404: Bright Spots in Beer's Economic Data with Contributing Editor Kate Bernot

Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine Podcast

Earlier this week, our Industry All-Access (https://brewingindustryguide.com/subscription/) subscribers received in their email inbox this week's subscriber-exclusive article that Kate reported, parsing the latest industry economic data but reading beyond the surface for a deeper look at what's really going on. We've all read the hyperbolic clickbait articles out there about craft beer's demise, and for the first time in almost twenty years, we saw a net decline in operating breweries in the United States last year. But at the same time, we've been hearing anecdotally from a number of brewers such as Neil Fisher of WeldWerks, in episode 400, that they were growing despite the significant headwinds. This cognitive dissonance got us thinking about how data purport to tell certain truths, but that “truth” is limited by the nature of how data are collected. Craft beer in the United States is both big and small, but our primary sources of data address only the biggest channels of the craft-beer business, leading to distortions in perception that could potentially have damaging effects for craft beer as a whole. With that in mind, Kate sought out some answers to the questions we had—does this meta-narrative we've been reading have truth to it, does it accurately describe the reality that craft brewers are facing, do other data that suggest different or more varied truths, and what can we take away to build a fuller picture of the current state of craft beer? Fluffernutter and Oreo Marshmallow pastry stouts. Kettle sours brewed with "obscene amounts" of fruit. A cream cheese rangoon gose. Depending on your level of curiosity and adventurousness, these beers may sound exciting or challenging, but they also have two things in common: They've been made by Colorado's WeldWerks Brewing and they're fun beers made with serious intent. In this episode, we get into some of the technical ideas, philosophies, and search for dialed-in joy with Skip Schwartz, WeldWerks' head brewer and Neil Fisher, founder and owner of the company. What makes brewing and beer fun these days? There are lots of answers, and as you'll hear both explain, it could be from the never-ending tweaks to make a beer as perfect as possible or finding ways to connect with new drinkers who would otherwise turn away from a beer. Some of the more wild beers created by WeldWerks have gotten attention over the years, but it's their flagship hazy IPA, Juicy Bits, that put this brewery on the map and has allowed WeldWerks to expand into 26 different markets this year. The runaway success of Juicy Bits has helped the business gain notoriety beyond Colorado, build out its brewhouse, and set a goal of modest growth as many companies in craft beer are focused on just staying flat with their production. So, maybe you've tried some of WeldWerks' outlandish beers at their taproom or during a major industry event like the Great American Beer Festival, or maybe you've had their signature IPA and one of its variants. Allow Skip and Neil to give you some background on what it means to connect with drinkers today and learn how their approach to beer is setting them up for 2024 and beyond.

