Perfect Practice
EP117: Rewrite your money story so you can serve the world as your authentic self with Garrett Gunderson

Perfect Practice

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 29, 2022 59:04

Where do our relationship and understanding of money come from? How has it shaped who we are today and the decisions we make? How does our money mindset impact our practice and our business success? There are just some of the questions that my friend, Garrett Gunderson, and I discussed during our time together. If you're open to a radically new perspective on money and how you can use it to transform yourself personally, you're going to love this interview. Here's some of what we covered: What is money? Where does our money mindset come from? What shapes our relationship with money? How does money affect our relationships? What are other ways to measure success at home and in business aside from money? What are some of the biggest money mistakes small business owners/practitioners make? What inspired you to do standup? Where's a good place for us to invest our time and money? What's more valuable, time or money? What's some business advice you wish you'd gotten when you were just starting? For those of us with children, what are tools you can share with us to shape their money mindset towards abundance? What's a piece of advice that you wish you had taken?   Key Takeaways: [1:02] Sachin welcomes listeners to Perfect Practice. Sachin welcomes and introduces his friend, Garrett Gunderson.   [1:12] Garrett is profoundly intelligent and funny and in this episode, he takes a topic that many of us have challenges with and make it enlightening and entertaining. Sachin welcomes Garrett and introduces him. Garrett turned 44 on the day of this recording!   [3:47] Sachin shares Garrett's bio.   [6:12] Garrett tells about his Spiderman adventure with his two kids in his neighborhood.   [7:11] Garrett has an upcoming book that he has been working on for seven years. It is intended to take you on a journey of engagement to shape how we look at money and finance. Garrett believes it is time for a new conversation around money and this book will start it. The title of the new book is Money Unmasked.   [9:32] Money is a tool of efficiency. It is a snapshot that represents the value you've created up until this time. That could include luck. For most, it represents the energy that you've put out into the world because you've either served someone, solved a problem, or added value. It's not why you're valuable. It does not dictate what you are capable of doing. [10:04] Money doesn't reflect your potential nor determine your destiny but it's a way that we can tap into other people's abilities to be more efficiently connected to what we're doing.   [10:43] Garrett shares his thoughts about investing. We want our investments to grow, but what happens when it's more than we can handle? What if you buy too many pieces of real estate or get involved in too many cryptocurrencies? The less related we are to our investments, the more risk we invite of not being clear about how we deliver value.   [12:01] You connect to people in relationships without money being a determining factor. See each other for the moment that we are in, not for the things we have. We struggle because we think that our value is in our money. People pose that they have more than they do, which creates jealousy and envy.   [13:59] Don't connect your happiness to markets. Make investments in your skillset, and the best essence of your life. Investments can make you long-sighted or short-sighted. Everything in-between is where the joy and fulfillment come in. Garrett could buy real estate, but he only buys real estate that he can utilize. He uses his money intentionally. He never wants to retire.   [19:03] Garrett makes investments in himself as a human being for the connections he can have with other human beings because of that. He doesn't want to invest in mutual funds because he's not connected to them.   [20:24] Garrett asks questions to get to the best understanding of things. When people tell him “it's science,” he asks what studies they are citing and where the science comes from. Better questions lead to better relationships and better learning that doesn't come from the classroom. The classroom does not teach much about money. Garrett talks about the Series 65 test.   [22:47] No one is smarter than you in your soul purpose, in your values, in your abilities, in your passions, where you are at your best. Don't do what everyone else is doing. What everyone is doing hasn't led to sustainability, peace, and prosperity.   [23:35] Why Garrett is contrarian.   [24:45] Garrett tells how his views changed at age 18 when he went with a friend to teach English in South Korea. He found out that people are people, around the world. He learned about propaganda. He started asking different questions to start understanding what governments and financial institutions might do to control people.   [29:23] Garrett's views on money and finance developed when he began an internship selling insurance and mutual funds at age 19. He asked questions about the RRSP and learned about the downsides. He kept asking questions and then wrote Killing Sacred Cows about the nine financial myths people can't detect.   [32:23] We have four money personas. A lot of our money mindset comes from scarcity. Misers hold on to what they have. Conservatives accumulate for the future. Strivers earn more to have more status. High Rollers are addicted to opportunity. They all come from scarcity thinking that there's only so much to go around. It is consumer conditioning. It started with Edward Bernays.   [33:13] Edward Bernays is the father of modern consumerism, which is a zero-sum game and scarcity. Childhood trauma has an effect and if we don't address childhood trauma, we don't mature in our money mindset. Garrett talks about his latest book, Disrupting Sacred Cows.   [34:27] Money affects our relationships. Garrett uses his marriage as an example. Once he and his wife understood their money personas, in 2008, they have not had a financial fight since. In their first year of marriage, they fought about finance over anything else. When we don't understand the money factors that move us, we make bad decisions.   [36:02] Money affects our health. It's a chronic stressor. When we focus on money we are not present or at peace.   [37:09] When people say they cannot afford their healthcare, they mean they are not worthy of it. Ask how you can afford it. Break it down into price, cost, and value. Garrett elaborates. If people don't take care of their health now, they will spend far too much time in hospitals or decrepit. He uses the birth of his son, and a defect he had, as an example.   [40:15] Chapter 7 of Garrett's new book talks about reclaiming time. Time is not money. Energy is money. If you are overworked or depressed, you will be able to deliver less value in the marketplace. Time is a measurement. Garrett explains using time for your soul purpose.   [42:54] In 2006, Garrett lost a business partner, Les McGuire, in a plane crash. For the next four months, he worked more but got less done because he was exhausted, trying to do it all himself. Receive support from other people instead of trying to do everything on your own. People are always willing to help. Sachin offers a recipe for being rich. If we were simply content, most problems would be solved.   [46:13] Garrett reflects on the advice he received but didn't follow from Mike Sloan about ambition. He ended up doing things he didn't want to do and was busier than he wanted to be because he was too ambitious for money. He should have listened to him. His ambitious past behaviors have ramifications in his marriage today.   [48:25] Garrett suggests how we can teach our children about mindset. He is teaching his children about purpose, career, fulfillment, and leisure; things that usually get pushed aside because of money. His oldest son is filming it and making a production, called Schooled. To end each lesson there is a fun purposeful activity to add structure to the teaching.   [51:58] Instead of defaulting to telling your children, “We can't afford this,” ask, “Is it worth it?” Or say, “It's not a priority right now. If you guys want to be a part of it, we might match the earnings.” Words cast spells. A lot of people are under the spell of scarcity and consumption, so break the spell. Garrett has conversations about service to others with his children.   [53:41] Garrett gives his advice for closing out 2022 and moving into 2023. There are millions of problems in this world and they should begin at the end of your driveway, not in your home. Don't get caught up in an economy that's impossible to predict. Focus on yourself. on your self-care, and on how you can serve more people, consistent with who you are.   [55:25] Learn more about Garrett at GarrettGunderson.com. Take the Money Persona Quiz at GarrettGunderson.com/quiz to predict what your bad money behavior might be or look at how to get in a better spot with your qualities. He invites you to come to his comedy shows or buy his books.   [56:28] Sachin thanks Garrett for being on the podcast to share his insights with practitioners. Our money mindset gives us permission to invest in ourselves. Sachin thanks you for tuning in today.   Mentioned in this episode Perfect Practice Live MindShare365 Genius Network Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!, by Robert T. A rookie fly fisherman and Wall Street Journal #1 Bestseller. A public speaker who's delivered hundreds of keynotes, and a mediocre guitar player at home. But maybe the best way to know me is from a few notes my wife wrote: A man who can only drink tequila under supervision. A man who will stop at nothing to provide his wife food if she gets HANGRY — self-preservation really. A dad who was totally cool with letting his sons go anywhere with him, in any costume they may have on! (Yeah, a client offered my kids $100 to knock on every door in the neighborhood with the three of us sporting Spider-man costumes saying “the neighborhood is safe.” (My costume was too small, and more Moose Knuckle Man than Spider-man, but hey, that $100 spent the same.) A man who can't fix a toilet, but can help you become financially independent so you can hire someone else to do it for you. A man who supports his wife's meditation, even if she is just sleeping. A brother who bailed his sister out of jail, while almost going to jail himself in the process. A father who loves and adores his sons for exactly who they are. A son that loves his parents with all his heart. A man loyal to his family and friends, but most of all, his values. Time won't wait ~ get to it (from the inside out). Friday 9th 2022. Riches are inappropriate for the small-minded, and of what use is wealth to misers?(C) 4 What they deny themselves they collect for others, and others will live in luxury on their goods.(D) 5 If they are mean to themselves, to whom will they be generous? They will not enjoy their own riches. 6 No one is worse than those who are grudging to themselves; this is the repayment for their meanness. 7 If ever they do good, it is by mistake,[a] and in the end they reveal their meanness. 8 Misers are evil people; they turn away and disregard people.(E) 9 The eyes of the greedy are not satisfied with their share; greedy injustice withers the soul.(F) 10 Misers begrudge bread, and it is lacking at their tables.(G) 11 My child, treat yourself well, according to your means, and present worthy offerings to the Lord.(H) 12 Remember that death does not tarry, and the decree[b] of Hades has not been shown to you. 13 Do good to friends before you die, and reach out and give to them as much as you can. 14 Do not deprive yourself of a day's enjoyment; do not let your share of desired good pass by you.(I) 15 Will you not leave the fruit of your labors to another, and what you acquired by toil to be divided by lot?(J) 16 Give and take and indulge yourself, because in Hades one cannot look for luxury. 17 All living beings become old like a garment, for the decree[c] from of old is, “You must die!”(K) 18 Like abundant leaves on a spreading tree that sheds some and puts forth others, so are the generations of flesh and blood: one dies, and another is born.(L) 19 Every work decays and ceases to exist, and the one who made it will pass away with it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vikki-semple/message

