Claudia Hollingsworth is the kind of person who would excel at anything she put her mind to. The 19-year-old Australian is already an Olympic semi-finalist, World Under-20 silver medallist and Australian Champion in the 800m, and she's just getting started. In this conversation, we delve into Claudia's incredible year, what it's like to train with On Athletics Club Oceania, and how she's ready to go all in as a professional athlete (with uni studies on the side). You'll also hear a few quirky facts about Claudia's passions off the track (hint: pinecones and dead bugs). Claudia first captured attention at primary school when she was selected for the Pacific School Games and competed at the National Primary Schools Cross Country. But it was when world 5000m bronze medallist Craig Mottram became her coach that her track-and-field career really started to gain momentum. While still at high school, she earned selection for the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon. This year in a highly competitive 800m field at the Paris Olympics, Claudia wowed the world with a mature, clinical and confident run that saw her come 2nd in her heat and sail straight through to the semi-finals. Sport has always been part of Claudia's DNA, having been an avid Australian Rules football player with the East Brighton Vampires and the Sandringham Dragons. Although she considered applying to the AFL Women's draft, ultimately track and field won her heart. -- Claudia's instagram: @claudiahollingsworth_ Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

Today's guest is a true Australian legend, considered by many to be the world's greatest surf Ironman of all-time. A masterful surfer and life coaching guru, he transitioned from dominating the surf lifesaving universe to inspiring countless others in their personal journeys. He's a four time World Surf Ironman Champion, six times Australian Surf Ironman Champion, and three times second. He also won the Uncle Toby's Super Series on four occasions. He was crowned a Member of the Order of Australia in 1996 for his services to surf lifesaving, and is a member of the Australian, Queensland, and Gold Coast Surf Lifesaving Halls of Fame. Television audiences during the 1990s watched in awe as this man smoked the competition and mastered the ocean. A truly inspiring feat. Today, we'll dive into his remarkable life. Welcome to the Greg Bennett Show, Trevor Hendy.
In this episode, I welcome Australian Champion Circle Boat Racer Chris Palmer who is also the promoter of the Australian BAD Boat Championship. The Australian Blown Alcohol Displacement (BAD) boats are some of the most exciting pieces of equipment in boat racing. The V-bottomed V-drives are powered by up to 600 cu. in., 2000 plus horsepower engines and race on tight courses on rough narrow rivers throughout Australia. In researching the subject matter, I discovered that in Australia, flatbottoms and v-bottoms are considered displacement hulls because they displace water (pushing it out of the way) when they run as opposed to tunnel boats and hydros which run over the top of the water. This year's championship is a continuation of Palmer's USA vs. Australia B.A.D. Boat Challenge that he started in 2007. Unfortunately, none of the US based K-boat teams were able to make the trek Down Under for the 2024 event. Round one of the event will be run January 20-21 in Windsor, New South Wales while the final round will culminate the following weekend, January 27-28 in Berri, South Australia. You can watch a livestream of the event on the event's Facebook page Australian BAD Boat Championship In the episode, we discuss the many differences between Australian and American sprint boats and racing. Palmer talks about Australia's recent tragic years of loosing many racing legends and their new found commitment to safety that included legislating mandatory safety cells in the upper classes of displacement hulls. In the episode, Palmer talks about his family's history in racing and his journey from driving hydros to BAD boats where he has won Australia's coveted Marj Watson Trophy five times. It was interesting to learn of the time that Palmer spent competing in Judo. Palmer told stories about training all around the world. He has won multiple International, Continental and National championships and is currently a coath at the Ulverstone Judo Club. Sharon's passion for horses was first noticed when she was caught riding a bush horse at 4 years of age. She would climb up the front leg and haul herself up onto the back via the mane proud as a peacock. She still doesn't know to this day how she survived, but by 14 she was working with racehorses and riding competitively in the show ring and winning up to Open Minor Royal classes by 18. Her desire to understand the biomechanics of the horse led her down the path of dissections and research and if that wasn't enough, she built horse skeletons where students could move the limbs so to have a better understanding of the leg in motion. This became a critical factor when she rehabilitated or assisted in the selection of horses for performance riders in Australia and overseas. Her keen eye for detail saw her involved with horses that became or were already the Australian Champion in 8 different disciplines, with some competing at WEG and or the Olympics. With Equine degrees and a number of other qualifications in tow, Sharon's research and published scientific papers have seen her lecture around the World as a key note or guest speaker at numerous events. So with this in mind, Sharon will be speaking on one of the current topics associated with her research - Equine Complex Vertebral Malformation (ECVM), or the Congenital Malformation of the 6th and 7th Cervical Vertebrae.

This is an inside look into the life of an MMA athlete that doesn't really get told anywhere and was fascinating. Jack is also my best friend, so having him on the show was special.
