Ryan Asks Biden to Bow Out

House member becomes latest Democrat to break with nominee Rep. Pat Ryan, a Democrat whose 18th Congressional district includes Beacon, published an opinion piece in the Poughkeepsie Journal on Wednesday (July 10) calling for President Joe Biden, also a Democrat, to end his bid for re-election. Ryan, who urged Biden to "deliver on his promise to be a 'bridge' to a new generation of leaders," posted a similar message on X/Twitter on Wednesday. He becomes the eighth House Democrat and the first elected official in New York to ask Biden to step aside after his poor performance in a June 27 debate against former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee. Biden has so far brushed off the calls, saying earlier this week in a letter to congressional Democrats that he is "firmly committed" to staying in the race. Support for Trump Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican whose 17th Congressional district includes Philipstown, has endorsed former President Donald Trump but hasn't exactly been shouting from the rooftops about his decision. In a December town hall, he said he would prefer that neither Trump nor Biden were on the ballot. "I don't think either of them are able to do the job, frankly, at this point," he said. In April, he declined to tell a reporter from the Journal News whom he had voted for in the New York presidential primary, or if he had voted, although two days later he told CNN he had voted for the former president. In his op-ed, Ryan, who is up for re-election this fall and holds a House seat that Republicans have targeted to flip, recalled taking the oath of office 18 months ago. "As I stood there, on the very same ground at West Point where I took a similar oath 20 years earlier," wrote Ryan, a West Point graduate and U.S. Army veteran, "I felt the full weight and responsibility of this position. "That oath wasn't to any party, special interest or politician," he said. "As an American - as a patriot - I swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Ryan called Trump "a threat to American democracy" who has been convicted of a felony, tried to overturn the 2020 election and, if re-elected, "wants to criminalize abortion, give more tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations and gut Social Security." Ryan said that Biden is "a patriot and a person of great integrity" while acknowledging past disagreements with the president over border policies and his withdrawal in 2021 of troops from Afghanistan. However, in "countless conversations, especially over the last few weeks," Ryan said that constituents have told him they're losing faith in the country. They feel both Democrats and Republicans have failed them and that Biden and Trump, who are the two oldest presidential candidates ever presented by the parties, are "awful" choices, he said. "Let me be clear: I am asserting no moral equivalency between Biden and Trump," wrote Ryan, who said he will vote for Biden if he remains in the race. But for the good of the country and "the future of our kids and grandkids," the president should step aside, he said. "And I'll work with any patriot who wants to join me in putting country before party to get it done."

Steuben County: From School to Housing Contractors completed a state-funded project that transformed the former Bryant School in the City of Hornell into 39 apartments for lower-income families. The energy-efficient building has a public bus stop and is within a mile of the city's downtown, the state said in a news release. The project was coordinated by the New York State Homes and Community Renewal agency. The two-story, 50,000-square-foot school, which closed in 2021, was renovated and expanded by 8,500 square feet. The developers preserved the hallway tile, entrance sign, playground, trees and fenced-in greenspace, while adding a fitness center, community room with kitchen, laundry rooms and free broadband internet. New York State provided $13.2 million in funding for the $14.3 million project. New Paltz: SUNY Senior Killed in Hit-and-Run A senior at SUNY New Paltz was killed after being hit from behind on Route 208 near campus by a driver who fled the scene. The body of Raymond Rattray, 22, of New York City, was found 20 feet off the road on Jan. 24. He apparently was struck by a dark sedan at about 5 p.m. the day before while walking home from class on the south shoulder. Police said the vehicle sustained damage to its front end. Elsewhere in Ulster County, police continue to investigate a fatal hit-and-run that took place in Saugerties at about 5 p.m. on Jan. 10. Starllie Swonyoung, 21, was struck from behind while walking along the south shoulder of Route 9W with a friend. Wappingers Falls: No Action on Park Lead The state Department of Health said last week it would not take any further action to mitigate lead contamination at a Wappingers Falls park. Temple Park, near Wappingers Creek, was closed over the summer after The Wall Street Journal reported that telecommunication cables left under the creek bed may have contaminated the soil. The state shuttered the park "out of an abundance of caution" for testing, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. The Poughkeepsie paper reported on Jan. 26 that only one of 25 soil samples had more than the maximum limit of 400 parts per million of lead where children live or play. However, it noted that the federal Environmental Protection Agency recently lowered that standard to 200 ppm, and nine locations had 180 to 410 ppm. Newburgh: Housing Program Expands Making Moves, a New York State program that helps families with federal Section 8 vouchers find affordable housing, has expanded operations to Newburgh and Poughkeepsie. The program also helps families in Buffalo, Westchester County, Long Island and Ithaca locate rental properties in "higher-resourced communities." It hopes to serve 50 families in the first year of operations in the expansion areas. Making Moves is overseen by New York State Homes and Community Renewal. See hcr.ny.gov/mobility. New York City: Port Authority Collects $25M from Toll Evaders The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced Jan. 22 that it recovered more than $25 million from toll evaders in 2023, up from the $21 million in 2022. The agency's police force also issued 5,800 summonses, including 4,400 for obstructed, missing or fake license plates. It said the largest scofflaw in 2023 was the EM Padilla Trucking Co. of Weehawken, New Jersey, whose drivers evaded $201,000 in tolls. Carmel: Man Stabbed at Airsoft Game Town of Carmel police arrested a 20-year-old Bedford Hills man in connection with the stabbing of a Mount Vernon man on Jan. 28 at Hudson Valley Airsoft at the Paladin Center. Justin Pagan allegedly attacked the 33-year-old victim during a game in which players use weapons that fire foam projectiles. The three-level facility includes "a simulated apartment complex, bar, offices, bank, bodega and warehouse with barricades and obstacles." According to the Mid Hudson News, the victim was taken to Danbury Hospital with six stab wounds and a collapsed lung. Pagan was charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a...

