We at Mad Men Men know a little something about being the rejected podcast. That's right, we're talking about Season 4 Episode 4 this week, directed by the one and only John Slattery A.K.A. Roger Sterling! If you have any criticisms, be sure to write half a sentence on your typewriter and then throw the paper out. In case this is your first time digging into our podcast, we recap Mad Men from the perspective of a first-time watcher, someone who only watched the show once while it was airing, and a superfan who watches excessively instead of having a functional social life. Extra credits: Our intro music is “Mad Men Men” by Tom Davidson, which is an original remix of the show's opening theme “A Beautiful Mine” by RJD2. Podcast illustration is by Jon Negroni. Our podcast hosts include Jon Negroni (Podcast Editor of InBetweenDrafts), Will Ashton (cohost of the Cinemaholics podcast), and Michael Overhulse (a guy who's addicted to working at startups).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ian Fleming Publications has announced that Ian Fleming's works are being edited. They are removing or altering language in the books. This has caused quite a lively discussion amongst James Bond fans and literary fans in general. This announcement comes shortly after a similar announcement about Roald Dahl's books. In this podcast episode, Dan and Tom discuss the impact of these changes. Along with their own thoughts, they bring in comments from members of the SpyMovieNavigator Facebook page. As this seems to be a trend, We look not just at written works, but editing other works of art as well. Are people offended by these changes? What would Shakespeare think? So, are the comments positive or negative to this rewriting effort? Listen to find out! Then, send us a comment about the discussion at Info@cracking-the-code-of-spy-movies. We'd love to hear from you. Do you think that it is good to see Ian Fleming's works edited? Furthermore, you can check out all of our podcasts on your favorite podcast app or on our website. This week we are joined by internationally known disability advocate and stand-up comedian Pamela Rae Schuller. Pamela tells us about growing up as a person of short stature with Tourettes and OCD, "The cute kind of Tourettes!" But also the kind that caused a tic strong enough to break her neck. We discuss the portrayal of disability in the media and how it perpetuates misconceptions that promote stigma. We talk about how children with all kinds of disabilities struggle to fit in and often get thrown into special ed, and the differences between the structural shaming of these kids in public school and the boarding school that helped her fall in love with comedy by fully embracing who she is. Pamela tells us about her experiences talking in schools and the difference between the way adults and kids respond to her talks. She spills the tea about her experience with Peloton Bikes and the hate she received after her New York Post article, which was meant to raise awareness around inclusion and accessibility for fitness brands, especially during this pandemic. Finally, we hear about imposter syndrome and discuss finding the balance to nail new opportunities. Also on this episode: Cumpanion Cumgratulations! Social media platform Twitter is dropping the terms master, slave and blacklist in favour of more inclusive language. The terms are frequently used in programming codes which originated decades ago. US bank JPMorgan has also announced a similar move as more companies address racism following the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis. Replacing the terms could cost millions and take months, according to experts. On Thursday, Twitter's engineering division tweeted out a set of words that it wants to move away from using in favour of more inclusive language. The list includes replacing whitelist with allowlist and master/slave with leader/follower. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

These days, mass culture, movies, commercial television, music, novels are awash with language that once would have been deemed beyond the pale. Does it still make sense to speak of 'obscene language'? What makes words 'obscene'? Can obscene language be used in such a way that removes the taint from what they refer to?

2 Minute Tip: Confirm Value At the end of a presentation, I like to ask the audience, "Was this helpful?" or "Was this valuable?" Usually there is still a lot of energy in the room and folks will answer with an enthusiastic, "Yes!" Obviously, this is great for my ego, but it also does a couple other things. It gives the audience members a chance to acknowledge their own approval. They have now acknowledged that yes, this session was a good use of their time. They are also more likely to remember that it was valuable because they experienced saying it was valuable. Further, once folks say something out loud among other people, they are more likely to continue to believe it. Post Tip Discussion: Avoid Offensive language Among the updates to the 17th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style is a change to pronouns. They now consider "they" and "their" to be acceptable 3rd person, singular, gender-neutral pronouns. This got me thinking about the evolution of language. Words and phrases that may have been common and acceptable a few years ago may no longer be appropriate in a professional context. It's important to remove those words from most presentations. They may be racially charged, ableist, homophobic, or offensive to another marginalized community. Whether you see this as the growth of social justice and awareness or political correctness and oversensitivity run amuck is irrelevant. Using inflammatory language in your presentation, even unintentionally, can make you a less effective speaker. It can distract from your message and if you don't land your message or your call to action, then what was the point? Mark Horstman of the Manager Tools podcast is fond of saying, "Communication is what the listener does." The intent behind your words doesn't matter because the listener assigns value to your words based on their own experiences and point of view. If you must include inflammatory language, do it intentionally, not accidentally. Do it because you have a specific goal you want to achieve with those words. Don't let simple neglect undermine your message. And make sure you know your audience and that your word choice is appropriate for it. Call To Action Was this valuable? Let me know in the comments below, or leave a message on the listener feedback line at 650-Talk-Tip. After your next presentation, ask your audience if they found it valuable. Watch your language for potentially offensive terms and purge them if need be. Don't get best...get better.

