The untold story of New Zealand's mass timber revolution unfolds as architectural designer Bernie from RM Designs and structural engineer Julian from ENGCO share their remarkable 10-year journey pioneering sustainable construction methods. What began as a response to the challenges of post-earthquake Christchurch has evolved into over 50 successful projects that demonstrate how thoughtful collaboration can transform an industry.Their partnership reveals a refreshing counterpoint to the stereotypical architect-engineer rivalry. Instead, they've embraced a "no one of us is as smart as all of us" philosophy that brings contractors, manufacturers, and consultants to the table from day one. This early collaboration has been their secret weapon, allowing them to optimize designs for constructability while solving complex problems around acoustics, fire safety, and structural efficiency in mass timber buildings. The conversation takes us through their breakthrough project—the Bealey Backpackers—where they reduced foundation costs from 20% to just 7-8% of the budget by leveraging timber's lightweight properties. We hear how their work with Housing New Zealand became a watershed moment, as they meticulously documented mass timber's advantages against traditional construction across more than 20 performance indicators. From three-story walk-ups completed in just 8.5 months to innovative projects like the Pounamu Pathway with its distinctive "America's Cup sail" design, their work spans everyday residential buildings to iconic cultural landmarks. What makes this episode particularly valuable is their honest assessment of challenges facing mass timber adoption. Despite proven successes, every project still requires alternative solution documentation due to building code limitations. They've also evolved from timber purism to embrace hybrid approaches that pragmatically combine materials for optimal performance. Their parting wisdom? Understanding manufacturing capabilities from the outset is crucial—know what can be built before designing it.Whether you're an architect, engineer, builder, or simply passionate about sustainable construction, this conversation offers invaluable insights from pioneers who've learned through trial and error so you don't have to. Ready to rethink how we design and construct buildings? Ian Rapley's Green Star Japan: Esperanto and the International Language Question, 1880-1945 (U Hawaii Press, 2024) is a sociopolitical history of the “planned” language of Esperanto in the Japanese Empire. Esperanto was invented in the nineteenth century to address the problem of international communication. This was an issue of great and growing interest to various groups within the burgeoning Japanese Empire, and Rapley shows that Japanese Esperanto aficionados and advocates could be found working both with the League of Nations and the Soviet Union, and were active in cities and the countryside working through questions of language, identity, modernity, and communication through and around the medium of Esperanto. Sabanto: https://sabantoag.com/FoA 241: From Drives to Driverless with Craig Rupp of SabantoI'm really glad to get Craig Rupp back on the show today. Some of you might remember his interview on episode 241, where Craig shared the incredible journey of building 640 Labs which he sold to the Climate Corp and became the FieldView Drive. At that time, we also talked about his newest venture, Sabanto, which is bringing autonomy to agriculture. Since that episode over three years ago, Craig and the team at Sabanto have evolved their offering from autonomy as a service to a kit that allows dealers and farmers to convert the equipment they already have to include autonomous capabilities. Along with that, they offer a service for remote operating and monitoring, which kind of blows my mind. Craig is hiring a team of remote tractor drivers to monitor several autonomous tractors at once, and we'll talk a lot about that in today's episode. Sabanto has also found an interesting niche in sod farmers. They work with farmers across basically all crops, but the amount of passes these sod farmers have to make in a given year, makes an offering like Sabanto has really compelling. This is also an episode about the evolution of on-farm autonomy and what the future might look like as adoption continues to grow. For a refresher on Craig's bio: Raised on a farm in Iowa, Craig Rupp started his career in 1988 as a hardware engineer at Motorola, designing and developing the first GSM and Iridium mobile stations and John Deere in 2002, developing the Starfire receiver and Greenstar display. In 2012, Craig founded 640 Labs, envisioning a simple iPad as a data collection and monitoring device for agriculture. Acquired by Monsanto in 2014, he made his FieldView Drive one of the most ubiquitous and low-cost data collection devices in agriculture. In 2018, Craig founded Sabanto, a company that provides autonomous solutions for agriculture. He was the first to autonomously plant a farmer's field in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, Texas, and Indiana.I really enjoy whenever I get a chance to talk to Craig, his intelligence and real world experience comes through in the wisdom that he shares.