Writer John Barry joins us on the podcast to talk his new book, "Levon Helm: Rock, Roll & Ramble—The Inside Story of the Man, the Music and the Midnight Ramble."Ringo wrote the foreword, and Roger Waters, Graham Nash and Warren Haynes are among those interviewed. Larry Campbell, who served as Levon Helm Band Musical Director and produced or co-produced Levon's three Grammy-winning solo albums, which were inspired by the Rambles, had this to say about the book:"John Barry was the perfect 'fly on the wall' during this great last chapter and final curtain call in Levon Helm's life. He was the quintessential observer from the early days of the Midnight Ramble to the end and has brilliantly captured the details and the spirit of that wonderful timein this book."Born in the Bronx, raised in the New York City suburbs of Rockland County and living in New York State's Hudson Valley since 1990, John W. Barry is an award-winning journalist with a passion for writing and a love of music. This combination has brought John to some pretty incredible places and put him in the company of some incredible people. From Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan to Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and many places in between, John's relentless pursuit of the stories, the people and the circumstances that define the world around us has enabled him to assemble the puzzle pieces of a compelling tale or two over the course of his lifetime.John is a very proud graduate of Clarkstown South High School and the State University of New York at New Paltz, where he earned a journalism degree. The latter is what brought John to Ulster County, New York, and set him on his path to Woodstock, Levon Helm Studios and the Midnight Ramble. As a journalist for the USA Today Network's Poughkeepsie Journal in Dutchess County, New York, John found himself in the center of Levon's Midnight Ramble house concerts, getting to know Levon, his band, his crew, his management team, Team Levon and, of course, his fans.Prior to serving as the music writer for the Poughkeepsie Journal, John wrote for his hometown newspaper, The Journal News, as a police reporter, covering municipal beats and writing extensively about local angles to the Northern Ireland peace process. John has also freelanced for RollingStone.com and since leaving the USA Today Network at the end of 2020, has been working as a freelance writer and blogger, and editorial consultant. In the wake of the publication of this book, John is already working on his next project and continuing to do what he enjoys most, hiking and camping in the Hudson Valley's stunning terrain, cooling off in its swimming holes and breathing in deeply its crisp night air.Purchase a copy of the Levon book here. Many residents and visitors crossing the Hudson on the Bear Mountain Bridge in the 1950s or 1960s have seen the flotilla of warships lined up along the river and wondered what they were there for. Musso, the principal chronicler of Hudson Valley historical sites, tells the story in his new book. Many listeners are likely to be familiar with his earlier 3-volume series, “Hidden Treasures of the Hudson Valley,” his regular “Dateline” columns in Gannett newspapers, his tours of historic sites, and his frequent appearances as a speaker on historical topics. With the rise of the internet and social media, news commentary has gained dominance to achieve likes and ratings to attract advertising dollars, while local newspapers have consolidated into widespread regional hubs as subscriptions have dwindled. This week we're exploring the future of journalism and the media - news versus news commentary, press release journalism versus investigative reporting, finding fact in the world of "fake news" and "alternative facts," and what that all means for local news. This week's episode features Barry Rothfeld, Retired, President and Publisher at The Poughkeepsie Journal, former editor and journalist.

National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed by Rasheed Oluwa, for The Poughkeepsie Journal, in Poughkeepsie, New York, on April 16, 2003, for an article published on April 28, 2003, titled, "In marriage, three's a crowd -- and a crime." That article was written for a "Crime Beat" section of the newspaper, regarding a local story of a man (who had not yet divorced one wife before marrying another) who had been charged with bigamy in New York. In this educational interview, Mark Henkel defined bigamy (as a a legal term for all "Secondary" marriages under law) vs. polygamy, secret or "dishonest bigamy" (unconsented fraud) vs. "honest polygamy" (consented choice), Christian Polygamy vs. Mormon Polygamy, the deep pschyological challenge for people when they first learn about unrelated consenting adult polygamy, how people often commit acts of "insanity to retain their sanity" as illustrated via a lesson-example from George Orwell's book, "1984", how normal polygamists always and adamantly opposed the criminals of Tom Green and the kidnappers of Elizabeth Smart in Utah, how the media make money by only reporting sensationalism and not the regular stories of normal polygamists not committing crimes, and many more argumentations too. (For historical reference, this interview took place before the Lawrence v. Texas decision by the US Supreme Court, later that year, on June 26, 2003.) As this interview was so comprehensive, the reporter himself even responded a number of separate times, by saying, "Cool!" http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

As one of the first black female programmers, her career goes back further than most of our guests. At her job in the IBM typing pool in the 1960s, she was asked to go home when she became pregnant with her first child. Eventually, she went back to work and pushed herself to learn programming while also raising her family. Jacqueline talks about the programming languages used decades ago, sifting through hexadecimal code, and what it was like when laptops entered the market.  She also brings her passion to a new project in the Hudson Valley in New York, excavating the artifacts of freed slaves and reconstructing what their lives were like—she just doesn’t slow down! But the plans to mark the 50th anniversary of that have not been going so well.  It's been more than a month since the team behind the Woodstock 50 festival lost its original venue. The team is searching meticulously for a new site for the highly anticipated golden jubilee anniversary gig. But just last week, applications for an alternative venue were rejected by a township in New York state. So what's been going on?