Having been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the dual Olympic gold medallist spoke about her greatest achievements, how much she appreciated "trying to perfect" a challenge to an opponent, and more.
I (Jordan) couldn't be more excited to bring this episode to you. We've interviewed some fantastic guests already on this podcast; elite athletes, former pros, olympians, world class coaches, experts in their field… And at the start of every episode, I introduce my fellow host of the podcast, former Australian Ironman Champion Gerard Donnelly. So because it's our 100th episode, today I get to interview Dad, and tell you the story of his career, how he won that Australian Ironman and so much more. For those that aren't aware, Dad hates talking about himself. And it took a bit of convincing to get him to do this episode, and open up about every detail about his professional triathlon career as an athlete, and also as a coach. There's plenty of emotion in this episode, I had goosebumps many times, we got raw, we got choked up, and for me I couldn't be prouder to be able to share this story and give you an insight into my hero, the man that has inspired me and countless other athletes and continues to do so every day. Gerard Donnelly is a ruthless competitor, a winner, a motivated athlete and an even more motivated coach. He cares about his athletes like his children and underneath a tough exterior motivated by performance and improvement is a caring mentor and friend that just wants to see you enjoy yourself. So our journey starts when Gerard decides in 1981 to try his hand at this thing called a Triathlon… What follows is years of sacrifice, hard work, mistakes made and lessons learned all on the way to reach this outrageous goal of becoming Australian Champion. How did he succeed? What happened when he took on the world's best athletes in Kona? What was the mistake he made on the world's biggest stage? LIsten to Part 1 of The Story of Gerard Donnelly to find out. It's a longer episode than normal, but every second is worth it. Part 2 will be out next week. The Get Fast Podcast is brought to you by TriVelo Coaching, where we help triathletes and cyclists like you, Train Smarter to Race Faster. If you don’t sacrifice for what you want, then what you want becomes your sacrifice. And, to maintain the drive, persistence and strength you need to continue making these sacrifices, it’s important to have a cause and a meaning much bigger than yourself. Today’s guest, Andrew (Spud Fit) Taylor, became a viral sensation when the world heard the story of his personal challenge to eat only potatoes for the entire year in 2016. In late 2015, the former junior Australian Champion marathon kayaker was in the depths of despair after yet another failed attempt in a lifetime of dieting that had left him even heavier than before – 151.7kg. So, after realising that he was a food addict, he decided to tackle his food addiction with abstinance, or as close as he could get. Andrew’s first short book, 'The D.I.Y. Spud Fit Challenge' : a how-to guide to tackling food addiction with the humble spud’ was co-authored by his wife Mandy van Zanen and has helped many people to break the shackles of food addiction. Andrew now spends his time coaching others through food addiction through 'The Spud Fit Academy' community, speaking, making Youtube videos and interviewing groundbreakers for his own podcast. He has also just released his second book. Andrew shares about: * how he first realised he had a food addiction * what made him choose to eat only potatoes * his driving force and purpose for breaking his food addiction * difference between food addiction and cravings * the power of finding a meaning bigger than yourself * his changes in thought processes which fight his cravings * if you don’t sacrifice for what you want, what you want is what you will sacrifice Andrew's challenge for the week: remove one thing from your life You can connect with Andrew at: * www.spud fit.com * andrew@spudfit.com * spudfit on all the socials Please share it with on social media and tag Andrew @spudfit and me @davejorna and @dolifebetterpodcast You can follow me on Instagram at @davejorna (www.instagram.com/davejorna) and @dolifebetterpodcast (www.instagram.com/dolifebetterpodcast). An active, sporty child, it wasn’t until Kate was in her late 20s that she discovered mountain biking and quickly fell in love with both the physical demands of the sport, but also the strong technical and strategic elements of it. In 2010, Kate lined up at the start of her first race on her entry level bike, complete with bell and reflectors; it also happened to be a mixed pairs team in a 24 hour mountain bike. Her team won their category and a love affair with 24 hour racing was born. She’s now the 2x Australian Champion and has competed at 5 World Championships, finishing inside the top 5 in every year since 2014. In this conversation, we discuss: - the mind games and self-doubt that troubled her early career, - her frustration at being ‘so close but so far’ after finishing in the Top 5 at the World Championships every year for the last 4 years, - the constant struggle between worrying about things you can control vs things you can’t (and how when you wholeheartedly let go of concern over the things you can’t control, you can not only produce your best race but be deeply proud of it), - why she relishes the challenge of proving people wrong, - the power of choice and the importance of being aware of how you are directing your energy, - her experience with the Imposter Complex, especially when wearing the green and gold Australian Champion jersey for the first time, and - whether she has any sense of ‘unfinished business’ after her performance at the World Championship in Scotland in 2018.
