As cities try to reduce emissions, getting more people to adopt solar energy is key. Community-owned solar projects could be a solution. Some operators want to extend the lives of coal plants because of increased energy demand. President-elect Trump has endorsed relaxing regulations that could help do this. Farmers are doing everything they can to prevent a bird flu outbreak in Pennsylvania. Plus, could climate polluters face criminal charges in Pennsylvania for causing or risking a catastrophe?   The 2024 Pennsylvania Farm Show is in full swing this week. The Farm Show is the world's largest indoor agricultural exhibition. It showcases the people, products, animals and crops that go into the state's largest industry. Today's agriculture is much different than in the past. Even the family farm uses technology and science. What hasn't changed is farmers face many challenges from weather and climate change to waiting on the federal government to enact a farm bill. Pennsylvania's Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding spoke to The Spark's Scott LaMar at the Farm Show to discuss the state of agriculture in Pennsylvania, starting with the good news in agriculture,"We're only state in the nation with a its own state level farm bill. I think it puts us in a really important space, too. We have 44 inches of natural rain, right? Put that on the asset list. I think we've got the ports that are now open to Pennsylvania. Only state with three ports Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Erie links us to the 95% of the available stomachs that are in the United States of America. Uh, and we have more young farmers under the age of 35 than any other state nation." What's the bad news or challenges farmers are facing? "We've just experienced avian influenza. That's a threat that remains a threat. Everybody's complaining about it was a warm December. Well, the birds are just as confused as we are, right? They're not migrating. They're slower about it. That's how we got the last infection here right before Christmas. Uh, that's a challenge for us. It's still as strong as it was a year and a half ago. So that's a problem. We've got a $7 billion poultry industry in the state. So that's a concern. I think the climate to me is a threat in that we are conditioned to grow certain crops certain way, certain times, certain seasons, all of that. And then all of a sudden you find yourself with these climate extremes that make it really difficult for our producers. It's both a threat and an opportunity, because I often believe that the only way you're going to solve the climate issue is to do the good things and the good practices you've been doing." Secretary Redding also mentioned that Pennsylvania farmers need Congress to pass a long-term Farm Bill so they can have more certainty. The Farm Bill was scheduled to be renewed last year but Congress passed only a one-year bill. On the federal level, Redding said farmers that count on immigrants on a seasonal basis want immigration reform.    Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of the January 6th insurrection. While a lot of words were said, it remains to be seen whether the political will exists to defend democracy. Will we keep anti-majoritarian rules like the filibuster in place? Will we continue to support a Senate that grants disproportionate power to white, rural states and districts? What will this year's elections bring?  COVID rages and it appears our institutions are pretty much throwing in the towel.  In a what-the-what news…lightning increased dramatically around the North Pole. According to CNN, “Vaisala, an environmental monitoring company that tracks lightning around the world, reported 7,278 lightning strokes occurred last year north of 80 degrees latitude, nearly twice as many as the previous nine years combined.” The Pennsylvania Farm Show is this weekend!  Don't want covid?  Do go.  It's that simple because masks and vaccination cards won't be required as Omicron is ripping the lands.  Doug Mastriano is launching his campaign for Governor tomorrow.  Get ready everybody. The Pennridge School District makes more moves to discriminate and whitewash history now that the extremists have full control of the board. The board ordered the removal of the book, Heather Has Two Mommies, due to its radical message that “it doesn't matter how many mommies or how many daddies your family has … the most important thing about a family is that all the people in it love each other.” Check out Cyril's interview with the book's author, Lesléa Newman, in his latest column. And then there's moves to prevent critical discussion on the one-year anniversary of the January 6th insurrection. Teachers were sent a note instructing them to “not wade into” discussion of January 6. Instead, they should stick to “business as usual.” We should recall that Bucks County had more people attend the insurrection than any other county - and the Pennridge School Board president, Joan Cullen, was one of them.  Looks like the Executive Director of Upper Bucks County Technical School. Jeffrey Sweda, is being given the boot after the board overseeing the school's Joint Operating Committee charges him with “persistent negligence in the performance of his duties, willful neglect of duties, and/or willful failure to comply with school laws and directives.” The charges include buying a $999 log splitter for his personal use, stealing pavers from the school, cutting security cameras to the loading dock, abusing co-workers, and more. Next, food science expert Harold McGee chats about different types of butter and how you can make your own at home. Finally, Diane St Clair gives listeners some great details on her butter making and dairy farming. This program was sponsored by Cain Vineyard & Winery. “There’s sweet cream butter and cultured butter. They require different types of handling. All the cream no matter what needs to come from really good milk.” “Usually when people make butter in the kitchen, it’s by accident. They’re usually trying to whip cream.” “Sadly the best indicator of quality in butter is probably price.” –Harold McGee on Cutting the Curd
