In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life podcast, host Avik welcomes Tom Jackobs, an experienced entrepreneur who transitioned from running a fitness business to becoming an “impact pilot,” helping entrepreneurs enhance their income through effective sales strategies and storytelling. Tom shares his diverse background, including a degree in theatre management and a career in oil and gas logistics, which led to health issues and a subsequent transformation through diet and exercise. This transformation inspired him to become a fitness trainer and eventually open his own fitness business, which he successfully ran and sold. Tom discusses the importance of storytelling in business, sharing an example of a client who doubled her business by authentically sharing her personal story. He emphasizes that many entrepreneurs struggle with sales because they focus too much on helping others and not enough on the business side. Tom's approach, “selling from the heart,” aims to shift this mindset by viewing sales as a way to help people make positive changes in their lives. The conversation also touches on the therapeutic benefits of storytelling for mental health and personal growth. Tom explains his process for helping entrepreneurs develop better sales strategies, starting with a mindset shift and creating effective presentations to understand and solve clients' problems.
344 Evolving Stories Returning for his second episode, Tom Jackobs and Sarah Elkins discuss how storytelling has changed for both of them since their last conversation, how their tools and strategies have changed, as well as how important storytelling is as a medium for both of them. Highlights It is okay to look for coaches, especially when you yourself are a coach. Find your own strategies and tools for writing and working. You can be good at things and not be the best at them. Quotes “At least I started writing, because that is the hardest part.” “I'm not a chef, but I'm a good cook.” “We need the ones that are going to slow us down and make decisions better.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, You've listened to this whole conversation about how Tom started his book, how he wrote his book, why he wrote his book, why he started his podcast, and some of the challenges he experienced in that time. What is something you want to take on that you've been considering for a long time that you are now ready for that maybe you weren't ready for a year ago or five years ago. What will be your first step? Are you the kind of person that needs a template to get started or are you a person that looks at a blank page and gets inspired? And, as always, thank you for listening. About Tom I am a Coach of Fitness Health, Entrepreneur, Public Speaker, Improving Sales, Customer Service. About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Selling and storytelling in sales is a dynamic combination that transforms a mere transaction into a captivating and meaningful experience. Effective salesmanship is not just about pushing a product; it's about understanding the customer's needs and desires, uncovering their pain points, and presenting a solution that resonates with their emotions and aspirations. Storytelling plays a pivotal role in this process, as it weaves a narrative that engages, empathizes, and connects with the customer personally. A well-crafted story humanizes the brand and fosters trust, building a bridge of understanding that paves the way for a genuine, long-lasting relationship between the seller and the buyer. In this episode, Tom Jackobs shares tips and strategies for effective selling, how to craft and use personal stories, the role of public speaking in sales, and how he revitalized his business through effective selling and storytelling but also transitioned to coaching other professionals. Tom is an entrepreneur whose journey began as a 16-year-old mobile DJ, and he unknowingly delved into Direct Response Marketing before the internet era. He dabbled in various businesses, including fitness, where he dramatically increased annual revenue from $100,000 to $500,000 in one year through effective selling techniques. After simplifying his fitness business, he transitioned to coaching other professionals and traveling worldwide, selling approximately $4 million worth of his coaching program. Today, he teaches service providers the art of storytelling to enhance their sales efforts, demonstrating the transformative power of persistence, adaptability, and storytelling in business. Tune in! In 2008, Tom Jackobs purchased a personal training facility… and almost went broke in the first six months. He had to learn how to sell - and those skills changed his life forever. In this engrossing episode of Let's Talk Business, Meny Hoffman talks to Tom about the secrets of successful selling, including how to see sales as problem solving, at what point you need to keep your mouth shut, how to avoid appearing like (and being) a sleazy salesperson, how to get a prospect to give you a decision at the end of the first meeting, why the questions you ask before your presentation are more important than the presentation itself, the reasons that you are your best salesperson (and what to do about that when you are big enough to have a full sales team), and more. [00:01 - 09:33] Opening Segment • How Tom grew up disliking sales to becoming a successful salesperson • The negative approach to sales comes from the idea that one person wins and one person loses, creating a zero-sum game • Tom's approach to sales starts with the mindset shift that salespeople are problem solvers [09:34 - 20:50] Understanding The Process of Selling • Tom discusses his experience in sales in the fitness industry and why the consultative approach is important • Salespeople should focus on getting a decision from the prospect at the end of the conversation • Treating sales as a process will ensure you'll consistently close the deal [20:51 - 24:49] How the Sales Process Can Set You Up for Success • Some extroverts spend too much time on rapport-building • Introverts