When it comes to writing, there is so much happening behind the scenes. It is so much more than sitting down, grabbing a pencil, and putting words on paper. In today's episode, we'll explore the challenges students face when it comes to writing. From motor skills to executive functioning, today's guest explains the complexities of the writing process. Shanna Trombetta is an Educational Therapist and she joins the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast to help us better understand not only the writing process and the challenges students face, but also ways we can support struggling students at home and in the classroom. She shares practical strategies and insights to empower parents and educators in guiding children through the whirlwind of creativity, skill, and determination that is writing. Show Notes: [3:16] - A lot of learners who come into Shanna's practice struggle with writing. [4:24] - Shanna describes some of the things that are commonly a struggle when it comes to writing. There's so much happening at one time. [5:39] - It is common for students to have a lot of great ideas, but the mechanics of writing hold them up, and they wind up not writing anything. [7:32] - One way to support kids with writing is by providing them with a structure. [9:37] - People who don't struggle with executive functioning can typically create their own structure. But many kids need to be shown how to organize their information. [11:24] - When she works with students, Shanna helps them develop and use tools. [13:08] - What is background knowledge and why is it important for writing? [15:01] - Shanna describes writing around themes to help with structure. [16:57] - Chunking is a great strategy that helps students take one step at a time. [19:01] - Keeping a checklist as they write is another tool that can alleviate the stress of keeping track of things in their mind. [21:00] - Assessment data is really helpful for Shanna so she knows to target some of the spelling patterns that are a challenge for a student. [23:16] - So often students know what they want to write about. Strategies to get the information out are not “cheating.” [26:22] - Writing is an area where many students experience stress. Make it fun. [28:30] - While struggling, it is hard to remain motivated. Shanna shares some ways to keep students positive while they're learning. This interview with an amazing couple – Rhoda and Gochin – who have operated a small family-style board and care home in the San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles) for the last 22 years, will leave you feeling anxious at the end. And that is the objective: to stimulate not just a sense of urgency, but emergency, to protect precious beds that provide homes for people living with mental illness in our city, in the county, in the state of California. In this interview, we move past the sterile staff reports that document the steady loss of facilities and beds. These are important statistics (see below for links) but what often is lost is the human impact of this emergency. Through Rhoda and Gochin's story, you will gain a glimpse into: The people who are living in the home, entrusted to their care, who feel safe and secure. What happens to them if this facility closes? The families of adult children with mental illness who worry about where their loved one will end up once they pass away and can no longer pay attention to the situation. The owner/operators of these facilities, who too often work for free, dip into their personal finances to make ends meet, and as Gochin says, “suffer in silence.” I am grateful to Rhoda and Gochin who were willing to trust me with this interview. I am also grateful to Barbara Wilson (interview guest in Season Two of this podcast) who is a tireless advocate for saving the board and care system and arranged for the meetings to prepare for this interview. In this interview, I reference recent reports documenting the state of the board and care crisis: County of Los Angeles, report issued June 5, 2023. City of Los Angeles, report issued May 12, 2023. I reference the petition sponsored by the Los Angeles Residential Care Association (LARCA). Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspends an elected Florida prosecutor for disobeying laws. The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors is trying to pass a ballot measure granting them the power to remove an elected sheriff. While at first glance, these two policies seem similar. Almost 100 years after the government took their land, it has been returned. This week, the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors unanimously approved that a beachfront property known as Bruce's Beach be transferred back to the descendants of its former owners, Willa and Charles Bruce. The Bruces bought their little corner of Los Angeles in 1912 and, in an era when segregated beaches were common, constructed the West Coast's first resort for black people, the Guardian reported. In 1924, after the relentless harassment of racist neighbors and the Ku Klux Klan failing to push out the community the Bruces built, the Manhattan Beach City Council condemned their portion of the neighborhood and seized over two dozen properties through eminent domain... My guest, Roxanne Beckford Hoge, is a mama, entrepreneur, and candidate for a seat on the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors. Roxanne Beckford was born in Kingston, Jamaica. She emigrated from the island in the late 