The Short Story Club discusses a short story every meeting, before moving on to other reading recommendations. In this episode, Nell O’Bryan and Meaghan Dew discuss memory, music and nostalgia in Haruki Murakami’s ‘With the Beatles’ before moving on to their current isolation reading. If you’d like to join The Short Story Club (currently on Zoom) book in for the morning or evening meetings through our events page at https://library.yarracity.vic.gov.au, where you’ll also find information on how to access each story. Otherwise, keep an eye on our podcast and our social media channels to follow along from home. In the next meeting we’ll discuss Carmen Maria Machado’s ‘Eight Bites’. Haruki Murakami’s ‘With the Beatles’ can be downloaded through RB Digital – it’s in the February 16th issue of The New Yorker. You can also access it through The New Yorker’s website. Nell Recommends: escaping into a world of posh English people through BBC’s Pride and Prejudice or Evelyn Waugh’s ‘Brideshead Revisited’. While the latter is still in copyright in Australia you can find the 2008 adaptation on SBS on Demand. As for Jane Austen, many of her titles are available as e-books through Cloud Library. Wet t-shirts not included. She (Nell, not Jane Austen) also recommends Hannah Kent’s ‘Burial Rites’. Meaghan Recommends: More historical fiction with ‘Lincoln in the Bardo’ by George Saunders. You can find it as an e-book on Cloud Library and as an audiobook on Borrowbox. She also recommends ‘Star Crossed’ (on Cloud Library and RB Digital) or ‘The Lost Love Song’ – both from rom-com legend Minnie Darke.

“Young people are naturally so brilliant and so challenging that they challenge our norms, and rightly so. If we don’t fear them we certainly don’t respect them. We don’t give them enough of a voice. In so much of what we do we don’t value the voice of young people and their ideas. And it’s to our detriment.” – Sarah Hopkins Yarra Libraries presents author Sarah Hopkins in conversation with Briohny Doyle. Sarah discusses the experiences and research that shaped her latest novel, The Subjects. The Subjects details the path a group of teenagers are offered as an alternative to entering a correctional facility. The teenagers understand, to a degree, that their treatment is experimental – but the more they learn the more they understand about where they fit in the schemes of others. The Subjects is currently a Red Hot Read at Yarra Libraries, and you can find it, along with Briohny Doyle’s titles, at your local branch. This is an edited recording of an event at Richmond Library. Christian Homeschool Moms Podcast | Christian Homeschool Moms

Welcome to this week's podcast. This week I'm encouraging you to figure out ways to begin homeschooling for free. With so many resources at our fingertips- both online and locally- the sky is the limit for free homeschool options! Reasons to consider homeschooling for free: You don't have to spend a fortune, but you can. I like to set my disclaimer that it's perfectly okay to spend money on your kids however you see fit. After all, they're your kids. But just know that you and I don't have to spend a fortune to accomplish the goal of educating our kids. Be willing to spend on quality items and services. This is a must for our family since we love art and music. We invest our money into long term goals to equip our kids with certain music and art skills that we may not possess. I feel like it's money well spent- but I have to make choices about where my money goes. Rather than spending a fortune on curriculum, many times I choose to place it on services that would be hard to come by in curriculum or book formats. This is where you have to decide what's more important: products or services- and how much, if any, you want to spend on either. Homeschooling for free comes with a price: the price of making intentional choices! Be very selective about your time. What does homeschooling for free look like for your family? Is it always about money, or does it include how you spend your time? Cutting back on time outside of the home has helped us this semester to focus on what really matters in our home. It also reduces the amount of money we spend while out and about! In our case, time is just as important as money, and I've found great improvements in our lifestyle by not only looking at our bank accounts but also our time management. Resources mentioned on this podcast Student News (Now CNN10) -student news in 10 minutes Library resources: look for Lynda.com, audiobook services and apps: Hoopla Digital, RBDigital, Enki, interlibrary loans Languages: Duolingo, Mango Languages National Geographic Learning Resources: Khan Academy- Khan Academy is a nonprofit with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. Enchanted Learning- Enchanted Learning Software creates children's educational web sites and games designed to stimulate creativity, learning, enjoyment, and imagination.
