Episode 140 Elizabeth 'Liz' Barraza Part 2     In this episode,  we continue the discussion with Robert and Rosemary Nuelle who discuss the tragic January, 2019 murder of their daughter Liz Barraza in Tomball, Texas, and their efforts to see her killer brought to justice. They talk about the many issues they have faced in the aftermath of Liz's murder, and some of the resources and allies that they have turned to for help, including Andy Kahan, director of Victim services & advocacy of Houston, who also joins us in this episode to talk about the work he does in support of people like Liz's family. There is currently a reward of up to $50,000 for information in this case. If you have any details about the murder of Elizabeth Barraza please call (713) 222-TIPS and share what you know. You can also go to crime-stoppers.org to submit your tip. Because Liz's case has gotten a lot of media and online attention, some rumors and inaccuracies in the case have made their way out there. Episode 139 Elizabeth 'Liz' Barraza Part 1 of 2 On the morning of January 25,2019 just before sunrise, 29 year old Elizabeth 'Liz' Barraza was setting up for a garage sale in her yard in Tomball, Texas. She and her husband Sergio were about to celebrate their 5th wedding anniversary with a vacation to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, so the extra cash from the sale would come in handy. Sergio had just left for work when a Black Nissan truck pulled up and turned around before parking in front of the Barraza's home. After parking, the driver got out and walked toward Liz, and she said good morning to them likely expecting her first customer of the day. However, this person wasn't out bargain shopping, they were targeting Liz. They pulled a revolver and after several seconds of interaction with Liz, they shot her three times. When Liz fell to the ground, the shooter stood over her and shot her a fourth time before jumping back into the Black truck and fleeing the scene. Although there were no witnesses to the shooting, a combination of grainy video and distorted audio surveillance from both the Barraza's home, and a neighbor's captured the events of that morning. The shooting, the killer, and their vehicle were all caught by the surveillance systems, but frustratingly, the shooter has not been identified.  Seconds after the shots rang out, a neighbor called 911, and as they looked out to see what was going on, the Black Nissan drove back by the Barraza's, and the caller was able to give the description of the truck to the 911 dispatcher. A BOLO of the truck was quickly issued, and police and first responders descended on the scene. Moments later, a truck fitting the suspect vehicle description was spotted and pulled over by police not far from the Barraza home, but the driver supposedly had a legitimate reason to be in the area, and was let go. Meanwhile, Liz Barraza was life-flighted to a hospital for the four gunshots she had suffered, but sadly she wouldn't survive, and passed away in the hospital. When police searched area surveillance cameras close to the Barraza's home, they discovered that the Black Nissan truck had stalked the area hours before the shooting driving slowly past the Barraza's home. Moments before the shooting, other surveillance tracked the movements of the truck before it headed to the Barraza's home, and it was clear from the footage that the driver was waiting for Sergio to leave for work in order to attack Liz.  Since there was no clear motive in the shooting, finding a suspect has been difficult. Liz was well-liked and sociable with no known enemies. She volunteered her time for children at the local hospital, and was a member of the 501st Legion, a group dedicated to Star Wars Cos-play. Although many people have pointed the finger at Liz's husband Sergio, he has cooperated with police and taken and passed at least one polygraph, and a close look at Liz and Sergio's lives and marriage by police, found no evidence of financial issues, infidelity, or any other clue that would establish a motive. The best clue in the case may be the Black Nissan truck driven by Liz's killer. Police describe it as a Nissan Frontier Pro 4X edition crew cab,  model year 2013 or newer with a Pro4X sticker on the rear of the truck. Details of the shooter are not exact due to the poor quality of the video footage, and it's not even clear if the shooter is a man or woman. In the video footage, they appear to be wearing a long robe, coat, gown, or dress and what looks to be thigh-high White Go Go boots. They appear to either have long hair, or they are wearing a wig. The gun used to kill Liz is believed to be a .380 revolver.  There is currently a reward of up to $50,000 for information in this case. If you have any details about the murder of Elizabeth Barraza please call (713) 222-TIPS and share what you know. You can also go to crime-stoppers.org to submit your tip.  In this episode, Liz's parents Robert and Rosemary Nuelle discuss the tragic death of their daughter, and their efforts to see her killer brought to justice. This chat I am joined by the winner of  ‘I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here 2023, Liz Ellis.' 'Liz' is a retired Australian netball player, she was a member of the national team from 1992 until 2007 and captained for the last four - of those years. She is the most capped international player for Australian Netball and has been a fantastic commentator and broadcast of sport in Australia since.  