As we slither into the Year of the Snake this Chinese New Year, it's the perfect time to shed our fears and learn more about these fascinating creatures. While snakes are often portrayed as symbols of fear or danger, they are in fact vital components of our natural world. We catch up with naturalist Andrew Sebastian, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ecotourism and Conservation Society of Malaysia (ECOMY), to discuss Malaysia's incredible snake diversity, and why we should replace fear with fascination when it comes to these remarkable reptiles. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents Around 30 people turned out to meet Green candidate Nic Dedeluk when she came to Mansons Hall on Monday, October 7. Cortes Currents recorded 145 minutes of the two hour meeting, which is far too much to fit into a half hour broadcast. So today's program consists of a few highlights. A copy of the unedited audio is embedded in the written version of this story. As a third of the audience came from the Cortes Island Academy, Dedeluk told them, “I'm so thankful that youth are here and participating in this. You're part of the reason I'm doing this. I'm a mother, I'm a grandmother, and I'm concerned for the children yet unborn.” Dedeluk also gave an overview of her life before becoming a candidate, “I am a marine biologist. About 25 years ago, I came up to study whale/ vessel interactions. I fell in love with the area and I've lived in Alert Bay since 2003. Some of you who have spent time on the watermight've run into a small Zodiac program that does boater education and lets people know about the whale watching guidelines, Strait Watch. That was a program that I helped create in 2003, as well as the Cetus Research and Conservation Society. That program and society still carries on today even though I'm no longer with them.” “In 2013, I started working for the Namgis First Nation. I'm their Aquatic Resources Manager. If it has to do with the ocean or the rivers, those are projects that fall under my supervision and I really love my job.” “While working with Namgis, and still under Namgis, I was subcontracted to work on another project called the Broughton Aquaculture Transition Initiative. That was a four year program where we did work with two fish farm companies, MOWI and Cermaq, as we transitioned to closure 17 fish farms in the Broughton area. That program just ended in March, and so I'm now back to my aquatic resources position with just Namgis. The Broughton project was a project of the Namgis, the Mamalilikulla, the Kwikwasut'inuxw Haxwa'mis nations together. As a biologist, I have experience working with multiple levels of government and organizations to find selective successful paths forward meeting the conservation needs. So that's quite a bit about me. I'd love to hear about you. I'd love to learn more about your concerns on Cortes and hopefully answer some of your questions.” The format we agreed upon at the beginning of the meeting was that speakers who were okay with having their comments included in the broadcast would speak their names and anyone who wished to remain anonymous would not. I believe everyone gave their name.

The Ecotourism & Conservation Society of Malaysia (ECOMY) is an environmental NGO that is focussed on conserving Malaysia's unique habitats, plants and wildlife, and to actively promote and pursue sustainable tourism as one key element in conservation. The group, founded by leading naturalists in Malaysia, have also been working on several projects with the Orang Asli Bateq tribe of Kampung Aur, who live along the Tembeling River in Kuala Tahan, Pahang. The initiatives include assisting them to gain access to clean water and proper sanitation, providing the community with solar lamps to assist with their energy needs, and even supplying humanitarian aid during the monsoon season. Another recent project has been to train the community's youth to become certified tour guides, to promote sustainable tourism in the area. Over 100 elephants and 350 people lose their lives to human elephant conflict in India. This is not surprising given that only 22% of elephant habitat in India is found within protected areas. The issue of HEC is compounded by increasing habitat fragmentation, due to urbanization, development of linear infrastructure and cropland expansion. On this episode, I interview Prachi Mehta who is the Executive Director of Research at the Wildlife Research and Conservation Society. We discuss the drivers of HEC, potential solutions, the use of technology to mitigate HEC and the works of WRCS. We also talk about the highly engandered Forest Owlet, a species which is making a reappearance around central India over the last few years. This is a public episode. In this episode we talk with primate specialist, founder of the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GReP), and president of the Gibbon Conservation Society in Malaysia about the importance of the rehabilitation and conservation of these incredible primates. Bam's Bio: Mariani Ramli a.k.a. Bam Arrogancia