do better if they stick to the process • As a business owner, you are the primary salesperson in your business Establish a good management process and scripting of the sales process for your team [24:50 - 30:48] Leveraging the Power of Storytelling • Understand the needs of the client or crowd you're speaking to and address any objections throughout the presentation • Share stories and case studies of past clients, as well as your own personal story • Tailor your presentation to connect the audience to their dream outcome with your product [30:49 - 36:54] Closing Segment • The sale is made during the questioning or discovery phase • Be comfortable having uncomfortable conversations with your client • Tom on the rapid-fire questions Want to connect with Tom? Key Quotes: “If we come across as that needy salesperson or the sleazy salesperson that's pushing something on somebody that's going to turn off most of the population these days. But if we rather approach it as we are problem solvers and our first initial obligation and duty for that prospect is to find out what their problem is.” - Tom Jackobs “I am a problem solver now, and I have to find a process to sell. And that's the key word is that it's a process. And when you treat it like a process, then you do it the same way each and every time and you'll get the same result, which is the sale at the end of it.” - Tom Jackobs “There's no reason that a decision should not be made. And oftentimes, I'm giving them the agenda of what's going to happen and at the end of our conversation, we're going to make a decision together, whether this is a good fit for you or not, either is okay, but we do want to make a decision today.” - Tom Jackobs Connect with Ptex Group: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn LEAVE A REVIEW + and SHARE this episode with someone who wants to achieve in business. Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Tom Jackobs. Tom has an incredible entrepreneurial story and that's fitting because he's devoted his life to helping entrepreneurs and business create more opportunity and sales through story-telling. Tom quit his job to buy a personal training franchise and was broke in 6 months. It was in the moment of just about losing it all that he realized his biggest flaw was he didn't know how to sell, so he devoted himself to becoming a great salesperson and brought the business back from the brink going on to create millions of dollars in sales in his future businesses and programs. Tom realized that the key to effective selling was that it was process, but telling the right story was the main component. He now operates Impact Pilot, a firm that helps entrepreneurs generate more income through better sales strategy and using stories to sell. I've always believed that selling through story is the best way and I've asked Tom to come on share how we can make the most of it in our businesses. Tom Jackobs is a seasoned public speaker and storytelling coach with a knack for turning personal narratives into impactful sales pitches. In our engaging conversation, we spoke about Tom's unique journey from crashing and burning on stage to mastering the art of ‘selling from the stage' through storytelling, emphasizing the transformational power of a well-constructed personal narrative.Tom reminisced about his initial struggle with stage sales, sharing a particular instance where a lack of connection and the right content led to a glaring failure in front of 60 potential clients. It was a bitter learning curve that eventually shaped his distinct approach to public speaking and sales.“I didn't have the right content, I didn't connect with my audience using a personal story, and I was super awkward in the pitch,” Tom reflects on his past missteps. His methodology is unlike any other. With a background in Theatre, Tom leverages his performance, scriptwriting, and production skills to assist business owners, coaches, and authors in amplifying their revenue using their personal stories. His expertise transcends traditional public speaking coaching, tapping into the essence of authentic storytelling to foster a genuine connection with the audience.Tom elaborated on the process he employs, which commences with honing an individual's Impact Story. He stressed the significance of structuring this story in a way that captivates the audience, seamlessly intertwines teaching moments, and culminates in pitches that don't feel like pitches. The aim is to turn these narratives into a Hollywood blockbuster, a thrilling journey that holds the audience's attention while subtly leading them to a desired action.“You find a story which will have a real impact, utilize a proven method to structure it to captivate your audience, create your teaching moments, create your pitches which don't seem like pitches, use your voice and your body to create a performance, and create your speaker kit to book more opportunities,” Tom outlines his meticulous process. What sets Tom apart is his lived experience, once being in the shoes of individuals striving to sell their products but lacking the know-how. His amalgamation of real-world sales experience, performance acumen from theatre, and a structured approach to storytelling births a unique coaching system. It's about creating an impact, evoking emotions, and directing those emotions towards a meaningful action—making a purchase. Our discourse extended to practical examples where Tom's storytelling framework significantly bolstered a client's business. The case of Fatima, a fitness entrepreneur, was particularly noteworthy. Her dramatic life story, when curated and presented effectively, doubled her business within a year—a testament to the profound impact storytelling can have on sales and audience engagement. We wrapped up our conversation with an invitation for a complimentary call with Tom, offering a chance to explore a collaborative journey towards mastering the art of storytelling in sales. It's not just about selling a product; it's about selling a narrative that resonates, engages, and ultimately, convinces.
