Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

In a world constantly demanding our attention and energy, have you ever felt trapped between the crucial need to care for yourself and the undeniable urge to care for those around you?  Well, for this conversation, Debbie gets into that very dilemma with Dr. Jordan Quaglia, as he challenges us to move beyond the 'either/or' of self-care and explore his revolutionary 'We Care' approach.  Jordan, who is the author of Self-Care to We Care: The New Science of Mindful Boundaries and Caring From an Undivided Heart, gives his take on the research on balancing self-care with caring for others and emphasizes the importance of holding both self-care and compassion for others simultaneously and offers practical strategies for setting healthy boundaries and integrating self-care into daily life. Come join Debbie and Jordan to redefine what it means to care! Listen and Learn:  Why balancing care for others and self-care isn't an either-or and the hidden choices in between When self-care crosses into avoidance or indulgence, it may signal disconnection rather than renewal Finding balance when caring for others overrides your own needs In moments of tragedy, do you become the superhero or collapse from the hurt? The We Care framework to transform self-care and caring for others into one balanced practice in everyday life Transform overwhelming empathy into sustainable compassion that fuels your action and protects your well-being How care-based boundaries protect your energy while deepening connection, not guilt Balancing self-care and caring for the world work together to fuel your resilience and action Resources:  From Self-Care to We-Care: The New Science of Mindful Boundaries and Caring from an Undivided Heart: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9781645473473 Jordan's website: https://www.jordanquaglia.com/ Connect with Jordan on LinkedIn and Instagram:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanquaglia  https://www.instagram.com/mindfulboundaries/?hl=en About Jordan Quaglia Jordan Quaglia, PhD, has spent over a decade researching and teaching on topics such as mindfulness, compassion, and boundaries. This Day in Legal History: United Nations Charter Comes into ForceOn October 24, 1945, United Nations Day marked the formal establishment of the United Nations (UN) as the UN Charter officially came into force. The Charter had been signed a few months earlier on June 26, 1945, in San Francisco by 50 countries, laying the foundation for an international organization dedicated to peace, security, and cooperation among nations. The creation of the UN was a direct response to the devastation of World War II, with the goal of preventing future conflicts and fostering global collaboration. The UN Charter outlines the organization's purposes, principles, and structure. Its preamble emphasizes the need to save succeeding generations from war, reaffirm fundamental human rights, and promote social progress and better standards of life. The Charter established six principal organs, including the General Assembly, Security Council, International Court of Justice, and Secretariat, each with specific roles in maintaining international peace and security. Chapter VII of the Charter granted the Security Council significant powers to address threats to peace, including authorizing the use of force.United Nations Day has since been celebrated annually to honor the organization's ongoing work in diplomacy, humanitarian efforts, and human rights advocacy. The day also highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges, from conflict resolution to climate change.A lawsuit filed in Wisconsin two weeks before the 2024 presidential election highlights cybersecurity issues with the state's MyVote portal, which allows users to register and request absentee ballots online. The suit argues that the website lacks adequate security, leaving it vulnerable to unauthorized access and data breaches. The plaintiffs want the site taken down until it undergoes a redesign and testing. They cited a 2022 case where someone fraudulently requested absentee ballots using minimal personal information. Experts, however, find the timing problematic, as implementing a comprehensive security audit and fixes could take months, making it impossible to resolve before Election Day. Despite these concerns, some believe the state's current systems are sufficient to catch and prevent fraudulent votes. The suit underscores broader identification and authentication challenges across industries, which are struggling with securing user identities. The case raises critical questions about how to balance election security with practical constraints.Wisconsin MyVote Website Suit Puts Focus on Authentication WoesSeveral trade associations have challenged the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) final "click-to-cancel" rule, which aims to make it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions. The rule requires businesses to provide a simple and straightforward way to withdraw from subscription services and to disclose the terms of signing up clearly. The Electronic Security Association, Interactive Advertising Bureau, NCTA, and others filed petitions in the Fifth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals, seeking to vacate the rule. They argue that the rule imposes excessive regulatory burdens across industries, potentially affecting over a billion paid subscriptions in the U.S.The "click-to-cancel" rule was introduced in response to consumer complaints about