The Power and Complexity of Thought Work: Navigating Emotions, Intuition, and Change "Thought work" has become a popular buzzword, especially in the coaching and self-development industries. Understanding and applying thought work strategies effectively involves exploring thoughts and the interconnectedness of our emotions, intuition, and behaviors. Going Deeper We hear a lot about thought work, but there is more to it to change our outcomes. Thought work is not merely about focusing on cognitive processes; it dives deeper into the intricate connection between thoughts, emotions, and actions. Often, thought work can be detrimental. The Essence of Thought Work Strategies Thought work involves more than just thinking positive thoughts. It includes mindset and belief work, diving into how our thoughts influence our feelings and actions. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, a widely recognized model, highlights that our thoughts create emotions, which determine our actions. So, in this model, understanding and intentionally guiding our thoughts is crucial for personal growth and transformation. Despite the benefits of thought work strategies, it's essential to recognize their limitations. Not all feelings stem directly from thoughts. Emotions can arise independently, whether driven by past experiences, relationships, or from unprocessed trauma. Ignoring these emotions and focusing only on thought work can be detrimental. Intuition and Emotional Awareness It is important to remember that thoughts create feelings, but not all feelings are created from thoughts. We have underlying emotions and past experiences that create our feelings. Our bodies possess innate wisdom, often providing physical reactions to different situations. These visceral responses can guide our decision-making. Acknowledging these reactions allows us to tap into our intuition and align our actions with our true selves. When pivoting your business, what are the things to do and not to do to pivot successfully? Successfully pivoting your business isn't as complicated as you might think. The first step is identifying who fits the new soulmate client description in your community. These people will become your low-hanging fruit. Be consistent when pivoting your business. Jen has already been talking about time management but with stepmoms, not specifically entrepreneurs. However, because she has entrepreneurs within her community of stepmoms, time management should continue to be a consistent focus. Communication is crucial for successfully pivoting your business. People will respect that you are upfront with them about changing your business. Invite them to continue to follow your journey. Even if they are not your new ideal client, they may become your new ideal client. In addition, if people in your community fit the new ideal client description, they will become your support system, first clients, or source of word-of-mouth referrals. What do you do about your podcast when changing your business? If you are pivoting your business and have a podcast, you may feel you have additional problems on your hands. However, you can simplify this transition. When you have built a successful podcast that is highly ranked, has a following, and has many reviews, there is no reason to scrap what you've built and start over. Pivoting a business can be time-intensive and overwhelming. Don't add starting your podcast over from scratch to your to-do list if you don't have to. Remember that you have a built-in audience who will follow you to the new podcast and help spread the word because they already know, love, and trust you. On the new podcast graphic, you can include the phrase, formerly known as, so that people can readily recognize that you are the host and will be sharing the same quality of content. You can keep your brand assets to help you stay recognizable and capitalize on the brand you've already built. Incorporating your former key phrases with your new podcast allows you to maintain some SEO stability as you transition the show. This means your name, keywords relating to your soulmate clients, and the solution you provide for them, i.e., time management for women, time management for stepmoms, time management for entrepreneurs, time management for women entrepreneurs, and time management for entrepreneurs who are stepmoms. If your focus was formerly on time management for stepmoms, now you are linking time management to your new audience of women entrepreneurs. Your URL is important - take it with you. Any time you change your business name or podcast name and URL, redirect the old URL to the new URL. That way, if people search for your past name or URL, they will be redirected to your new show and business. This will help you avoid broken links. Learn more about and connect with Jen Rogers. It's time for a business detox! Clear your heart and mind and better see what God has in store for you and your business. God has a purpose and calling for each of us and wants us to stay aligned with Him. What is a business detox? If you feel overwhelmed or like you are spinning in circles with a never-ending to-do list, maybe it's time to step back and listen for God's voice. Maybe you need to hear God more clearly to fully understand your purpose and what He's calling you to. When you more clearly hear God's voice, you will have more direction and confidence in your business endeavors. Having more direction and confidence will allow you to grow and scale with simplicity and at a faster rate. Allow God to transform you for a business detox. In Romans 12:2, Paul tells us, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will." When we step into faith, we allow God to transform us. Often, transformation is what is needed for us to clearly hear God's voice and experience the growth He is calling us to. What is a business detox? We need to purge our old thoughts, ways, and even clients to move forward to grow and scale our businesses. God gave Andrea the verse Hebrews 12:1, which reads, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." We are to throw off everything that hinders