These poor financial decisions were a result of his immature grandiosity and poor daily habits. At the same time Neil found himself divorced and completely out of shape. Neil knows that every problem under the Sun has the same singular source - conflict or flaws within the mind; and he realized that his own mess was a result of flawed character.Neil eventually surmounted each one of these challenges and resolved his internal division by unifying his mind and body by bridging the gap between the conscious and the subconscious to yield the Ultra conscious. The Ultra conscious is the unborn entity with our highest and best self that we are all being called to become. Letting go of our ego control and allowing the source to flow through us.During this content-rich call, Neil reveals the process he walks you through to uncover your true individuality and strength; including how to become free in body mind and spirit no matter your circumstances. To learn more about the topics discussed, or to contact Neil directly, click the link below.Disclosure of Material Connection: This is a “sponsored post.” My Future Business is disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Colin Jones and partner Neil Fisher founded WeldWerks Brewing Company in 2014 in a long-vacant property just off Highway 85 in Greeley. Neil had been a talented homebrewer for years, and Colin was the Director of Technology at Flood and Peterson Insurance prior to the founding.  Soon, both were full-time and more at Weldwerks, and they buckled up for a high-growth journey from there - growing production and revenues at an average rate of over 100% per year!  An early focus on systems and processes built the foundation for that growth, and represents well Colin's special sauce throughout his career.  Colin's entrepreneurial journey started early, with a computer sales and service company called PC Pros in Wichita, Kansas while he was still in college.  After a 3 year run the market had changed, Dell had arisen as a powerful force in the industry, and Colin exited the business and moved into his professional career as a Systems Administrator for IMA Insurance in Denver, and later to Flood and Peterson in Northern Colorado.  As a Director in the firm, Colin was at the table for all technology decisions, but also came to understand the entire client journey, and built a comprehensive understanding of the business model.  He applied those skills and learned many more at WeldWerks, has transitioned out of the company and is investigating his next adventure.  Do you love beer, business, and people? - then you'll love this episode, and I hope you'll tune in for my conversation with Colin Jones, and share it with your beer-loving friends! Episode Sponsor: InMotion, providing next-day delivery for local businesses. Six Bridges Brewing celebrates 2nd anniversary as they eye expansion Just ahead of the kickoff for the 2nd Anniversary month Six Bridges Brewing's Clay Gridley joined us the studio for this week's show. Clay is one half of the father and son team behind Six Bridges, dad Charles Gridley makes up the other half.  A Georgia Tech grad, Charles enjoyed homebrewing in his spare time as a chemical engineer and notes his engineer background brings valuable experience to the team.  Clay took some time off to be a professional ski bum in Colorado before becoming a firefighter.  He enjoyed his homebrewing as well and the pair often talked about opening a brewery one day. In 2018 they made it happen with their opening in Johns Creek, GA.  The initial plan was to never brew the same beer twice but after the overwhelming popularity of some of their inaugural beers they decided it's OK to have a few staples.  Medlock IPA and their Pink Guava Sour Continuum are always favorites. We talk with Clay about how things are going working with his dad, the pros and cons, and whether they compliment or contrast each other. (Hint, it's both.)  We also discuss growth at their current location as well as plans for additional taprooms in the future, and we get the rundown on the special brews planned for their anniversary month. WeldWerks Brewing has way too many barrels We last talked with WeldWerks Brewing in early 2019 as Jake Goodman and Neil Fisher joined us on the show.  This week, we catch up with them again as CEO Colin Jones and Innovation and Wood Cellar Lead Skip Schwartz join us. We're big fans of WeldWerks and I don't think I've had a beer from them I didn't enjoy.  They're most known for their Juicy Bits IPA but they brew amazing sours and stouts as well.  Just like us, they're fans of that long boil, with some stouts boiling for a day and a half or more.  The flavor and viscosity of these beers is hard to match with weak little 1-2 hour boils. The brewery has kept up its aggressive release schedule, with five new beers debuting this week.  Schwartz helps keep things fresh and exciting with new brews, but also looks at the processes to continuously improve there as well.  The barrel program has grown well beyond their initial intentions and they currently have some pretty amazing barrels (Birthday Bourbon, anyone?) with beer soaking up all the goodness. Jones talks to us some about his approach as CEO and focusing on the "us" much more than the "me."  He strives to build a strong team and let them do what they are good at.  For his efforts he was recognized with the Titan 100 award this year, recognizing influential CEOs in Colorado. Whatever he's doing, it seems to be working. Visit WeldWerks Brewing 508 8th Avenue, Greeley, CO  80631 3043 W. Matt Brown was a lawyer before founding his brewery.  We've mentioned before how strange it is that so many attorneys go on to open breweries.  We should take a head count... maybe start a club. Brown opened Tombstone in 2016, bringing in Weedy Weidenthal (formerly of Huntsville, AL's Blue Pants Brewery) to be his head brewer.  The pair brews up a variety of hoppy and barrel-aged beers, and has a pretty extensive wild ale program.  On its best day, Tombstone has a population of about 1,300.  However, the town is the 2nd most popular tourist destination in the state, just behind the Grand Canyon. Beer, cheese, and baseball legends with AleSmith's Peter Zien We caught AleSmith Brewing owner and CEO Peter Zien right after his return (and medal win) at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver.  Zien serves as a judge at the beer competition where a record number of beers were presented this year.  AleSmith was founded in 1995 with Zien purchasing the brewery in 2002.  The brewery has grown a lot in that time and boasts one of California's largest tasting rooms. After purchasing the brewery, Zien tells us he missed homebrewing.  He's tried many hobbies since then including curing olives, candle and soapmaking, and cheesemaking.  The cheesemaking stuck and CheeseSmith now shares space with the brewery. We also talk about San Diego Pale Ale .394, a collaboration brew with Padres legend and Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.  We hear how AleSmith got the called up to the mound for the collaboration and the progression of the beer after the unfortunate passing of Gwynn. Of course, we sample some beers as we chat, including the .394, Juice Stand, and a 2016 Speedway Stout.  AleSmith's Private Stock Ale took Gold in the Old Ale or Strong Ale category at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival. Today’s podcast is with the folks from Colorado’s WeldWerks Brewing Company—and it’s a fun one. In fact I might go as far as to say that this is one of my favorite conversations I’ve had, since I started contributing to this podcast a couple years ago. You’ll hear a number of WeldWerks voices over the next hour or so, including owners Colin Jones and Neil Fisher, Ops Director Kristin Popcheff, brewer Arne Garlick and Sales Director Jake Goodman. It’s been quite the journey for WeldWerks since they set up in the town of Greeley, some 30 miles east of Fort Collins and Loveland, along the Front Range in Northern Colorado just three years ago. They exploded onto the scene thanks to beers like their New England IPA, Juicy Bits—a beer that impressed me so much I was compelled to visit, and eventually write about this fascinating brewery for GBH. In its short existence, WeldWerks has already experienced critical acclaim for beers like Juicy Bits and its pastry stouts such as Medianoche. In fact the barrel aged version of the latter picked up a coveted gold medal in the barrel-aged stout category at last years Great American Beer Festival. But this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their repertoire. WeldWerks released 100 different beers over the past year. And amongst zeitgeisty NEIPAs and Pastry Stouts, there were also tart Gose, crispy Pilsners and much more. This brewery is far from being a one, or two, trick pony. The brewery’s rapid growth and increase in popularity hasn’t been without its challenges, however. They’ve had to deal with long lines on beer release days, and in some cases, disappointed customers—some of whom, made their feelings towards the brewery pretty explicit in these instances. Learning to balance these reactions from consumers has been as important as it has building their relationships with industry partners, as they manage strong own-premise sales with increasing demand from retailers. What’s perhaps most impressive is that—along with fellow Greeley brewery Wiley Roots and local bars like Patrick’s Irish Pub—WeldWerks has helped to put its hometown on the American beer map. It would have perhaps been easier (but far more expensive) to set up their brewery in say, Downtown Fort Collins or Denver’s exploding River North district. But no, Greeley is where this Colorado brewery’s heart is—and their efforts are helping to develop the image of a town that locally is typically associated with industrial scale agriculture.
