When Wham! Went To China

George Michael and Andew Ridgely, aka British duo Wham!, became the first Western group to play a gig in Communist China on 7th April, 1985. The event, staged at the People's Gymnasium in Beijing, was primarily a strategic move aimed at breaking the band in the United States; the brainchild of the band's managers, Gordon Jazz Summer and Simon Napier Bell, who embarked on a series of hotel lunches with Chinese officials, gradually unveiling the proposal for Wham!'s performance. The logistical challenges were immense - requiring a jumbo jet solely dedicated to transporting equipment for the concert, and securing funding for an accompanying film from CBS. In this episode, The Retrospectors consider how the atmosphere was tempered by police presence and cultural sensitivities; reveal just why it was that the audience knew all the songs, even though they'd never heard of the band when they'd purchased their tickets; and discover how NOT to get a clap-along going during ‘Club Tropicana'... Brian Harnetty's recent record, Words and Silences, takes voice recordings made by the famed American Trappist monk Thomas Merton and sets them within Harnetty's musical compositions. The meditative and revealing result has been lauded by critics in The Wire, MOJO, and Aquarium Drunkard.  In this episode, we share a Phantom Power exclusive: a brand new narrative piece that Brian created about the making of his record. “Words and Silences: The Thomas Merton Hermitage Tapes” is much more than a behind-the-scenes look at Brian's process. Harnetty's audio diary is its own moving meditation on Merton, solitude, sound, media, and the self.  This is the second piece that Brian has shared with Phantom Power–you may remember his Forest Listening Rooms episode. Like that episode, this is something special. We highly recommend taking a walk in the woods or finding a quiet space to listen to this beautiful meditation. And after we listen, Mack talks to Brian about what we've heard.  (And, of course, we'll have a longer version of the interview and our What's Good segment for our Patrons.) Who was Thomas Merton? Thomas Merton was an author, mystic, poet, and comparative religion scholar who lived from 1915 to 1968. It's hard to imagine a spiritual superstar quite like Merton appearing in America today. His first book, 1948's “The Seven Storey Mountain,” became a best-seller and led to a flood of young men applying to join Catholic monasteries.  Merton had a major influence on spaces such as the progressive Catholic church Mack grew up going to. He was outward facing, committed to leftist causes, and fascinated by other religions, but at the same time, he retreated from his fame into his hermitage in KY. In The New Yorker, Alan Jacobs called him “perhaps the proper patron saint of our information-saturated age, of we who live and move and have our being in social media, and then, desperate for peace and rest, withdraw into privacy and silence, only to return.” Brian Harnetty Brian Harnetty is an interdisciplinary sound artist who uses listening to foster social change. He is known for his recording projects with archives, socially engaged sound works, sound and video installations, live performances, and writings. His interdisciplinary approach has been compared to “working like a novelist…breathing new life into old chunks of sound by radically recontextualizing them” (Clive Bell, The Wire). Brian is currently a Faculty Fellow at Ohio State University's Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Theme (2022-23), Harnetty is a two-time recipient of the MAP Fund Grant (2021, 2020), and received the A Blade of Grass Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art in Contemplative Practices (2018) and the Creative Capital Performing Arts Award (2016). REM - Yet another band influenced by The Velvet Underground

REM are often viewed by casual listeners as a lighter-style rock band.  This is deceptive, with the band offering complex songs with obscure lyrics, brilliant playing, covers, and an incredible refusal to compromise.  The boys talk through REM's development from their rock cliche start – the singer, Michael Stipe, met guitarist Peter Buck in the record shop where Buck worked - to their becoming one of the biggest-ever bands in the world – all without selling out.   MOJO Magazine called them an ensemble growl adorned with heavenly harmonies  which describes perfectly how their beautiful melodies, with disaffected, jaded lyrics, were influenced by The Velvet Underground. In turn they influenced such key bands as Nirvana and Pavement, as well as Radiohead, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, The Pixies and The Smiths.  Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” is 1971's “Aqualung” by Jethro Tull.  It's a special album of contrast full of brave variations – from gentle acoustic breaks to Martin Barre's power chords and Ian Anderson's tough vocals.  The Dickensian quality of many of the lyrics challenges organised religion. Mick & Jeff both have great memories of this album, including the night that Jeff's keyboard player from his band, Ocean, blew the crowd away with the piano intro lifted from “Locomotive Breath” during a show south of Sydney.   We look at The Stones' new album, “Hackney Diamonds”, their first in 18 years. Jeff thinks it's pretty good, but Mick still keeps comparing every new Stones record to “Exiles on Main Street”.  Jeff brings some bad news.  The Bored Ape Yacht Club, famed distributor of NFTs (as credible as digital currency!) has gone belly-up, driving another nail into the digital con artist industry. References:  Rolling Stones, ‘Hackney Diamonds', ‘Angry', ‘A Bigger Bang', Bored Ape Yacht Club, “1001 Albums You Must Hear before You Die”, Robert Dimery, Jethro Tull, “Aqualung”, Martin Barre, Ian Anderson, “Locomotive Breath”, “Hymn 43”, REM, Athens Georgia, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe, Wuxtry Records, Patti Smith, Television, The Velvet Underground, Dr. William Dement, Mandolin, “Out of Time”, Hofner bass, "Monster”, “Lifes Rich Pageant”, “Document”, “Femme Fatale”, “Pale Blue Eyes”, "So. Today on KNOW GOOD MUSIC we talk with singer/songwriter : JESSE DANIEL EDWARDS We talk to Jesse while he is relaxing poolside about his new incredible album "VIOLENSIA", growing up in a small California town milking goats, his time as tour manager with Morrissey and some details on one of his new songs "What Ever Happened To" Jesse's voice is mesmerizing.  Think Morrissey meets Freddie Mercury meets Jeff Buckley!   ******** A little bit about JESSE DANIEL EDWARDS : Jesse Daniel Edwards is an alternative songwriter from the small mountain town of Cuyamaca, CA where he grew up without TV, internet, or significant exposure to the outside world. Leaving home at 16, he spent his late teens busking on street corners around the US and abroad. While singing outside of bars on Music Row in Nashville, TN, Jesse struck up a friendship with the late Al Bunetta (John Prine). Bunetta served as a mentor to the young artist, encouraging Jesse to write and tour full-time in the years to follow. After a sabbatical from touring, Jesse returned to the stage in 2021 with critically acclaimed Juni Ata - a collaborative project produced by Steve Cropper (Otis Redding, RCA), and arranger/co-producer Jacob Rosswog.  The resulting album "Saudade" charted successfully in the U.S. and abroad, while receiving significant airplay and garnering reviews in Mojo Magazine, American Songwriter, and the Associated Press. 2023 marks the vinyl re-release of 2012's "American Dreaming" (Cavity Search Records- Elliott Smith), and the summer release of piano rock opus "Violensia" (produced by Joe Chiccarelli- The Strokes, The Shins). ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.   Visit our YouTube Channel where you can video segments from some of our past interviews. What a delight to be joined by another huge talent - the Singer, Songwriter & Musician, Edgar Jones for this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast... Also known as Edgar 'Summertyme' Jones, his musical path began in the early 90s, as frontman and founder of Liverpool band The Stairs, championed by the likes of Elvis Costello and signed to Go! Discs, then also the home of future collaborators Paul Weller and The La's. His other bands include The Isrites, The Big Kids, Edgar Jones & The Joneses and Free Peace. His 2005 solo album Soothing Music For Stray Cats was released to critical acclaim with Noel Gallagher commenting "It bent my head, man. It's probably one of the best records I have ever heard" and Mojo Magazine labelling it "A stunning collection of rock'n'roll, jazz, R&B and doo wop". Edgar has also played and toured with artists including Ian McCulloch, Saint Etienne and Ocean Colour Scene and of course, our podcast subject - Paul Weller. Edgar joined the Weller band to play bass for the Heliocentric tour in 2000 - including a very special performance at London's Royal Albert Hall - which featured Steve White and Steve Cradock, along with Edgar on bass and Chris Holland on keyboards. Legendary arranger, Robert Kirby also conducted a stunning 16-piece string orchestra, which accompanied the band on most songs. The performance was released as a 90-minute filmed performance on DVD. Edgar was also part of the band for the Jools Holland Lennon Special and a recording for The Who Tribute album... The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, founder Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS playing Stockport – The Spinning Top on Friday 1st July 2022.                                                                                                                                                                 Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy with erstwhile South colleague, guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton, discovery singer/violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell.'Cool To Be Kind' was released in November 2020, on the independent label Nectar Records signalling the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound.Although born and bred in England, the band's sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar-heavy melody more associated with Seattle in the late 80's/early 90s.However, you can only sing about what you know."Although a lot of the songs have an Americana feel," says Dave "they're still about life in England. You'll feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low-down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire." Their debut album produced by cult producer Teo Miller captures truthful, open-hearted, funny and sometimes painfully honest songs, turning the page to a new chapter for Dave Hemingway and The Beautiful South story.'Cool To Be Kind' is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and Phil's worlds. It tells tales that cover contemporary themes and age-old matters of the heart and soul - all viewed through the bottom of a recently drained pint glass. "Now we're Sunbirds we're free to dig a little deeper into ourselves", says Phil "having said that, there's no exact science here, we're just enjoying ourselves and expressing whatever we want whether it's about love, longing, depression or Gary Lineker's crisp adverts". "Cool To Be Kind is a must-have album which helps us forget the pandemic and lust after the days where this amazing new band can deliver their songs live" - UK Music Reviews"A highpoint of its roomier rosterWe Are Cult"Appealingly understated songwriting" - Classic Pop Magazine"An album with warmth to spare" - MOJO Magazine                                  Sunbirds 'Cool To Be Kind' debut album is out now available on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon UK & Music, all HMV stores and via the website - www.sunbirds.co.uk See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Kathryn has released eleven full-length albums under her own name (and more with various side-projects) since her debut LP, Dog Leap Stairs, was released in 1999. A massive Paul Weller fan herself - Kathryn's songs have also been called out by Paul as favourites over the years - with him picking the song Heart Shaped Stone in his top ten 45s in Mojo Magazine earlier this year. Kathryn tells stories of sharing the stage with Paul, visiting Black Barn Studio and a very special upcoming collaboration too (with one of my favourite stories so far on this podcast) along with the story of her career, inspirations and techniques to create those beautiful, heart-felt, honest songs. Folk music owes its mainstream success to a few people, with one of the trailblazers being a singer-songwriter that has changed his name a few times. Let’s take a deep dive into the musical world of Cat Stevens… His real name is a bit longer and more interesting, Steven Demetre Georgiou. In 1977, he changed his name yet again to Yusuf Islam when he became a Muslim. In 1979, he auctioned off his guitars and gave the money to charity in an effort to show his devotion to Islam He tells Uncut magazine that his girlfriend at the time helped him pick his most famous stage name: Cat Stevens. “Christine said to me one day ‘you look so much like a cat.’ That kind of stuck.” In 1968, Stevens contracted Tuberculosis. After a long recovery, he started writing more introspective songs that lead him to his signature folk sound and message. "I was smoking a lot,” he tells Mojo Magazine. “Dope as well but mostly cigarettes. So then along came this disease and I was stuck with it. It was a kind of godsend in a way for me. That period was my blossoming into who I wanted to be." The late 60s and early 70s were Stevens’ heyday, hitting success with songs like Father and Son, Wild World, Moonshadow, Peace Train, and Morning Has Broken Not only can he sing and write, he can paint as well. His artwork graces the front of three of his albums In 2001, he released a boxed set containing 79 tracks, most of which he recorded before becoming a Muslim. He donated the proceeds to charity in light of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America Yusuf continues to perform today, mostly without any interest in commercial success, but instead for enlightenment and to assist his religion. He has released new albums occasionally and gone back on tour, only to donate some or most of the proceeds to charities

