In the face of climate change, “now's the time to come together” - the words of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as she heralded January 2024 as the launch of the strategic dialogue between all actors in the food chain – an initiative she first announced in September. This video message was broadcast at the opening of the Agri-Food Days, which took place from 5-8 December in Brussels. On stage and in the hall, the event brought together all the stakeholders of the sector, including farmers, processors, distributors, consumers, environmental and animal protection NGOs, scientists and political decision-makers. It was an opportunity to exchange and imagine together a sustainable future for our agricultural and food systems. For this final episode of 2023, Food for Europe takes you behind the scenes of the event to confront the challenges facing the agricultural and rural world, as well as the solutions available. Peter Meedendorf, arable crop producer and president of the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA), shares his concerns about generational renewal in agriculture. Isabel Buscke, Head of the Liaison Office of the Federation of German Consumer Organisations, talks about the role of consumers, but also of retailers, in the transition to sustainable models. Gianluca Feligini, Head of Precision Technologies for Europe, Middle East and Africa at agricultural supplier CNH, discusses the technological advances that can support this transition. Finally, Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle, Director of Strategy and Policy Analysis at DG AGRI, gives her assessment of the Agri-Food Days.

Government officials and political heavyweights strongly condemned a United States report and so-called "hearing" that smeared Hong Kong's judicial system and threatened to sanction Hong Kong judges. They stressed that Hong Kong's judicial independence brooks no interference, and the malicious and despicable trick could not change the Chinese people's resolve to safeguard national security and ensure the sustained success of the "one country, two systems" principle. The US Congressional-Executive Commission on China released a report on Thursday and also held a "hearing", during which it criticized 29 Hong Kong judges and judicial officers who have handled national security-related cases, including the city's Chief Justice Andrew Cheung Kui-nung. The commission also demanded that the US government consider imposing sanctions on the judges. The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council dismissed on Sunday the US report's smearing of Hong Kong's judicial system, saying the central government firmly supports the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's judiciary in performing its duty in an independent and impartial manner, and never allows US politicians to interfere in the SAR's judicial independence. The office's spokesperson said the National Security Law for Hong Kong has helped the city restore social stability, uphold its rule of law and protect the rights and interests enjoyed by Hong Kong people and overseas investors. However, the spokesperson said, some US politicians have tried every means to interfere with Hong Kong's law enforcement and judicial works, in order to help those who endanger national security and the stability of Hong Kong escape responsibility for their crimes and to try to contain the development of the city and the nation. The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR said the report is another rude interference in the internal affairs of China and the Hong Kong SAR.The US politicians' attempts to obstruct the implementation of the National Security Law for Hong Kong, disrupt the judicial order in Hong Kong and interfere with the city's independent adjudication of judges is a blatant blasphemy against the spirit of the rule of law, the liaison office said.A spokesperson for the Commissioner's Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR said no sanctions or pressure could change the firm determination of the Chinese side to safeguard the prosperity and stability of the Hong Kong SAR and ensure the sustained success of "one country, two systems".Foreign intimidation will only make the Chinese people even more united, and all foreign interference will only fall flat, the office said. The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, the city's largest political group, said it firmly supports Hong Kong judges in continuing to perform their duties. The group also urged the Hong Kong government to take necessary measures to protect judges from external interference and safeguard the city's judicial system.Lawmaker Stanley Ng Chau-pei, who also chairs the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, the SAR's largest labor union, said the attempt by US politicians to interfere in Hong Kong's national security trials with threats will not affect Hong Kong people's resolve to safeguard national security, safeguard Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, and uphold the Constitution, the Basic Law and the National Security Law for Hong Kong.Judicial英/dʒuːˈdɪʃəl/ 美/dʒuːˈdɪʃəl/adj.法庭的,司法的Security 英/sɪˈkjʊərəti/ 美/sɪˈkjʊrəti/n.安全

