Paul Owen not only believes in the skills of 50+ generations but he reckons these are the people who are the best sales people – yet seriously overlooked. Paul dispels the negative stereotypes around sales and says anyone older has been selling all their lives – from convincing a child to go to bed on time to persuading a friend to join you at a particular pub or restaurant.  These are all forms of selling! Paul is a seasoned expert in sales coaching and is now applying his skills in new ways. He has learned from his parents who declined mentally when they gave up teaching and believes this period is no longer a time to stop and slow down the way it used to be. He argues individuals over 50 have huge untapped potential in sales, emphasising their life experiences are what qualify them.

When we ask people the Number 1 benefit of great sales questioning, few people get the answer right. Yes, of course, we ask questions of a potential client to understand their needs and work out if we can help. But there is a lot more to it. In this short solo episode, host Paul Owen shares the one benefit that is the most powerful and the most overlooked in the world of sales. Of course, we make mention of other benefits of questions: Building rapport - people enjoy talking, especially about themselves, and this builds a connectionLearning their language - we all use English differentlyControlling the conversation - questions are the conversational signpostsMaking our lives easier - when they're talking, we can relax and listen carefully Making them think - a client, asked good questions, has to think. This is key to a productive use of their time and oursBut the focus in this episode is on one other benefit. The idea shared in this episode will not only change how you communicate in your sales conversations and your business meetings; it will probably change the communication in your personal life too. Thanks for listening! Many people start selling by copying someone else's style of selling but find that it doesn't suit them. They struggle to connect with potential clients, find it hard to sell well and, all too often, give up on sales and think they're not suited to it. This is bad for career development options but could be terminal if you're running your own business and need to sell to keep the business alive.  But what if you could find your own true sales voice? Something with the curiosity to uncover client needs and the compelling persuasive style to give you a platform to share your enthusiasm for the product or service you offer.  Join host, Paul Owen, as he talks to Sarah Jolley-Jarvis about how to find your own unique sales voice. Having been a successful salesperson in the healthcare market, Sarah set up her own consultancy and has worked for several years helping people - many of them female entrepreneurs - to sell better in their own natural style. As well as her consultancy, she's also an international bestselling author with her book, Selling Without Sleaze, which you can find on her company website: https://go.sellingwithoutsleaze.com/. If you'd like to get in touch with Sarah direct, you can find her on LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram - as she's the only Sarah Jolley-Jarvis in the world, you should be able to track her down easily! Whether you're a new sales executive or a business owner looking to grow sales in your own natural voice, tune in to hear Sarah's take on an alternative way to sell. Thanks for listening! How can you overcome the fear of rejection on outbound sales calls? 2 simple tips will help you and, in just 8 minutes, we'll share them with you in this episode.  For many people, the relative comfort of sending emails takes them away from the fear of making outbound calls. If that works, great. If it doesn't, it's probably not your email text that's not working; it's the fact that you'd be better making calls. If only you could overcome the fear.....  Join host Paul Owen to hear a couple of simple tips he shares with his 1-2-1 coaching clients. The first tip focuses on mindset and the oft-misunderstood culture of sales. The second tip will make the change much easier. Change is often held back by trying to move the dial too far too quickly. Making the first step quicker and easier makes it more likely you'll take it.   With these 2 tips, you'll be more likely to overcome your fear of rejection and make more outbound calls, still the most effective, quickest and most successful means of finding a client's needs and moving them to action. Thanks for listening! Did you know that, by 2050, there will be 2 billion people across the globe over 60 years of age; that's double the current number. In the UK alone, 31 million will be over 50 by 2041. When you look at the demographics and then consider the workforce challenges we face, we must reconnect the missing link between the workforce over 50 and the potential they offer the workplace. Join host, Paul Owen, as he discusses this issue with his guest, Simon Long, Growth Director of 55 Redefined. Simon has enjoyed 3 decades of business triumphs in several industries: from drinks with Diageo to Formula 1, Simon has enjoyed success in many markets yet, upon hitting his mid-50s, he faced a common challenge of finding a new role in an increasingly youth-obsessed job market. In this episode, Simon explains that demographic change means we have to change the way in which we build our business teams of the future. There are fewer younger workers, we're living longer and we have talent shortages – that means we all have a problem. Tune in to hear Simon explain the benefits of employing a diverse workforce that welcomes older workers; the way in which 50+ employees are 200% better than workers in their 20s; and the benefits offered to the world of sales in particular by employing people with years of life experience. If you'd like to get in touch with Simon direct, you can find him on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/simon-r-long/). Sales Lessons from Sport: Planning Is Liberating, Not Restrictive | Paul Owen - 1624