us from hearing God's will for us. There are things that hinder us that aren't sin. Whatever feels like dead weight that is stopping you from stepping into the business God has for you needs to be thrown off. Building a business is a process. You must go through each phase or step to reach the next level. But eventually, you need to be willing to move from one phase to the next. Andrea used the example of riding a bike and removing the training wheels. Read the full show notes and access all links. We all need advice from time to time. Many of us are blessed to have had advice passed down to us from people we love. When the best advice ever received is shared, it can influence the trajectory of our lives and businesses. The 300th episode of The Robyn Graham Show is a commemorative event. To celebrate, Robyn asked former guests to share the best advice ever received, that influenced their lives or businesses. The pieces of advice are outlined below. The women featured have all had inspiring journeys and I know you'll learn from their interviews as much as you'll be inspired by their best piece of advice! The best advice ever received Two pieces of advice that were shared with me have helped me focus on what's important. The first is from my father, “If you wait until something is perfect, it will never happen.” I'm pretty sure he probably took this from Ecclesiastes 11:4 which reads Those who wait for perfect weather will never plant seeds; those who look at every cloud will never harvest crops. The second piece of advice I love is from my God-father, “Work hard and love harder.” Read the full show notes and access all links. Are you a high-achieving, type-A woman who is stressed or pushing yourself almost to burnout? If yes, you need strategies to avoid or treat adrenal fatigue. The adrenal glands speak to the hypothalamus and the thyroid gland. Often, when someone is experiencing symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, or is stressed or burned out, the adrenal glands are the place to begin to evaluate treatment options. There are nutrition strategies to avoid adrenal fatigue, give you more energy, and help you achieve sustainable health. In addition, you need to change your thought process from more is better. This isn't necessarily true, in fact, and your body needs rest and you must de-stress to get your hormones back in order. Food and nutrition also influences your brain and your mental health. Start with diet and exercise - when appropriate Robyn, as a former pharmacist, emphasized that Western medicine, or pharmaceuticals, are great when appropriate. But nutrition and exercise are very important and often, the best place to begin before starting medication therapy. However, there may be times when both are necessary to get the body and/or brain regulated to a normal state. Every person responds differently to each treatment therefore, it's hard to say how long you can try one or the other to know if the therapy is working. Hormones may take 3 to 6 months to regulate once medical or non-medical therapies are initiated. Medication may speed up results, however, it is individual-specific. And people may feel worse before they feel better. This is why you need to work with an expert in the area of the disease you are experiencing. It's important to notice little shifts. You may be focused on big results, especially with weight loss or energy, but when you notice small shifts, you will see progress and build momentum. What are the adrenal glands? The adrenal glands are tiny, almond-sized glands that sit in the back body above each kidney. They are small but mighty in terms of function. The purpose of the adrenal glands is to process incoming stress and help the body respond to the stresses effectively to help the body stay as close to homeostasis as possible. Adrenal glands also influence the immune system. In addition, the adrenal glands work with the thyroid to manage metabolism. They have many additional functions including fluid regulation, digestion, and brain health. Read the full show notes and access all links. Download the Intro to SEO for Entrepreneurs video. What happens after you publish your book? How do you maintain the momentum to continue marketing and selling your book? Once your book is published, you don't get to relax. You still need to market your book if you want to continue to get sales and reviews, which ultimately increases sales. Post-publication, you still need to market your book In this Thinking it Through Wins and Wisdom episode of The Robyn Graham Show, Connie Jo Miller asked Robyn how to market your book post-publication. As a new author who reached Amazon best-seller status, Connie Jo Miller wants to continue building momentum for increased book sales. Strategies to market your book Humble brag - if you don't tell people about your book, and that you are an author, they won't know. When you have the opportunity, tell your friends and people you meet that you are an author. Include search engine optimization on your "author" website. Write blog posts about your book, your author experience, your creative process, etc. to include depth of SEO to help others find you. Be specific about the genre you are publishing in. Host or go to local events. This includes your local library, networking meetings, conferences, schools, etc. If you are like Connie Jo and are a children's author, do a read-along or story-time at the library or a local bookstore. Email list - send reminders to your email list about your book and your author journey. Do this especially around holidays so that people understand how great it is to give books, your book especially, as a gift. Ask people who have read your book to write a book review. This will help booksellers see that your book is well received and they will promote it for you. Donate books to the local library or schools. Children will like it and want to buy it or gift it. In addition, you can donate a book or raffle basket for a fundraiser to increase awareness. Create a lovey or stuffed animal to accompany the book. Do podcast interviews. Connie Jo loved the word bungalow: how it sounded and the picture it brought to her mind. Bungalow was the first word on her “Words I Love” list. Many, many have followed. If Connie Jo reads or hears an usual new word, she has to stop, look it up, and write it down. British murder mystery shows have added many words to her list. Do you have self-confidence? Has self-doubt caused you to question whether you are enough or worthy? You can eliminate self-doubt (or at least alleviate it) by using communication strategies to take action and improve self-confidence. Check out episode 231 with Debra Roberts and learn more communication skills for handling difficult conversations. Where does self-doubt come from? Self-doubt, which results in overthinking, comes from how we were brought up. Our upbringing continues to be part of us, we carry it with us. In addition, self-doubt comes from how we've been culturally conditioned in society. But not to fear, you can eliminate self-doubt if you take action to change your mindset. We are constantly underestimating ourselves. Comparison and imposter syndrome play a significant part in self-doubt. Women often underestimate themselves internally and sometimes misrepresent themselves externally. The power of your voice to improve self-confidence They may be exceptional leaders and experts but misrepresent themselves, for example, in their voice, they don't project their voice, they don't speak with conviction. Another example is upspeak, which is when you end a statement with a question mark. Doing so makes you appear less credible. Punctuation will also make a difference in how confident and credible you seem. For example, when you introduce yourself, say your name and pause before going on to add more details. To use your voice to improve self-confidence, record yourself or have a friend or coach evaluate with you. Speak with conviction, smile, and keep your voice light as well as projected. In addition, have vocal variety, change your volume, pitch, and pace so that you come across with more interest. Another important factor for credibility is the power of the pause. When you don't pause, you can seem nervous and out of control to the audience. This is important because people don't listen well to people who seem out of control. So pause occasionally. Your voice can make you more interesting. Using your voice also helps build an emotional connection and trust with your community and audience. Read the full show notes and access all links. Who do you believe you are? What you believe about yourself determines the decisions you make and the results you achieve. When you believe, you succeed. Who you believe yourself to be is a factor in the amount of success you'll have. If you don't believe in yourself you won't take the steps necessary to grow and become. You must know who you are if you want to succeed. As Christian business owners, Christ empowers you to do big things and to have a big impact. Making decisions like a CEO As small business owners, you are the CEO of your business. The more you believe in yourself, the better your decisions will be. A very significant decision you need to make is what is your best offer for your best client. Many times we as women labor over decisions, questioning the what-ifs. Therefore it's important to learn to evaluate, to think in terms of your best client, and to make decisions without overthinking them. Quite often, indecision is what holds you back. You have to believe in yourself, in God's purpose for you, and in your soulmate clients, that they need you. Indecision is a decision. Don't be double-minded. No is the default for not making a decision. Making a decision is not a one-step process. If you make a decision but then things don't happen fast enough, for example selling a new offer, then you change your mind. Making a decision is a two-part process. The first step is making a choice. Secondly, you must make a commitment to your choice. Three key steps to grow a successful business: Belief in yourself, your purpose, what God can do in your life, and in your soulmate clients Making decisions, sticking to the decisions, not wavering on your decisions when you don't sell quickly Build a foundation for your business, before relying on social media, by differentiating yourself from all others in your niche Evaluate your decisions by mapping them out. Pen to paper is very powerful. Create a strategy for making decisions. But, don't stop there, stay committed to the decisions. Your brain knows so much. Take what's in it and put it on paper so that you can capture and visualize it. When you believe, you succeed. You must believe in who you are and whose you are (a child of God), and you will be more confident in the decisions you make. In addition, your belief in your purpose and your soulmates is important for ultimate growth and success. Read the full show notes and access all links. Building this intimate connection through podcasting increases brand awareness, but most importantly you build trust which inspires them to buy from you. Owning a business is not for the faint of heart. It takes hard work, discipline, and determination. The good news is, hard work is always rewarded. Let's face it, owning a business can be challenging. I often hear people say that they became an entrepreneur because it would be easier than working a 9-5. Maybe that's true but I'm not convinced. Entrepreneurship requires a lot of hard work. And that hard work is always rewarded. However, if you don't work hard, you will not succeed, no matter what. Talent is a blessing from above, but God doesn't expect you to hold that talent on a pedestal without working hard to embody it, develop it, master it, and share it. In other words, work hard and use the gifts God has given you. In fact, Scripture has a lot to say about hard work. Success comes from hard work Proverbs 14:23 reminds us: "All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty." This verse emphasizes that hard work is always rewarded by bringing a profit. The opposite, mere talk, results in poverty. I've seen this over the years when working with clients. Those who