Steve Dennis: Leaders Leap Steve Dennis is a strategy consultant, advisor, speaker, and author focused on transformational leadership and the impact of digital disruption. He is the president of SageBerry Consulting and host of the Remarkable Retail podcast. He's the author of the book Remarkable Retail and his newest book Leaders Leap: Transforming Your Company at the Speed of Disruption*. Every leader needs to stay relevant in order to serve well. In this conversation, Steve and I explore the mindset and tactics that will help us lead in the context of an ever-changing world. Key Points Self-sufficiency is a virtue, until it's not. Learning to ask for help is a key practice for leaders. Be cautious about a deserving attitude. High expectations may be correlated with low resilience. Seek insight everywhere. It's no longer sufficient just to gain ideas from direct competitors. Turning pro means showing up and doing the work, especially when we don't feel like it. We must go through discomfort, not around it. Radical acceptance of truth will help you stay relevant in changing times. September 20, 2024 Discussion on the book "Move by Move" by Maurice Ashley by Dr. Farid Holakouee
Maurice Ashley: Move by Move Maurice Ashley is a Chess Grandmaster, an ESPN commentator, a three-time national championship coach, and an author. In 1999 he earned the title of Chess Grandmaster, making him the first Black Grandmaster in the game's history, and in 2016 he was inducted into the US Chess Hall of Fame. He's the author of Move by Move: Life Lessons on and off the Chessboard*. There was a time that you could get a degree or a certification and you've be set on your learning for awhile. Those days are long gone. With change happening at the speed of thought, we must keep improving. In this conversation, Maurice and I discuss the mindsets and tactics that will help you keep growing. Key Points Jazz artists don't think about each note, but instinctively know how to make beautiful music. The best chess players are like this. Elite performers constantly look for ways to cultivate the beginner's mindset. Chess players who pay attention to the endgame are less likely to get caught up only in the tactics. The most vulnerable time for a chess player is when they have a big lead. Poor performers avoid spending time with their mistakes. The best players learn from them through debrief. Determine in advance where you need to stay hyper-focused. Temper overconfidence by posing additional in-game challenges for yourself and your team. Maurice Ashley is a Chess Grandmaster, a chess commentator, a national championship coach, and an author. In 1999 he earned the title of Chess Grandmaster, making him the first African American Grandmaster in the game's history, and was later inducted into the US Chess Hall of Fame. His latest book is titled Move by Move: Life Lessons On and Off the Chessboard. Some interesting insights from this episode: · Going into any big moment, the best way to calm your nerves is to get into the right mindset which is that you can't be better than yourself. Don't focus on the results. Just focus on being yourself and the rest will take care of itself. · He is able to play up to ten people simultaneously while blindfolded and win each game. · It's important to cultivate a beginner's mind and approach the game as if you're viewing it for the very first time. That way you're open to seeing something new and having a fresh perspective. · Upper echelon thinking is to keep growing every day. Today you need to be a little bit better than yesterday. Your only race is against yesterday's self. · Focus often dips when you're ahead and your lowest concentration is often when you have the biggest advantage. · To stay mentally sharp and focused over the course of a prolonged game, you have to learn to continually check yourself. You have to be your own barometer. Counting breaths also helps to calm down and stay in the moment. · Retrograde analysis is envisioning a future state and then working backwards. · When conducting post mortems it's important to categorize your mistakes so you can become more self aware of the patterns behind the mistake and preempt their happening in the future. I first met Maurice Ashley in New York in 1994. He was announcing a chess tournament with all of the fervor and excitement of Marv Albert and John Madden. 30 years later, his passion for the sport is the same, perhaps greater. He's an historic figure in chess as the first African American grandmaster. But that's only a small part of Maurice's story. The game has brought him into schools around the world, preaching the love of the sport he first learned in the parks of Brooklyn. His passion for chess is limitless, initially preaching a joy of the game and then lessons beyond the board.
In this episode of the Healthy, Wealthy, and Smart podcast, Dr. Karen Litzy enjoyed speaking with the incredible Maurice Ashley, an international chess grandmaster, analyst, commentator, motivational speaker, author, and Hall of Fame inductee. Maurice highlighted the importance of resilience, learning from mistakes, and the danger of complacency. Additionally, Maurice talked about his new books, "Move by Move: Life Lessons On and Off the Chessboard" and "The Life-Changing Magic of Chess," which cater to both adults and children, respectively. Would you like to receive a daily, random quote by email from my Little Box of Quotes? https://constantine.name/lboq A long long time ago I began collecting inspirational quotes and aphorisms. Grandmaster Maurice Ashley is a man who hardly needs an introduction to the readers of Chess Life or Chess Life Online. While he is famous today for his energetic style broadcasting events for the Saint Louis Chess Club, Ashley has been a giant of American chess for many years now. He is the first Grandmaster of African descent, has been a successful scholastic coach, and he organized some of the most lucrative and interesting large Swiss tournaments in American history. Because his career has been so varied and spanned so much of recent chess history, we thought Maurice Ashley would be the perfect person to write our October cover article on International Master Abhimanyu Mishra, the youngest IM in the world. His story is utterly fascinating. Ashley knocked the assignment out of the park, putting young Abhi's story into the proper context, and painting a much fuller picture of the role played by his family in his success than has been previously shown. Our interview, recorded on September 29, 2020, tries to cover the full range of Ashley's history and accomplishments. I had a great time recording it, and I want to thank Maurice for taking an hour of his time to talk to me for this podcast.

The Chess Scene from The Wire is still one of my favorite scenes of all-times because it's so symbolic to life. And that had me to reflect to an interview myself, D.D. Turner, & Stats formerly TCOHHL Radio had with Chess Grandmaster Maurice Ashley four years ago and we discussed his passion to be the best chess player in world. It's no secret, to be successful in life employing strategy is imperative. More than proving to be a formidable tool against those inevitable obstacles, it offers organization amidst the ever-present chaos. For context, let's consider the discipline of a chess strategist/player. The absence of emotion veils the calculations of the mind; that strategic design that is ultimately disclosed upon the surface of a mere checkered pattern with monarchical pieces. For all intents and purposes, the game of chess is life's simulator. By way of opponent intent and the assessment of it, your willingness to enforce strategy supports self-sustainability, and if executed correctly, triumph over your worthy adversary. Just ask Maurice Ashley – chess strategist/aficionado and the first African American to receive the “Grandmaster” title from the World Chess Federation, FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs).

I am off this week, but I have some awesome bonus content for you. Have a listen to the January 7, 2004 interview that Fred Wilson conducted with the now-deceased, legendary chess trainer, author, and player IM Mark Dvoretsky. This is one of the many great historical chess interviews that I am posting on the Perpetual Chess Patreon page for those who donate $3.50 per month or more. Fred WIlson's archive will also feature old interviews with GMs Andy Soltis, Arthur Bisguier, Maurice Ashley, Lubomir Kavalek and many more. Here are a few of the questions that Fred asked of IM Dvoretsky in their conversation: Did Mark agree with GM Lev Alburt's suggestion that Boris Spassky had more chess talent than Bobby Fischer as a youth? How many positions did IM Dvoretsky have in his legendary file of positions for titled students to study? What were some of his favorite chess books of all time (besides his own)? What did he think of Peter Svidler's prospects of becoming World Champion in 2004? Was there any other young talent he thought might ascend to the highest title? So much chess history is shared within this 90 minute conversation that it is difficult for me to do it justice in a summary. Just listen and enjoy! The Perpetual chess t-shirt and hoodie sale ends on December 4- get one here while you can.