difficult-to-cancel recurring subscriptions. In 2024, the FTC averaged 70 consumer complaints per day regarding such practices. The rule, which the FTC finalized after receiving over 16,000 public comments, is intended to protect consumers from deceptive subscription practices by making the cancellation process as easy as signing up.Trade groups challenging the rule claim it is arbitrary and that it will create costly regulatory obligations for businesses. They argue the rule overreaches by attempting to regulate all consumer contracts involving subscriptions, regardless of the businesses' existing disclosure practices. The "click-to-cancel" initiative hopes to curb "subscription traps," where businesses make it difficult for consumers to end services, thus preventing recurring charges without their consent. By simplifying the process, the FTC aims to foster transparency and fairness in subscription services across industries.Trade Associations Challenge FTC's Final Click-to-Cancel RuleFlorida has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), claiming the federal government is unlawfully obstructing its investigation into an assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody's lawsuit seeks to stop the DOJ from blocking the state's probe into the incident, which occurred at Trump's Florida golf course. The DOJ argues that federal law (18 U.S.C. § 351(f)) gives it sole jurisdiction over assassination attempts against presidential candidates, which led the FBI to instruct Florida law enforcement to suspend its investigation.Florida, however, claims this interpretation of the law violates the Tenth Amendment, which protects state sovereignty. The state argues that § 351(f) does not bar its investigation and that preventing Florida from investigating would be unconstitutional. The lawsuit asks for a ruling allowing Florida to continue its investigation or declare the statute unconstitutional as applied in this case. The alleged gunman, Ryan Routh, has already been federally indicted for attempted assassination. The DOJ has not commented on the lawsuit.Florida Says DOJ Is Blocking Their Trump Assassination Probe (1)In a piece I wrote for Forbes, I explore the detrimental impact of Trump's proposed 20% tariff on all imported goods, drawing parallels to the economic struggles caused by tariffs in the late 19th century. Tariffs, I argue, are regressive taxes that disproportionately affect lower-income households by raising prices without adjusting for income. For example, a 20% tariff on electronics would hurt low-income families far more than wealthier ones. While tariffs aim to protect domestic industries, they often fail if no domestic alternative exists, merely increasing costs for consumers. A study shows Trump's tariffs could raise the price of laptops by 46% and smartphones by 26%. The burden of tariffs falls on the countries that impose them, not on exporting nations, which could lead to significant economic strain—an estimated $3.9 trillion cost to U.S. consumers. Historically, high tariffs contributed to economic downturns like the Panic of 1893, and similar policies today risk sparking trade wars and further damaging the economy. Tariffs do little to stimulate domestic industries or protect consumers and should not replace progressive tax policies.Trump's Tariffs Would Cost Trillions—And We Learned This A Century Ago This is a public episode. Acknowledgement of Country// Headlines// Freelance journalist, writer and researcher Ann Louise Deslandes spoke with Priya earlier this week about the recent 10th anniversary of the Ayotzinapa student disappearances from the city of Iguala in Mexico's state of Guerrero. On the night of September 26, 2014, and into the next day, municipal, state, and federal police officers, alongside soldiers from the Mexican Army and members of the criminal syndicate Guerreros Unidos attacked six buses in the city of Iguala, five of which had been temporarily commandeered by students of the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College to travel to Mexico City in order to commemorate the October 2 anniversary of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre. Today, you'll hear part 1 of this interview, where Ann speaks about the nexus of state and paramilitary violence that the students were unwillingly caught in on that night in September 2014, the attempt by then Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto's government to establish a falsified "historical truth" to put inquiries to rest, and the promise of recently retired Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to support the students' families in their fight for justice. Ann is based in Mexico City, and covers politics and culture in Mexico for international English-language media. On this day in legal history, October 24, the United Nations came into being. On October 24, 1945, a major milestone in international legal history was achieved with the ratification of the Charter of the United Nations. This marked the formal establishment of the United Nations (UN), an organization conceived at that time with the noble aim of promoting global peace, security, and cooperation among nations. This day saw the culmination of efforts that began much earlier, during the turbulent times of World War II, aimed at preventing future generations from the scourge of war.The ratification of the Charter represented a collective global aspiration for a new era of international law and diplomacy. On this day, a majority of signatory nations ratified the Charter, symbolizing their commitment to adhere