IM Willy Hendriks is an award-winning chess author, historian and chess trainer. He has just released his fourth book, The Philosopher and the Housewife:Tarrasch, Nimzowitsch and the Evolution of Chess. This book is the completion of a trilogy which casts a new light on chess history and looks at the evolution of chess ideas. Willy's newest book focuses on the early 20th century, with a particular emphasis on Aron Nimzowitsch and Siegbert Tarrasch. We tackle questions such as: Was Aron Nimzowitsch the most pretentious chess player of them all? What does Willy think of My System? Have the stylistic differences between Tarrasch and Nimzowitsch been exaggerated? What can we learn about engines and modern chess through reading about these players? Our conversation is filled with fun stories and reflections about these players, along with the contributions of the third “main character,” Semion Alapin. We also discuss Willy's own competitive career and his potential next projects. It is always a pleasure to read Willy's work and to speak with him. Timestamps of topics discussed are below. As we reflect on 2022 and enter 2023, the word that has been coming in my head a lot is Success- my relationship with it, where I stand on the highs and lows of it and what I will do with it in the next chapter (especially since in the last year feeling a bit down and like a failure almost). This Wisdomist Chai clip comes from my conversation with Acting and Life Coach Daniel Dresner. It touches on the word "success" from a creative perspective. How it's not an Oscar, or a job but much more precious and individual. p.s I also feel, that if you really break the messaging down you can transfer it to any aspect of your life. I hope you enjoy this one, Happy 2022 and see you in 2023. In this encore presentation of one of our most popular episodes, the fearless and fabulous DR. ROBIN GEORGE ANDREWS joins us for an explosive IF! Robin George Andrews is a science journalist with a PhD in volcanology. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Atlantic, National Geographic, Scientific American, Atlas Obscura, and other publications. He lives in London, England. HOT off the press, his new book, "SUPERVOLCANOES: What They Reveal About Earth and the Worlds Beyond" is an anthology of magmatic mountains and fiery fountains, revels in the incomparable power of volcanoes and their eruptions. But it does more than marvel at their preternatural abilities. It also explores how their idiosyncratic, incredible displays of incandescence, past and present, reveal secrets about both themselves and the worlds to which they belong: from the forces that sculpt the sea, land and sky to the machinery that makes or breaks the existence of life. All volcanoes play their part on these dramatic planetary stages, but those in this book – those on Earth, above and below water, to those on the Moon, on Venus, on Mars and on worlds beyond – showcase this phenomenal force of nature better than any others. It's a time-travelling tale of how volcanic fire forged entire worlds, a saga 4.5 billion years in the making. Buckle up: it's one hell of a ride. Copy That Pops: Writing Tips and Psychology Hacks for Business
I have a confession to make. Even though I love listening to audiobooks and I've been in the podcasting world since 2015, I've never actually created an audiobook for myself or for a client! Did you know that: “In 2020, audiobook sales revenue in the United States reached 1.3 billion U.S. dollars, continuing the upward trend which began in 2018”? (according to Statista) So, in today's episode, I thought it would be fun to take you along for a new journey into the world of audiobook creation. I have a client who has a series of 5 books for kids ages 8 to 12 and she just published them on Amazon as a Kindle boxset but wants to get the audiobook version up as well. I volunteered to jump in and help since I need to know the full process for myself too! Here's what we've done so far in the Audiobook making process: STEP 1: We set up a free account at ACX.com (Audiobook Creation Exchange) STEP 2: On August 16, 2022, we uploaded a sample of the book and opened it up for voice actor auditions. STEP 3: As I prep for this podcast on September 1st, we have received a whooping 33 auditions! [Edit: now we have 37 as of Sept. 5, 2022]. Some are incredible. Others need to improve the sound quality around the set up they have. So, totally for free, we have received a range of what sounds like beginner voice actors to super professional. As a side note, you may be wondering how the voice actors get paid. You have two options: 1: You can pay upfront at a fixed price per finished audio hour (and no royalty sharing) 2: You can pay with a 50-50 royalty split on future sales (and no upfront cost for the work) STEP 4: Review the auditions and pick someone to make an offer to. This is as far as we've gotten so far, and we need help choosing! We've starred 10 of our favorites, but that's still too many to put forth when asking for feedback I think. So, I'm narrowing them down to our top 5 and will play a short sample of each coming up next in this episode! It'd be so helpful if you'd share your favorite and feedback! Be a voice casting director with us! You can send your votes and feedback by: Emailing me Laura@CopyThatPops.com Pinging me on social media – I'm all over @ LaptopLaura And if you want to grab a copy of the full 5-book set of Kid Star Squad, check it out at CopyThatPops.com/KidStarSquad which will take you to it on Amazon (it's free with Kindle Unlimited, by the way). The 6 Auditions Okay, let's take a listen to our top 6 auditions and then I'll tell you what's next on the list of to-do's for audiobook creation. Audition 1 and 2 will be reading Chapter 1. Audition 3 and 4 will be reading Chapter 2. Audition 5 and 6 will be reading Chapter 3. Listen now to the 6 auditions above or go here for the audio file with only the auditions and the book sample to read along: CopyThatPops.com/auditions — Great voice actors, right? It's so hard to pick! Part of me wants Emma to pick a female voice, but some of those male voiceover artists were fire. What should we do? Help! Email me Laura@CopyThatPops.com Ping me on social media – I'm all over @ LaptopLaura And I'll collect and tabulate the feedback to help advise Emma on the final choice. Next up in the Audiobook process? After we pick our favorite voice actor, we'll make an