IM Willy Hendriks is an award-winning chess author, historian and chess trainer. He has just released his fourth book, The Philosopher and the Housewife:Tarrasch, Nimzowitsch and the Evolution of Chess. This book is the completion of a trilogy which casts a new light on chess history and looks at the evolution of chess ideas. Willy's newest book focuses on the early 20th century, with a particular emphasis on Aron Nimzowitsch and Siegbert Tarrasch. We tackle questions such as: Was Aron Nimzowitsch the most pretentious chess player of them all?  What does Willy think of My System?  Have the stylistic differences between Tarrasch and Nimzowitsch been exaggerated? What can we learn about engines and modern chess through reading about these players?  Our conversation is filled with fun stories and reflections about these players, along with the contributions of the third “main character,” Semion Alapin.   We also discuss Willy's own competitive career and his potential next projects. It is always a pleasure to read Willy's work and to speak with him.   Timestamps of topics discussed are below.  Perpetual Chess Improvement Audiobook information- The links for where to order the Perpetual Chess Improvement audiobook are on this page. Recorded June 8, 2024 at the National Open in Las Vegas  Chess Books Recaptured returns to revisit an old book which now has a modern twist. My System by Aron Nimzowitsch is one of the best-selling and most recommended chess books of all time, but the original version has not aged well in some respects. In Book Recap #18, IM Christof Sielecki and I highlighted some of the classic book's shortcomings as viewed through a modern lens. Luckily, GM Alex Fishbein decided to update the book for a 21st century audience. The result is My System: Fast Track Edition, from Russell Enterprises (also available via Forward Chess). During my recent trip to the National Open in Las Vegas, Alex joined me to discuss My System's legacy, his personal history with the book,  and why he decided that the chess world needed a better version. Following our chat, Alex took some questions from the audience, and briefly shared his thoughts on my book, Perpetual Chess Improvement. This week the Adult Improver Series returns with an extremely insightful guest. Dan Bock is a North Carolina-based software engineer and dad, who finally got serious about chess improvement in 2021. At this time, Dan began to compete frequently, utilize digital flashcards, and make a conscious effort to make friends in the chess world in order to help make his hobby more fulfilling. Dan's results have been rare and inspiring, as he has seen USCF rating rise from the high 1500s to the high 1900s (USCF) in the last 3 years. As Dan explains, while he is very directed in his decisions of how to approach chess study, he does not put in outlandish an number of hours of study per day. He is very focused on what actually decides the outcomes of his own games, and has made constant progress by keeping that as his North Star. I find Dan's story very inspiring and am excited to see his continued progress!  You can find the Adult Improver Spotify Playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/75Uoqz2BoRt2IiTCeOfuky?si=29035838af4d4345 0:00- You can find more information about the National Open here: https://www.vegaschessfestival.com/national-open/ The live “My System” podcast with GM Alex Fishbein will be on Saturday, June 8, at 7:30 PM.  Thanks to our sponsor, Chessable.com! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Harms and possibilities of schooling, published by TsviBT on February 22, 2022 on LessWrong. To explore better possibilities for nurturing new minds, and to care about the problem in the first place, it helps to remember what's wrong with what we do to new minds. John Taylor Gatto speaks about this from experience and insight: Seven Lessons Taught in School, 1991 (If you're going to read the following, at least read the seven lessons (part I) of that essay.) Here's another list of harms caused by schooling. 1. You aren't a mind, and don't bother trying to behave like one. Children naturally attend to things until they're done with them: From Maria Montessori, My System of Education, 1915: IPFS pdf link A little girl, about three years of age, was deeply absorbed in the work of placing wooden blocks and cylinders in a frame for that purpose. The expression of her face was that of such intense attention, that it was almost a revelation to me. Never before had I seen a child look with such "fixedness" upon an object, and my conviction about the instability of attention which goes incessantly from one thing to another, a fact which is so characteristic in little children, made the phenomenon the more remarkable to me. I watched the child without interrupting her, and counted how many times she would do her work over and over. It seemed that she was never going to stop. As I saw that it would take a very long time, I took the little armchair on which she was sitting and placed child and chair on the big table. Hastily she put the frame across the chair, gathered blocks and cylinders in her lap, and continued her work undisturbed. I invited the other children to sing, but the little girl went on with her work and continued even after the singing had ceased. I counted forty-four different exercises which she made, and when she finally stopped, and