Evan Handler is beloved by millions for portraying Harry Goldenblatt, divorce-lawyer-turned-husband to Kristin Davis's Charlotte York, on HBO's groundbreaking series, and films, “Sex and the City,” it's current MAX follow-up, “And Just Like That,” as well as Charlie Runkle on Showtime's seven season “Californication.” In addition to authoring two highly acclaimed books, Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors, and It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive, Evan has played leading roles in ABC's “It's Like, You Know…,” and NBC's “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” STARZ' “Power,” and made numerous memorable guest appearances on “Lost,” “The West Wing,” “Six Feet Under,” “Necessary Roughness,” and “Friends.” In 2000, Evan played Larry Fine in ABC's TV movie “The Three Stooges,” followed by additional “real life” portrayals of Lloyd Blankfein in HBO's “Too Big to Fail,” Alan Dershowitz in FX's “People vs. OJ Simpson,” and Hal Prince in FX's “Fosse/Verdon,” each of which garnered numerous wide-ranging awards. On the big screen, Evan played a leading role in Ron Howard's “Ransom,” starring Mel Gibson, and featured and leading roles Oliver Stone's “Natural Born Killers,” “Taps,” “The Chosen,” and “Sweet Lorraine.” He's currently visible in David Duchovny's directorial effort, “Reverse the Curse.” Prior to his work in film and television, Evan earned acclaim in seven Broadway productions, all performed between his twenty-first and thirtieth birthdays, and all in spite of losing nearly five years of that span to his fight against a supposedly “incurable” leukemia. During this time Evan starred in Broadway productions of “Six Degrees of Separation,” “I Hate Hamlet,” “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” “Broadway Bound” and “Master Harold...and the boys.” Evan also worked extensively in off-Broadway and regional theater at NY's Public Theater, Manhattan Theater Club, Playwrights Horizons, Seattle Rep, and Steppenwolf, performing early plays by Donald Margulies, Robert Schenkkan, Jez Butterworth, and numerous others. Evan's first book, Time On Fire, details his unlikely recovery from the leukemia diagnosed in the mid-1980s. His second book, It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive, describes the twenty-year period post-illness, and Handler's surprisingly circuitous journey toward gratitude, using tales of serial dating, absurd relationships, unexpected depressions, and, ultimately, lasting love and a miracle conception. Emmy Award and multiple NAACP Image Award-winning film, television and stage veteran Joe Morton is perhaps best known for his role as Rowan Pope in the television series “Scandal.” Morton’s television credits include a recurring role as lawyer Daniel Golden on “The Good Wife,” on the Network; five seasons as scientist Henry Deacon in the Emmy-nominated series “Eureka”; “The Cosby Show” spinoff “A Different World”; the Kyra Sedgwick-produced “Proof”; and “Grace & Frankie.” In 2016 he portrayed the role of Roy Wilkins alongside Bryan Cranston in the Emmy-nominated biopic “All the Way,” adapted from the Tony Award-winning Robert Schenkkan play.   In 2016 Morton appeared in the feature film “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” as Silas Stone, and he reprised the role in November 2017 in “Justice League.” His additional feature film credits include playing the title character in John Sayles’ “The Brother from Another Planet” and roles in “Terminator 2: Judgement Day,” “American Gangster,” “What Lies Beneath,” “Blues Brothers 2000” and “The Astronaut’s Wife.”   Recently, Morton starred as the titular role alongside Tom Hanks in Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles’ production of “Henry IV.” Staged by Tony Award-winning director Daniel Sullivan, the critically raved show featured Morton as Henry IV and Hanks as Sir John Falstaff. In spring 2016, Morton portrayed the groundbreaking comedian Dick Gregory in the one-man show “Turn Me Loose,” executive produced by Grammy Award winner John Legend. Morton was honored with the NAACP Theatre Lifetime Achievement Award and was awarded the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play. Also, he was nominated for the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance. In October 2017, he brought “Turn Me Loose” to Los Angeles at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.   Born in Harlem, Morton was raised in a military family and spent parts of his childhood in West Germany and Okinawa, Japan, before finishing school in New York. After attending Hofstra University, Morton debuted on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning musical “Hair,” followed by his starring role in “Raisin,” the Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun,” which earned him a Tony nomination and Theatre World Award for his portrayal as the embittered Walter Lee Younger. In addition, he appeared in David Hare’s “Stuff Happens” at the National Theatre in London as Colin Powell and played Serge in “Art” on Broadway (and in London’s West End) with Judd Hirsch and George Wendt.   Morton is a huge proponent of diversity in Hollywood and uses his platform to express the need for more contemporary non-white roles in television and film. Morton devotes his rare free time to writing, playing his guitar and recording music. Music has been a huge part of his life, and his talent has led him to write and score a multitude of songs for various film and TV projects.

I went to go see a show, as they say in the business. And that show was “Building The Wall” at The Park Theatre. Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Robert Schenkkan’s hard-hitting piece. I got to speak to Angela and Trevor about their thoughts on the play at the Park Theatre, performing in front of major theatre stars, the immediacy of this new piece and what keeps bringing them back to the theatre.