Along the path of his eclectic career, Tom Jackobs picked out the high-payoff tidbits you need to craft a story that moves people to action. That's charisma in a nutshell, and being an extrovert is NOT required. It's about creating a teaching moment, a pitch that doesn't sound like a pitch (because no one likes being sold to!) What you are really going to love about this episode, and I'm speaking to those whose work is related to technology and or engineering, is that Tom has a PROCESS for crafting a story that sells. What Laura and Tom really focus on is “selling” your solutions/proposals to senior leadership, how to find that story that sells the value you offer. (You should probably listen to this episode twice, just saying.)

Main Business Issues: Letting go of the anxiousness when business is going well Tom's Key Insights and Takeaways: As a multifaceted entrepreneur Tom was someone who got a lot done and his success showed it He had a hard time accepting “boredom” and became anxious when his business was stable and thus “boring” When we unpacked the pattern deeper it was actually something that was reflective of his childhood patterns of performance The anxiousness was due to fear of “being” punished for being idle Unpacking this further it allowed him to realize it was creating a distortion in how he was dealing with his team and showing up as a leader Additionally, it allowed him to make the realization that he had a hard time imagining who he would be without this limiting pattern, really opening up the door for his own transformation Connect with Tom Instagram: @impactpilot Twitter: @tomjackobs Facebook: facebook.com/tom.jackobs Facebook.com/jackobseffect YouTube: https://www.TomJackobs.com/YouTube LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/trainertom/ Web: http://www.TomJackobs.com

282 Turning Points For Our Growth Stepping out of your comfort zone can feel frightening, from massive changes to the tiniest ones can feel like the world is ending if you are not stretching and growing as a person. Traveling, whether it be a new way home from work or halfway across the world, can impact your perception on life, as can being open to the thoughts and feelings of others, and accepting what you cannot change. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Tom Jackobs discuss the importance of allowing yourself to stretch and change but also staying true to yourself and your values despite all these changes. Highlights You need to set the stage for your stories. Perceptions of yourself change over time however it's up to you to take accountability for your actions. Expanding your horizons is imperative to your growth and health as a human being let alone as being a storyteller. What do I have control over and what don't I have control over? Quotes “That's part of really good story telling, is I call it color and texture. Bringing color and texture to your story because a lot of times if I would have just said ‘It was an old school that I went to,' then everyone would have a different image of what that school would be. Even if I said, ‘Oh yeah I was driving my car,' you have a different idea of what that car is versus what I have a different idea of what I'm saying. However by adding in that color and texture of the story, like the smell of the wood and the recital hall, or the car example it was an old beat up BMW three series. Now everybody now knows what that image is and that draws the listener in because now you're on the same page in terms of the details of the story.” “Has my identity really changed? And certain elements I think have changed overtime, but I think that's apart of society in terms of kind of forcing you into a title or an identity, but what's deep inside of me, who I really am, that hasn't changed but that perception of how it comes across to other people I think does change over time.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, When will you take a small step out of your comfort zone, into your stretch zone so that you can take more of those steps, gradually seeing all of the improvements and the changes and the satisfaction you get from doing those small steps out of your comfort zone. Those things that scare you a little bit will scare you less and less so that the bigger things that scare you now won't feel so overwhelming when you're ready to take that step. And, as always, thank you for listening. About Tom To say Tom has been through a few things in his 30+ years of being an entrepreneur is an understatement. “You have to have a real conversation with customers, so it won't feel like you're trying to sell them anything, and they won't feel like they're being sold something either,” explains Tom Jackobs, Serial Entrepreneur. Something that all business owners fear is coming off as pushy to potential customers. Today, Tom shares his insight to help others learn the art of conversational selling. Tom initially believed he wouldn't be good at sales because he is introverted by nature. He later realized anyone could succeed at selling