did so absolutely independently from an exterior cause that could disturb her, she looked around with an expression of great satisfaction, as if she were awakening from a deep and restful sleep. The impression I received from the observation was that of a discovery. The same phenomenon became very common among those children, and it was noticed in every school in every country where my system was introduced; therefore it can be considered as a constant reaction which takes place in connection with certain exterior conditions that can be well established. Each time a similar "polarization" of the attention occurred, the child began to transmute itself completely; it became calmer, more expressive, more intelligent, and evidenced extraordinary interior qualities, which recalled the phenomena of the highest mentality. When the phenomenon of polarization of the attention had occurred, all that was confused and drifting in the conscience of the child seemed to assume a form, the marvelous characters of which were reproduced in each individual. School usually steamrolls this process. The teacher has dominion over your attention; you have to either listen to what the teacher is saying, or work on the worksheets. Your location and (nominal) topic switches every hour. Even at home you do worksheets and projects. Your attention isn't you or yours; you're at war with your attention, it says no but your teacher--and implicitly your parents and college admissions and society, and "you"--insist. Not only are you not the authority on what is worth it for you to spend minutes, days, or years on; if you are even consulted, it's superficial ("Which current event to do a report on? There are many options.") and maybe only for Potemkin village purposes ("We offer many electives."). This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Andrew. He's 24, has a career, and is obsessed with chess. Andrew's had tremendous growth over the last 2 years. He started by getting whomped by his 800 roommate, but now has a current peak of 2300. Impressive stuff indeed! We talked about a wide range of topics such as videos, books, and his love of chess. My biggest takeaway from the interview is that Andrew hasn't used plans to guide his progress. Instead, Andrew does what he enjoys. Sometimes that means studying, other times that means playing chess. If Andrew isn't in the mood for chess that day, he doesn't force it. He isolated two books as having the biggest impact: My System by Nimzowitsch and Silman's Amateur's Mind. He also spends a lot of time on Chessable with books such as the Woodpecker Method and 100 Endgames you must know. As always you can support the show at https://www.patreon.com/ChessJourneys. 137. Dating vs. Courtship: Our honest thoughts

Our topic today – our takes on courtship and dating - might be considered a bit controversial by some! You may recall an early episode of the podcast in which we talked about our own history involving this topic, and if you did hear that episode, then you may also remember that we have a pretty unique story of how Jesse and I ended up in a relationship together and how we had strict courtship rules set by our parents. We are going to dive into this in this episode and reveal how we plan to approach this with our own kids. We received a question from a listener recently asking us if we allow our older kids to date, which is what inspired us to do a podcast episode focused on this topic, and as Jesse puts it, we prefer to see ourselves as sources of guidance for our kids rather than as dictators, and with that being said, while we realize that this may come as a surprise to some of you, we actually do not have rules about dating. What we instead do is have conversations with our kids rather than lay down hard and fast rules. Children need to learn how to make good decisions for themselves, and as I discuss in my book Love-Centered Parenting, it's so important to love our kids in such a way that we are leaning into them and listening to them, doing our best to understand their emotions and their struggles. We should, after all, be raising kids so that they can become adults as opposed to perpetually dependent children. I hope that this episode was helpful for you in one way or another! Please reach out to me as I love hearing from you, and be sure to tune in next time!   In This Episode: [0:32] – Today's topic is courtship and dating! This month on Chess Books Recaptured I am joined by renowned Chessable author, IM Christof Sielecki, to discuss what may be the best known chess book of all time. Aron Nimzowitsch's My System. There was a time when My System seemed to be universally recommended as an indispensable manual for newer chess players, but in recent years, with so many excellent learning resources, it has often been criticized as well. Christof and I try to contextualize the good and the bad of My System. We discuss everything in the book from Nimzo's famous quotes to his “dad jokes”, to what does, and does not hold up to the scrutiny of modern chess analysis. Whether you love or hate this book, we hope that this podcast can help you decide if this book is worth (re)visiting. It has been a while, but Perpetual Chess is back with a blockbuster bonus book recap podcast. For this episode of Chess Books Recaptured, I am joined by FIDE Master Nate Solon to compare two books about one of the most famous chess tournaments of all time, the 1953 Zurich-Neuhausen Candidates tournament.