70s, graduated from boarding school in South Florida, and from Davidson College with a degree in Psychology in 1986. After working in public and community relations in Miami for Citibank and the Rouse Company, she arrived in Southern California in the late 80s to become a working actor. She has done that now for almost thirty years, starting out playing Whitley's cousin on A Different World and continuing to appear in television and movie roles even while marrying her husband and having and raising four children. "I cannot imagine living anywhere other than Los Angeles," says the community activist and volunteer. When LA's children and businesses were sacrificed over the past two years, while vulnerable seniors and our homeless population were ignored and all of us felt the rise in crime, we all looked to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, and found most of them completely lacking." Her work to help connect disaffected parents and question political leadership led to a profile in Bari Weiss' Common Sense. Certainly one of Hollywood's most glamorous ladies, Ruta Lee is also one of its most multifaceted and top-notched civic contributors. Born in Montreal, Lee is the daughter of a Lithuanian tailor. While at Hollywood High, Lee's career in show business began at the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre… as an usherette, then candy girl. Nikita Gale, an artist, and Alexander Provan, Triple Canopy's editor, are the hosts of Medium Rotation. In the first episode, they ask who we are—and what we can do—as listeners, members of an audience, and bodies in concert (or in conflict). They introduce the first season of the podcast, Omniaudience, by speaking about the revelation of arena concerts, the performance of listening by CEOs and self-help gurus, and how the demand to be heard manifests in protest and property violence. And they listen to MC Hammer, Van Halen, Pauline Oliveros, Kimberly Jones, and the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners. Provan and Gale have been collaborating for several years on work related to the politics of listening, which has involved a residency at the Hammer Museum as well as a series of publications, performances, and conversations as part of Triple Canopy's twenty-sixth issue, Two Ears and One Mouth. In his essay for the issue “The Great Equalizer,” Provan writes about the relationship between speaking and listening, especially in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. In this episode, Gale and Provan speak about the composer Pauline Oliveros, whose writing and teaching are available via the Center for Deep Listening. In order of appearance, the music and other recordings played on this episode are: a concert by MC Hammer, 1991; a concert by Van Halen, 1995; a master class by Pauline Oliveros, 2012; a hearing by the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners, 2020; and a video of the author Kimberly Jones by the filmmaker David Jones, 2020.Nikita Gale is an artist who lives in Los Angeles. Early in the pandemic in Los Angeles, an elderly Korean woman who'd been verbally harassed and pelted with rocks in Koreatown went to her local police station to report the incident in her limited English. But as the woman later told community advocates, police opted not to take a report and provided no follow-up or referrals to organizations that provide counseling or legal advice. A year later, the woman cries talking about the attack and sought counseling on her own, according to Connie Chung Joe, the executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-LA. "When victims are brave enough to come forward and share their experiences with the police," Joe told the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners on Tuesday, "having the police say that nothing can be done discourages victims and their communities from relying on the police again, particularly for immigrant victims who face language and cultural barriers." Verbal and physical attacks on Asian Americans have been taking place in Los Angeles for the last year, but recent violence against Asian elders captured on video around the country, and last month's assault in the heart of L.A.'s Koreatown on a 27-year-old Korean American man, now has leaders like the mayor and city attorney speaking more forcefully about the problem. L.A. police commissioners spent more than an hour at their meeting Tuesday discussing anti-Asian incidents and taking input from civil rights leaders, who said officers needed to get better at recognizing hate crimes and being sensitive to victims but they also made clear they were not calling for more policing. LAPD recorded 15 hate crimes against AAPI community members in 2020 — up 114% from 2019. Three cases of anti-Asian hate crimes have been documented so far in 2021. By contrast, civil rights organizations received reports of more than 100 incidents in L.A. between March and December of last year. Today on AirTalk, we’ll explore why this trend has persisted and what local leaders are saying about how law enforcement is and should be handling these types of incidents. Nick Jensen from the California Native Plant Society, and Jack Eidt from Wild Heritage Planners and SoCal 350, discuss the dangers to urban sustainability, fiscal health of LA County and the impacts on wild and endangered plants and animals with host Jessica Aldridge. Today we have music mentoring with J R Richards from Dishwalla! He helps our protege (Vanaka) better