offer for payment – we are thinking about the upfront payment way. If he or she accepts, we have a deal and legally binding contract! Then, the voice actor, called “producer” in ACX will record and upload a 15-minute checkpoint of the audiobook for us to listen to, give feedback, and approve. Once that's done, the productor will keep going and record the full project. We can ask for up to two rounds of corrections to the finished audiobook. Then, when we're happy, we'll approve it and pay the producer! From there, it's time to make the book live to the world. ACX distributes it through Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. More on these next steps in a future podcast episode. For now, we have to settle on a producer! No matter who we choose or if you want to share your vote, I hope this episode was helpful in inspiring and/or motivating you to take action by bringing your books to life in audiobook form! Talk to you next time. Keep finding ways to write copy that pops! :) Laura
Executive and entrepreneur Atif Rafiq suggests that, in his career, he's often been at companies “too early.” For example, his foray into mobile applications actually pre-dated the iPhone. But is being ahead of your time ever really a bad thing? Atif certainly doesn't think so—especially when it comes to rewriting the rules of leadership. In his talk with Jesse, Atif reflects on his early roles as an executive at Audible (Amazon), as an entrepreneur at Covigna, and as the Chief Digital Officer at McDonald's, a first-of-its-kind position for a Fortune 500 company. He describes the challenges of finding a balance between safety and profitability at MGM Resorts during the pandemic. Please enjoy this conversation with Kathryn Korostoff and Jeffrey Henning as they tackle the question, “What did we learn (about our own skill/knowledge needs) in 2021 that we should leverage as we plan for 2022?” As Market Research & Insights professionals, what do we need to know to be effective in 2022? And what knowledge gaps exist that warrant prioritization? So, what are the hot skills for Market Researchers in 2022? In this episode, Korostoff and Henning get into the details on what they see as the most-have skills to rise to the demand of 2022. Welcome to Part 4 of our 4-part series: Prepping Your Market Research & Insights Team for 2022. Previous episodes tackled improving methodology choices, survey data quality, and WFH effectiveness. The Work from Home (WFH) phenomenon has impacted Market Researchers from two very different angles: first as employees/workers ourselves, and second as research methodologists. In this episode, the discussion tackles both: What does ongoing full or partial WFH mean for our profession, our teams, our collaborations, our career paths? What skills may need to get amped up in 2022 to be successful in a WFH-heavy profession? What have we learned about doing research on WFH topics? Are some methodologies better suited for understanding hot WFH-related research topics better than others? For example, what methodologies are best for research on what new behaviors are here to stay and which ones will likely return to pre-COVID norms? Welcome to Part 3 of our “look ahead” for 2022. In this episode Kathryn Korostoff is joined by true Research Rockstars Cindy Casper and Michelle LeGros—experienced Market Research & Insights leaders with both client-side and supplier-side roles. Both are also Research Rockstar instructors: https://training.researchrockstar.com/pages/all-instructors About This 4-part series asks the question, “What did we learn in 2021 that we should leverage as we plan for 2022?” This is a real-world, “brass tacks” look at what we, as Market Research & Insights professionals, learned about our own work in 2021. The 4-part series is being released weekly starting November 2 on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Audible (Amazon). What did we learn (about research methodology choices) in 2021 that we should leverage as we plan for 2022? What did we learn (about improving survey data quality) in 2021 that we should leverage as we plan for 2022? What did we learn (about WFH as a research topic and as it pertains to our own work/teams) in 2021 that we should leverage as we plan for 2022? What did we learn (about our own skill/knowledge needs) in 2021 that we should leverage as we plan for 2022?

The fearless and fabulous DR. The band premiered with an original catalogue of fresh, folky and soulful music. After releasing their debut EP in the fall of 2019, Vagabond Crowe began performing shows in North and South Carolina, and became known as a local band on the rise. After playing together for two years the band took a break from the stage and lead singer, Mitch Stewart, went back into the studio to create and craft a set of new songs that are set to be released as singles during 2021 and beyond. After a year away from the stage Vagabond Crowe is in the process of creating something new and true to what the heartbeat of the music is, as 2021 is a time for the stage to be set for a new era of Vagabond Crowe. She plays piano & viola, as well as touching on a few other instruments. With a variety of genres influencing her music, folk strongly resonates through her songs, inspired by artists such as John Martyn, Nick Drake, Eva Cassidy, and Damien Rice to name a few. Growing up, she played across the Orkney Islands, where she was involved widely in the music scene. Usually found next to her piano, Katie pours her heart and soul into her song-writing. We've covered this story from several angles over the last years. Turns out robots are adding more jobs than they are taking away. Robots are affected how much people get paid, not whether they have jobs. All really good, well-researched, and a little scary. Book cited: The Big Switch by Nicholas Carr. Topic 3: Turns out, Facebook CAN tweak the algorithm. Facebook has long claimed that they cannot make changes to their "news" algorithm. Specifically, they have claimed that they cannot start tweaking the viral nature of trends on their own platform. Now they are saying that they had to crank down the viral nature of some posts during the election. The goal was to diminish extreme divisiveness. It may or may not be good. But clearly they can adjust their algorithm. We discuss. https://www.theverge.com/2020/11/24/21612728/facebook-news-feed-us-election-change-mainstream-news-misinformation Another fun show!