How Money Works

On today's episode of How Money Works, Craig and Jennifer Moser break down the different personalities of spenders and how those traits could affect your retirement. YOLO spender Using the “You Only Live Once” philosophy, these spenders go overboard on lavish expenses and purchases. These tend to be people who didn't have much money and then inherited a bunch. They often feel guilty for getting so much money. Some want to give family members a lot of money or spend lavishly. But we always advise them to be careful and plan for the future. “Don't go buy the RV, the boat and then start getting a suntan machine,” said Craig.   Emotional spender Had a good day? Go out to eat. Had a bad day? Go out to eat. Stressed and tired? Go out to eat. “That's me. I'm the emotional spender,” said Craig. “Most people roll their eyes when we talk about budgeting, and I'm one of them.” But developing a budget is crucial to planning for retirement.   Savvy spender Savvy spenders, like Jennifer, tend to have a budget, evaluate every purchase, be frugal, only spend when needed, prioritize quality over quantity and spend on experiences instead of stuff.   The miser Misers believe any sort of spending, even when necessary, is stressful and guilt inducing. Their money decisions are often based out of fear that they won't have enough. They saved diligently but then are afraid to spend the money. Craig's father was an example of this. He experienced the Great Depression and has always been tight with money.   Get additional financial planning resources here: https://maestrowealth.com/    What we discuss on this show:  0:44 – YOLO spender 2:22 – Emotional spender 4:46 – Savvy spender 6:38 – The miser