understand how to turn their band into a BRAND!When I first launched the Vanaka project and the One Ride company, I went to a large law firm with a big reputation in the music business, thinking that would really provide some great support and key contacts. But I ended up relegated to a lawyer low on the totem pole who had little interest in my project, its purpose and me – and little patience for my lack of technical knowledge. After a couple more false starts, I finally found the right one-man firm interested in both me and my ideas. We formed a solid business relationship and a friendship, and he has been invaluable to me through the various issues of starting a band and a record label.Ann has actively advocated for women's issues throughout her career, particularly to expand women's opportunities in Corporate America. A graduate of Yale University and Columbia Law School, she is now a partner at the global law firm DLA Piper, where she maintains a full, corporate-law practice while also being actively involved with the Women's Initiative Program at the firm. The mother of two young children, Ann envisioned Pink51 while searching for retailers that combined quality products with a commitment to promoting women. The idea was to identify and champion corporations either owned by women or where women are substantively involved in the management of the company. By channeling a percentage of its proceeds to charities committed to the economic empowerment of women, Pink51 combines Ann's passions for women's advancement in the workplace and philanthropy. Ann is an avid traveler (with a particular fondness for Paris and Rome) and amateur chef. Wednesday, April 13, 2011 Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas Mark Ridley-Thomas has represented the nearly 2.3 million people of the Second District on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors since December 2008. During his first year in office, he shepherded through an agreement with the University of California to provide medical services at the new Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital, scheduled to open in late 2012. He also persuaded the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to fund a light rail system from Crenshaw Boulevard to Los Angeles International Airport and move up the opening from 2029 to as early as 2016. Together, the hospital and rail projects will generate more than $2 billion in spending and create over 16,000 jobs. Ridley-Thomas is the first African American man ever to serve on the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors. His district includes Carson, Compton, Culver City, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood and Lynwood, portions or all of 10 Los Angeles City Council Districts and the unincorporated communities of Alondra Park, Athens, Del Aire, Dominguez, East Compton, El Camino Village, Florence, Ladera Heights, Lennox, View Park, West Athens, West Carson, West Compton, Willowbrook and Wiseburn. Prior to his election to the Board, Supervisor Ridley-Thomas served the 26th District in the California State Senate where he chaired the Committee on Business, Professions and Economic Development and its two subcommittees on Professional Sports and Entertainment, and The Economy, Workforce Preparation and Development. In addition to his chairmanship duties, Ridley-Thomas served on the Senate Appropriations, Energy, Utilities and Communications; and Health and Public Safety committees. In January 2008, he became Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus and led the Caucus in unprecedented levels of cooperation and collaboration with counterparts in the Latino, and Asian-Pacific Islander Legislative Caucuses. His legislative work addressed a broad range of issues with implications for economic and workforce development, health care, public safety, education, budget accountability, consumer protection and civic participation. Mark Ridley-Thomas was first elected to public office in 1991 and served with distinction on the Los Angeles City Council for nearly a dozen years and departed as Council President pro Tempore. He later served two terms in the California State Assembly, where he chaired the Assembly Democratic Caucus. He is widely regarded as the foremost advocate of neighborhood participation in government decision-making. By virtue of his founding the Empowerment Congress, arguably the region’s most successful experiment in neighborhood-based civic engagement, he is considered the founder of the Neighborhood Council movement. Ridley-Thomas’ political career was preceded by a decade of service as executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles, which followed a brief but successful five-year stint as a high school teacher. He is a graduate of Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles and earned a baccalaureate degree in Social Relations (minor in Government) and a master’s degree in Religious Studies (concentration in Christian Ethics) from Immaculate Heart College. Mr. Ridley-Thomas went on to receive his Ph.D. in Social Ethics and Policy Analysis from the University of Southern California. He is married to Avis Ridley-Thomas, director of the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office Dispute Resolution Center. They are the proud parents of twin sons, Sebastian and Sinclair, who graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta. Contact 866 Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration 500 W.
