Dirige Manuel Pinazo
This week's critter is one of the most intelligent animals in the ocean. Te whai rahi, the giant oceanic manta ray, has a brain to body mass ratio similar to our own and is one of the only fish that can recognise itself in the mirror. Te whai rahi are long-lived, slow to breed, and only give birth to a single pup every 2-5 years. This slow and steady approach means they struggle to recover from the impact of fishing and are now listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List.
A career in science communication wasn't exactly what our guest, Jasmine Corbett, expected when she grew up, but now she is the Media and Communications Manager at the Manta Trust living out her dream to help share their work with the world. In this episode of the Beyond Jaws podcast, co-hosts Andrew Lewin and Dave Ebert interview Jasmine Corbett, the Media and Communications Manager for the Manta Trust. Jasmine shares her unique journey into the field of science communication, highlighting her passion for underwater photography and marine biology. Jasmine grew up in a creative family, initially envisioning a career in traditional photography. However, after discovering scuba diving during a gap year in Thailand, she shifted her focus to marine and natural history photography. She pursued a degree in Marine and Natural History Photography at Falmouth University, where she learned to combine her artistic skills with a passion for marine conservation. Her career began with various roles in marine conservation, including working as a dive instructor and managing marine conservation projects in the Maldives. During her time in Baa Atoll, she had a transformative experience witnessing manta rays, which deepened her commitment to their conservation. Jasmine's connection with the Manta Trust began while working as a marine biologist for Reefscapers, where she collaborated with the Manta Trust on research projects. Her photography and videography skills caught the attention of the Manta Trust's founder, leading to her current role in media and communications. In this position, she is responsible for creating compelling visual content that raises awareness about manta ray conservation and engages the public. Throughout the episode, Jasmine emphasizes the importance of visual media in science communication, noting that it can transcend language and academic barriers. She discusses the challenges of conveying complex scientific information in an accessible way, particularly when addressing serious issues like the threats faced by manta rays. Jasmine's approach involves crafting narratives that include a beginning, middle, and end, focusing on the context, challenges, and solutions to inspire action and hope among audiences. Overall, Jasmine's career exemplifies the integration of creative passions with scientific communication, showcasing how visual storytelling can effectively promote conservation efforts and engage diverse audiences. Today's story is about a little seahorse that feels sad because he isn't like anyone else. He wants to be a turtle, an octopus or a Manta Ray and does not embrace who God made him to be. Below the waters of the deep blue Sea, lived Splash, a tiny seahorse. Early one morning, Splash glanced up to the waters above. It looked so pretty with the rays of the sun splashing and creating a rainbow of light below. He loved his home, but lately he had been a little unhappy. Hidden in the seagrass beds, he admired Ophelia, the octopus, one creature of the deep. He sighed. His heart felt sad. Why did he have to be so small? How he wished to be strong like Ophelia with her eight groovy arms, which she used to move rocks to build her den. To listen to the whole story, find a comfortable chair or cosy corner and enjoy! In Episode number 2, your host for Her Ocean Story is interviewing Jessica Pate; she is founder of the Florida Manta Project in collaboration with the Marine Megafauna Foundation as lead scientist and project manager. We will uncover what led Jessica Pate into the field of marine biology, how she overcame her initial anxiety while learning how to scuba dive, all the way until now creating a children's book titled "A Manta Ray's Journey". Hope you find a little bit of inspiration to learn more about giant manta rays from this episode and maybe even have the opportunity to donate or volunteer with the Marine Megafauna Foundation. On his private space station high above Earth, Professor Burkhead has begun conducting a ground-breaking social experiment. Each week, his “Unifier” pairs together two unlikely creatures and puts them in a room together where the two subjects (an accountant and a giant squid, one week; a porcupine and a ballerina the next, etc) talk, debate, get to know each other, and maybe learn something new about themselves in the process. Did you know that seaweed absorbs way more CO2 than rainforests, but unfortunately billions of tonnes are washing up on beaches in the Gulf of Mexico because of our changing climate. This week on The Biofriendly Podcast we take the plunge into a bizarre 'Roomba meets Pac-man' device designed to collect seaweed and sink it to the bottom of the ocean, and we are pleasantly surprised when a cast of famous characters turn up on this episode.