founded the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GReP) in 2013, after learning about the plight of gibbons and other primates in Malaysia. She serves as the director of GReP and current President for GCS. She has a degree in animal biology, was a wildlife ranger with the Malaysian Wildlife Department for more than 10 years, has worked as a project coordinator and researcher for the Copenhagen Zoo, studying flat headed cats, and she has studied gibbon rehab from international organisations such as Phnam Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre in Cambodia and Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Thailand. She is a member of IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group Section on Small Apes, a rare and distinct international honour. Mariani was recently a winner of the prestigious Young Leadership Awards by the Edge and has received the 2018 American Primatological Society Award. She was chosen as one of the Top Five Women in Leadership in Environmental Sustainability in 2017 and has been widely featured by both local and international media. She is also recognised as Malaysia's Eco Champion by Roots and Shoots, a part of the Jane Goodall Institute. The ‘mother of gibbons' herself, Bam has dedicated the last 7 years of her life to the gibbons. For the last 7 years, she has done everything from wiping poo to being a gibbon psychiatrist, cleaning enclosures to building them, menial paperwork to writing scientific proposals, selling GCS t-shirts to inspiring hundreds of kids and so much more, all for the gibbons. In the years Bam spent working as a ranger in the forests of Malaysia, she has come to love our rainforests and the species that thrive in it. “I love my country so much, I'm giving back to my country by serving the wildlife.” Bam's love for the gibbons knows no bounds, she has sacrificed everything and faced so many challenges to make this project a reality. When asked why she does it, all she says is, “Every sacrifice is so worth it when I see them make progress, every step is a step closer to freedom for them.” For more information about the Gibbon Conservation Society and info on how to help GCS and these incredible animals go to: www.gibbonconservationsociety.org Follow them => Facebook: @gibbonconservationsociety Instagram: @gibbonconservationsociety Want to really help? => Introducing our new Adopt a Gibbon Program! You can now symbolically adopt any of our gibbons for just USD 9 (est RM 39) a month. Or you can buy them fruits for only USD 3 (est RM 14) a month. You can cancel your subscription at any time. You can also adopt more than one gibbon or gift the adoption to a loved one. Through this we hope to create a consistent source of funding to help support the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, as well as create more awareness on how every gibbon and their rehabilitation needs are different. #EveryIndividualMatters So pledge to support one of our gibbons or just browse the webpage to get to know them a little. Each gibbon is at a different stage of rehabilitation and recovery. It takes years and dedicated understanding to help these gibbons through their rehabilitation journeys. KampungKu is a series of renewable energy projects dedicated to resolving the energy-related needs of Orang Asli communities across Malaysia, by providing small-scale solar solutions. With help from the Ecotourism & Conservation Society of Malaysia (ECOMY) and other partners, ten easy-to-use, mobile photovoltaic cells and solar lamps were installed in cooperation with the Orang Asli of Kampung Dedari — a village community located upriver from Kuala Tahan and across from Taman Negara — in less than six months. Following the success of that project, more projects were initiated to help other Orang Asli communities, and even more are hopefully on the horizon. We find out more from Andrew Sebastian, the Founder & Chief Executive Officer of the Ecotourism & Conservation Society of Malaysia (ECOMY) and Arran Rahul Hashim, the Lead Project Coordinator and Co-founder of Kampungku. During this episode of the Conservation Cast, Maya spoke with Nick Gladstone, an evolutionary biologist and doctoral student at Auburn University who works in freshwater snail conservation. Nick shared his current studies and research, as well as his story of how he got into the field of freshwater life, particularly freshwater snails. Nick also shared his myriad of experiences in cave biology, detailing the way in which biospeleologists study organisms that live in caves. The two answered viewer-sent questions such as why freshwater snails are important within their ecosystem, what their main conservation threats are, and how giant african land snails became one of the most invasive species in the world. Maya's community raised $1554.10 for Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society. FMCS is a non-profit organization aiming to inform the public of the incredible life history of freshwater mollusks, as well as raise awareness of the issues that have caused the decline.