because it's a learned skill just like anything else. If you focus on having honest conversations with potential clients by asking them the right questions, you can determine what they want and how you can help. With this strategy, you won't feel pushy or “salesy,” but helpful as you fulfill the needs of others and grow your business. If you want to sell your product or service, you have to understand what your customers want. Learn more about Tom's essential sales questions, his entrepreneurial journey, and mastering the pre-discovery call. Quotes • “You have to have a real conversation with customers, so it won't feel like you're trying to sell them anything, and they won't feel like they're being sold something either.” (3:30-3:39) | Tom) • “As an introvert, sales didn't come naturally to me. And really, sales doesn't come naturally to anybody. It is a learned skill, and anybody can do it.” (5:49-5:59) | Tom) • “When you're following up with leads that have already expressed interest, it's critical to call them within 20 minutes of them filling out that online form.” (13:44-13:55) | Tom) • “On the discovery call, we go through the rapport building, the questioning phase, and then present the solution.” (20:42-20:49) | Tom) • “Have a conversation with somebody and help them realize what the next step is, and how to take that next step easily with you.” (23:26-23:33) | Tom) Links Download Tom's special guide with the 3 keys to doubling your sales: https://tomjackobs.com/3keys/ Connect with Tom Jackobs Website: https://BusinessLeadMaximizer.com Website: https://tomjackobs.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ImpactPilot Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/impactpilot/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/trainertom/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZgzqH2MiIMHQbLoJXvA5_Q ==== Thank You For Listening! http://www.TomJackobs.com/storybook Where to start my entrepreneurial journey ... How about when I was 16 years old. I wanted to be a mobile DJ ... you know the guy who played music for weddings, homecomings and bar mitzvahs. So I got two turntables and a mic and learned to rap like a ... sorry a little RUN DMC for you. I was doing Direct Response Marketing before I knew what it was. I would go through the wedding announcements in the Sunday paper, then look up the brides address in the white pages phone book (this was pre internet!) and send them a letter with a demo tape. Oh, and I also belonged to a string quartet as well so I offered those services too. I built a small business which took me through college... where I was brainwashed into believing I need to get a job. I started working in Oil and Gas for 12 years, but always had the bug to build a business of my own. I dabbled with a few, including a shutter and blinds business, a software rail tracking business, photography and even event planning. It wasn't until I found my passion for fitness that I went full in. In 2008 I quit my oil and gas job and purchased an existing personal training facility. I quickly doubled it (before assessing the need for it). And tried to be everything to everyone. We had gym memberships for $25 a month, personal training, pilates, group classes, bootcamps, and nutrition programs. I couldn't manage it all and the expenses were piling up. I quickly went broke within the first 6 months. I had to learn how to sell. Which I didn't like. But I realized that selling was a process and if you follow the process each and every time, ask the right questions then you will make the sale. As a bonus, when you tell personal stories along the way you make an even deeper connection with your prospect. So I started to sell. And I sold a lot! I increased our revenue from $100,000 the first year to $500,000 the second year of business. It was BANANAS! That was also the time when I decided to simplify the business, because I ended up spending most of that gross revenue on operating it. NOT Smart. But once I simplified it was great! By year three the business was basically running by itself and I decided to work with a consulting company coaching other fitness professionals how to sell, market and manage their fitness business. This is when I also learned to fly airplanes. I also travelled about 200,000 miles in 3 years all around the world putting on workshops and selling from the stage. In fact I sold about $4 Million worth of the coaching program in that time. That's when I learned that telling stories will help you SELL MORE. So that brings us up to now, I've sold my fitness business and now teach service providers how to tell their stories so they can sell more of their service. AND I LOVE IT!! So what about the personal side of Tom? For fun I still fly, in fact I'm the president of my flying club. I've had several personal relationships which have never worked out for one reason or another and was married for 7 years when California first allowed same-sex marriages, unfortunately that didn't' work out either and we were divorced in 2015. Right