EPISODE 29 - “Jan Sterling: Old Hollywood Star of the Month” - 04/01/2024 Our “Star of the Month” is the fabulous JAN STERLING, who was married to our March “Star of the Month,” PAUL DOUGLAS. Blonde, beautiful, and often deadly on screen, Sterling started in theatre, but made a name for herself portraying tough dames, femme fatales, and sexy seductresses in films such as “Caged,” “Ace In the Hole” and “The High and the Mighty.” However, her upbringing was quite different from these wayward women she played so convincingly; she was actually from a very wealthy and prominent family. She had a stellar career, but many heartbreaks off camera. This week, we discuss the life and career of this most memorable lady.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Jan Sterling: Everything You Need To Know (2014), by Billy Vasquez; The Encyclopedia of Film Actors (2003), by Barry Monush; The Illustrated Who's Who of the Cinema (1983), by Ann Lloyd and Graham Fuller; Quinlan's Illustrated Registry of Film Stars (1986), by David Quinlan; “Jan Sterling, 82, Blonde Actress Who Made Film Noir A Specialty” Obituary, March 29, 2004, The New York Times; IMDBPro.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Tycoon (1947), starring John Wayne, Laaine Day, and Anthony Quinn; Johnny Belinda (1948), starring Jane Wyman, Lew Ayres, and Agnes Moorhead; Caged (1950), starring Eleanor Parker, Agnes Moorhead, and Faye Emerson; Appointment With Danger (1950), starring Robert Walker and Joan Leslie; The Mating Season (1950), starring Gene Tierney, John Lund, and Thelma Ritter; Ace In The Hole (1951), starring Kirk Douglas; Rhubarb (1951), starring Ray Miland; Flesh and Fury (1952), starring Tony Curtis; Sky Full of Moon (1952), starring  Split Second (1953), starring Stephen McNally; Pony Express (1953), starring Charlton Heston and Rhonda Fleming; The Vanquished (1953), starring John Payne and Coleen Gray; Alaska Seas (1954), starring Robert Ryan; The High and the Mighty (19543), starring John Wayne, Robert Stack, Claire Trevor, and Laraine Day; Woman's Prison (1955), starring Ida Lupino, Pyllis Thaxter, Audrey Totter, and Howard Duff; Female on the Beach (1955), starring Joan Crawford and Jeff Chandler; The Harder They Fall (1956), starring Humphrey Bogart and Rod Steiger; 1984 (1956), starring Edmond O'Brien and Michael Redgrave; The Female Animal (1958), starring Hedy Lamar, Jane Powell, and George Nader; Kathy O (1958), starring Dan Duryea and Patty McCormick; High School Confidential (1958), starring Russ Tamblyn and Mamie Van Doren; Love In A Goldfish Bowl (1961), staring Fabian, Tommy Sands, and Majel Barrett; The Incident (1967), Starring Martin Sheen, Beau Bridges, and Tony Musante;  The Minx (1969), starring Robert Roden and Shirley Parker; First Monday in October (1981), Starring Walter Matthau and Jill Clayburgh; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Maxwell Smart (Don Adams), the dimwitted super-spy from the hit TV series from the 1960s, "Get Smart" returned in 1980 for a brand new, racier adventure.  Entitled The Nude Bomb, it has lost that title over the years in favor of the more TV-programming friendly The Return of Maxwell Smart.  The gist of the film is that an agent from the super-terrorist organization, KAOS, is threatening to rid the world of all clothing if demands aren't met, using a bomb capable of destroying all forms of fabric.  It's up to Agent 86 of PITS, Maxwell Smart, to put an end to these nefarious plans, although wherever he turns, trouble seems to follow.  He suspects there may be a double agent trying to put a wrench in the works, but who? Andrea Howard, Dana Elcar, Vittorio Gassman, Norman Lloyd, Sylvia Kristel, Rhonda Fleming, Pamela Hensley, Bill Dana also appear in this film directed by Clive Donner. Erratum Note: Writer/producer Alan Spencer reached out to me on Twitter to let me know that a comment I made about "all" Eugene Roche's scenes being re-shot after his departure due to illness is not entirely accurate, as you can see him in a few long shots. He recommends the new Kino Lorber Blu-ray release of The Nude Bomb for a vast wealth of information on the making of the film. Although I released this episode on 12/13/19, three days after the release of the Blu-ray on 12/10/19, I did the research on The Nude Bomb and recorded the episode approximately two weeks prior and did not have the Blu-ray's supplemental material or Alan Spencer's commentary to consult, so I do apologize for this discrepancy. This show seems to mark the abandonment of the series rather than its logical close. There were 39 shows in the first season for General Electric but this is only the 36th. The usual ‘discussion’ between Bing and Ken Carpenter, implies that they are summing up all the previous items of this nature but astonishingly, at the close of the program, we hear Bing saying, “I hope to see you all again, next week, when our guest will be Miss Rosemary Clooney” This information is re-iterated by Ken Carpenter in the closing announcements. In fact, it was planned that Gary Crosby would take over with his own show on the following Sunday. The confusion may have been due to Gary Crosby having a motor accident on May 24 near San Jose when a Mexican laborer called Felix Olivares (age 24) was killed. Gary was treated for a lacerated nose and an injured knee. Fortunately Gary had not been drinking but the Mexicans had been. Bing was however the recipient of suits totaling $155,000 as Gary was a minor. No charges were filed though and County officials said neither driver was at fault. Gary’s debut had to be postponed until June 13 and his radio program replaced Bing’s on CBS for the summer period of thirteen weeks before Gary began his third year at Stanford. Guests on Gary’s opening show included Jane Russell and Rhonda Fleming. Ken Carpenter was the announcer, John Scott Trotter furnished the musical support, and Bill Morrow was the writer. Murdo MacKenzie directed the show. In other words, Gary appears to have simply stepped into Bing’s shoes for the summer season.

