we're not competing, but we are indeed one region, one voice.”To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

An Anarchy Worth Having | Non Serviam Podcast #31 with William Gillis

Non Serviam Media

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 3, 2021 82:50

For the 31st episode of the Non Serviam Podcast, we spoke with William Gillis about an anarchy worth having. It's hardly controversial to point out that some proposals made by anarchists for post-state coordination suffer from similar issues proposed by non-anarchist opponents of the status quo. In this episode, we explore how said schemes tend to cause unfreedom through the suppression of complexity, or through the total bureaucratization of human life. As a solution, Will promotes distributed, fluid networks of trade in a world beyond the trappings of patchwork or endless meetings. What's a meaningful way to distinguish between centralization and decentralization? What are some examples of distributed efforts expanding freedom? To what extent would New Municipalist or Ostromite common resource management strategies be utilized within anarchy? We explore all these questions and more with piercing critiques, in this exciting conversation with William Gillis. William Gillis is a second generation anarchist, lapsed physicist, and transhumanist, who is interested in exploring the roots of things and expanding degrees of freedom. Introduced to the ideas of anarchy at age five and organizing by age thirteen, Will has gone on to become a prolific writer and political theorist who has undoubtedly made a mark in anarchist history. William is the former Lead Coordinator at C4SS who identifies most with Voltairine de Cleyre's "steal bread for the hungry'' style of market anarchism. Will's writings can be found at C4SS Dot Org and Human Iterations Dot Net. Will participated in a video interview with Non Serviam back in 2016 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leW18Q8SnMk) and has appeared as a headlining speaker at one of our in-person events in 2018 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbDtjv_S55w). ----- Will suggested listeners donate to the project's linked below (instead on Will's Patreon): https://bangladeshasf.com/ https://onsiteinfoshopphilippines.wordpress.com/ https://www.patreon.com/etnikobandidoinfoshop/posts https://twitter.com/rechelon/status/1393046705688436736?s=21 ----- Will's Website: http://humaniterations.net/ Will's Twitter: https://twitter.com/rechelon Relevant Articles & Links: http://humaniterations.net/2015/04/17/anarchy-is-a-scale-independent-proposition/ https://c4ss.org/content/52295 https://c4ss.org/content/53476 https://c4ss.org/content/51379 ----- Non Serviam Media Twitter: https://twitter.com/nonserviammedia Support Non Serviam Media: https://www.patreon.com/nonserviammedia View Non Serviam's Full Catalogue: https://www.nonserviammedia.com/ --- Listen to the Non Serviam Podcast on your favorite podcast platform! iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, Soundcloud, and more. Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you my friend Taylor Joseph. We met while he was living in Central Texas last summer. He's since moved back to his home state of California, but he came to visit Amanda and I for a few days prior to Hear the Watchmen 2018, where he functioned as Lead Coordinator for Mike and Jeannie. In this special hour-and-a-half episode, we have a "coffee shop" chat about humility, dealing with discord in the ekklesia, the pitfalls of social media outreach, and Taylor's experiences as a Lyft driver. There's a lot of laughter and only a smidgen of irreverence. I think you'll enjoy the informal discussion.

Among other things, she's been involved in "Million March Against Child Abuse," a Nationwide effort to bring voices together in making an impact, being a voice for our children. Penny explains, "My memories go back as far as probably before I was 2, being picked up and thrown into canning jars. I have enough scars on my head and you could draw a road map across country on my scalp." She goes on, "My mother was the abuser. Everyone knew, but no one stood up. Years of her abuse had taken a toll on not only my body but my mind." For a number of years, Penny had been what she calls "a keyboard advocate" sharing very little of herself and hiding behind a computer screen. Recovering from a stroke and news of a brain tumor got her into action. "I knew I had to do something, and determined I was going to become an advocate that was no longer going to hide behind my screen. In September of 2013, I contacted "Million March Against Child Abuse" and became a Lead Coordinator for St. Croix Falls WI, and held my first Walk against Child Abuse April 5th 2014." She concludes, "I'm ready to tell my story. Yesterday I lived in shame of my scars. Today I soar past them to tell other peoples stories, to be a voice. I thank you for this opportunity, and I only pray that when I have the opportunity to tell MY story it will help others come forwards and erase the stigma of shame and we can continue to grow for our future generation."
