When discussing the measurement of sexual- and gender-based violence (SGBV) prevention in humanitarian settings, reactions often polarize around two main arguments: that measurement is impossible (“How can we measure what hasn't happened?”), or that prevalence alone signals success (“Do you have data showing decreased perpetration?”). Both perspectives overlook the complexity of SGBV prevention – and the valuable insights gained from measuring it through alternative approaches. In this post, Zuleyka Piniella, ICRC's Global Coordinator for the Prevention of Sexual Violence Programme, and Jessica Lenz, Senior Protection Advisor for InterAction, explore new ways to capture the nuanced impacts of prevention efforts, moving beyond prevalence data to understand what truly drives change.

Many think the gap between the global north and south, particularly over climate financing, will be the dominant issue at this COP.To look ahead to what exactly we might expect on this edition of The Agenda, Juliet Mann is joined by Nigar Arpadarai, UN Climate Change High-level Champion, Niklas Hagelberg, Global Coordinator for Climate Change at the UN Environmental Programme and Wu Changhua, Chair of the Governing Council of the Asia Pacific Water Forum.

Both India and Ukraine suffered from artificial famines imposed on them by British and Russian colonial authorities, respectively. In both cases, colonialists who committed mass crimes against the indigenous populations were considered “heroes” in their imperial metropoles. Yet there were also differences in how the relations between the colonial master and the colonized were organized. It is time to analyze both the similarities and differences of these cases and to map a more comprehensive picture of the imperialisms and colonialisms of the past and present. The Explaining Ukraine podcast invites you to a conversation at the PEN Ukraine / UkraineWorld event “Learning more about each other: Indian authors in Ukraine.” The conversation took place in Kyiv, at PEN Ukraine's headquarters, on April 17th, 2024. CGIAR SEMINAR SERIES Famines and Fragility: Making humanitarian, developmental, and peacebuilding responses work Co-organized by IFPRI, CGIAR, and Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) 14:30 TO 16:15 CET JUN 11, 2024 - 9:30 TO 11:15AM EDT Globally, the number of people facing crisis-level or worse acute food insecurity has more than doubled since 2017. The 2024 Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC), which informs the Global Network Against Food Crises on where humanitarian and developmental assistance is most needed, reported 282 million people in 59 food crisis countries faced crisis-levels of acute food insecurity and more than 700,000 people suffered famine in 2023. These numbers have increased with the crises in Gaza, Sudan, and Haiti. Conflict and fragility are major drivers of food crises, often compounded by weather extremes and economic shocks. Sound understanding of these drivers and of the structural factors underlying fragility is needed for timely and appropriate crisis responses and for preventative action. However, no one size fits all. Food crisis conditions and drivers vary greatly across countries, and crisis responders continue to face challenges to effective action along the humanitarian-development-peacebuilding (HDP) nexus. As the sixth policy seminar in the CGIAR series on Strengthening Food Systems Resilience, this seminar will take stock of what we know about key drivers of protracted food crises and persistent fragility and about the obstacles to successful HDP action. Speakers will discuss: recent trends in acute food insecurity and their causes; the severity and dynamics of acute malnutrition in rapidly developing food crises, with a focus on new methods of collecting evidence; building resilience to economic shocks in fragile, conflict-affected food crisis countries; and ways to adapt humanitarian assistance, social protection, and livelihood rebuilding programs for fragile contexts with vast numbers of displaced people. Opening Remarks Johan Swinnen, Director General, IFPRI and Managing Director, Systems Transformation Science Group, CGIAR Hendrik Denker, Deputy Head of Division 123, Food and Nutrition Security, German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Panel I - Protracted Food Crises: How to break the vicious circle of conflict, climate shocks and economic crises? IFPRI-AMIS SEMINAR SERIES Facilitating Anticipatory Action with Improved Early Warning Guidance Co-organized by IFPRI and Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) SEP 26, 2023 - 9:00 TO 10:30AM EDT Worldwide, the number of people facing crisis-level or worse acute food insecurity has more than doubled since 2017. The 2023 Mid-Year Update of the Global Report on Food Crisis (GRFC) signals 238 million people in 48 countries with recent, comparable data are facing high levels of acute food insecurity, an increase by 10 percent from 2022. The GRFC provides trends and projections of food crises and informs the Global Network Against Food Crisis on where humanitarian and developmental assistance is most needed. These new acute food insecurity numbers come at a time