Today's guest is Chef Jess Murphy. Originally from New Zealand, Jess moved to Ireland and in 2011 opened the doors to Kai, the award-winning restaurant she runs with her husband, Dave Murphy. Because of the sustainability programs at Kai, it's the only restaurant in Ireland to have been awarded the Michelin Green Star. Jess is also passionate about helping refugees in Ireland record their food stories, and she has been recognized for the work she does with the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Jess was in New York last week because she was this year's featured chef at the annual Kerrygold St. Patrick's Day luncheon. She made a beautiful meal with seasonal produce, and of course, lots of butter and cheese. Thank you to OpenTable, Johnnie Walker, and to Walmart for supporting our Women's History Month spotlight. Interview with Alex Pernin, CEO and Kevin MacLean, CIO of Star Royalties Ltd.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/star-royalties-strr-first-mover-originating-carbon-offset-royalties-1670Recording date: 23rd January 2024Star Royalties (TSXV: STRR) offers a compelling mix of deeply undervalued existing assets plus high-growth potential in the booming carbon credit market. Despite flying under the radar, this royalty company delivers an attractive value proposition for investors seeking commodities exposure coupled with steady cash flows.Green Star Valuation Disconnect Represents Near-Term WindfallThe real prize lies in Star's wholly-owned Green Star Royalties subsidiary, focused on financing high-quality carbon offset projects. A recent $21M strategic investment from energy giant Cenovus values Green Star at $82M - 3x Star's entire current market cap.Star Royalties retains 45.9% ownership of Green Star, presenting an enormous upside as the market eventually re-rates the stock to match this appraised value.Major Partners Validate Business ModelAlongside Cenovus Energy, mining leader Agnico Eagle owns 26% of Green Star after conducting extensive due diligence. Their backing signals confidence in management's proven pedigree and the tremendous market potential as carbon credit demand accelerates.First-Mover Advantage in High-Growth MarketGreen Star deploys capital into agriculture, forestry and clean technology projects generating certified carbon offsets. With a specialty in high-integrity credits and a North American focus, Green Star dominates a fragmented space poised for massive growth.Their low-cost production model also ensures strong profitability even if market carbon prices decline substantially from ~$50 per ton currently.Precious Metals Exposure Provides Asset BackingStar Royalties retains royalties on advanced exploration-stage gold assets plus plans to spin these out upon achieving fair value. This provides stable backing plus optionality for precious metals upside.Compelling Risk-Reward for Growth and IncomeFor investors, Star Royalties offers a compelling mix of deep value (Green Star disconnect), strategic partners validating the opportunity, exposure to booming carbon credit demand, inflation protection from carbon pricing/gold, experienced and capable leadership, and planned Green Star IPO unlocking further growth funding. It's a high-upside play merging growth and income for a commodity market recovery. Hotelliketju GreenStarin yrittäjä Kristian Ikonen on kirjaimellisesti kasvanut rooliinsa. Upea tarina, kannattaa kuunnella! Lisää aiheesta: www.greenstar.fi

Is it possible to create an industrial workplace that workers want to be in? Or even an industrial workplace which sets a bold new standard in sustainability? While office, residential and retail spaces were the first property types to experience the real benefits of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) and placemaking initiatives, the industrial & logistics space is now a major investment grade asset class which is also beginning to inherit the same sustainability criteria. It's a strong indication that industrial property has changed and is no longer just about employees arriving to work in a shed and then clocking off. In our latest ESG in Conversation series, CBRE's Pacific Head of ESG, Su-Fern Tan, talks exclusively to Andrew Thai, National Sustainability Manager for Frasers Property Industrial, and Tamara Williams, Head of ESG for Altis. In this insightful talk, the trio explore the real-time sustainability strategies being used by today's leading developers to help future proof their portfolios while showcasing the unique ROI opportunities that innovation in this space can bring. With analysis based around The YARDS project, the first industrial estate to ever achieve a Green Star Communities rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, the experts will specifically look at: What this industrial project did to earn this rating The challenges of pursuing the maximum Green Star rating for industrial assets The hidden benefits of providing workers with amenities and a sense of community Identifying the value of this rating system and the value of social impact for industrial assets Which stakeholders are demanding this radical shift in industrial assets If you have any questions from this episode or property topics that you'd like CBRE to answer in future episodes, please email us at: talkingproperty@cbre.com.

Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard has unveiled details of a number of new Parliamentary buildings which will be erected to house MPs and ministers.Three new buildings are scheduled to be completed by 2026 – but the price tag for the projects has not yet been revealed.Speaking to media this afternoon, however, Mallard said he hoped the bill would be less than $250 million. That is more than double the estimated cost of an earlier proposal for a new building and re-development of an existing building that was put up by former Speaker David Carter in 2016.A six-storey building will be constructed on Museum Street – right next to Parliament – and will house a multitude of offices as well as select committee rooms.Mallard also announced a new executive wing annexe will be constructed for ministers. The old earthquake-prone press gallery building at the far end of the Parliamentary precinct will be demolished to make way for the extra ministerial officesA two-storey building will also be constructed for parliamentary security. The money for the new builds has not yet been revealed but Mallard said the funding has been sought so it would come out of next year's Budget. In a statement, Mallard acknowledged that the plans would require "significant investment"."However, we must look at the long term," he said."Ultimately, this is the right and responsible course of action to ensure our nation's Parliament is supported to operate efficiently and effectively for many years to come."The goal is for all the new buildings to be completed and ready for use following the 2026 election.Mallard had considered using the new "fast track" provisions –designed to boost construction work as part of the Covid-19 recovery - to consent it.But after discussions with the Minister of Finance and Environment Minister David Parker, decided that was inappropriate.NZ First has twice scuppered plans for new buildings on Parliament's grounds.Mallard said if NZ First got back in in 2023 and demanded the project be dropped, he would put a picture of former NZ First MP Shane Jones on the side of the unfinished building. In a statement, Mallard said it was his firm belief that this strategy needed to be revisited."We must take this opportunity to ensure that the precinct is well-positioned to support Parliament as it evolves over the next 50-100 years."Mallard said this has been agreed to by all political parties."For many years now, it has been clear that current accommodation on the parliamentary precinct is not fit for purpose and can no longer effectively support a modern, accessible Parliament."He said the move makes absolute sense financially and logistically.Speaking to media on their way into caucus meetings this morning, a number of MPs were asked what they would like to see included in Mallard's designs.National's Matt Doocey came up with the idea of a group hug room while Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson suggested Jacuzzis for the Press Gallery.Museum St BuildingThis will be built on top of what is now car parks next to Parliament House.Although Mallard is still applying for resource consent, he said it will have a modern design, which will be "sympathetic to the surrounding environment"."We are not seeking to create a landmark."The six-story building will have a direct link to Parliament House, will have a Green Star rating of six and will offer a "high degree of flexibility".New ministerial officesThis will replace the old press gallery offices, which were vacated in 2017 due to earthquake strength issues. The plan is for that building to be knocked down and to be replaced by the new structure. It will be a three-story building, complementary to the existing Executive wing, with a link to Parliament House. It will also have a Green Star rating of 6.Security buildingThis will be two stories and is proposed to be built at Ballantrae Place entrance. It will accommodate the current "secure deliveries" functions, th...