The Sales Evangelist

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 19, 2022 28:27

In today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, Donald Kelly meets with Paul Owen, the owner of Sales Talent, to discuss the importance of planning when it comes to sales, and why all salespeople should have some sort of a plan to maximize their performance. The importance of planning in the world of sales: Many salespeople will go into a deal without a plan in mind. Instead, they simply rely on their past experiences and instincts. This CAN work in some instances, but having a plan is always better. When you approach each sale with a structure in mind, you can replicate success more reliably. Instead of winging it and simply having one-off successes, a plan gives you the framework and tools you need to consistently make a profit. Why don't salespeople utilize planning more? A lot of salespeople believe that going off of a plan is too RESTRICTIVE. One big misconception sellers have is that sales are too dynamic and unique to utilize one sales plan. Sales are unique, yes, but they still have some commonalities. These commonalities allow sellers to actually utilize a plan to better equip themselves to finalize the deal. Another reason why salespeople don't use planning more is that they're naturally good at selling. As the saying goes, “if it ain't broke, don't fix it”. This CAN work if the salesperson works individually. When they start to build a business, however, they'll run into issues. Unless the entrepreneur finds people who are also naturally good at sales, they won't be able to teach new sellers how to effectively sell. Having a plan in place can alleviate this problem. How can you start using planning in your sales? Take notes of past sales, and what did and didn't work, and utilize that to create a plan. Although sales are unique, there are still common themes and elements between them. Take those common themes and elements and use them to create a framework for your future sales. Use buyer feedback. Ask past clients for their experience and utilize this feedback. Implement what works and get rid of what doesn't to streamline your sales process and create planning designed to increase your sales. You can get a hold of Paul Owen and learn more about using structure and plans in your sales through LinkedIn. Learning how to ask sales questions is one of the most difficult things to do when you first start to sell because there are so many variables. In this episode, Paul Owen welcomes successful entrepreneur Julian Miall and sales leader and university lecturer Tim Chapman to discuss some of the fundamentals of sales questioning. To become an outstanding communicator, you must ask questions and listen to the answers. They will tell you everything you need to know as you search for the most important thing in sales: the truth. Too often, though, people don’t find out the truth and their ability to satisfy their customer becomes a lucky dip. There are five key benefits to asking questions in sales conversations and these are discussed with sales leader John Pentin and entrepreneur Jamie Lester. With host, Paul Owen, they examine the importance of listening in sales, discuss the benefits of listening well and explore why people often fail because they’re simply not interested in any voice other than their own.

The words you say matter most but the way you say them helps too. In this episode, our host, Paul Owen, is joined by entrepreneurs Josh Cohen and Dominic Cotton as they discuss the key factors to help present your stories (and your business messages) in the right tone of voice to create the right impression. How do you add credibility, gravitas and humanity to the words you use in business conversations?

SECRET SKILL. HIDDEN CAREER. The Truth About Sales

The first step of a sales conversation is the shortest part, it’s the easiest part to prepare and it’s the easiest to practise. However, it remains the hardest part to do when you first start selling. Our host, Paul Owen, is joined in this episode by Catherine Schalk and Ben Rowland as they discuss how to create the best first impression when starting conversations, whether over the phone or face-to-face. Get the first few seconds right and you’re in with a chance of success; get it wrong and things finish pretty quickly. Getting names right helps too!

Every sales conversation with a client is different, of course, but not as different as you might imagine. Underpinning most successful sales conversations is a four-step structure and, through following the structure, you will have good calls and meetings with prospective clients more consistently. What are those steps? And do they always come in the same order? Our host, Paul Owen, is joined in this episode by Tanya Uniacke and Jamie Lester to discuss the benefits of a structure to sales interactions and share thoughts on winning ideas for the beginning, middle and end of productive conversations with prospective clients.

SECRET SKILL. HIDDEN CAREER. The Truth About Sales

There are 5 attributes so regularly found in successful salespeople that it’s fair to call them the ‘Ingredients For Success’. The traits are also key to success in other areas of business. Do you have them? How do you know? Hosted by Paul Owen with special guests, Nicola Cook and Marcus Vassiliou, this episode discusses the attributes for success and explores whether you’re born with them or whether they can be learnt.