of ongoing uncertainty in global food markets amidst the repercussions of the war in Ukraine, fears for a strong El Niño phenomenon and other potential shocks. Most food crises grow out of compounding causes such as conflict, adverse weather shocks fueled by climate change, and economic shocks. A good understanding of these causes can facilitate the development of sound crisis response plans and anticipatory action to help mitigate a looming crisis and build food systems resilience. Calls have grown for preemptive or anticipatory action to mitigate impacts, reduce recovery costs, and strengthen social, economic, and environmental resilience to shocks, but resources for humanitarian responses still remain significantly larger than those for preventive development action. This seminar will take stock of existing early warning, early action systems (EWEAs) and examine whether they provide sufficient guidance to policymakers and decisionmakers keen to enhance anticipatory action and is featured under the IFPRI-AMIS policy seminar series on Making Sense of Food and Agricultural Markets. Opening Remarks Johan Swinnen, Managing Director, Systems Transformation, CGIAR; Director General, IFPRI Global Food Crisis: Where do we Stand and How is the GRFC Servicing Early Warning Systems? Minister Twyford is currently New Zealand's Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control and State Minister for Trade and Export, and Alyn is PNND's Global Coordinator. In our chat with Minister Twyford and Alyn, we covered topics from their backgrounds to current state of international affairs and the disarmament movement. The most intriguing part of our chat, however, was the portion on Outer Space. In the context of today's global challenges, we discussed the difficulties and challenges outlined in the disarmament handbook, Assuring Our Common Future, and more, but the bulk of our discussion rested on New Zealand's own policies related to outer space; New Zealand has two primary policies, which Minister Twyford helped push forward: the 2017 Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Act and the 2019 Space Launch Guidelines, both of which aim to be in line with the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. This podcast has been in support of the upcoming webinar “Ensuring that outer space remains a common good”, which takes place on September 29th, 2022. There will be two sessions: one at 7am CET for participants from the Indo-Pacific and Middle-East Regions, and one at 1pm CET for participants from Europe, Africa, and the Americas. This webinar is in support of the disarmament handbook “Assuring Our Common Future”, which can be found at disarmamenthandbook.org. Welcome back for our season 1 finale, ‘Still in My Backyard' As we've underlined throughout season 1, the exclusion of BIPOC voices in mainstream narratives on both the climate and plastic pollution crisis has majorly hindered efforts to build a more just and equitable world. For many of us, when it comes to multi-layered issues linked to environmental racism, it's difficult to grasp what this actually means in the day-to-day. For instance, imagine learning that petrochemical pollution is hindering your ability to start a family. Imagine if your city was used as a literal dumping ground for foreign trash. Imagine living with the daily anxiety of watching your kids grow up near a river you loved as a child, one that's now choked with plastic pollution. In ‘Still in My Backyard', our host Shilpi Chhotray gets personal with three incredible leaders from different parts of the world who spend a lot of time on the intersections of plastic, climate, health, and environmental justice. Our guests include: Von Hernandez, the Global Coordinator for the Break Free From Plastic movement based in Manila, Philippines. A Goldman Environmental Prize awardee, Von is one of Asia's leading environmental activists and made history in 1999 when he helped make the Philippines the first country to ban waste incineration. You'll also hear from Yvette Arellano from Houston, Texas. Yvette is a foremost environmental justice campaigner addressing the impacts of petrochemical production. After decades of working with communities on-the-ground, they recently founded Fenceline Watch which is dedicated to ending the multigenerational harm of communities living on the fenceline of industry. And last but not least, Tiza Mafira from Jakarta, Indonesia. An environmental lawyer by profession, Tiza works to mobilize governments and industries to ban the plastic bag throughout Indonesian supermarkets. Her organization Plastic Bag Diet Movement (IDDKP), is pushing for a nationwide ban on plastic bags. Von, Yvette, and Tiza are featured in the Emmy-award winning documentary: The Story Of Plastic. Episode 247: Engaging Marginalized Groups is Essential to Achieving Universal Health Coverage