If you enjoyed Robert Schenkkan's Kentucky Cycle, directed by Kate Carruthers at Bainbridge Performing Arts in the spring of 2014, you won't want to miss his newest play, Building the Wall, which will be presented at BPA for one weekend only, February 9-11. In the context of a riveting prison interview between a historian and the former warden of an immigration detention facility, Building the Wall explores the potential consequences of our current administration's immigration policies. The results are deeply disturbing. Listen here as BCB's Diane Walker talks with directors Kate Carruthers and Barbara Deering and actors Elena Flory-Barnes and Chip Wood about their motivations for tackling this play, and about the challenges and opportunities involved in producing a play that explores the dark side of complicity. Building the Wall will be shown at BPA for three performances only: Friday & Saturday, February 9th and 10th @ 7:30 pm, and Sunday, February 11th @ 3 pm, with a Pay-What-You-Can Preview Thursday, February 8 @ 7:30 pm. Post-performance talk-backs with the play's cast and directors will also feature commentary from Althea Paulson, a retired attorney, now accredited by the Department of Justice to provide legal representation to immigrants through KIAC, and Dr. Jacqueline Helfgott (Sunday only), a criminologist and chair of the Seattle University Criminal Justice Department. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Emmy Award Winner Joe Morton of ABC's Scandal. Joe has over 40 years of experience in theatre, television and film and has become a dominating presence on Shonda Rhimes' groundbreaking series. Often referred to as the 'Monologue King,' Morton's dialogue has been communicated almost exclusively in eloquent intervals delivering poignant speeches that are both singular and blistering, whilst addressing class, race and privilege; topics that are rarely covered in primetime television. As a central and lethal focal point throughout the series, critics and audiences alike came to understand that “Rowan” is the seemingly evil mastermind behind nearly all of the nefarious events that have unfolded.  2016 has been Joe's busiest year! Morton recently made an appearance in Zack Snyder's BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE playing the role of 'Dr. Silas Stone' of S.T.A.R. Labs, the father of 'Victor Stone,' the metahuman better known as Cyborg, who is set to appear in countless films slated for release over the course of the next four years. Morton also portrayed the role of NAACP leader Roy Wilkins alongside Bryan Cranston in the critically-acclaimed HBO Lyndon B. Johnson biopic ALL THE WAY, adapted from the Tony-winning Robert Schenkkan play, directed by Jay Roach and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Last but not least, Morton returned to his theater roots as he portrays the groundbreaking comedian Dick Gregory in the one-man show TURN ME LOOSE at The Westside Theatre in New York City, receiving rave reviews. The New York Times

Who knew that the discharge petition—signed by members of the House of Representatives to bring a bill from committee to the floor—could be good material for a Tony Award-winning play and HBO feature film? In this episode, Professors Julian Zelizer and Sam Wang interview Robert Schenkkan whose play “All the Way” about Lyndon B. Johnson has been brought from the stage to the screen. “All the Way” is a play and film depicting LBJ’s efforts to enact the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and his re-election victory against Republican candidate Barry Goldwater. Schenkkan is an American screenwriter, actor and playwright. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1992 for his play “The Kentucky Cycle” and his play “All the Way” earned the 2014 Tony Award for Best Play. He has three Emmy nominations and one Writers Guild of America Award. The conversation explores how artists encourage us to think about politics beyond the scope of the media or academia and, in unique ways, teach Americans how politics work. Through plays such as “All the Way,” Zelizer and Wang discuss with Schenkkan how the arts have opened up conversations about politics and play an important role in an era when many Americans seem distrustful.

The film captures the first year of Lyndon B. Johnson's presidency after Kennedy's assassination catapults him into the White House and he takes on the Civil Rights Movement and the war in Vietnam. Hilary has been making a name for herself on the indie film scene with recent film festival films “Like You Mean It” and “Other People” which opened the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and was one of the most talked about films this year.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story erroneously said Lyndon B. Johnson was forced to resign in 1969. LBJ chose not to run for re-election in 1968. Leave it to a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright to find something epic about a controversial figure in U.S. history. “When we say somebody is ‘Shakespearean,’ he really was that,” says Robert Schenkkan about President Lyndon B. Johnson. “Outsized, not just physically but in his virtues, his vices, his ambition, his hunger, his success, his failures, in his flaws and ultimately, in his tragedy."

Robert Schenkkan’s All the Way, this year’s Tony winner for best play and for its leading actor, Bryan Cranston, was a hefty drama about Lyndon Johnson and the aftermath of the Kennedy assassination. But, in fact, it was only half the story: The Great Society is the name of Schenkkan’s sequel. The new play made its world premiere this summer at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and will be seen this fall, alongside All the Way, at the Seattle Repertory Theater. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood traveled to Ashland, Ore., to see the new production that focuses on LBJ's administration from 1965-1968.

Actor Bryan Cranston’s roles keep getting bigger. He gained fame for his work on the TV sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle,” then went on to even greater acclaim — and three Emmy awards — for his work on the drama “Breaking Bad.” Now he’s making his Broadway debut playing a bigger character than either Malcolm’s father Hal Wilkerson, or the “Breaking Bad” high-school-teacher-cum-meth-dealer, Walter White. In the new play All the Way, Cranston is Lyndon Baines Johnson, president of the United States. It’s the first year of Johnson’s administration, immediately after the assassination of JFK, and he’s working with every political fiber in his being to pass the Civil Rights Act. Written by Robert Schenkkan, All the Way is directed by Bill Rauch and can be seen at the Neil Simon Theatre. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood asks if Cranston measures up to the Johnson Act — that is, playing a real-life character with a well-known exterior and a complicated inner life.