Another Kind of Distance: A Spider-Man, Time Travel, Twin Peaks, Film, Grant Morrison and Nostalgia Podcast

The Last Outpost aka Cavalry Charge is the quintessential (although certainly not the best) "Civil War Western", a staple mid-century genre which performed yeoman ideological work on a pair of dubious fronts: 1. Doubling down (often literally, by offering up equally likable brothers on either side of the conflict) on the "revisionist" take on the "War Between The States" that dominated the historiography from the 1920s into the early 1960s; and 2. painting the "unsettled" western frontier as the staging ground for a post-bellum American "reunification" through genocidal race war against the region's rightful inhabitants.   The Gipper delivers a terrific performance as Capt. Vance Britten, a character whose psychological underpinnings are so vile that they cannot even be acknowledged by the film. He's a dashing Baltimorean who has crossed over to the Rebels as "a matter of principle". What principle? Well, it's not defending his state, obviously, since Maryland remained within the Union. Guess what that leaves? You have to guess, because this screenplay doesn't come anywhere near mentioning slavery. It does, however, wear its white supremacist heart on its blue and gray sleeves when it fabricates a ridiculous pretext (out of whole cloth) for a temporary North/South alliance against righteously enraged Apache warriors.   This is our earliest Pine-Thomas Reagan, and here we find the original template for the now-famous Fruit Company Gunboat Charge which furnished the climax of Tropic Zone. And it's our last chance to see friend of the show Rhonda Fleming.    Pretty much forgotten (and nigh impossible to find) today, this movie was a big hit for Paramount in 1951, and was so fondly remembered that it was mustered out of mothballs ten years later in an effort to capitalize upon the Civil War's centenary. Red Time For Bonzo: A Marxist-Reaganist Film Podcast (Ronald Reagan Filmography)

Another Kind of Distance: A Spider-Man, Time Travel, Twin Peaks, Film, Grant Morrison and Nostalgia Podcast