POLICY SEMINAR Making agrifood systems more resilient to shocks and stresses Co-Organized by IFPRI and FAO in North America JAN 19, 2022 - 9:30 TO 11:00AM EST The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerability of agrifood systems to shocks and stresses, as it increased global food insecurity and malnutrition. Action is needed to make agrifood systems more resilient, efficient, sustainable, and inclusive. The FAO's The State of Food and Agriculture 2021 presents country-level indicators of the resilience of agrifood systems — these measure the robustness of primary production and food availability, as well as physical and economic access to food, and can thus help assess the capacity of national agrifood systems to absorb shocks and stresses. The report analyzes the vulnerabilities of food supply chains and how rural households cope with risks and shocks. It offers guidance for minimizing trade-offs as we develop policies to enhance food supply chain resilience, support livelihoods in the agrifood system and, in the face of disruption, ensure sustainable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food for all. The seminar participants will discuss these policy conclusions and how to act on them. Introduction and Context Setting Johan Swinnen, Director General, IFPRI and Global Director of Systems Transformation of CGIAR Presentation of The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2021: Making agrifood systems more resilient to shocks and stresses Máximo Torero, Chief Economist, Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Panel Discussion Alexious Butler, Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Resilience and Food Security, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Julian Lampietti, Manager, Global Agriculture Practice, World Bank Thomas Reardon, University Distinguished Professor, Michigan State University (MSU) Danielle Resnick, Senior Fellow at Brookings Institute and Non-Resident Fellow, IFPRI Closing Remarks Jocelyn Brown Hall, Director, Liaison Office, Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) (invited) Moderator Rob Vos, Director of Markets, Trade and Institutions Division, IFPRI LINKS FAO North America: https://www.fao.org/connect-private-sector/regions/north-america/en/ The State Of Food And Agriculture (SOFA) 2021: https://www.fao.org/publications/sofa/sofa-2021/en/ More on the seminar: https://www.ifpri.org/event/making-agrifood-systems-more-resilient-shocks-and-stresses Subscribe to IFPRI Insights newsletter and event announcements at www.ifpri.org/content/newsletter-subscription

POLICY SEMINAR Global Report on Food Crises 2021: Building resilience to prevent food crises and conflict Co-Organized by IFPRI, FSIN, FAO North America, World Food Program USA and the Food Security Portal JUN 17, 2021 - 09:30 AM TO 11:00 AM EDT Acute food insecurity continued to rise in 2020, driven by the pandemic shock, ongoing conflicts, and extreme weather. The number of people needing urgent food and livelihood assistance hit a five-year high. The 2021 Global Report on Food Crises https://docs.wfp.org/api/documents/WFP-0000127343/download/?_ga=2.7473648.338134682.1622747437-165400289.1620067163 (published by the Food Security Information Network for the Global Network Against Food Crises) finds that at least 155 million people experienced acute food insecurity at crisis level or worse — up about 20 million from 2019. Africa is disproportionally affected, with close to 98 million people facing acute food insecurity last year. Other parts of the world are suffering too, with Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, and Haiti experiencing major conflict-related food crises. Most food crises are protracted, severely eroding the resilience of agrifood systems and further fueling conflict and civil strife. Reversing the current alarming trends will require much greater effort to build resilient agrifood systems that are socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable. This policy seminar focuses on experiences and strategies that can both build food system resilience and help prevent conflict. Introductory Remarks Johan Swinnen, Director General, IFPRI Overview of 2021 Global Report on Food Crises Lavinia Antonaci, Technical Coordinator, Technical Support Unit of the Global Network Against Food Crises Domenica Sabella, Food Security Information Network Communications Officer, World Food Programme Keynote Addresses Jim Barnhart, Assistant to the Administrator, Bureau of Resilience and Food Security, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Giampiero Muci, Senior Policy Officer, Sustainable Agri-food Systems and Fisheries, Directorate-General for International Partnerships, European Commission Panel Discussion David Alpher, Conflict and Violence Prevention Integrator, Bureau for Conflict Prevention, USAID Tanya Boudreau, Deputy Chief Of Party, Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWSNET) Clemens Breisinger, Senior Research Fellow and Middle East and North Africa team leader, IFPRI Dominique Burgeon, Director, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Geneva Arif Husain, Chief Economist, World Food Programme Martien van Nieuwkoop, Global Director, Agriculture and Food Global Practice, The World Bank Closing Remarks Jocelyn Brown Hall, Director, FAO 's Liaison Office for North America Moderator Rob Vos, Director of Markets, Trade and Institutions Division, IFPRI LINKS UN World Food Programme Global Report On Food Crises: https://www.wfp.org/publications/global-report-food-crises-2021 Food Security Information Network: https://www.fsinplatform.org/ Food And Agriculture Organization Of The United Nations: http://www.fao.org/north-america/en/ World Food Program USA: https://www.wfpusa.org/ Food Security Portal: https://www.foodsecurityportal.org/ More on the seminar: https://www.ifpri.org/event/global-report-food-crises-2021-building-resilience-prevent-food-crises-and-conflict Subscribe IFPRI Insights newsletter and event annoucements at www.ifpri.org/content/newsletter-subscription

