Future Constitutional Change: The Need to Prepare

IIEA Talks

The political landscape across the island of Ireland has been changing over the past decade. Demographic changes, Brexit, polling data, and the realignment of traditional politics in the Oireachtas all point to the need to prepare for the increasing inevitability of substantial constitutional change in the future. Dialogue around the potential for a United Ireland has become more prevalent, particularly in Northern Ireland. In his address to the IIEA, Senator Conor Murphy discusses how this now requires more structured formal planning involving the Irish Government to ensure the necessary preparations are in place for a smooth transition in the event of constitutional change. Speaker bio: Conor Murphy was appointed as Sinn Féin Leader of the Seanad in February 2025. In 1998, after serving as a Newry and Mourne councillor for eight years, he was elected to the Assembly where he chaired the Assembly Committee, was the Party Chief Whip, and also held the position of Group Leader of the Sinn Féin MLAs. In 2005, Senator Murphy became the first Irish Republican to be elected as MP for Newry and Armagh, he then retained the seat in 2010. In 2007, Conor was appointed the Minister for Regional Development, a position that he held until 2011. In 2012, as part of Sinn Féin's commitment to ending double-jobbing, he left the Assembly to concentrate on his role as an MP.

Firefighters across the country have been tackling more wildfires this week - from the Mourne mountains in Northern Ireland to the Scottish Highlands and North Yorkshire moors. These fires in rural areas are difficult to fight. In the Mournes more than 140 fires have been reported in the past few days and firefighters say most were started deliberately. Various countryside organisations, including the Countryside Alliance and the CLA alongside farming unions have been raising awareness of the dangers of wildfires and ways of preventing them. The Ulster Farmers Union is calling for more grazing and controlled burning in some protected areas to reduce the risks. We're focusing on farmed fish this week and salmon really dominates this sector. It's not without its critics who say production is at the expense of the environment and fish welfare. However the industry in Scotland says its continuing to change and improve. We visit an island site owned by Norwegian fish farmer MOWI which believes that farming in deeper more remote waters will help solve some of the problems. The first asparagus of the season is one vegetable that's widely anticipated and valued and one Scottish farm has found a way of edging ahead of most of the others by making use of redundant fruit polytunnels.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Today we head off to rural Northern Ireland to talk to Mario Sierra, third-generation weaver at the family-owned Mourne Textiles. While Ireland has long been known for its linen, Mario is concerned that after some parts of the linen industry were closed down around 30 years ago, the skills and technology to process flax are on the verge of being lost forever. This has led him to seek out remaining machinery for processing linen fibres and people that have the know-how and skills to operate them. To aid in this he is running a crowdfunding drive to start up a micro-mill to process linen fibres through to yarn. We talk about the ambitions and the challenges, of life in in a family-run weaving business and quite a bit about what makes a product meaningful. The poem is titled “A Returned Soldier's Lament” I've renamed the song 1924 partly because I have made small changes to the text  -  and have added a verse,  but also the date is really significant to the meaning of the words.  The poem references WW1 from that date: being 6 years after the war ended, 9 years after the majority of the ANZAC troops joined the war and 8 years after their greatest involvement and losses both at Gallipoli and all along the Western front. Oh  -  and it's going to be on our next duo album that will be out sometime this year.  Caveat warning, however; -   we're so busy doing a load of other things  -  including the beginnings of a new Purcells Polyphonic Party album as well as festivals and folk clubs and recording for TV and games…. that any plan for launching is going to have to be quite  vague. 44:20 - Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer "1924" 50:12 - THANKS 51:48 - Paddyman "The Best Pub Party in the World" from One for the Road 54:36 - Kellys Wayke "Walk the Mile" from Kellys Wayke 58:10 - the commoners "What's Your Whiskey For" from What's Your Whiskey For 1:01:42 - Michael Maloney "'Round the Mountains of Mourne" from January Hopeful 1:05:32 - CLOSING 1:07:11 - The Druids "South Australia" 1:09:35 - CREDITS The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn, The Celtfather and our Patrons on Patreon. Helen Mark is in County Down, where woodland which has been in private hands for centuries is being opened up to the public. Mourne Park was owned by the same family for five hundred years, but has now been bought by the Woodland Trust. Restoration work is underway at the 385 acre site - clearing invasive plants which have smothered some of the ancient trees, and marking out new walking trails for visitors. Almost half the forest here meets the criteria to classify as ancient woodland, which is one of Northern Ireland's rarest habitats. Helen also finds out about recovery work going on to restore the land after last year's devastating wildfires in the Mourne mountains, and learns how sheep are helping the National Trust to monitor the recovery of the landscape, by wearing GPS trackers attached to special collars. En route she encounters St Patrick's Way – an 82-mile walking trail which spans two counties and connects Christian heritage sites between Armagh and Downpatrick. Helen walks a section of the route, with a journalist-turned-nun as her guide. Presented by Helen Mark and produced by Emma Campbell.

