In this episode, Josh and Ian discuss the cultural and important relevance of science fiction and the implications of myth on society. Black Mirror is back and still scaring Julian about the roll technology plays in his life. Jeremy is fine, and mumbling: I told you so.Let’s get the worst part over with: there are only three episodes. I know it’s crazy, but remember the first two seasons only had three or four episodes and we didn’t seem to mind. In an interview with creator Charlie Brooker, he mentioned Bandersnatch had another five hours of content, which he considered part of this season. Unfortunately, Bandersnatch was so dull, dry and boring I couldn’t make it through fifteen minutes of it while waiting two hours for a delayed flight. If you’re thinking of watching Bandersnatch, don’t. Avoid. While we only have three episodes, there are some heavy hitters this season. Anthony Mackie (Falcon from the Marvel Universe), Andrew Scott (Moriarty from BBC’s Sherlock) Topher Grace, and Miley Cyrus all star in their own episodes. And surprisingly, Cyrus delivers. The first episode explores men’s sexuality and alternative relationships through the internet. The second episode destroys the idea of privacy, with an unsettling display of a social media company having more power and information than law enforcement. The last episode is centered around the cult of celebrity and how technology can even steal someones humanity and create work without them. The pixels make an appearance again, one of the most mysterious parts of the Black Mirror universe. Episode three also seems to have a trend of delivering a happier ending with a heavy theme.Critics have not bee kind to Miley Cyrus, but she was pretty good in Episode three: “Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too.” She pretty much played a depressed person of herself, searching for her musical voice. My only real concern is that the episode started to run dry.. And this isn’t Miley’s fault, but we’ve touched in all of these themes already. We’ve been warned about big brother in Arkangel Season 4. The USS Callister explored consciousness and the ethics behind the pixels. We’ve dealt with sex and relationships before in Season 4.Finally, there was no awesome WTF moment. You know what I’m talking about. I’m talking the pig, I’m talking about the woman in jail, and the black museum. Yes, you could say the Anthony Mackie episode had it but eh, not really. This has been a solid (hopefully last) Black Mirror season. Watch.A lot of TV shows have a hard time moving into Season three because they’ve usually squandered their time in Season two and stretched themselves too far. And sure the handmaid’s stitch is getting a little old, but what’s not getting old is the war of handmaids against the Men (and sometimes women - Aunt Lydia anyone?) of Gilled. But Season 3 feels different because we get stuck on the enigma of one of our newest characters: Commander Lawrence, played by Bradley Whitford (West Wing, Get Out) is the man who helped create the system. Forget the Waterfords, people go to Commander Lawrence’s house to meet him, not the other way around. But what’s so unusual is that he doesn’t do the ceremony, he allows June to read arguing that “she is smart and can do more good for the world outside of Gilled than in.” But on the flip side, he humiliates her, he is actively fighting the rebellion in Chicago and calling women “commodities.” You should watch just to figure out what he’s actually all about.Season 3 seems to want to point out to all of us that there is a real slippery slope out here. We see how fast June falls into the handmaid’s lifestyle, we even see how some of the women have cracked under pressure (Janinie, oh Janinie) and we see how subtle misogyny helped create this system. Handmaid is trying to tell us that we are capable of such evil, disguised as a God Complex. Season 3 is worth watching because we are past the shock value of how much more cruel can we be to women and now fully into how much do we value women. Sure, we are a long way off from stitching someone’s mouth shut, but we silence women everyday by not taking sexual assault seriously, denying them proper care in the emergency room, and every time we pay them less than men.Watch.

This week on #NoOffense we embrace the fact that it was Friday the 13th when we recorded and we have a little chat about death. Actually this week's agenda wasn't spawned by hockey mask wearing killers, but an article about a mother who died and the brutal obituary that her children wrote for her and the question that it raises...what is the legacy that you hope to leave behind and we use Netflix's Black Mirror as a backdrop to discuss the topic. We also get into some AI talk and discuss scientists at MIT who decided to create an AI with psychotic tendencies, how Alexa has developed her own psychotic tendencies, and how you can even buy your own do it yourself AI kits from Target. Now we realize this sounds too serious, but never fear, we still have our Welcome to Florida segment and this week we cover a man who didn't actually drink and drive, technically, a man who calls himself "The Beast" who defended his home from an invader, and a homeless man with no arms who still managed to stab a tourist. Netflix's Black Mirror guides our imaginations again in another episode about some scary technologies the guys have come across. We're able to believe our eyes a little less everyday. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes the return of Dr. Martin Kevorkian. A professor of English at the University of Texas Austin, Dr. Kevorkian wrote Color Monitors: The Blackface of Technology in America. The book investigates White Supremacy in cinema and suggests that non-white people are often symbolically depicted as robots and other non-human entities in White films and narratives. He's visited The C.O.W.S. numerous times over the years to discuss an array of films. This time we'll briefly revisit Netflix's Black Mirror. This sci-fi anthology, which began as a British television series, has become a global critics choice. The fourth season was recently released, and the six episodes reinforce many of the Racist themes we previously discussed with Dr. Kevorkian. We'll pay acute attention to the depiction of black males throughout the series. We'll also discuss Matt Damon's two most recent projects, Downsizing and Suburbicon. The former tackles overpopulation and environmental destruction, by imagining technology that would allow humans to be shrank to mere inches. Suburbicon is a Coen brother film that's eerily similar to their 1997 smash hit Fargo. While a neighborhood of White Terrorists assaults the lone black family to "integrate" their area, Matt Damon and a cadre of gangsters, including his Damon's sister-in-law, Julianne Moore, bungle a conspiracy to kill his wife and defraud the insurance company. The racial strife helps conceal Damon's treachery. These strangely comparable films represent bedraggled White men, who are desperate, dangerous. #AntiBlackness INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943#
Note: This podcast has major spoilers for two episodes of "Black Mirror." Futurist Jonathan Crabb joins us to talk about Netflix's "Black Mirror" and what it can teach us about the dangers of future technology. Terrible Opinions Jonathan: White chocolate is the best kind. Jordan: In the long term, it's mean to let your kids be super picky with food. Matthias: The app business model is broken. "Could have been a 'Black Mirror' episode ..." We kick off by covering the strange real-life episode that was the false ballistic missile alarm in Hawaii on Saturday morning. Hawaii residents received an alert on their phones letting them know that a missile attack was on its way. "Seek immediate shelter. This is not a drill," the message read. Hawaii emergency officials revoked the warning 38 minutes later, but the damage was done. To Delete or Not to Delete? Matthias brings in a fireworks-inducing topic: Should Twitter delete President Donald Trump's account because of his threatening tweets toward other world leaders? Simulating God's Image? We look at two specific "Black Mirror" episodes: "Fifteen Million Merits" and "Hang the DJ." Jonathan admits that while he tends to be a positive person, he also takes the warnings in "Black Mirror" to heart. The show is basically telling people, "here's what will happen if X technology is used in a way that dials it up to 11." Somehow, we think it's OK to keep using that technology at a level 2 or 3 ... which is why we need to pay attention to "Black Mirror." "How would we treat the AI version of ourselves?" is a recurring question in "Black Mirror," and Jonathan characterizes this theme as an imitation of a common argument about God. We analyze the episode "Hang the DJ" and draw different lessons from the story about a futuristic dating app.