One who has actually come to understand one's constitutional position as the eternal servitor of the Lord gives up all engagements save working in Krsna consciousness. As already explained, buddhi-yoga means transcendental loving service to the Lord. Such devotional service is the right course of action for the living entity. Only misers desire to enjoy the fruit of their own work just to be further entangled in material bondage. Except for work in Krsna consciousness, all activities are abominable because they continually bind the worker to the cycle of birth and death. One should therefore never desire to be the cause of work. Everything should be done in Krsna consciousness for the satisfaction of Krsna. Misers do not know how to utilize the assets of riches which they acquire by good fortune or by hard labor. One should spend all energies working in Krsna consciousness, and that will make one's life successful. Like the misers, unfortunate persons do not employ their human energy in the service of the Lord. Since time immemorial each living entity has accumulated the various reactions of his good and bad work, As such, he is continuously ignorant of his real constitutional position. One's ignorance can be removed by the instruction of the Bhagavad-gita which teaches one to surrender unto Lord Sri Krsna in all respects and become liberated from the chained victimization of action and reaction, birth after birth. Arjuna is therefore advised to act in Krsna consciousness, the purifying process of resultant action.

It's a special show to ring in the goofy holidays, featuring our interview with official Rankin/Bass historian Rick Goldschmidt! You know Rankin/Bass. It's the legendary animation studio that produced all those classic holiday shows, starting with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1964. Lots more wonderful cartoons followed, including Santa Claus is Comin' To Town (which gave us Burgermeister Meisterburger), The Year Without a Santa Claus (which gave us the Heat Miser and Snow Miser), 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (that's the one with the mice and the clocks), and yes, Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey. Beyond the holiday specials, Rankin/Bass was also responsible for Mad Monster Party, The Hobbit, The Last Unicorn, ThunderCats, and so much more. Rick's first book, The Enchanted World of Rankin/Bass, is an invaluable resource for nerds like us, and his latest book celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Frosty the Snowman. Here on the Flopcast, Rick discusses the amazing talents behind the scenes at Rankin/Bass, many of whom he knew and worked with, including: character designers (and Mad magazine artists) Jack Davis and Paul Coker, Jr.; voice actors Paul Soles (Hermey the elf!), Bradley Bolke (Jangle the elf!), and Larry Storch (come on, LARRY STORCH!); composer Maury Laws; writer Romeo Muller; and the guys who started it all, Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass. Also discussed: Rick's experience as a guest this year at DragonCon, his picks for a couple of lesser-known Rankin/Bass projects we should all see, and his appearance on the TV show Collector's Call with Lisa Welchel! (That's right, Blair from The Facts of Life. You know we needed details.) Also this week: A holiday concert (and a new holiday EP) from Boston alt-rock legends Letters to Cleo, Speedy Ortiz, Grant's Advent Calendar, and Marisa Tomei. Your Relationship with Money: Is it healthy or unhealthy

Random Thoughts with Nicole L. Turner

Ten signs you have an unhealthy relationship with money: You have a scarcity mindset – you constantly worry that there is never enough. Spending money pains you or makes you feel guilty. You spend money carelessly. You partake in frivolous spending. You have a lot of debt…credit card debt. You have money wounds – meaning that your issues with money started with your past – either in your childhood, early adulthood, or a traumatic event you experienced. Your aspirations – Your early experiences with money can also affect what you believe you’re capable of. Since you were denied your dreams as a child, you feel like your dreams are not something you can fulfill You have fears as it relates to money - fears of not having enough.  You feel like you have to spend money to enjoy yourself. You constantly overspend and make excuses for your bad money habits. You refuse to talk about money or when you do, you talk negatively about it.  Tips to improve your relationship with money. Don’t let money control you.  Debt is not normal, so stop saying things like debt is the American way Pay attention to your money. Know where your money is going.  Don’t blame it for your bad mood. Money is never the reason you’re in a bad mood. Don’t make spending money your therapy.  Recognize the difference between want and need. We often use the word “need” for a want. Recognize what type of money person you are: Spenders Do you frequently make purchases that are beyond your means? Do you purchase things to make yourself happy? Is there a connection between shopping and your mood? If so, then you can consider yourself a spender. Spenders have a tendency to accumulate credit card debt because shopping to them is an addiction. Spenders spend money in hopes that material items will bring happiness or provide pain relief. Misers On the other end of the spectrum are the misers. Misers absolutely fear poverty and constantly worry about not having enough money to live. Misers need to feel in control and are generally uncomfortable with any sort of uncertainty. Ironically, misers fear poverty yet they practically live in it because they spend so little. Haters Money haters absolutely detest money and what it does to people. They eschew wealth and will often live in deprived and desolate conditions. They will purposely avoid material possessions whenever possible. Seekers Money seekers are the ones who obsess over becoming wealthy These people put a premium on making a fortune with the belief that it will solve all of their problems. In reality, there are usually other inadequacies in their lives that they are trying to make up for with material wealth. Identify your money story – We all have a money story. You just might not know how it started. Much of how we interact, manage and talk about money stems from lessons we learned (intentional and unintentional) as a child.  Set your money goals. Take the time to identify your goals — and get very specific. Ignore the Joneses – "Don't compare yourself to others. Forgive yourself. you need to forgive yourself for past & current money mistakes.  Article: 31 Dumb Things That Are Keeping You From Becoming Wealthy https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/personalfinance/31-dumb-things-that-are-keeping-you-from-becoming-wealthy