North Korea blew up an inter-Korean liaison office building just inside its borders, after Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, warned that Seoul would witness “a tragic scene of the useless North-South liaison office being completely collapsed.” South Korea is warning the North it will "strongly respond" if the situation escalates. The destruction of the office may be a show of force by Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, and brings into further question how much power she now has over the communist regime. And in China, Beijing is becoming the epicenter of a new outbreak of the new coronavirus. Beijing is now under partial lockdown, and restrictions on work and travel are now being rolled out. In 12 short months, the initial UNAIDS Fast Track milestones toward gaining control of the HIV pandemic come due. As we start HIV’s pivotal 2020 year, there is cause for both optimism that progress is being made in important areas and concern that critical obstacles remain. The world is not on track to reach the 2020 Fast Track milestones by the end of the year. The time is now to take stock of the state of the epidemic, understand how different countries and cities are making progress, and correct policy and program implementation issues hindering the HIV response. On Monday, February 3, 10:30am-12:15pm, the CSIS Global Health Policy Center will host a public event to explore the state of the HIV epidemic: where we are now, what we know works, and what can be accomplished in 2020. The event will include a panel discussion featuring Regan Hofmann, Director, a.i., U.S. Liaison Office, UNAIDS; Jennifer Kates, Senior Vice President and Director of Global Health & HIV Policy, Kaiser Family Foundation; and Greg Millett, Vice President and Director of Public Policy, amfAR. Sara M. Allinder, Executive Director and Senior Fellow of the CSIS Global Health Policy Center, will moderate. Following the panel, we will screen a sneak peak of the CSIS Global Health Policy Center's upcoming documentary, The Pandemic Paradox: HIV on the Edge, which explores the long arc of the HIV pandemic against the backdrop of continued high levels of new infections and annual deaths.   The discussion will serve as a scene setter for CSIS’s planned April 2020 conference on what needs to be part of a plan to get back on the path toward ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030, which will include the official launch of The Pandemic Paradox: HIV on the Edge.   Panel Discussion Regan Hofmann Director, a.i., U.S. Liaison Office UNAIDS  Jennifer Kates Senior Vice President and Director of Global Health & HIV Policy Kaiser Family Foundation  Greg Millett Vice President and Director of Public Policy amfAR  Moderated by Sara M. An overnight attack by white-clad assailants apparently targeting pro-democracy protesters raised tensions to new levels in Hong Kong on Monday as China harshly criticized the weekend demonstration, saying "central authority cannot be challenged."The Chinese rebuke came after its Hong Kong office was targeted Sunday night by protesters who pelted it with eggs and spray-painted its walls. It made no mention of the violent attack hours later at a subway station by men wielding iron pipes and wooden poles as they beat up people clad in the pro-democracy movement's black shirts. Dozens were injured. The attack on China's Liaison Office was an escalation of the weekslong protests, during which demonstrators besieged Hong Kong's legislature and police headquarters but did not direct their ire at China itself. It came after more than 100,000 people marched through the city to demand democracy and an investigation into the use of force by police to disperse crowds at protests. As demonstrators made their way home, a gang of men descended on a group of them at a subway station. Video of the attack in Hong Kong's Yuen Long neighborhood showed the protesters being beaten by the assailants as they retreated into the trains, intimidated by the gangs of men waiting for them outside the turnstiles. The attackers then entered the trains and beat the people inside as they tried to defend themselves with umbrellas. At least 45 people were injured, and 15 remained hospitalized Monday afternoon, including one man in critical condition, the Hospital Authority said.Subway passengers filmed by Stand News and iCABLE angrily accused police officers of not intervening to protect the demonstrators, who have been critical of the police use of force.Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said Monday that allegations that police had colluded with the assailants were "unfounded."The Sunday night assault on Beijing's Hong Kong Liaison Office touched a raw nerve in China. China's national emblem, which hangs on the front of the building, was splattered with black ink. It was replaced by a new one within hours. The official People's Daily newspaper, in a front-page commentary on Monday headlined "Central Authority Cannot Be Challenged," called the protesters' actions "intolerable.""These acts openly challenged the authority of the central government and touched the bottom line of the 'one country, two systems' principle," the government's Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office said in a statement Sunday.Lam repeated the same statement to reporters Monday, adding that the vandalism "hurt the nation's feelings."The "one country, two systems" framework, under which the former British colony was returned to China in 1997, allows Hong Kong to maintain a fair degree of autonomy in local affairs. Demonstrators fear the pro-Beijing government in Hong Kong is chipping away at their rights and freedoms, and the weekslong tumult has fueled fears of a more aggressive Chinese response. In Washington, President Donald Trump said he believes Chinese leader Xi Jinping has acted "very responsibly" in allowing the extended protests to play out in Hong Kong. Asked about China's handling of the protests, he said that "China could stop them if they wanted." "I hope that President Xi will do the right thing. But it has been going on a long time," Trump added, without elaborating.  Meanwhile, a group of pro-China lawmakers held a news conference appealing for a halt to the violence, saying it was a blow to Hong Kong's reputation and was scaring away tourists and investors. They also urged police to tighten enforcement against the protesters, whom Regina Ip, a former security secretary, called "rebels.""The violent attack on the Liaison Office ... is a direct affront to the sovereignty of our country," Ip said.Asked why it took at least a half-hour for police to arrive at the suburban train station where protesters were attacked, she said the police were "overstretched.""The pol...