What, if anything, is wrong with swearing? And, what exactly are we doing when we try to swear inoffensively? I begin by reflecting on why we swear, why it is widely deemed offensive, and some of the benefits of swearing. I then turn to the widespread practice of substituting asterisks for letters (and analogous spoken strategies) in an effort to swear without causing offence, and consider what could possibly explain how such a practice succeeds (if it does) in making swear words less offensive. I argue that – to the extent that swearing is offensive – there is no plausible philosophical story according to which this practice succeeds in rendering swearing inoffensive, and that some accounts of why swearing is offensive entail that asterisked swearing actually magnifies the badness of swearing. I conclude that, in so far as we are willing to view asterisked swearing as inoffensive, we should not be offended by swearing. (This talk will contain swearing. However, since the speaker hopes to convince you that swearing is less offensive than it is often taken to be, you should not let this dissuade you from coming along.)

Recorded on March 11, 2013 with Brian Fife, James Fingal and Thomas Westberg. Online games purportedly exist to bring us together and create memorable communal experiences. Few mainstream games actively cultivate positive interactions among their players. Players, particuarly when they are fired up and competitive, can get pretty rough. Tom reminds Brian and Jim that they are all elitist jerks, and Brian discusses his internal conflict when players use certain types of language while they trash talk. It is good to take a stand and to shift social norms, but it is not clear how to find an effective way to engage players in this context. You know people are easily offended. I can say one thing in a room full of people, lets say "I HATE F***in B****es they all make me sick" and there is a 90% chance that everyone in the room..at least most of them will be offended. Just because I used those two words. As I have stated numerous times on K-100 words are just words most often and peoples actions 9and reactions) give more power to them then they should have. But profanity is something that almost everyone I know and associate with besides a small few engage in. Even people who go to church can have a potty mouth. In fact I would say when you meet a person that doesnt use profanity most people think that it is odd. But I mean who made curse words bad anyway? Who says that those words are "foul"? Those words are not not full condemning statements to people. If I walk up to you and say F*** well then I haven offended, threatened, demeaned or harmed you in anyway. Yet and still if I walk up to a stranger and say that it's a good chance they will look at my funny, maybe even take offense. I have a POTTY MOUTH just like most people in my circle. I may overdue it on K-100 but thats the fun in it. Since I know it's just words I say them just to get under the people skin who makes a big deal about. Yes people, Im and A**hole! So here goes: 1) DO YOU USE PROFANITY OFTEN, DO YOU HAVE A "POTTY MOUTH"? 2) DO YOU GET OFFENDED WHEN PEOPLE USE A LOT OF PROFANITY? 3) DO YOU THINK ITS A DOUBLE STANDARD FOR WOMEN THAT USE A LOT OF PROFANITY? 4) WHEN DID YOU START TO USE PROFANITY AND WHAT IS AN AGE THAT IS TOO YOUNG NOWADAYS? 5) DO YOU THINK RELIGIOUS PEOPLE THAT USE PROFANITY ARE HYPOCRITES? 6) DO YOU THINK PROFANITY IS CENSORED TOO MUCH OR NOT ENOUGH IN OUR SOCIETY TODAY? 7) HAVE YOU EVER HAD TO REALLY CURSE SOMEONE OUT, AND IF SO WHEN AND WHY?
We start off this week by discussing the censorship of naughty and/or offensive lyrics. If you're an impressionable youth who can be unduly influenced by suggestive language, send us an email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net), and we'll fill your brain with all kinds of great ideas. Later, we have a chat about Gonzo the Muppet's sexual obsession with chickens. What the hell is Gonzo, anyway? And what does he get out of catching cannonballs? The definitive (or, one might say, the conanical) answers to these and other questions are certainly not in this episode. But have a listen anyway, will you? Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.