before the supreme court ruled for Marriage Equality across the country. Ironic. I love to travel and it is my goal to immerse myself in different cultures for 30 days at a time. Recently I spent 30 Days in Mexico City and have documented that journey in a docu series. Check out the episodes here: 30 DAY EXPERIMENT Learn more about your ad choices. “Whatever you are trying to sell, storytelling is the most powerful thing you can do. Most of the best business ideas come from personal experiences.” (from Jack Preston’s blog post about Virgin Media Pioneers’ Pitch to Rich competition)In today’s episode, Tom Jackobs, of Impact Pilot, tells us a story about how he became a better business person and in the process learned what he calls the secret to great sales: storytelling. When you tell a story you are able to put your listeners in your shoes (and you theirs) so that a picture can be drawn and the potential buyer can actually see why he or she needs what you have to offer. Tom is giving us a wonderful gift today on top of that great conversation. This week on The Winning Brand Podcast we talk to Tom Jackobs, The Impact Pilot. Before Tom Jackobs became know as the Impact Pilot for helping business owners sell their services better through a unique sales process which incorporates questions that sell and stories that sell, he had owned a dozen or so businesses. His personal training studio was the one he is most proud of in his 30+ years as an entrepreneur. This is the one where he learned the power of a sales system and telling stories to sell. He has had his fair share of failures and times when he wanted to quit. But like most entrepreneurs, and probably like you, he didn't quit One of his biggest learnings was that sales is a process.Through trial and lots of error, and investing in himself, he was able to sell better AND teach others to do the same. The process is simple, ask the right questions, tell stories that illustrate the point and allow your prospect to buy from you! Most importantly he's systemized it so he can teach that skills to others. He has sold millions of dollars of educational training and has now developed his own unique sales systems, Impact Sales System and Dramatic Impact Story Academy.Visit http://tomjackobs.com/

Having been an entrepreneur for 30 years, Tom Jackobs has been through a few challenges. He's definitely had more failures than successes, and he wouldn't have it any other way. He sold my fitness business which I owned for 9 years a year ago to start teaching other entrepreneurs how to use story to sell. He also quickly realized that most small business owners don't follow up with their leads, so he started teaching them how to create follow up system so they could have a conversation to share their story and make more sales. With his degree in theatre he is able to help his clients create a performance out of their presentations so it's not the same boring presentation audiences are unfortunately used to seeing. He's been a contributor to CBS Radio in Houston, a guest on Great Day Houston, Univision, Fox 26 News and The CW Houston. He's also a presenter at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Houston. “Ask for help before you need it. That is just really critical. Get the help early on if you are wantrapreneur and just starting in business. Talk to other people who have done it before. Get a mentor, get a coach and they will save you tons of wasted money and time to get your product or idea to market”…[Listen for More] Click Here for Show Notes To Listen or to Get the Show Notes go to https://wp.me/p6Tf4b-6DH

Now to say Tom has been through a few things in his 30-plus years of being an entrepreneur is an understatement. He's definitely had more failures than successes, but wouldn't have it any other way. He sold his fitness business which he owned for nine years. Now after he'd made that sale of that business, he went on to become the impact pilot, which is a business designed to help entrepreneurs generate more income through better selling strategy and using stories to sell. Man oh man, I can't tell you how much I love storytelling as a methodology of marketing and sales and communication in general. It's really really effective. Now tom has a BFA degree from DePaul University in Chicago and he holds his private pilot license for single-engine airplanes, which he's had a lifelong dream and he achieved that over five years ago. Now I wanted to say a side note, he doesn't try to have impacts in that part of his piloting, but for selling he wants a big impact. Now, he's been a contributor to CBS radio in Houston and a guest on Great Day Houston, Univision television, Fox 26 News and many other Houston-related TV programs. He's also been a presenter at the Small Business Development Center in Houston, Texas. Tom has a really unique way of kind of just cutting right through it and getting to the heart of storytelling. Every one of us, in fact you listening, you have a story to tell. This really is the genesis of the Awesomers.com podcast.