to the principles of international law, uphold human rights, and promote social progress in their respective territories and globally. The United Nations emerged as the successor to the League of Nations, which had failed to prevent the outbreak of the Second World War. The Charter's ratification was not merely a legal formality but a beacon of hope for a war-ravaged world. It symbolized a global consensus on the principles of sovereignty, non-interference, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. This day also witnessed the birth of the UN's principal organs, including the General Assembly and the Security Council, which were entrusted with the monumental task of maintaining international peace and security. The Charter's provisions laid the foundation for international law, setting a precedent for multilateral diplomacy and cooperation.October 24, now celebrated as United Nations Day, commemorates the ratification of the Charter and the establishment of the UN, reminding the global community of the enduring values of international cooperation and the pursuit of peace. This day, enshrined in legal history, continues to inspire nations to work together towards a more equitable and peaceful world. On this day, let's reflect on the vision encapsulated in the Charter and the ongoing journey of the United Nations in navigating the complex landscape of international relations and law, striving to fulfill the lofty ideals set forth on that historic day in 1945. Through the lens of legal history, October 24 stands as a testament to the power of international law and the potential of collective action in shaping a better future for humanity.Of course, let us not only reflect on the lofty aspirations the UN was born in to, but the many shortcomings and failings it has seen–endeavoring, in the small part that we can, to plot a course forward that brings us closer to the ideals set forth in 1945. U.S. Senator Bob Menendez from New Jersey has entered a plea of not guilty to a recent indictment accusing him of acting as an unregistered foreign agent for the Egyptian government. This indictment follows accusations from federal prosecutors on October 12, stating that Menendez had been involved in actions on behalf of Egyptian military and intelligence officials from 2018 to 2022. The plea was made in front of U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein in Manhattan. Previously on October 12, Menendez had commented on the accusations, asserting that adding new charges doesn't make the allegations true.In a prior related case, both Senator Menendez and his wife, Nadine Menendez, were charged with accepting substantial amounts of money and gold bars from three businessmen based in New Jersey. The accusation was that in exchange, Menendez used his influence to aid the Egyptian government and obstruct law enforcement investigations into these businessmen. All defendants, including the Menendez couple, pleaded not guilty to those charges on September 27.On October 18, Nadine Menendez and one of the implicated businessmen, Wael Hana, also pleaded not guilty to the foreign agent charge. The prosecution alleges that Hana facilitated meetings between Senator Menendez and Egyptian officials, who then urged Menendez to approve military aid. As a part of the arrangement, Hana allegedly placed Nadine Menendez on the payroll of a company under his control. The indictment further claims that both Hana and Nadine Menendez transmitted requests and directives from Egyptian officials to Senator Menendez. Despite these serious allegations and charges, Senator Menendez has not heeded calls from fellow Democrats for his resignation.US Senator Menendez pleads not guilty to foreign agent charge | ReutersA federal judge has halted Colorado's attempt to exclude a Christian private school from its taxpayer-funded universal preschool program due to the school's religious-based stance on LGBTQ issues. The ruling came from U.S. District Judge Daniel Domenico, who issued a preliminary injunction against the state's move to bar Darren Patterson Christian Academy from the program or penalize it for its religious policies. The school's policies require employees to adhere to its faith and students to use bathrooms and pronouns aligning with their biological sex, which clashed with Colorado's non-discrimination requirements. The conflict arose from the Colorado Department of Early Childhood's non-discrimination prerequisites, which prevent discrimination based on religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity among other statuses. These prerequisites were tied to a new universal preschool program approved by voters in 2020. Despite being initially approved to participate in this program, Darren Patterson Christian Academy sought an exemption from the non-discrimination requirements which was denied by the department, citing state law mandates.Judge Domenico, however, acknowledged the school's credible fear of enforcement of these requirements, especially in hiring teachers, as the school has a policy of hiring only born-again Christians observing sex within the traditional marriage framework. The judge also noted that mandating the use of preferred pronouns could likely infringe on the school's free speech rights. The verdict drew support from the school's representation, the conservative Christian legal group Alliance Defending Freedom, emphasizing that religious schools shouldn't be forced to abandon their beliefs. This case reflects a wider contention as other religious organizations, including the Archdiocese of Denver, have