Fontaines D.C. are in a real purple patch. Over the last few years, they've become one of the most compelling bands around, and their latest album Romance topped our list at Double J of the 50 Best Albums of 2024.Back in 2023, lead singer Grian joined Zan to Take 5. He doesn't do a whole lot of interviews, but he really embraced this one. Over €3 billion is brought in a year between Donegal and Cork due to the Wild Atlantic Way, the major tourist route established ten years ago, according to a new report published by Fáilte Ireland. Tugtar isteach os cionn €3 bhilliún sa bhliain idir Dún na nGall agus Corcaigh mar gheall ar Shlí an Atlantaigh Fhiáin, an mhórchonair turasóireachta a bunaíodh deich mbliana ó shin, de réir tuarascáil nua atá foilsithe ag Fáilte Éireann. That is said to be a 60% increase in tourism arrivals in the west of the country since 2014. Deirtear gur méadú 60 faoin gcéad é sin ar an teacht isteach ón turasóireacht in iarthar na tíre ó 2014. As well as the additional influx, says Fáilte Ireland, 35,000 new jobs have been created in the west over the course of those ten years as a result of the project's success so far. Chomh maith leis an teacht isteach breise, a deir Fáilte Éireann, cuireadh 35,000 post nua ar fáil san iarthar i gcaitheamh na ndeich mbliana sin de bharr chomh rathúil agus a bhí an tionscadal go dtí seo. The Wild Atlantic Way is 2,500 kilometers long and runs from Enniswein in Co. Donegal to Kinsale in Co. Áirítear cuid de na láithreáin oidhreachta is tábháchtaí sa tír feadh na slí – Grianán Ailigh, Achaidh Chéide, Dún Aonghasa agus an Blascaod Mór ina measc. The new report is being launched by Fáilte Ireland at the Meithal tourism 'fair' which is being held in Kilarne in Co Kerry today and tomorrow. Grian Chatten - "Fairlies" from the 2023 album Chaos for the Fly from Partisan Records This Friday, Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten will release his debut solo album, titled Chaos for the Fly, via Partisan. He says he knew from the start that he wanted to tackle these tracks on his own. “I just thought: I want to do this myself. I know where we as a band are going next and that's not where I want to go with this. I've got a couple of exaggerated aspects of my soul that I wanted to express,” he stated in a press release. “The rest of the band are all creative and songwriters in their own right, too. I didn't want to go to them and be like, ‘No, every single thing has to be like this.' I didn't want to compromise with these songs in that way.” He adds that today's Song of the Day was written "in intense heat," explaining, "Partly in Jerez, Spain, partly in LA a couple of days before a Fontaines D.C. tour kicked off. It was a quick write, and I believe I celebrated each line with a beer." "I write all day, every day. When I'm in the thick of it, it's a struggle to focus on anything else."For Grian Chatten of Fontaines D.C. , there's no such thing as a writing ritual if you never stop writing. He calls his writing process his "constant annoying companion. I have writing on speed dial 24/7." But Chatten says that he's always had a healthy relationship with writing because he's never forcing it. The key, he says, is to not take it too seriously or to make it appear to precious. "I treat it with as little importance as possible."
Grian A. Cutanda has a PhD in Social Education from the University of Granada (Spain) and a Degree in Psychology from the University of Valencia. He is an author of fiction and essay, with 16 books published, some of them translated into 12 languages, and a number of academic papers and chapters at the request of various universities. To highlight his international bestseller The Gardener, published in English by Thorsons (HarperCollins) in 1998. Social and environmental activist, Grian has been an organiser and coordinator in different fields within social movements such as the Indignados Movement in Spain, forerunner of the Occupy Movement in 2011; the People's Climate March in 2014 and the subsequent 2015 climate campaign in Edinburgh (Scotland); and Extinction Rebellion, as co-founder of XR Spain and regional liaison for Latin America in XR International. The impact of his environmental activism reached an international level with a documentary screened at the Royal Anthropological Institute Film Festival, The Earth Stories Collection, or How to End Modernism Once and for All (Cutanda, Kendall & Borecky, 2021) and when, in September 2021, he held a 33-day hunger strike as part of the Global Earth Fast campaign organised by Extinction Rebellion from the UK. This made him, along with Karen Killeen, the activist who held his hunger strike against climate change the longest in the world. Founder of the Avalon Project – Initiative for a Culture of Peace, Grian has been linked to the University of Granada as a researcher. His main research led to the creation of The Earth Stories Collection, a global bank of worldwide traditional stories capable to transmit an ecocentric and systemic worldview, illustrating the different principles and fragments of the Earth Charter. In this line, he is also working, with the partnership of the Earth Charter Secretariat at the United Nations' University for Peace and the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, on spreading these stories through the creation of a global network of storytelling activists, Earth Story Tellers. THE STONE HOUSE OF THE SUN THIS Donegal antiquity has been the quiet sentinel of Ireland, WITNESS to our shared history - FROM the Tuatha Dé Danann to midnight mass, its a long-time fan of our stuff. A temple for the sun god Baal, THE original home of the O'Neill Clan, the site of Niall of the Nine Hostages conversion to Christianity by Old Man Patrick and the eventual hideaway for Catholics in penal times. ARCHAEOLOGISTS also found a stone phallus there, for you stone-cold lovers out there. IT'S been watching us a while okay so maybe give IT a listen HUH!? Fontaines D.C.'s leader, Grian Chatten, joins LSQ to talk about the Irish post-punk band's newly announced third studio album, Skinty Fia, which is f*cking excellent, btw. (It's not out until April, but I was lucky enough to hear an advance, in preparation for the interview.) Of course we also delve into his formative creative experiences — from setting up a makeshift drum kit with boxes and pots and pans to recreate a drum fill in Bad Religion's “American Jesus” (“There was something so symmetrical about it — it reminded me of a dolphin jumping out of the water and creating an arc in the air…”) to memorizing poems in exchange for football cards (an inspired parenting idea from his dad), to playing in a group that actually won their local battle of the bands, to realizing during early gigs as a frontman that he felt an uncanny sense of calm while performing. Skinty Fia comes out April 22nd via Partisan Records and you can pre-save or pre-order it HERE.