Too often, many in my community are excluded from sexual and reproductive health services, said Ruth Morgan Thomas, co-founder and Global Coordinator of the Global Network of Sex Work Projects, in today's episode of Friday Podcasts. This episode features highlights from a recent Wilson Center and UNFPA event where Thomas and Zandile Simelane, an HIV Youth Advocate from Eswatini, address the barriers that their respective communities—sex workers and HIV positive youth—face in accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and universal health coverage (UHC).  Leaving marginalized individuals out of conversations about SRH and UHC heightens the chance that social protections will not fully accommodate their health needs. For individuals engaged in sex work, access to SRH services is an occupational health issue, said Thomas. “It isn't just sexual and reproductive health. It's actually about our work and keeping us safe in our work.” Nevertheless, because many governments do not formally recognize sex work, it is excluded from typical social protections, she said.  This lack of protection is compounded by the active criminalization of marginalized groups, including sex workers, LGBTQ+ individuals, and individuals who inject drugs, said Thomas. Criminalization “underpins and exacerbates” the stigma and discrimination that these groups already face, creating barriers that prevent them from accessing other essential health services. The impacts of criminalization are especially damaging because those causing harm – including governments, law enforcement, and health care providers – are often the very individuals and institutions tasked with protecting and caring for marginalized communities, she said.  Adolescents and young people are another key population often left out of conversations about SRH and UHC. Due to cultural norms and individual morals surrounding sexuality, providers are often not welcoming of young people seeking SRH care and may even scold them for engaging in sexual activity, said Simelane. This treatment discourages youth from seeking needed services. As a young Swazi woman, you are treated as a child, even at the health center, she said.  Family planning terminology and the vastness of services under the family planning umbrella can also create barriers for young people. Family planning translates differently to a 16-year-old who isn't planning for a family and who might need information on HIV testing, but doesn't know where to access that information, said Simelane. This confusion and lack of youth directed services often “filters” young people out and results in them not seeking needed care, she said.  Social media is a powerful tool to include communities directly in service planning and provision. “Ten years ago, when I tested positive, it dawned upon me that young people are actually on social media,” trying to engage with each other, said Simelane. “So why not bring the information that they need to them on these social media streets?”  Nevertheless, there are huge disparities in access to digital services, particularly for marginalized groups, said Thomas. COVID-19 is exacerbating the effects of this digital divide. Because of this, social media efforts must be paired with on-the-ground work, she said. Whether it's in the digital or physical space, marginalized and criminalized communities worldwide need to be part of our health response, including sexual and reproductive health, to make universal health coverage a reality, she said.

Kai Hermsen is the Global Coordinator for the Charter of Trust with Siemens, where together with his team in the Central Cybersecurity department, he ensures internal implementation of the Charter of Trust and is driving Siemens external Cybersecurity engagements with Charter of Trust partners and stakeholders like the World Economic Forum. Contact Kai: Twitter: @HermsenKai LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kaihermsen Contact Avrohom: Web: https://asktheceo.biz Facebook: AvrohomGottheil Twitter: @avrohomg Instagram: @avrohomg INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS: [00:41] Can you briefly summarize what is the Charter of Trust and where is it being used today? [01:04] The Charter of Trust was founded as an initiative among companies that wanted to make an impact in the world of cybersecurity. [01:49] Get away from the siloed mentality and work together to solve problems. [02:33] 2020 has seen headlines dominated by cybersecurity. We’ve had data breaches in all sectors, by prominent brands, such as Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, Honda, Zoom, Marriott, and so on. What’s worse is that hackers are shutting down hospitals with debilitating ransomware! The thing is, that many data breaches are caused, not by ineffective firewalls or cybersecurity protocols, but through human weaknesses that were exploited via social engineering activities, such as phishing. And before anyone passes judgment on the people that fall for these tricks, I myself have seen many of these emails, and they look pretty convincing. How can businesses better protect their consumers, and themselves, from these types of attacks? [04:01] 2020 has taught us two important lessons in cybersecurity: (a) Cyber threats are real, and if you don’t protect yourself, you’re putting yourself at risk. (b) What happens online has an impact on the real world. [04:37] Humans are the weakest link in cybersecurity. How can we turn that around and make it into a strength? [04:59] Just like humans