raised objections against Colorado's non-discrimination mandates, with similar legal challenges pending. The ruling carries a broader implication, as it references a U.S. Supreme Court decision from June in a related Colorado case, which sided with a wedding website designer refusing services for same-sex weddings based on religious beliefs. The unfolding legal scenario in Colorado could potentially impact the balance between state non-discrimination laws and religious freedom, indicating a continuing legal discourse on these intersecting rights.Colorado can't bar Christian school from preschool program over LGBTQ stance, judge says | ReutersPresident Joe Biden's efforts to diversify the federal judiciary are clearly showcased in the US trial court in Seattle, where he selected all seven active judges in the Western District of Washington. These selections are significant for their diversity as all seven judges are either women, people of color, or both, marking a noticeable shift for a court that previously had no women of color. This court scenario offers a lens into a potential future where courts remain understaffed due to nomination battles, only to be filled when a president of the same party as the home state senators comes to power. These developments are consequential for states with two Republican senators, where judicial vacancies are accumulating. Such a scenario could lead to courts dominated by Republican-appointed judges if a Republican wins the 2024 presidential election. The Western District of Washington court, known for high-profile litigation, experienced a severe staffing shortage exacerbated by departures at the end of the Obama era, which remained unaddressed during Trump's term as he prioritized states with Republican home-state senators.Biden's selections are not only diverse demographically but also professionally, bringing a variety of legal expertise to the bench, a departure from the usual appointments of former prosecutors and corporate lawyers. The judges include individuals with backgrounds in immigration law, tribal court, labor law, and civil rights cases. They also represent some of the youngest federal judges, significantly lowering the average age of judges on the bench. The Western District stands out as the largest court in the country where a single president appointed all active judges, showcasing a potential future trend. Other courts like the District of New Jersey and the Northern District of California have also seen a significant number of appointments under Biden, following staffing shortages during the Trump administration. This trend may continue, especially in red states, as the 2024 election approaches, presenting opportunities for a Republican president to reshape courts in favor of their ideological leanings.Amidst these changes, the influx of new judges brings fresh perspectives to the courts, with senior judges playing a crucial role in mentoring and aiding the transition for new appointees. The camaraderie among new judges and the guidance from senior judges contribute to a supportive environment, aiding the new judges in navigating their roles effectively.All-Biden Court Shows Partisan Shift in How Judges Get ConfirmedRadiology provider Akumin Inc. intends to file for bankruptcy and transition into a private entity, with Stonepeak Partners taking over its operations. This decision comes as part of a deal where Akumin will exchange $470 million of its debt, held by Stonepeak, for equity. Additionally, Stonepeak Partners has committed to injecting $130 million of fresh capital into the business. The agreement also stipulates that current shareholders will share a $25 million cash pool. As of the last report, Akumin, which offers radiology and oncology services to approximately 1,000 healthcare facilities in the US, has a market capitalization of about $13 million and holds over $1.3 billion in debt. This restructuring plan is pending approval from the bankruptcy court.Radiology Provider Akumin to Go Bankrupt, Give Keys to CreditorThe Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) faces criticism from banks over its recent open banking proposal, which aims to enable the free sharing of customer financial data while enhancing security. Released on October 19, the proposal encourages banks and credit unions to facilitate customers in sharing their financial information with third-party fintech apps via data aggregators. However, traditional financial institutions fear this might not adequately address data security or liability concerns, and they might challenge it in court if they find the rule lacking in these areas. One primary concern of the banks and credit unions is the potential liability they might face if a data aggregator or fintech app suffers a data breach. They are also worried about the misuse of customer data by fintechs, which could infringe on privacy rights. Although the CFPB proposes to extend existing data security laws to fintechs, modify how customer data is shared, and limit the potential uses of such data, financial institutions believe these measures might not be sufficient to allay their concerns. The proposal also aims to phase out "screen scraping," a practice deemed insecure as it requires users to share their banking credentials with third-party services, which increases the risk of data exposure. The CFPB plans to replace this with the use of application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow consumers to control the financial data they share with third parties, intending to eliminate screen scraping within four