'Liz' reluctantly entered the jungle after a pep talk from her teenage daughter and while she wasn't a favourite at the start of the competition her popularity grew more and more as people fell in love with her easy going nature.  I will ask 'Liz Ellis' if 'Kerri Anne' has been in touch since her win and if 'Liz' thinks she 'KAK' should have stayed. We will find out if those food trials are as bad as they look and what toll they have on your body post trial.  We will discuss how how 'Dr Chris Brown' celebrated the final episode and who 'Liz' thinks could replace him next year.   Plus we will get plenty of exclusives from behind the scenes of 'I'm a Celebrity' which is now on ‘Network Ten' - which you can catch up on - on ‘Ten Play' if you have fallen behind.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Today's episodes I have a full debrief with the most talked about player ever seen on 'Australian Survivor. It is 'King George' from the latest season of ‘Heroes vs villains!' We first were introduced to 'George Mladenov' on 'Brains vs Brawn' two years ago but nothing could have prepared us for what he had in store for us this year. More Conflict! More strategy! more awkward conversations! (this time on the beach) and one epic Tribal Council that broke the internet! 'George' polarised his audience but also made this season what it was.... and I know 'liz' has won (congratulations) but I think 'George' is the real series-winner from 'Heroes VS Villains' and I am very excited to talk to him today. We will talk about George's ability to read people game and if he managed to manipulate and control his fellow players. George will discuss his pregame preparation and if he and 'Hayley' did get together to plan out the season?  I'll ask about the impact 'George's' game had on the others and where his friendship with 'Simon,' 'Shonee' and 'Liz' has landed. I will also unpack that epic tribal-council and find out if 'George' thinks he went too far... and if he felt he was antagonising 'Simon.'  Plus we will some exclusives on the whole series including some behind the scenes secrets which I am sure you will love.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today is a great day, for the first time in British history the courts have ruled that 'Liz', a grooming gang survivor should receive compensation from her perpetrator. We at Hearts of Oak are so glad to have been a part of this process along with Lord Pearson's financing, Robin Tilbrook's legal expertise and Charlie Peters from GB News' journalistic skills and we hope it can open the floodgates to thousands of other survivors. It has truly been an honour to get to know Elizabeth through this long and arduous process, her courage and strength are an inspiration to us all. It is unbelievable that anyone who has gone through such a traumatic experience must find the money to pay for a separate legal bid to force an already convicted rapist to pay compensation. Our government and MP's have accepted this situation and we have not heard of a single MP who has tried to change the law so that survivors are automatically awarded compensation from their attackers. This episode we have a brief talk with Elizabeth and then discuss this landmark ruling and ask why no one up till now has funded and ran a similar case. Why are our MP's silent on child rape. Why has no one been prosecuted in our institutions for facilitating child rape and how does this case open the doors to other survivors to get compensation from their rapists. I Bet an Ounce of Gold that Fed would Cut Rates Today I officially won an ounce of gold! I am referencing a bet that I made back in January of this year. During a panel discussion, I said that I though that the Fed was more likely to cut rates in 2019, than hike them.  I was the only person on the panel who believed that.  Everybody else thought that the Fed would be raising rates, which pretty much was the conventional wisdom in early January. Check out My Forecasts in December and January on YouTube So today, the Fed cut rates, which is what I have been saying they would do.  In fact, not only did I put up a small YouTube video of that bet, as well as a video of the entire panel on my YouTube channel. But I also cut a minute or so segment from my interview on the Monday in December 2018 the week the Fed raised rates, 2 days later on a Wednesday.  That was the final hike where the Fed went from 2% to 2.25%, to 2.25% to 2.5%. Fed Cut Rates by 25 Basis Points I was interviewed by Liz Claman- by the way I will be on Liz Claman's show tomorrow - they've renamed the show it is the Claman Countdown. But when I was on Liz' show back in December I made the forecast then: If the Fed raised rates in December that week, which, I thought they would, (everybody believed they would - they wouldn't want to disappoint the markets) I said that it would be the last hike, and that the very next move that the Fed would make would be to cut rates. And that is exactly what they did today. They cut rates by 25 basis points. December's Rate Hike Erased So they basically took away the last rate hike and the rate is now where it was prior to the December rate hike. Now, I believe that cutting rates was a mistake.  I think the Fed should have already raised rates by more than they have. Not because the U.S. economy is in great shape, because it's in lousy shape. It is a gigantic bubble.

