February is National Heart Month. This year's theme is “Know Your Numbers, Own Your Heart” which emphasizes the importance of understanding and managing key cardiovascular risk factors, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. Cardiovascular disease, or heart disease, is the leading cause of death in the United States and around the world. K-State Research and Extension aging specialist, Erin Martinez, says heart disease leads all causes of death in the state. However, she says there are steps we can take – at any age – that can help reduce the risk for heart disease. Sound Living is a weekly public affairs program addressing issues related to families and consumers. It is hosted by Jeff Wichman. Each episode shares the expertise of K-State specialists in fields such as child nutrition, food safety, adult development and aging, youth development, family resource management, physical fitness and more. Send comments, questions or requests for copies of past programs to ksrenews@ksu.edu. K‑State Research and Extension is a short name for the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service, a program designed to generate and distribute useful knowledge for the well‑being of Kansans. Supported by county, state, federal and private funds, the program has county Extension offices, experiment fields, area Extension offices and regional research centers statewide. Its headquarters is on the K‑State campus in Manhattan.

Did you know that February is National Heart Month? To help remember, just think of a HEART for Valentine's Day! I am so thrilled to welcome back Pediatric Cardiologist, David Weiland. From *Congenital heart defects (which heart complications baby is born with) And then *Acquired heart defects come later in life. It is up to us as parents to KNOW THE SIGNS. It also up to the parents to TAKE your child to their Well Visits with your primary pediatrician. That is the only way to learn about the serious complexities of the beautiful heart that lay inside your baby. Dr. David really sheds light on this crucial topic and his insights are VERY appreciated! Then later, we welcome 2 of my most favorite people back. Married couple, John and Kari Turner. They are incredibly inspirational and I so hope you find this interview as inspiring as I do.John, an actor went to NYC and was almost killed by a mugging. It left him with brain damage and couldn't walk for a long time. He then pivoted to writing about his experience in a humorous way. His book, Dairy of an Angry Gimp ignited his love for writing. He met his wife, Kari at a convention learning about handicapped Americans. Kari has Multiple Sclerosis and they never looked back. In fact, they looked to the future and today, they are raising the 2 most beautiful little girls. Defying the odds every single day. Love yall! Valentine's Day is upon us, and as I have been working on my own heart this year, it's a perfect time of year, with National Heart Month and Valentine's Day, to share with you.We are created in His image, and God is love. Life will throw us curveballs, our hearts can grow weeds and choke out the intended beauty He Created for us. He desires for our hearts to be aligned with His. And if you have ever been in love or in love, then you know that butterfly feeling you get in your heart when you fall in love and the other person says” Be Mine Let's dive in to renew our hearts, and when He moves within our hearts, we can breathe easier, our hearts, minds, and souls feel peaceful, and we can echo the words of love in all that we do. When our hearts get weary and we are mentally and physically exhausted, our hearts reflect that in our words, actions, thoughts, and the way we love those around us.
Welcome to February 25, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate healthy hearts and avoiding the heat in the kitchen. Valentine's Day has come and gone, but there's still time to celebrate someone who deserves your attention: you! February is National Heart Month and this is the perfect time to take a few small steps that can make a big impact. Speaking of steps, it takes as little as 30 minutes of exercise, five times per week to jumpstart your overall well being. Learning about heart healthy foods can help you celebrate every day because even swapping out some of the junk for delicious healthy food can make a world of difference. The key is understanding that your small positive choices add up and believing that you are worth it! If you are ordering clam chowder today you might want to take note of where you're dining. If you happen to be in New York, for example, don't even think about ordering the cream based kind. You see Boston and New York have a rivalry that dates back to the days of colonization, and this extends to the world of soup. New England clam chowder is a rich, cream based soup made with potatoes, onions, and pork fat. The Manhattan version is tomato based. They are equally delicious, but don't tell that to any New Englanders. The region is so against the Manhattan recipe that someone once introduced a bill in the Maine legislature to ban the use of tomatoes in chowder. On National Clam Chowder Day, enjoy a delicious bowl of this seafood favorite, but watch out for the hot controversy. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. February is National Heart Month, including Valentine's Day. What better time to talk about adding heart to our relationships. Host Deborah Rozman's guest this month is Dr. Lise Janelle, coach and author of Conversations with the Heart and You are Loved, and a member of the Transformational Leadership Council. Lise will share how she works with clients to connect with the power of their heart to heal relationships and the importance of leading with the heart to create successful relationships. Deborah will talk about two HeartMath keys for creating deeper heart connection and improving relationships: Deep heart listening – Listening from your heart without interruption. Listening from a place of genuine care, even if the issues aren't yet resolved, can provide tremendous release.Compassionate latitude – Having compassion for another's experience and what they may be feeling without judging Compassion helps raise the vibration of the individual and collective environment. It helps us connect with our higher reasoning capacity to make smarter choices while managing the infectious waves of stress and insecurity that are on the rise. Latitude is an attitude that includes qualities such as being less critical and more patient and tolerant with each other yet not having to agree with or condone another's views or actions. We'll close with a heart-focused meditation to amplify our hearts connections and re-energize our commitments to increasing our compassionate latitude and deep heart listening in our relationships.