(More commonly known as just, Zurich 1953) GM David Bronstein's book, Zurich International Chess Tournament, 1953 , is one of the most popular chess books of all time, and is often recommended on this podcast. GM Miguel Najdorf's tournament book, Zurich 1953: 15 Contenders for the World Chess Championship, is also considered a classic by many, but may not be as well known due to having only been translated into English in the past decade. So how do we compare the books? Do they live up to their reputation as instructional chess book classics? What made the tournament so special? What are we to make of the “ghost writing” and “match fixing” allegations which have come to light in recent decades? So much to discuss! We even feature a guest appearance by renowned author and GM Andy Soltis to help answer these questions! Please read on for lots more details and relevant links.  0:00- Why did we choose these two books? Zurich International Chess Tournament, 1953 - Kindle edition by Bronstein, David. Some of you may recall the podcast episode that we did last year during lockdown about some of our craziest travel stories. Well, we're coming back at you with another round of that, sharing another crazy vacation story! Buckle up because this one is really crazy! We pretty recently traveled to Wichita, Kansas and had to book a hotel in advance (something that we normally wouldn't do for various reasons). Jesse chose one hotel in particular for a couple of reasons – (1) he had visited the hotel before and was therefore somewhat familiar with it and (2) it was conveniently located near family that we were visiting. After I took a look online at the average ratings of the hotel which were relatively high, we decided to stay at this hotel, especially since brief looks at reviews promised amenities such as a pool and a hot breakfast in the morning. It was also very, very inexpensive! Well, I don't want to spoil the story here, so you're going to have to tune in and listen to hear the details, but let's just say that there was a very good reason that the hotel was priced so low. Listen in to find out how our hotel room was such a lemon that we ended up with a smashed window and how this was a learning experience for us that taught us various lessons such as why it's important when looking at hotels online to not only look at average ratings (which are based on years' worth of reviews) but to also actually read a good number of reviews, especially recent reviews. We also talk about how this experience taught us how quickly perspective on certain things can change. Do you have any crazy travel or vacation stories? Have you ever stayed in a disastrous hotel room, and if so, were you able to resolve the issue? What did the experience teach you? Reach out to me with your crazy travel stories! I would love to hear them!   In This Episode: [0:32] – We are bringing you another crazy vacation story! [1:16] – Jesse has just started using the Libby app! [4:12] – Jesse just recently finished reading Bill O'Reilly's Killing the SS. [6:15] – We marvel over what Killing the SS is about. [9:28] – I have been reading The Last Year of the War by Susan Meissner. [12:11] - You can change the settings in Gmail to delete emails (rather than archive them) when you swipe on them! [14:36] – I read aloud an email sent in by a listener. [15:55] – I share the story of having bought tofu recently and what I learned. [17:36] – Jesse follows up on his recent Jiu-Jitsu story. [20:04] – Jesse came home from sparring recently with bruises all over him! [21:49] – Today's sponsor is Annie's Kit Clubs! [23:56] – We dive into our latest crazy vacation story! [26:11] – I looked at the ratings of a particular hotel that Jesse picked out. [28:35] – I begin to reveal what happened when we pulled up to the hotel. [31:23] – Find out what happened on our first morning in the hotel! [34:14] – Jesse made the receptionist aware of what had happened in the room. [36:40] – We ultimately decided to check out and go to a different hotel.   Links and Resources: Crystal Paine Crystal Paine on Instagram Crystal Paine on Twitter crystal@moneysavingmom.com Money Saving Mom Money Saving Mom on Facebook Money Saving Mom Deal Seekers Facebook group Love-Centered Parenting The Crystal Paine Show - Episode 79: Our Craziest Travel Stories The Crystal Paine Show - Episode 129: My System for Keeping on Top of Emails Libby Bill O'Reilly & Martin Dugard – Killing the SS: The Hunt for the Worst War Criminals in History Susan Meissner – The Last Year of the War Annie's Kit Clubs - Website

Since my book, Thrive Principles, came out, people have asked me why I shifted my focus from saving marriages to thriving. In reality, there is no shift. My System on saving a marriage is the same path to having a thriving marriage. In fact, my focus from the beginning was on how to have a thriving life in all areas of living -- including in marriage. Which means that there are many cross-over points between how we thrive and how we save a marriage. In this week's Save The Marriage Podcast, I discuss three anchors of Thrive Principles that can help you address the issues in your marriage. These three principles can help you save your marriage. Just remember the acronym, ARC. Acceptance Responsibility Control Use these three principles as you work to save your marriage.