The Impact Pilot The Impact Pilot, Tom Jackobs Helps Clients Sell More Through Storytelling Tom Jackobs refers to himself as The Impact Pilot, because through storytelling he creates impact for the clients he works with. Tom hails from Iowa and Illinois but now lives in Houston, Texas. Direct Mail Kick Started His Business He creates impact for his clients through the way they tell their story about their businesses. It started 30 years ago. He was 16 years old and had a music business. This business served weddings and bar mitzvahs. He used direct mail to get his clients. Tom looked through the announcements in the paper. Check out their home addresses in the phone book and write to them. Easy, eh? He'd send a demo. A mixed-tape of the string quartet. He'd ask, "Do you want a string quartet or DJ or both?" Brides to be lined up. He booked 3 weekends a month. Still in high school. Believe it or not, The Impact Pilot is an introvert. So he didn't like to make phone calls. Instead he sent LUMPY mail (it had a cassette in it). Powerful reason to open the letter. Pinpoint targeted too. The Impact Pilot had a degree in theatre management At College, Tom earned a degree in theatre management. From De Paul University in Chicago. He got a job. In Oil and Gas. During that time he got overweight. 40 pounds overweight. In the US, that's slim of course. Tom was warned by his doctor. They were worried about his health-markers - high blood pressure, family history of heart disease for instance. So, Tom learned how to work-out and eat right. Then, he started teaching what he learned. Certified himself as a personal trainer and later opened a fitness centre by using his pension money (his 401k). 6 months later, this theatre management graduate had a failing business on his hands. He just did not know how to run a small business. How Did Tom Feel When He Realised He Was Going Under? Tom explains the run up to the hardest phone call of his life. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Tom-Jackobs-Hardest-Phone-Call.mp4 The phone call was to his Dad. He needed $10,000. His Dad came through, but at a price. Tom needed to put up his house as collateral and had to re-pay the loan at 12%. It was a lesson in life. A hard lesson. The Impact Pilot discovered he needed help. He found help. Discovered sales storytelling. He went from $100k to $500k turnover. He built the business and helped other entrepreneurs in fitness. Tom found a business coach He made the connection that he could advise others. As part of the work he did with the business coach, he travelled the world selling the programme. To other coaches. He sold $4m of product. He sold his fitness business. Now he's a free member of his own gym. The Impact Pilot as Consultant Selling the coaching programme and tapping into his degree in theatre, it was all about telling stories with the point to sell the programme. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Storyselling-coach.mp4 The workshops he put on were a training ground for him. He used stories to SELL THE PROGRAMME. It is a process. Anyone can do this? So, he has been putting together insights into how to put together stories that sell. to grab the audiences attention keep them listening to you especially now that we have so much distraction (people on their phones for example) How do you create stories that sell? It is about creating that connection with the audience. He spoke about Willie Diefenbach-Jones, from Send Out Cards (greeting cards for retention purposes), one of his clients. She was having problems converting when she spoke at events. It was all teaching. Tom advised Willie to create a HUMAN connection. He asked: "Tell me, why did you get into the cards business? Why is this important to you?" Willie told him the story of her mother and husband dying 2 days apart from each other. She started her speech that way.