Liz and I start off the show talking about how she never intended to be a musician. Liz' background was in film and video and she even had a full ride to film school. Due to a variety of factors, she declined the scholarship and continued work in tv/film. But, she kept feeling nudges toward music. Liz describes how she was certain that becoming a musician was not for her, but that God pursued her and how she said yes to her new path. In the second half of the show Liz and I talk about how her new album Save Me, and what it's like to share her music with the world. She describes her shows and music as the story of her testimony, and that it is a sacred time for her when she's on stage. I loved hearing her share stories of people she's met and how Jesus has guided her and the songs she creates. You guys isn't it so amazing - so many times on the show we've heard women tell us how God has nudged them into things they would have never expected or originally said yes to! Then, we get to hear how He continually pursues us and does such incredible things like in Liz' story today - I love it! {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour - subscribe using your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Google Play).  And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends!} Links from the Show Liz' Website Liz' albums: There's A Light and Save Me What Liz is loving: having more things revealed to her about empowering women, getting to create  music her way, meeting people that are excited to be a part of the empowering women movement What is Liz is reading: Fashioned to Reign by Kris Vallotton Connect with Liz Instagram // Facebook // Twitter Connect with Jamie + The Happy Hour Facebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTube Stay connected and subscribe to The Happy Hour Newsletter! Cooking with kids can be messy, zany, and best of all, very rewarding. Teaching kids how to cook and getting them comfy in the kitchen (especially with fruit and vegetable preparation) can set them up for a lifetime of healthy eating habits. August is Kids Eat Right Month, so it’s only fitting that on today's show, I tackle the topic of Kids in the Kitchen. Join the fun today as we cook our way through recipes for Chicken & Fresh Corn Salad and Roasted Cauliflower Steaks with Pistachio Pesto, and hear from my sister-in-law and niece about the innovative way kids in England are now learning how to cook! On today’s show, I take you behind the scenes to two kid/adult cooking classes I taught at Nantucket Culinary this summer and the recipes we prepared. My special guests on the show are my British my sister-in-law, Karen (aka “Mrs. Broccoli”) and my niece, Daisy. We discuss efforts underway in England to teach kids how to cook through a cool, contemporary curriculum called, Food Tech What you’ll hear in this episode: The small cooking class I taught in June at Nantucket Culinary, where we made Roasted Radishes, Homemade Coleslaw, Fish Tacos with Salmon, and Apple Berry Crisp. Why you shouldn’t shy away from teaching kids how to slice and dice fruits and veggies. The July class, which was bigger, where we made Chicken & Fresh Corn Salad, Make-Your-Own Smoothies, Chirp Chirp Deviled Eggs, and Roasted Cauliflower Steaks with Pistachio Pesto. 'Liz’s Chicken Salad' made with fresh corn kernels, fresh tarragon, Dijon mustard, mayo, and salt and pepper: “When you add some fresh peas it tastes just like summer.” Teaching kids about using a "Mother Spoon" to avoid double-dipping. How to prepare and make cauliflower steaks. Why a mini food processor works best for making pistachio pesto, which is made with EVOO, fresh basil, fresh tarragon, grated Parmesan cheese, pistachios, Dijon mustard, honey, garlic, and kosher salt and pepper. “Mrs. Broccoli” and her daughter, Daisy, talk about the food and nutrition scene in England where they live. Not as many food additives and artificial colors are used in the UK Children pack their lunches according to strict rules. Only fruit, sandwich, and water are allowed---no chips and no soft drinks Hear all about the Turkey Twizzler Time in England and their school lunch revolution What Daisy enjoys