It is a brand new year, and it has been several months since the last podcast. We are back now, better than ever before with WhiteFyr, SquareMario, Blondskunk, and AllOutJay on the podcast. We start things off with a teaser from the podcast that shocked many of us. We also officially start the podcast off with a talk about how our 2021 has been going, any goals, plans, and more. This leads to a long discussion on how Twitch Channel Points play a large role in streams but perhaps too large of a role in some cases. They also talk about the new AfterLife SMP member, KennyZope, and they talk about how AfterLife has been going. We also happen to announce the Streamathon that is happening on Feb. 27th! There was a fun podcast suggestion wondering which Hermitcraft member we would want on AfterLife. Would it be Grian, EthosLab, MumboJumbo, xisumavoid, TangoTek, BdoubleO100, or more? WhiteFyr also magically teleports, and then they talk about the art of content creation and more. #podcast #minecraft #hermitcraft Streamathon Schedule: http://live.afterlifesmp.com/ ►People on the podcast AllOutJay: http://tiny.cc/AllOutJay Blondskunk: http://tiny.cc/Blondskunk SquareMario: http://tiny.cc/SquareMario WhiteFyr: http://tiny.cc/WhiteFyr 00:00 Teaser Clip 00:16 Intro 01:31 How has 2021 been, changes, goals, future, etc 24:15 Twitch Channel Points 35:20 New member KennyZope & AfterLife Season 3 talk 44:58 Streamathon announcement 48:30 PS: Which Hermitcraft member would you want on AfterLife SMP? - Timm 1:04:30 PS: When was the last time you washed your cup? - Lamp 1:12:46 WhiteFyr teleports 1:13:28 Breaking the seal 1:14:30 What we focus on in content creation and dislike 1:32:05 What was your dream job as a kid 1:43:00 The wrap up Please leave a like if you do enjoy, comment down below your opinions on the podcast, comment any recommendations you have for us too, and don't forget to subscribe to everyone involved! ►AfterLife Podcast is available on the following: YouTube: http://tiny.cc/AfterLifePodcast Spotify: http://tiny.cc/AfterLifeSpotify Google Play Music/Podcasts: http://tiny.cc/AfterLifeGoogle Apple Podcasts: http://tiny.cc/AfterLifeApple Amazon Podcasts: http://tiny.cc/AfterLifeAmazon ►AfterLife SMP Members AllOutJay: http://tiny.cc/AllOutJay Blondskunk: http://tiny.cc/Blondskunk WhiteFyr: http://tiny.cc/WhiteFyr HughBone: http://tiny.cc/HughBone This_is_KB: http://tiny.cc/ThisIsKB RunicTitan: http://tiny.cc/RunicTitan KingZee: http://tiny.cc/KingZee SquareMario: http://tiny.cc/SquareMario Ash’s Den: http://tiny.cc/AshsDen Artorvian: http://tiny.cc/Artorvian MrFlimFlammer: http://tiny.cc/MrFlimFlammer Kyle Blane Plays: http://tiny.cc/KyleBlanePlays PuffingFish HQ: http://tiny.cc/PuffingFishHQ Wintertooth100: http://tiny.cc/Wintertooth100 ImGP: http://tiny.cc/ImGP Jagiero: http://tiny.cc/Jagiero JustinL: http://tiny.cc/JustinL Kafers: http://tiny.cc/Kafers tinkfro: http://tiny.cc/tinkfro KennyZope: http://tiny.cc/KennyZope ►AfterLife SMP AfterLife SMP is a survival multiplayer server started in late 2014 that is a private (whitelisted) server. In this episode, Grian Chatten reads “The Windhover” by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Chatten is the frontman of the Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C., recently described by NME as "the new heroes of the rock resurrection." The members of the group met while attending music college in Dublin and initially bonded over a shared love for Irish literature. Their second album, A Hero's Death, has been nominated for a 2021 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Gerard Manley Hopkins was an English poet and Jesuit priest who spent the last years of his life as a professor of Greek and Latin at University College Dublin. His poems were not published until 30 years after his death in 1889.“The Windhover” by Gerard Manley Hopkins appears in Gerard Manley Hopkins: The Major Works, published by Oxford University Press. Keep up with Fontaines D.C. on Twitter, Instagram, and at fontainesdc.com. Click here to watch the music video for "Big," the song heard briefly at the beginning of this episode.
Frontman Grian Chatten talks about the pressure of the first two years as a signed band, his early love of bands like Pixies and Kings of Leon, how the band recorded their sophomore effort A Hero's Death and how it feels to have not played them to a live crowd yet.
