Ewa and Doug Tweedy, and Dr. Nancy M. Young, the Lillian Wells Professor of Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, come together to discuss bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Nancy served as the principal investigator for a clinical trial examining the use of MED-EL's cochlear implants in young children with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Ewa and Doug's daughter, Ella, was born deaf in both ears and enrolled in the trial at seven months. The procedure and device have demonstrated safety and efficacy in supporting the development of listening and spoken language skills, with some surprising results. The Tweedy family emphasizes the importance of therapy and parental engagement in achieving positive outcomes, noting that Ella is excelling in a mainstream school.  Nancy explains, "Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss is permanent hearing loss. It arises from the inner ear. So we're not talking about temporary hearing loss from, say, fluid in the ear after a routine ear infection. So it usually arises from the inner ear, sometimes from the nerve of hearing. And it's often present at birth in certain children, but it can also have a later onset after birth." Ewa elaborates, "So, at the hospital right after her birth, we had someone come in to perform the newborn hearing screening, and we had two of those done one day after the next, and she did not pass either one of those. So they tried to tell us it might possibly be the fluid in the ears. So we just remained hopeful. But then, after a couple of weeks, we got her retested, again, and she did not pass. And then we went in for what Dr. Young referred to as the ADR so that diagnostic testing could be done for children. And there we found out that she did have the bilateral, so both sides, profound sensorineural hearing loss. We were told she was completely deaf." Doug continues, "I've had some passing information about it previously. I definitely was not an expert, definitely had not done the level of investigation and reading that I've done at this point. It was at least a familiarity to me. Pamiętajmy o tym widząc kolejne reklamy suplementów.Nad wprowadzaniem na rynek nowych leków czuwają instytucje państwowe. W Polsce są to Urząd Rejestracji Produktów Leczniczych, Wyrobów Medycznych i Produktów Biobójczych oraz Naczelna Komisja Bioetyczna. Dodatkowe komisje bioetyczne można powoływać przy uniwersytetach, placówkach badawczych i izbach lekarskich.Działanie testowanej substancji leczniczej sprawdza się najpierw na sztucznie wyhodowanych komórkach, ale to za mało. Wszystkie leki są na jakimś etapie testowane na zwierzętach i na pacjentach, którzy wyrazili na to zgodę. – Dana cząsteczka może się inaczej zachowywać wewnątrz organizmu niż na zewnątrz, na liniach komórkowych – tłumaczy dr Bylina. Naukowcy starają się zwierzęta oszczędzać, np. testować kilka różnych substancji na tym samym osobniku. A badania na ludziach są dobrowolne (ochotnicy zgłaszają się do badań klinicznych, ważne: nigdy za to nie płacą) i zwykle podwójnie zaślepione. To znaczy, że pacjent nie wie, czy otrzymuje badany produkt, czy placebo, nie wie tego również lekarz. To zapewnia obiektywność wyników. Naukowcy starają się też, by grupy badawcze były zróżnicowane pod względem płci, wieku i chorób towarzyszących. To pozwala lepiej przetestować produkt i wyłapać ewentualne skutki uboczne na wcześniejszym etapie.W odcinku usłyszycie też, dlaczego kobiety w ciąży i małe dzieci mogą przyjmować tak mało leków, gdzie szukać informacji o badaniach klinicznych i jak zapewnić, by producent leku nie wpływał na wyniki badań. MED-EL's audio processors have low average monthly repair rates, but sometimes issues do arise. Last October, the Sound Sensation Music Festival took place in Vienna, Austria, with deaf and hard of hearing musicians from around the world participating in performances and workshops. Roy Smith, a 74-year-old local musician from Chapel Hill, represented the USA in the festival. In this episode, Shari Eberts sits down with Roy Smith and Johanna Boyer, a musicologist and research associate with MED-EL. Johanna has been with the company since 2012, focusing on music and cochlear implants, and is a leading researcher in the field. As a singer and user of a cochlear implant herself, Johanna brings a unique perspective to her work, and regularly performs and teaches music, as well as conducting work with choirs. Their conversation explored Roy's experiences with hearing loss and his journey to rediscover his love for music through his cochlear implants, as well as Johanna's research on music perception through CIs and the importance of music for people with hearing loss.