years. The industry is already transitioning away from screen scraping, with the CFPB estimating that half of the third-party data access now occurs through APIs. This shift reflects a significant change from just two years ago when most data access was via screen scraping. The proposal also addresses targeted advertising by third parties, an area the CFPB has actively pursued, by setting guardrails on the use of shared data. It also states that data aggregators collecting customer data for credit decisions or other financial activities would be considered credit reporting companies under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, bringing them under direct CFPB supervision for data security requirements compliance. However, banks and credit unions desire a stronger commitment to federal supervision concerning data security, privacy, and consumer protection. They also express concerns about liability for data breaches and potential customer losses, fearing that the liability standards set by Regulation E of the 1978 Electronic Fund Transfer Act might not adequately cover the complexities of open banking, potentially leaving banks liable if fintech companies lack the means to cover customer losses.Banks Say CFPB Needs to Beef Up Security in Open Banking Plan Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Synopsis: In this episode of Pathway to Peace, we take a look at the institution of the United Nations, given the marking of United Nations Day on 24th October. United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations, and yet despite its coming into being, we have seen numerous conflicts emerging and things only appear to be getting worse. The Presenters explore the history of the United Nations and how it came into being; as well as trying to understand where its faults lie and why in its current format it is severely struggling to bring about peace between nation states. Presenters: Kalim Anwer, Anil Tahir & Shams Najum

On Tuesday the SHF UK Activity Contest runs from 1830 to 2130UTC. Using all modes on the bands between 2.3 and 10GHz, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. On Wednesday the UK EI Contest Club 80m contest runs from 2000 to 2100UTC. Using CW only, the exchange is your 6-character locator. The 80m Autumn Series runs from 1900 to 2030UTC on Thursday. Using SSB only the exchange is signal report and serial number. Next weekend is the 48-hour CQ World Wide DX SSB contest. Ending at 2359UTC on the 31st, it uses the 1.8 to 28MHz contest bands. The exchange is signal report and your Zone, which for the UK is 14. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA & G4BAO on Friday the 22nd of October. After a week of sunspots and DX fun it looks like we are back in the doldrums again. The Sun currently has just one sunspot visible, meaning the sunspot number is 11. This represents one sunspot in one group. There has been DX to be had, mostly thanks to DXpeditions, including Guinea Bissau, J5T, The Kingdom of Eswatini, 3DA0WW, and Sao Tome and Principe, S90K. These have been relatively easy to work and brought much-needed excitement to the HF bands. Geomagnetic conditions have been mixed, with the Kp index hitting four on Tuesday. This was the result of a large coronal hole that was Earth-facing earlier in the week. Next week, NOAA predicts the solar flux index will climb again to the high 80s, ending the week in the low to mid-90s. This is likely due to a large active region that is visible on the STEREO Ahead spacecraft's imager and which should rotate into view over the next few days. This may bring a surge in activity again, which should be welcomed by HF operators. And now the VHF and up propagation news. After a reminder of how unsettled Autumn can be, this weekend will see a weak and transient ridge crossing the country, and a possible brief Tropo window, especially to the east across the North Sea. Apart from that, the unsettled autumn flavour continues through the whole of next week and, as we have seen recently, that can mean some pretty wet and windy weather. Rain scatter on the GHz bands is, of course, an option in these conditions, but there is little else to bring cheer unless meteor scatter and aurora come into play. Today the Moon is at apogee, so EME path losses are at their maximum. Moon declination reaches maximum positive declination again on Tuesday so we'll see the Moon reaching its highest elevations at its zenith. The Orionids shower is still active and the Leonis Minorids peaks today, so there's still some interest for meteor scatter enthusiasts. The best time for reflections is, as always, around dawn. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

According to the EPA: “Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of [anthropogenic] chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many other chemicals. PFAS have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries around the globe, including in the United States since the 1940s. [These] chemicals are very persistent in the environment and in the human body – meaning they don’t break down and they can accumulate over time. There is evidence that exposure to PFAS can lead to adverse human health effects. PFAS can be found in: - Food packaged in PFAS-containing materials, processed with equipment that used PFAS, or grown in PFAS-contaminated soil or water. - Commercial household products, including stain- and water-repellent fabrics, nonstick products (e.g., Teflon), polishes, waxes, paints, cleaning products, and fire-fighting foams (a major source of groundwater contamination