Here, finally, was proof that mod could mutate into a reflection of contemporary street culture and yet still retain its vital characteristics: confidence, defiance and an appreciation of a nice pair of shoes, all wrapped up in a cocksure bravado traceable all the way back to original ‘tacky herbert’ Jimmy Cooper. A booming Loaded magazine (run by Jam fans James Brown and Tim Southwell) happily ran fashion spreads of Liam-esque models in fishtail parkas and Hush Puppies and Oasis duly became the biggest band since The Beatles. Once again mod chic had officially became the nation’s leisurewear and outlook of choice. -- Mojo Magazine, 2004 In the early 90s American music ruled the airwaves internationally. Seattle had spawned the angrily apathetic punk-metal hybrid that was grunge, and the slacker sound had rolled right round the world. For every action there is a reaction. Britpop was that reaction. Blur front man Damon Albarn explained Britpop has a reaction to grunge's lack of style. The Britpop scene of 1994 - 1997 was a sort of stylistic second coming of the mod revival, this one based less on soul and R&B and more on the pure Britishness of being what was essentially a modern mod. Britpop bands brought back the importance of being British, and the music was so thoroughly British it never did manage an invasion of the US the way sixties British music had. Britpop was a cultural shift through and through. It had its own movies like Trainspotting and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. It had its own celebrity nightlcub The Blow Up.  Its own style, lad boys along with its own documentation of the style, lad mags. But above all it had its own music which dominated the world's music scene throughout the mid-90s. So, as part of my mod essentials series of modcasts I'm exploring the Britpop phenomenon. Previously I looked the sixties mods and then the mod revival of the late 70s and early 80s. And now it's time to turn to Britpop and the 90s. You can explore more as well. I had a lot of resources that I was able to crib from, using audio clips and borrowing quotes. There are some good movies about the Britpop era: The Britpop Story and Live Forever. There is a fantastic book that delves into the whole scene from the music to the culture to the politics: Britpop!: Cool Britannia And The Spectacular Demise Of English Rock by John Harris. Mojo magazine produced an entire Britpop special edition a few years back that includes interviews with about 20 of the artists and briefly tells the scene's story. Once you get into it you'll find, as I did, how amazing a time it really was. Be sure to head over to the modcast homepage at mistersuave.com for a full track list for this show.

Atomic Rooster - Night Living I thought it was high time I started featuring early prog and metal in addition to psych rock. Those genres were born from the experimentation of psychedelia, so it seemed like a logical extension of my psychedelic theme, and it gives me the opportunity to shake things up from time to time. With a name like Atomic Rooster, you might get the idea that this is a psychedelic rock band anyway, sort of like Strawberry Alarm Clock. Make no mistake, this Rooster was crowing to a different tune. Atomic Rooster, formed by Vincent Crane and Carl Palmer in 1969, was one of the premier English heavy metal/prog rock bands. Crane and Palmer had previously been members of The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, who had a huge hit in 1968 with Fire. That's Crane on the badass Hammond organ part in that song. Palmer didn't stick with Rooster for long, since he went off to drumming fame with Keith Emerson and Greg Lake in their little prog outfit, and was replaced by Paul Hammond. Crane added John Du Cann on guitar, as well, to deepen the band's guitar sound. I found this little gem of a song in a compilation in Mojo Magazine late last year, Heavy Nuggets, which has been lots of fun to explore. This Atomic Rooster cut was pulled from an anthology of lives, rares, and B-sides, Atomic Rooster: The First 10 Explosive Years. If you're not a huge prog fan, worry not. This song leans more toward the heavy metal sound. In fact, it reminds me of Deep Purple or of one of the songs from the Heavy Metal soundtrack, which hubby and I played ad nauseum on the car cassette player back in the day. I love the heavy-handed organ in the song, which, when accompanied by the sinister vocals, give this song that dark metal bent.