As summer draws to a close in the Northern Hemisphere, we are going to discuss two Vacation Nightmare cases in this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast. Australian woman Elly Warren travelled to Africa in 2016 for the trip of a lifetime. She had been scuba diving with marine biologists and had been swimming with Manta Rays. One night, towards the end of her vacation, she went to a bar in Tofo Beach, Mozambique for a few drinks and to catch up with friends. She indicated to the group that she was going to get a drink and she would be back to join them. When Elly didn't come back, her friends assumed she had gone back to their hostel. Elly's body was found the next morning, outside a public bathroom. Mozambique officials have given varying stories about how Elly died. Her family believes she was murdered and an investigation is ongoing to this day. Heather Mack and her mother Sheila had a contentious relationship. Police were called to their family home on average once a month. There were allegations of abuse and violence between the pair. In 2014, Sheila paid for herself and Heather to fly first class to Bali for a vacation. They checked into luxury hotels, but their relaxation didn't last long. Heather stole her mother's credit card and bought airplane tickets for her boyfriend Tommy to join them in Bali. When Tommy arrived in Bali, he fought with Sheila and their altercation turned deadly. Sheila was beaten to death and her body was stuffed in a suitcase. Heather and Tommy were arrested in connection with her murder and they were incarcerated in Indonesian prisons. Heather was pregnant at the time of the murder – she gave birth and her baby lived in the squalid jail cell with her for years. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the cases of murdered Australian woman Elly Warren and the case of suitcase murderer Heather Mack. **TIMESTAMP** If you'd like to skip straight to the crime content, please go to (11:18) Read our blogs for these cases - https://truecrimesocietyblog.com/2023/09/05/australian-woman-elly-warren-murdered-in-mozambique/ https://truecrimesocietyblog.com/2023/09/05/heather-mack-the-bali-suitcase-murder/ We are now on Patreon! Yasmin talks about artistic inspiration for everyone's favorite underwater art! Fin Pin Shop is officially the center of the universe at every trade show (Shark Con and DEMA to name a few) and of course they're in popular dive shops and ocean-themed gift shops from sea to shining sea! This isn't just a scuba diver wonderland of art and trinkets, Fin Pin is made and supported by Marine Biologists (like Yasmin and Jaclyn), conservationists and artists. They have a massive online and social media presence, donate to a MULTITUDE of wildlife and aquarium charities, plus use smart and sustainable packaging and materials! How does one dominate an industry with pins, stickers, and other fun goodies? Yasmin Greene walks me through the artistic process, hurdles and excitement of dominating what many would consider a niche business, and a crowded market. Yasmin runs Fin Pin along with her “partner-in-crime” Jaclyn (interview a few episodes back S3 Episode 11) They combined forces, producing a constant flow of ocean-themed fun (oh, and of course plenty of Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou themed merch to go around!) Probably my favorite part of the interview was her explaining their soft spot for the “underdog” species' (like the Batfish and Blobfish!) and even use a Mola Mola fish as their main logo. If you can turn the Batfish and Horshoe Crab into fun… I think you may have something there. This interview is sure to impress and entertain any ocean, marine or aquatic enthusiast. Yasmin has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Tampa in Marine Biology, a Master's degree from Drexel University in Environmental Science, and an MBA from Florida International University. She loves Manta Rays, cats, frog fish, and churning out puns. There is an effort to conserve the Mobulid (manta and devil rays) species (9-11 species) as most of the species are considered endangered. Purse seine nets and gill nets are the leading reason for the death of mobulids. But there is a new fishing gear hack that gives mobulids a better chance for survival if they are caught in purse seine nets. The device is called a manta grid and it could be used as a tool in the conservation tool belt for tuna fishing (or any other type of fishing) in the future. Other tools could consider pre-fishing adjustments that could give mobulid species a fighting chance at survival. We are going to discuss these tools and strategies in this episode.