On Thursday, 25th June 2020 a few BMUC friends decided to go for a walk at Radiata Plateau. Who should we meet just as we arrived but our local NSW MP and BMUC member Trish Doyle MP? Before we knew it we had the honour of witnessing the handover of Radiata Plateau to National Parks, as Trish asked us to delay our walk and wait for the NSW Minister for the Environment Matt Kean to arrive. With the change from private ownership to public ownership came a name change. Radiata Plateau is now called Ngula Bulgarabang, meaning "very large wood forest". The Blue Mountains Conservation Society have been campaigning for 30 years for the NSW government to purchase Ngula Bulgarabang for its inclusion in the Blue Mountains National Park. Their patient and persistent activism is inspiring. Aunty Merle Williams and Aunty Sharyn Halls were there to welcome us to Country and had some very "interesting" things to say, particularly about Warragamba Dam and the importance of connections. We hope the Minister took note and will act on their advice! We were so lucky to be there to record the event. This podcast has resulted from that meeting. You can also watch video of the event via our YouTube channel. We hope both become an important record of part of the Blue Mountains story. The Blue Mountains Gazette have spent many years documenting the Conservation Society's struggle and it was wonderful to see them there to record the achievement. Their work was acknowledged by Minister Kean. We should also acknowledge the NSW Minister for the Environment, Matt Kean for making this happen. It's not often you'll see BMUC praise a Liberal so this may also be another historic event! This episode was first broadcast on Radio Blue Mountains 89.1FM on 26th June 2020. This month we host our first ever guest – Derek Jang of the Porpoise Conversation Society! Show Notes: –What You Can Do –Porpoise Conversation Society –Vaquita Information
In part two of “Trouble in the Tongass” I speak with Andrew Thoms, Executive Director of the Sitka Conservation Society. We discuss all of the things that make the Tongass special, the local economy of Southeast Alaska, the Roadless Rule, the consequences of logging the remaining old growth forests and the threats to subsistence living. The old growth forests of the Tongass sustain more than can be properly articulated and expressed in this short miniseries. Their value is priceless. As ecosystems collapse around the globe, we cannot afford to continue on our current path of destruction. The familiar forces of greed and shortsightedness are at work. The Tongass belongs to all of us, not the select few multi-national corporations that seek to capitalize on its lumber. Not to mention that rights that we have failed to properly extend to the plants and animals that which we share the Earth. The biota of the Tongass is world-renowned and worth saving on its own merit. The Roadless Rule is the glue that is keeping the Tongass ecosystem intact while providing flexibility to construct roads for communities and allowing native and local peoples to harvest food from the land and rivers. Ideally, wilderness designations would best protect these forests from logging interests, but wide scale implementation would work against the sustenance needs of local communities. The draft environmental impact statement has been released regarding the Roadless Rule Please, take a moment from your busy day and write in your comments to the USDA. Tell them to keep the Roadless Rule in place for the Tongass National Forest (alternative one). The email address is akroadlessrule@fs.fed.us Alternatively, please use Sitka Conservation Society's commenting tool here https://mobilize4change.org/q4UnptvUSDA Draft EIS can be found here. https://www.usda.gov/media/press-releases/2019/10/15/usda-forest-service-seeks-public-comment-draft-environmental-impactIf you have not checked out part one of this series with Dan Cannon from the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, I encourage you to have a listen for a more complete picture of what is happening in the Tongass. Talked with Naki Carter, Communications & Marketing, Callie, John and Priscilla - the Porcupine from Palm Beach Zoo and Conservation Society. The Zoological Society of the Palm Beaches, Inc. (Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society) exists to inspire people to act on behalf of wildlife and the natural world. They do this via endangered species propagation, education and support of conservation initiatives in the field. One of these ways is with their animal experience at the zoo. Priscilla, the porcupine came as an animal ambassador and everyone loved meeting her and taking videos and doing a FB Live. The zoo allows people to connect more closely with animals while learning about their habitats, background and how they can become good stewards for the animals and the planet. Listeners can check out their first "Roar and Pour" event on May 25th. To become a volunteer and to get more info, listeners can to go www.palmbeachzoo.org