China's Foreign Ministry says the behavior of "some radical demonstrators" in Hong Kong "touched the bottom line of the 'one country, two systems' principle and must not be tolerated." More than 100,000 people marched in Hong Kong on Sunday to call for democratic reforms and a probe into alleged police brutality. A group of demonstrators later threw eggs and black ink at the Liaison Office building, which bears the Chinese national emblem. A major wildfire's being fought in Portugal, about 125 miles northeast of Lisbon. A local Civil Protection Agency commander says about 90% of the fire area was brought under control overnight...but heat and winds are expected to increase again. Equifax will pay up to $700 million to settle with U.S. states and the federal government over a 2017 data breach. The breach exposed the Social Security numbers and other private information of nearly 150 million people.

Welcome Remarks: Vimlendra Sharan, Director of FAO’s Liaison Office for North America FAO’s 2019 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report highlights that global food insecurity and malnutrition, including obesity, persist and remain stubbornly high with approximately 820 million people continuing to suffer from hunger and nearly 2 billion people experiencing some form of malnutrition. According to the report, which offers a significant update on the shifting global milieu that is affecting people's food security and nutrition, economic slowdowns and downturns are among the key drivers of this worsening trend. The uneven pace of economic recovery and continuing poor economic performance in many countries after the 2008–2009 global economic downturn, are also undermining efforts to end hunger and malnutrition. Please join us for a presentation of the report, keynote address and panel discussion on the key findings of the 2019 SOFI report.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat all rely on biodiversity – but the demands of a growing population and the practices of unsustainable agriculture are compromising access to humanity’s most basic needs. This was the message from two recent reports launched by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' (FAO) publications: Biodiversity for Sustainable Agriculture and The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture.   The reports detailed the impact of environmental degradation and the impact diminishing biodiversity has on vulnerable ecosystems and food systems, including agriculture and health. Once biodiversity is lost, we cannot recover it. What is driving these changes in nature and how will it impact daily life? What policies and practices need to be put in place to save our planet and our food security?   Join us to hear from experts on the linkages between biodiversity loss and its impact on the global food system. The distinguished panel will reflect on the importance of safeguarding biodiversity for food and agriculture. Sustainable agriculture is key to reversing trends that lead to biodiversity loss, damaged ecosystems, deforestation, and the overall deterioration of our natural resources. The event will include an in-depth, multidisciplinary discussion as well as a nuanced conversation on the two reports.  This dialogue is part of the joint CSIS Global Food Security Project and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Liaison Office for North America speaker series on agricultural development.

Current social movements have focused an overdue spotlight on the disadvantages faced by women and girls around the world. Join us for a discussion of both the challenges of persistent gender inequality and the inspiring strength and resilience of women and girls, especially vis-à-vis their contributions to food and nutrition security in unstable environments. Natural and manmade disasters often reinforce and even augment gender disparities, undermining women’s prospects for recovery. The long-term and intergenerational consequences of malnutrition are also disproportionately borne by women. In light of compelling evidence that gender-sensitive investments yield impressive returns in agricultural and nutrition programming, are development stakeholders sufficiently focused on women’s empowerment? How can we better harness and leverage the strength of women as change agents in both the humanitarian and development context? This dialogue is part of the joint CSIS Global Food Security Project and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Liaison Office for North America speaker series on agricultural development.