Rosheen McGuckian had spent a number of years leading the Irish operations of a US multinational when she decided it was time to join an indigenous Irish company. Focussing in on sectors where she could leave a tangible legacy, Rosheen wrote down a list of six successful Irish multinationals for whom Ireland was ‘the centre of the universe' from a decision-making perspective, and started to knock on doors. One of those doors was NTR. Established in 1978 to build Ireland's first toll bridge, NTR became a pioneer of renewable energy in 1999 and has been investing in sustainable infrastructure ever since. Today, the company creates enough power for 250,000 households. As CEO of NTR, Rosheen is pursuing growth opportunities for the company internationally, finding long term investment projects on behalf of pension funds and insurance companies. In this episode of The EY Podcast: CEO Outlook Series, NTR CEO Rosheen McGuckian joins host Richard Curran to talk about formative years in Antrim, Dublin and Saudi Arabia; leadership positions in GE Money, ESB, and Greenstar; and a driving an Irish company's development of the international renewable energy sector. Areas covered include: · Growing up in Co Antrim and Saudi Arabia, and what Rosheen learned about leadership from those experiences. · How a career in PR, working with industry leaders including Bill O'Herlihy and Fintan Drury, taught Rosheen about powerful communication and change management. · The opportunities for Ireland in offshore wind energy, and the obstacles that may be met along the way. · How cutting-edge technology is enabling virtual site visits during COVID-19. · Rosheen's business mantra, favourite book, and the other leaders she admires the most.
Here’s the Ithaca Minute from 14850 Today for September 5th. The City of Ithaca made on-street parking and the first three hours in city-owned garages free this March, and resumed charging parking fees at reduced rates in June. Next Tuesday, September 8, the City says they’re returning to standard on-street parking rates and eliminating the temporary free first hour of parking in City-owned garages. The hourly parking rate is $1.50 for parking at paystations or the remaining coin-only “lollipop” style parking meters in a few parts of town. Parking in the City-owned garages costs $1 per hour, with a daily maximum of $10 at downtown garages and $15 in Collegetown. Each spring, students and others leaving town leave behind tons of items they don’t need, and volunteers collect it for resale every August to raise money for local charities and keep reusable items out of the waste stream. Most years, Cornell hosts an annual Dump & Run Sale in August, but this year due to COVID concerns, the sale is being handled off campus by Finger Lakes ReUse. The sale is Friday through Sunday, September 4-6, at the former GreenStar classroom building at 700 West Buffalo Street. And two Ithaca [...]

Here’s the Ithaca Minute from 14850 Today for May 15th. The Tompkins County Health Department says they’ve “received notification that a GreenStar employee tested positive for COVID-19. The individual worked multiple shifts at the GreenStar location at 770 Cascadilla Street this weekend.” GreenStar’s new flagship Ithaca store opened just last week. Health Department officials say customers who went inside the store during the employee’s three shifts could have been exposed: Friday, May 8th, 7am-3:15pm Saturday, May 9th, 7am-3:15pm Monday, May 11th, 10:30am-7pm. If you shopped at GreenStar at those times the Health Department suggests you get tested at the Cayuga Health Sampling Site, which is open extended hours Friday, May 15th, 9am-4pm. The Friends of Stewart Park will be giving out free cloth face masks to those who need them this Saturday, May 16, from 1-3pm. They quote Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s statement: “Why wear a mask? Out of respect. When you wear a mask you are saying, I respect my neighbors. When you wear a mask you are saying, I respect nurses and doctors. When you wear a mask you are saying, I respect other people. We all need to show respect to one another in difficult times. Wearing [...]