In the first of two back-to-back hikes in the Mourne Mountains Clare walks from Bloody Bridge near Newcastle, on the coast of County Down, up into the hills. Led by Alex Rose of the Northern Ireland Young Walkers, they begin at a stone sculpture which – from a certain angle – look like a human face in profile. This is the Smuggler's Head which helps to tell the story of the ‘Brandy Pad' a local smuggler's route. It's a history-rich Ramblings which continues by following the Bloody Bridge River, so called because bodies thrown into the water, following a massacre during the 1641 rebellion, turned it blood red. Soon they're climbing steeply up to one of the Mourne summits, Chimney Rock, partly following an old quarry-rail track used to bring granite down to sea-level. The Northern Ireland Young Walkers were formed in 2005 as a way of getting more youthful hikers out and about. It's such a successful club that people don't like to leave, so the age range has widened as the members have aged. The second Mournes ramble – recorded on the same day - will be broadcast next in the series. It starts at a place whose name couldn't be more of a contrast: Happy Valley. On Sat 13th July at 2am five hearty souls stood under the arch in Donard car park at the foot of the Mourne mountains ready to take on the Denis Rankin Round, this magnificent course has been hot over the last few weeks with some great attempts ending both with success and failure. They say a true challenge is one that completion is never guaranteed, and with only 24hrs to traverse all of the Mourne mountain peaks over 400m it would take a lot of skill and luck to complete the 90km course, with over 6500m of ascent strong navigation skills would be required to ensure success. The team was made up of Sean Nickell the key lead out man and navigator who has more miles under his belt than the proclaimers, Marty ‘Chipper’ Campbell and Barry McCarroll all three of which had competed in races such as the 108 mile Donegal Hero, Keith Clarke Deca-Ironman and Mark Weir who’s experience racing through the Mournes would become invaluable. Its episode eleven and its time to get your bike set-up for the winter months. I chat with Kieran and Louis, founders of Mech Monkey about those very things. I ran into the guys at the Mourne 24hr race at Castlewellan, got chatting and they very kindly agreed to come onto the show. We hooked-up at their workshop/store in Belfast (and what a cool workshop it is) on a Friday evening to talk bike maintenance, set-up, tyre pressures and a load of other stuff bike related. The guys have a long and successful background in the bike maintenance world and certainly know their stuff. It was great to get them on the show and spend some time with them in their workshop.

Raymond McArdle (@mcardle_23) is Head Chef at Restaurant 23 and winner of the Great British Menu 2013. Growing up on the South Down coast he fell in love with food due to his grandmother baking a variety of breads from stone milled flour. He decided to become a chef taking what he learnt as a child and building upon it using earthy and delicate flavours to create modern Irish food. He learnt his trade with Paul Rankin and Michael Deane, the only two chefs at the time to have Michelin stars for 9 years. McArdle moved to the Nuremore Hotel as Head Chef and achieved three AA Rosette’s and Best Hotel in Ulster numerous times. Moving home to the coast was in his heart, he missed the rugged coastline and ‘where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea’! He wanted a simpler life creating his ideal food.