This week on the podcast, a little-seen Pine-Thomas "Far-Easter" that has been identified (by one or two dreamers - i.e. 20% of the living people who've watched it) as an antecedent of the Indiana Jones films. Why? Well, there's the hat. You need more than that to hang a theory on? You might be out of luck. HONG KONG reunites the Gipper with friend of the podcast Rhonda Fleming during the last days of the Maoist revolution. The film takes its name from the British-occupied city, but a lot of the action takes place within civil war-ridden China itself. It's got a bit of a Cold War feel to it (Reagan says "Commies"), but, ultimately, the narrative pulls back from such grandly geopolitical concerns to tell a sub-Hitchcockian story of child-abduction and chicanery perpetrated by a grotesquely caricatured Chinese antique dealer/criminal played by Marvin Miller (later the voice of Robby the Robot and never, incidentally, a person who should be playing Asian characters).    We take a little time to consider the "Solid Citizen" Reagan persona (as it was understood by 1952 audiences) and ponder its long-ranging political impact. Gareth and Dave also take a little detour into the history of the Pine-Thomas production company, while Romy takes a phone call. We close out the 'cast with a review of the 20 films we've covered so far. Quite a clambake!     Novel suggestion: Peter Delacorte's Time on My Hands Follow us at: Facebook Follow Romy on Twitter at @rahrahtempleton Follow Gareth on Twitter at @helenreddymades Follow David on Twitter at @milescoverdale   "Driving Reagan theme' by Gareth Hedges

Another Kind of Distance: A Spider-Man, Time Travel, Twin Peaks, Film, Grant Morrison and Nostalgia Podcast

Tropic Zone may not be much of a film, but it proved to be a hell of a conversation piece for your Bonzo panelists! We delve into the afterlife of the WW2-era "Good Neighbor Policy", the sadly stunted career of co-star Estrelita Rodriguez, the relationship of this 1950s A-minus Pine-Thomas production to Warner Brothers' Cagney-Sheridan-O'Brien extravaganza Torrid Zone (1940), and, above all, the economic Imaginarium of American corporate and paramilitary meddling in the affairs of Central and South American countries during the 20th century. Tropic Zone presents its banana-based battles in strangely depoliticized and context-free terms - so depoliticized and context-free, in fact, that Romy, Gareth, and Dave could not agree at all on any of the stakes of the various conflicts depicted and referred to in the film. Was Ronald Reagan dislodged from his initial two-term Presidency of Bananas by leftist guerrillas or CIA backed death squads? And how about the film's central struggle against the evil Lukats? Is this a serious proletarian uprising? Or just a way to solidify Rhonda Fleming's "benevolent" despotism over the fictional nation of Puerto Barrancas? If this was a real country, the answer would be fairly obvious, but here on the island of populist fable, you're free to read the events in just about any way you want (at least until the climactic charge of the United Fruit Company gunboats).  Also: Gareth and Romy argue over the probable cause of humanity's imminent self-immolation.     Outro Music: "I'll Always Love You" by Estrelita Rodriguez Follow us at: Facebook Follow Romy on Twitter at @rahrahtempleton Follow Gareth on Twitter at @helenreddymades Follow David on Twitter at @milescoverdale   Intro Theme: "Driving Reagan" by Gareth Hedges

The RED TIME FOR BONZO gang sifts an unexpected nugget out of the silt of Reagan's waning film career - although, in retrospect, no one should ever count an Allan Dwan film out before it's watched (particularly when Dwan is working with cinematographer John Alton and a crackerjack fifties cast that includes John Payne, Rhonda Fleming, Coleen Gray, and Chubby Johnson). The Gipper turns in tremendous work here, too, fusing his character's seemingly incongruous rigidity, resourcefulness and capacity for empathy into harmonious aspects of a genuinely unique being in the "oater" canon. Your hosts also make a spirited effort to situate this ballad of "Cowpoke" and "Tennessee" within the queer film tradition; discuss the archetypal function of The Prospector; and entertain a sad and decidedly uninspiring analogy between the dysfunctional "Whig" party of the 1830s and the rudderless #resistance crowd of today. Listen to Bret Harte's original tale here. Now is a time for choosing. Choose RED TIME FOR BONZO! The Clanton’s and the Earp’s have the final showdown at the O.K. corral. Based on real life events, the film covers the lives of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday leading up to the fateful gunfight. In fact the gunfight is really only a small part of the whole movie. It’s a film more about the relationship between the two main characters, the meaning of loyalty and friendship, and the lengths to which one will go to uphold one’s honor. John Sturgess directed and Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Rhonda Fleming, Jo Van Fleet and a very young Dennis Hopper starred in this 1957 retelling of the tale. And to top it off, the music was composed by the incomparable Dimitri Tiomkin.