at airports and military bases where firefighting training occurs). - Workplace, including production facilities or industries (e.g., chrome plating, electronics manufacturing or oil recovery) that use PFAS. - Drinking water, typically localized and associated with a specific facility (e.g., manufacturer, landfill, wastewater treatment plant, firefighter training facility). - Living organisms, including fish, animals and humans, where PFAS have the ability to build up and persist over time. …Although PFOA and PFOS are no longer manufactured in the U.S., they are still produced internationally and can be imported in consumer goods such as carpet, leather and apparel, textiles, paper and packaging, coatings, rubber and plastics.” Learn more at https://www.epa.gov/pfas/basic-information-pfas On Truth to Power each week, we gather Forward Radio programmers and friends to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! 24 October marks United Nations Day, the day the UN was founded, in 1945. The UN Charter came into effect in 1945, with United Nations Day being celebrated from 1948 onwards. And nearly 75 years since the United Nations was founded, the world body is desperately in need of some reform. The structure of the UN of 2019, still reflects the situation in the 1940s. Clearly, it’s time for the UN Security Council to change - and add new members to its fold. This podcast is based on an opinion piece by Shashi Tharoor and explains why the UN needs to catch up with the times, or risk becoming irrelevant. Hosts: Vishnu Gopinath and Viraj Gaur

The Art of Being Peace

For the Fifth International Buddhist Conference in May 2008, the Venerable Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh was invited to offer the opening keynote address. The event took place at the National Convention Center, Hanoi, Vietnam with the theme Buddhist Contribution to Building a Just, Democratic and Civilized Society. Hosted by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and co-organized by International Organizing Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and National Coordinating Committee for the United Nations Day of Vesak. The date is May 13, 2008 and both audio and video are available below. The talk is 53-minutes.  Promoting Peace Practicing Buddhism is the art of being peace, the art of promoting peace, in the society and in the world. We all should learn this art. We all have elements of war in our body. Practicing Buddhism is recognizing these elements so that we can then transform these elements. In the Sutra on Mindful Breathing, the Buddha provided us the practice to release the tension in our body. It only takes a few minutes. If we can release the tension in our body, then our body can learn to heal itself. When we make peace body, we can begin to make peace with our feelings and emotions. Do you know how to recognize your emotions? This is the art of making peace with ourselves. Our body, and our feelings and emotions. The Buddha also taught in this sutra how to recognize and transform our mental formations. The Buddhist practice means going home to oneself. To restore peace. How does this work in the family setting? Or in the school setting? Why is it important for parents and teachers to learn this art of being peace?  Deep Listening and Loving Speech During our time teaching in the west, we have also taught listening with compassion and using loving speech to restore communication. In Plum Village, we have practiced this intentionally with groups in conflict - Israelis and Palestinians. What is outlined above is used to illustrate practical application with these groups. In Mahayana Buddhism, we have the Bodhissatva Avalokiteshvara - the bodhissatva of compassion. They do this practice in order to suffer less.  Right View is the view of dependent co-arising, no-self, interbeing. Practitioners should always remember to maintain this right view in their daily life. How does this look between a father and a son? We learn that suffering is not an individual matter. Everything this is linked to everything else. To protect other species on earth, and the earth itself, is to protect ourselves. This is the insight of interbeing.  The Five Mindfulness Trainings Thay reminds of Unesco’s Manifesto 2000 which Thay helped to create with several Nobel Peace Prize laureates. There are six points and has been signed by 75-million people. This arose from the teachings of Buddhism and are very similar to the Five Mindfulness Trainings. If we practice these, we will have peace in ourselves and in the world. Just signing is not enough; we need to put it into practice. This is why we recommend forming ourselves into communities - in our families, schools, workplace, and within governments. These can all become a sangha and bring these six points (and Five Mindfulness Trainings) into practice.  The practice of deep ecology, mindful consumption and the Five Mindfulness Trainings. The trainings also teach us not to exploit people or the earth. We have been talking a lot about peace, but we have not done enough for the cause of peace. Whatever we can do in terms of thinking, speech, and action could be considered as an offering to the Lord Budhha. As an example, we learn how Deer Park Monastery in California is using solar energy and having car free days. Reducing consumption, learning to live more simply, and to have more time to take care of oneself and our beloved ones is very crucial and is the way of peace.  Living happily in the present moment. And taking care of the present moment is taking care of the future.