cooking most: crepes (called pancakes in England) and smoothies. Daisy’s Food Tech class, where she learns about kitchen skills, nutrition, and how to make different foods including bread rolls, omelettes, pasta sauce, and Victoria Sponge Cake. The goal of the Food Tech class is for the kids to practice and learn at school and then go home and make the foods for their families. Other components of the program include woodworking, textiles, and graphic design. Why Karen and I love Chef Yotam Ottolenghi, an Israeli-British chef, restaurant owner, and food writer. How Karen became “Mrs. Broccoli.” You're going to love this story! Daisy’s top takeaways from her class: kitchen safety, knife skills, and how to spot the difference between organic and free-range eggs. Resources: Kids in the Kitchen - For Kids Eat Right Month this August, I have joined up with fellow dietitians and healthy family food bloggers to share tips for getting kids into the kitchen. My guest for The Happy Hour # 199 is Liz Curtis Higgs. Liz is an author, speaker, and has three abiding passions: encouraging her sisters in Christ, exploring the stories of women in the Bible, and writing novels set in Scotland of old. Liz has written 37 books and travels around the world speaking and encouraging women. Liz is mom to Matthew and Lillian (recent college grads!) and when she's not traveling she loves being home with her husband Bill and her twin tabby cats Boaz and Samson. Friends, I am so excited to share today's episode with you and I know you are going to love hearing from Liz about her story, how she came to write about the "Bad Girls" in the Bible, and her current fight with cancer. No matter what the circumstance, Liz brings hope and encouragement for us all. Liz starts off the show sharing how she came to know Jesus and how He saved her from a life she knew was leading her towards a dead end. She tells us how a couple who had newly come to know Jesus "loved her into the Kingdom" by simply sharing what they had so recently learned. I love that so much because it affirms that we can't know it all, but that doesn't mean God can't use us in ways that impact others. We also talk about shame and how it can stop us from telling our stories or truly experiencing freedom. Liz tells us how she never intended to write "Bad Girls of the Bible" and how God led her down a path that opened more doors than she ever could have imagined. In the last half of the episode, Liz talks about her current fight with cancer - her "annoyance" she calls it. She candidly talks about what it's like to face less than promising news and how even amidst this suffering she sees God's faithfulness each day. She says "no matter what tomorrow brings, God will not be shaken." {You can listen to the show HERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends. Tá Falado: Brazilian Portuguese Pronunciation for Speakers of Spanish

Let's see if we have this right? Michelle's family gave her the nickname 'witch' because of how moody she became when under stress at school, right? Wow, that's a mean nickname, at least from a North American point of view. This lesson is a bit different in that we don't look at pronunciation directly, but we do look at the little extra words that people add to their speech, like, you know, umm, well, like, whatever, you know? English Michelle: You know that Americans think it is strange the way we give nicknames to other people. Valdo: Come on, tell me, you mean they don't use nicknames? Michelle: So, look, when I tell them that my nickname in Brazil is 'witch' nobody believes it. They think it is strange and a little cruel, you know? Valdo: Hold on ... you mean they don't say things like 'fat', 'skinny', 'short', 'German'? Wow, this is the way that we show, you know, friendship in Brazil, right? Michelle: You know, it's not that they don't use nicknames, but it's different, you know? Generally they just use diminutive forms of a name like 'Liz for Elizabeth, 'Bob' for Robert, you see? Valdo: OK then, so it's not a funny name like the ones that we use that come from some physical characteristic that the person hás for example. I've got it, OK, we'll talk more later, OK?