are the weakest link in cybersecurity, they’re also your front-line protection. [05:13] Cyber security has the power to safeguard our digital business models and make them sustainable. [08:16] Identity theft has become a business, and that’s why cyber literacy is so important. [09:07] Let’s look at the same challenge from the perspective of the consumer. According to a market analysis by Digital Commerce 360, US eCommerce sales in Q3 of 2020 was 37.1% higher than the same period in the previous year. This shows that people are doing more online digital transactions than ever before. This type of activity requires a massive amount of trust. Unfortunately, you can’t trust everyone, and even the most trustworthy companies are vulnerable to phishing attacks like we discussed earlier. What kind of protection can we put in place to be able to sustain this kind of growth? [11:45] Trust is not just about security. It’s principled behavior in all of digital. [14:00] What protections are there for consumers to shop online and be protected from identity theft? [16:42] Self-sovereign identities give the consumer the power to grant identities when they go online. It’s like having a virtual identity. [18:34] What do you think is the next step for Siemens regarding the Charter of Trust? [20:59] How can people connect with you? Kai: The best way to reach me is via LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/kaihermsen/. I’m also available on Twitter at @HermsenKai. [21:33] Do you have any parting words of wisdom to share with the audience? [21:39] The virtual world and the real world are completely interchangeable. Elly Oliveira, Global Coordinator for Samaritan Strategies, and her husband Cleiton share how people learn by experiencing something new, especially concerning proclamation vs demonstration of the gospel. Cleiton says, "The demonstration of God's love to a broken world is a message we communicate without words. When we talk about proclamation and demonstration, we remember the story of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding. We have no record that Jesus preached a sermon in that occasion. However, the Lord was recognized as one to be obeyed." Elly speaks about how Samaritan Strategies helps people transition, having a paradigm shift, from a culture that keeps them inactive, to a culture where they are the hands and feet of Jesus in their community. Elly says that people "learn how to demonstrate God's love with their families, and be a leading letter that can be read by the world." Elly shares several examples, "What we actually do is facilitate situations where the Holy Spirit works on people's hearts and they turn their lives to Jesus Christ."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Pox Lover: An Activist's Decade in New York and Paris (University of Wisconsin Press)www.thepoxlover.com The Pox Lover is a personal history of the turbulent 1990s in New York City and Paris by a pioneering American AIDS journalist, lesbian activist, and daughter of French-Haitian elites. In an account that is by turns searing, hectic, and funny, Anne-christine d'Adesky remembers "the poxed generation" of AIDS—their lives, their battles, and their determination to find love and make art in the heartbreaking years before lifesaving protease drugs arrived.D'Adesky takes us through a fast-changing East Village: squatter protests and civil disobedience lead to all-night drag and art-dance parties, the fun-loving Lesbian Avengers organize dyke marches, and the protest group ACT UP stages public funerals. Traveling as a journalist to Paris, an insomniac d'Adesky trolls the Seine, encountering waves of exiles fleeing violence in the Balkans, Haiti, and Rwanda. As the last of the French Nazis stand trial and the new National Front rises in the polls, d'Adesky digs into her aristocratic family's roots in Vichy France and colonial Haiti. This is a testament with a message for every generation: grab at life and love, connect with others, fight for justice, keep despair at bay, and remember. Praise for The Pox Lover  “Reminiscent of the luscious lesbian literature of the Parisian past, but propelled into the era of AIDS, ACT UP, and the Lesbian Avengers. D'Adesky's memoir also reveals her family's role in French colonialism, raising compelling questions about privilege, survival, homophobia, and dislocation.”—Sarah Schulman, author of The Cosmopolitans “A haunting contribution to the record of the AIDS era.”—Laura Flanders, author of Bushwomen: Tales of a Cynical Species “A necessary book. We need such a chronicle.”—Felice Picano, author of Like People in History “In a voice both powerful and cool, The Pox Lover takes on a sprawling personal history, deeply aware throughout that it is the politics of anyone's day—and how we respond to it—that shapes a life. Never far from the mad joy of writing, loving, and being alive, even as it investigates our horribly mundane capacity for horror, this book is a masterpiece.”—Michelle Tea, author of Black Wave Anne-christine d'Adesky is an investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker who reported on the global AIDS epidemic for New York Native, OUT, The Nation, and The Village Voice.