The Leftscape is excited to share an extended interview with Doc Coyle, guitarist for the platinum-selling band Bad Wolves and host of The Ex-Man podcast. A day before heading out on a major tour of Europe, Doc took the time to share candid thoughts on leaving his former band God Forbid and the impetus for starting his podcast, how meteoric success with the song "Zombie" changed the game, and the strange circumstance of having become part of the story of Cranberries singer Delores O'Riordan's untimely passing. In conversation with Robin Renée, he takes us on an astute journey through his thoughts on the experience of people of color in rock/metal music, opening possibilities within black culture, artists speaking up about politics (or not), the problems with hyperbolic partisan thinking and the need to turn the dial toward empathy. Mary McGinley expresses frustration with the news this week, as it seems no one is taking Trump to task for the truth about his self-made man myth having been revealed in the New York Times. Major world events are happening including the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but people are distracted by Kanye West's visit to the White House. The comment leads to a discussion of a painting by Panhandle Slim (Scott Stanton) of Kanye wearing a Devo energy dome. Robin is psyched that Devo has been nominated for the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and fans can vote. This week, we celebrate United Nations Day, National Food Day, National Bologna Day (because bologna isn't really a food?), Business Women's Week, Chemistry Week, and Massage Therapy Week. Among things that happened on this day are the last performance of Harry Houdini in 1926 and the founding of the United Nations in 1945. October 24th birthdays: The Big Bopper, Kevin Kline, Bob Kane, Bill Wyman, Drake, and Denise Levertov. Wendy Sheridan and Mary McGinley go on a journey through their favorite Kevin Kline movies and get a bit turned around about the plot of Sophie's Choice. Wendy likes Kline's current recurring role as Mr. Calvin Fischoeder in Bob's Burgers. httpss://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XaS93WMRQQ httpss://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQP2Iow-4ZA Mary once worked as a magician's assistant and performed the Houdini trick, "Metamorphosis." Rathinavani 90.8 CR Broadcast World Development Information Day Special Talk by Rathinam Technical Campus ECE Dept Student. In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly decided to institute a World Development Information Day coinciding with United Nations Day on October 24. The General Assembly had the object of drawing the attention of world public-opinion each year to development problems and the necessity of strengthening international co-operation to solve them.[1] The day was further recognized as the date on which the International Development Strategy for the Second Nations Development Decade was adopted in 1970. On May 17, 1972, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) proposed measures for information dissemination and for the mobilization of public opinion relative to trade and development problems. These became known as resolution 3038 (XXVII), which the UN General Assembly passed on December 19, 1972. This resolution called for introducing World Development Information Day to help draw the attention of people worldwide to development problems. A further aim of the event is to explain to the general public why it is necessary to strengthen international cooperation to find ways to solve these problems. The assembly also decided that the day should coincide with United Nations Day to stress the central role of development in the UN's work. World Development Information Day was first held on October 24, 1973, and has been held on this date each year since then. In recent years many events have interpreted the title of the day slightly differently. These have concentrated on the role that modern information-technologies, such as the Internet and mobile telephones free from digital divide can play in alerting people and finding solutions to problems of trade and development. One of the specific aims of World Development Information Day was to inform and motivate young people and this change may help to further this aim.