In Buddhism, generosity is defined as the virtue of a generous attitude and any physical and verbal actions motivated by this intention. Thus, generosity is fundamentally a state of mind. Our goal would be to completely condition our mind to giving. It is conditioning our mind to wish to be the gift, the blessing, the miracle for other living beings. The practice of generosity entails generating, in various ways, the intention to give and steadily increasing this generosity, even though you may not be actually giving something away to others.  Buddha once said, “If beings knew, as I know, the results of giving, they would not eat without having given, nor would the stain of selfishness overcome their minds. Even if it were their last bite, their last mouthful, they would not eat without having shared”. There are many ways to practice generosity—by giving material things, spiritual teachings or care for the sick, saving the bugs or animals in danger and giving love. In an era in which we are always advertised to, spurring our attachment and over-consumption, generosity is a much-needed practice. Giving our material possessions helps to diminish attachment and craving, which increases our peace and good fortune. In general, there are Four Ways to Give:   -Materially -Dharma -Fearlessness (saving living beings from harm or caring for the sick) -Love Fools don’t praise generosity;  Misers don’t go to the world of gods.  The wise rejoice in generosity  And so find happiness in the hereafter. This week we are looking at false narratives that surround earthly possessions. Much of the consumerism of our day centers on the false idea that our purchases say something about us and will bring us lasting security. Nearly every product is advertised as bringing security, power, success and happiness. Strong childhood experiences can press these narratives into our minds. In The Good and Beautiful Life, (p. 156) the author tells the story of how Suze Orman, the famous financial advisor, saw her father's business burn down when she was a little girl. Her father rushed into the building risking life and limb and rescued a cash register, burning his hands in the process. Suze thought saving money must be very important and set out to follow her father's example. Kingdom people learn that real security comes from the Lord. We are safe in his hands. Misers and spendthrifts both have a problem with avarice - the excessive desire for money and material possessions. They believe that their possessions are needed because they make a statement about their personal value and they protect them from the uncertain future. We know both beliefs are false. All the money in the world cannot protect us from tragedy and the richest people in the world are often the most bereft personally. Jesus uses three metaphors to warn us about these false narratives. We learn from his teaching that we should store up treasures in heaven, make sure we have a generous heart and be wary of the power of money to enslave us. Questions for Discussion: 1. Slide 2-3. In your own words, describe the reason our culture is so caught up in material possessions. Is this different from previous generations? Why or Why not? 2. Slide 4. What is the Kingdom narrative that contradicts materialism? 3. Slide 9-10. How might we store up treasures in heaven? How can you tell your heart is following your heavenly treasure? 4. Slide 11-12. Discuss the tough questions like: How much is enough? and Why do I really need that new car? How do we decide such questions 5. Slide 13. Why is it better to be God's slave rather than money's slave? 6. What soul exercise would you recommend to help with our struggle against avarice and to make sure we keep a Kingdom perspective?