Brisbane’s 25 King is a timber building pushing boundaries in construction, sustainability and indoor environment qualityWhat goes into a timber building? What’s the difference between timber and cross-laminated timber? And will we start seeing more wooden buildings? The latest episode of AIRAH on Air is a visit to 25 King, Australia’s largest and tallest engineered timber office building. It was developed and built by Lendlease as part of a continuing $2.9 billion regeneration of Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds, in the inner suburb of Bowen Hills. The project featured ambitious rating design objectives, including a WELL Platinum Core and Shell rating and 6 star Design and As Built V1.1 Green Star ratings.Following their keynote address at the Future of HVAC 2019, we speak to Danni Roberts, Affil.AIRAH, and Joel Fernandes of Aurecon, an engineering consultancy firm, on what it was like to not only deliver the structural engineering design, building services and ESD on the project, but also now occupy the building as its main tenant. This episode is an adaptation of the April 2019 cover story (“King in the north”) of Ecolibrium, AIRAH’s industry journal. Over the last 20 years sustainability has been a massive driver for developments in building services engineering, in Australia this has been, at least in part, driven by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and their Green Star tools. As we move towards a zero carbon future we will increasingly rely on how to assess building sustainability and how we can support those that will create this change. This month Talking Buildings sits down with Romilly Madew of the GBCA to discuss what drives her focus on sustainability, what the future holds as she moves into her new role at Infrastructure Australia and what advice she would give to the next generation of sustainability professionals.Madew has led the Green Building Council of Australia since 2006 and has been an integral figure in Australia’s sustainable building movement. She is recognised globally as a leader in the construction industry and is an experienced CEO in strategy, governance and policy development as demonstrated by her recently announced appointment as CEO of Infrastructure Australia. As perhaps the busiest person in the building sector she is a member of the federal government’s Cities Reference Group, former Deputy President and Member of the Executive Committee of the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council, Independent Chair of the Currawong State Park Advisory Board, a member of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority; Chief Executive Women; and Surf Life Saving Foundation boards and President Bilgola Surf Life Saving Club.
Is Passive House necessary in Australia? This is a question many ask, because they believe our climate is too mild to necessitate the Passive House approach. Yet, Clare Parry disagrees. She is a Director and Principal at Grun Consulting, and is a Certified Passive House Certifier and Trainer. Clare was also one of the founding members of the Australian Passive House Association. Its vision is to lead change by educating, promoting, and supporting the delivery of Certified Passive House buildings in Australia. Clare is the Certifier for the Owl Woods Passive House project - so it’ll be her job to provide the tick of approval that everyone else has done their jobs, and the home can actually be certified as a Passive House. Clare however, fulfills many roles when it comes to sustainable design in Australia, and whenever I researched or talked about Passive House - it was Clare Parry’s name that came up. I’m really excited you’re going to meet her through this episode, and hear about her experience with Passive House, and really helping it get traction in Australia. SHOW NOTES: Meet Clare Parry from Grun Consulting. Clare has had a lifelong interest in best practice building design, involving a holistic approach to achieve sustainable measures and provide a better option in the longer term, both for the client & the environment. Her focus is on building performance, and she works extensively with the Passivhaus standard. Her work as a sustainability consultant and mechanical engineer has involved experience as a Certified Passivhaus Designer, Trainer and Building Certifier, LEED AP, Green Star AP, WELL AP, NABERS and CBD Assessor. In 2011 Clare founded the Australian Passive House Association and has been involved as a Director until late 2017. She is one of the first Certified Passivhaus Designers in Australia, and one of only two Passivhaus Certifiers. She is a certified Passivhaus trainer as well and you can often see her speak at national and international conferences. Clare is a Director and Principal at Grün Consulting. Grün specialises in delivering high performance buildings. They deliver all aspects of Environmentally Sustainable Design consulting, specialising in Passive House (Passivhaus) from design through to certification. They are advocates for Passivhaus, for Net Zero, and experts in town