Today, I am talking to Winter Brook, a psychic and transfiguration medium, reiki master, spiritualist minister, teacher, attorney, and humanitarian. We met through Mavis Pittilla's Advanced Mediumship. I did it two years in a row and we were in a circle together in the cohort we were both in. We didn't have much time to engage with one another there, but we continued to follow each other on Facebook. his week Shawn Gilmore and John Ward hang out with paranormal investigator, historian and founder of Village Haunts; While visiting various destinations in the United States Don Traynor never felt satisfied with generic ninety minute historic tours aboard a double decker bus or an amphibious quacker car. The prerecorded vignettes about the points of historical significance just didn’t suffice as the vehicle was cruising past them at 35 miles per hour. Maybe, if you were lucky, you’d get a few extra seconds to snap a picture if the red lights were working in your favor. Then he discovered historical ghost tours. What started with ghost tour on a warm October evening during a visit to Haunted Happenings in Salem, Massachusetts, the shores of which his oldest descendent in America arrived upon on June 24th 1625, soon became a ritual for Don no matter what location he would visit. He found historical ghost tours to be the perfect conduit to fuel his interest in history, his desire to stand in the footsteps of the past, and to provide a forum to discuss paranormal events experienced by guides and patrons similar to his own. In the years to follow Don continued to explore the connection between historical locations and the paranormal with focused attention on connecting to the residual activity.   Lynne Forget attended her first Spiritualist church in Hamilton, Ontario in 1987 and was totally fascinated with the demonstration of Mediumship she saw there.  After that she wanted to gobble up everything she could that had to do with Spiritualism.  Lynne is now a graduate of the Ministerial Program at Fellowships of the Spirit in Lily Dale NY, and has also completed the Morris Pratt Institute course on the History of Modern Spiritualism. Lynne says that what has KEPT her a Spiritualist these many years is the freedom Spiritualists have to explore and search for the truth; the fact that Spiritualists are free thinkers – not bound by dogma or creed – but free to explore life, great teachers and masters, great books and writings, even all the great religions, in their search for truth.  As a result of this great freedom, Lynne brings the perspective of both a practicing medium and a curious student to her Ministry. She has been a member of Lily Dale Assembly for 28 years, and has been a Registered Medium in Lily Dale for 15 years.  Lynne considers it a great privilege to be a registered medium in Lily Dale, and to be able to demonstrate evidential mediumship both publicly at the outdoor services and privately in her Lily Dale home. As Jessie Crockett, she has the delightful Sugar Grove cozy mysteries, feature mayhem and maple syrup in equal doses. As Jessica Estevao, she has just launched a new series, set in 1898, and featuring a heroine with a dark past and an otherworldly gift. Jessica, thank you for joining me. Jessica Estevao: Thanks for having me. LB: I want to talk to you about your writing career. You have both a cozy series, a couple of other books, and now a new historical series. But first I want to ask, why mysteries? JE: I love mysteries. When I was a small child, my father used to travel on business and when he was gone, my mother would let me stay up and watch Agatha Christie mystery movies on television with her, which was of course a hugely special treat. So that was one aspect of it I suppose. But I think one of the reasons also was that the first chapter book that I remember reading was The Bobbsey Twins at the Seashore. And I just remember feeling so accomplished at reading a chapter book instead of a picture book. And I think that sense of delight associated with mysteries has remained my entire life. As an author, one of the things that I truly love about writing in the mystery genre is that the challenge is to conceal as well as to reveal. And it's really delightful to use that scaffolding to tell a story and to challenge yourself to tell both of those stories, what's real and what's misdirection. LB: Now, your first book was Live Free or Die, and you took home a Daphne for that right away. JE: I did. LB: You took the world by storm. So how did that book happen? JE: It kind of came as a response to a semi-tragedy here in my village. My postmistress in the village had been here for years when I started to write that book and then she retired. And I missed her terribly. And it seemed that the only way to get back the right sort of postmistress was to make my own. But in reality, we have had a couple of truly lovely postmistress and since then, but I like to think that sending out that energy to the universe got them for us. LB: It got you back your perfect postmistress. JE: Yes. The postmistress in a very small village really is a wonderful character, to be at the heart of the town and to set the tone and hours did it beautifully. And I just really wanted to honor that and recapture that in writing. LB: You wrote that first book, you really did take the mystery community by storm. But you went into a new series. JE: I did.