planning, multiple rating tools including LEED, Green Star and the Living Building Challenge, and energy ratings including Carbon Neutral, NABERS & CBD. In this episode, I ask Clare ... What made you become interested in Passive House? You've worked for some time (and continue to work) as a sustainability consultant in a range of accreditation systems like LEED, Greenstar, WELL, etc. How does Passive House sit in relation to this? You founded the Australian Passive House Association (APHA) in 2011. What compelled you to do that? What's the APHA's role? You are performing the role of Building Certifier on the Owl Woods Passive House project. Can you describe what's involved in that? I read an article of yours on Linkedin ... where you spoke about industry talking about the difficulty of getting the consumer engaged in the idea of sustainability. You said "The issue is not actually about engagement. That implies that people are choosing alternatives when the options are on the table, but the truth is they really have no idea what’s possible." And then you spoke about our responsibility to educate - which is what Undercover Architect is all about. How would you like to see homeowners going about really moving the needle on Passive House and its adoption in Australia? What would you tell them to do to feel more confident to pursue this for their projects when opposition might be budget, or it being too hard, etc? As Clare mentioned, the Australian Passive House Association is an incredibly useful resource for you if you’re wanting to embark on the Passive House journey, so check out the show notes for a link to find them. A word of warning though … I’m finding that the more people I speak to about Passive House, I find they started their journey with an interest, and go so passionate about it, they’ve gone onto be certified! Not only professionals but homeowners as well! Who knows what learning and opportunity the Passive House journey might open for you hey? Listen to the episode now. This episode is brought to you by my online course “How to Get it Right in Your Reno or New Home”. Avsnitt 46! Fyra, sexa! Sinnessjukt! Implantat? CGI? Cruise dementerar. Men är det the real deal? Det är det som är frågan. Vi har såklart också en ny omgång av "Gissa filmen" samt "Gissa karaktären". Exploding the Phone (Grove Press) In EXPLODING THE PHONE, Phil Lapsley illuminates the forgotten history of the proto-hackers, tinkerers, and pranksters who turned AT&T's telephone system into their electronic playground. Before smartphones and iPads, before the Internet or the personal computer, a misfit group of technophiles, blind teenagers, hippies, and outlaws figured out how to hack the world's largest machine: the telephone system. By the middle of the twentieth century the telephone system had grown into something extraordinary, a web of cutting-edge switching machines and human operators that linked together millions of people like never before. But the network had a billion-dollar flaw, and once people discovered it, things would never be the same. Phil Lapsley's EXPLODING THE PHONE traces the birth of long-distance communication and the telephone, the rise of AT&T's monopoly, the creation of the sophisticated machines that made it all work, and the discovery of Ma Bell's Achilles' heel. Lapsley expertly weaves together the clandestine network of “phone phreaks” who broke into the system to satisfy their curiosity, the mobsters who exploited its flaws to avoid the feds, and the counterculture movement that argued you should rip off the phone company to fight against the war in Vietnam. AT&T responded with “Greenstar,” an unprecedented project that would ultimately tap some thirty-three million telephone calls and record 1.5 million of them. The FBI fought back, too, especially when a phone phreak showed a confidential informant how he could remotely eavesdrop on FBI calls. Phone phreaking exploded into the popular culture, with famous actors, musicians, and investors caught with “blue boxes,” many of them built by two young phone phreaks named Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Soon, the phone phreaks, the feds, and the phone company were at war. Based on original interviews and declassified documents, and featuring a forward by phone phreak turned Apple Computers co-founder Steve Wozniak, EXPLODING THE PHONE is a captivating, ground-breaking work about an important part of our cultural and technological history. "The definitive account of the first generation of network hackers – the scruffy rebels who first plumbed the secrets of the global telephone network, and accidentally earned the wrath of everyone from AT&T to the FBI. At turns a technological love story, a counter cultural history and a generation-spanning epic, Exploding the Phone is obsessively researched and told with wit and clarity. It captures a moment in time that might otherwise have been lost forever." —Kevin Poulsen, news editor of Wired.com and author of Kingpin Phil Lapsley is a cofounder of two high-tech companies, and a former consultant at McKinsey & Company.