were not afraid of hard work, who were willing to roll up their sleeves and dig in, and who didn't make excuses, achieved the profit level they wanted. However, those who simply talked about what they wanted and what they were going to do to get it did not reach their goals. Hard work is always rewarded, especially when the hard work is for God's glory We are reminded by Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:31 that whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, you should do it all for God's glory. Likewise in Proverbs 16:3, we learn that when we commit our work to the Lord, our plans will succeed.” And, in Colossians 3:23-24 Paul also tells us that whatever we do, work at it with all our heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Hard work is always rewarded, both from an earthly financial perspective as well as a heavenly, eternal life, perspective. Hard work is always rewarded, especially when you welcome it and don't complain about having to do it In Philippians 2:14-15 Paul told the Philippians, and it applies to us today, to do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that we may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky. Again, we have a reminder to embrace our gifts and work hard to use them for God's glory. Hard work is a mindset You want success and therefore you must work hard to achieve it. But even more importantly, posture yourself like Jesus when approaching hard work. Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and help you discern the action you should take. Doing what everyone else says to do is not the answer. God has given you specific gifts that require certain tasks to use them to help others. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and strength to do the hard work but to bring all glory to God, not to yourself. Pride has no place in a Jesus-like heart. Work hard from a place of humility and all glory will be brought to God. Once again Paul comes to our rescue. In Galatians 6:9 he reminds us not to become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Working hard while maintaining a balance of humility may make you feel weary, that's how Satan tempts us to be prideful. We want immediate rewards and gratification for our hard work. We're all guilty of it at one time or another. But we are works in progress, and we have God's grace to carry us through. Hard work it's never impossible When, not if hard work and success seem nearly impossible because it will happen, scripture provides comfort. Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:13 that we can endure all these things through the power of the one who gives us strength. Therefore, the question is, will you do hard work, and when. We've been called to it and will be rewarded for it - here on earth and in heaven. There's no time to waste. Get to work. If we work hard, we will be able to celebrate like Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:7 in which he says "I have fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.” This is God's goal for us. We are again reminded of it in Psalm 128:2: You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Friends, I'd love to hear from you. It's easy to celebrate and trust God when in a season of harvest. But do you trust that God is on duty even during the sewing season? If you are in doubt, I assure you that God is on duty even during the sowing season when you are questioning when the time of harvest will arrive. How do we know that God is on duty even during the sowing season? Let's begin with reading Proverbs 3:5-6, the focus of this message. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and He will make your paths straight. Are you in a seed sowing season or a harvest season? No matter what season you are in and experiencing, trusting God is critical for ultimate growth and success. Fact: When you are in the seed sowing season, what this year has been for me, you may feel unsuccessful. You may feel tired of doing all the things with what seems like minimal results. Stress and pressure, desperation, and frustration may feel like the norm. But during these times, it's important to recognize areas of growth and to trust that God is using this season to prepare you for the upcoming season of harvest. How to approach and live in the seed sewing season During the seed sowing season do not fall into a negative mindset and the temptation to doubt the Lord. He never leaves you nor forsakes you. He's planted seeds and He's nurturing them - if you are letting Him. Where many of us go wrong is we don't trust and we don't submit ourselves and our businesses to Him and His ways. The emphasis here is on never leaving you nor forsaking you - God is so serious about this that we can find the phrase in Deuteronomy 31:8 and Hebrews 13:5, in both the New and Old Testaments. Remember His ways are the best ways. Here we can refer to Isaiah 55:8-9: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Read the full show notes and access all links. If you want to effectively market your business, create a unique personal brand. The truth is, every effective marketing strategy begins with a unique personal brand. The reason is, you must control the perception others have of you. And that means you must differentiate yourself to build trust and stand out. Every effective marketing strategy begins with your who, what, when, where, and how To create an effective marketing strategy map out your who, what, when, where, and how. Let's break them down. Who is your soulmate client? In addition, who are you? Both are significant when creating an effective marketing strategy. If you don't know what differentiates you you can't effectively communicate with your soulmate clients to tell them about why they should hire you. Likewise, if you don't know your soulmate client, you won't be speaking to those people who need your expertise and will want to hire you. What are your soulmate clients' major pain points that you can help resolve? Can you define what keeps them up at night? What are they thinking about when doing the dishes or getting dressed that they cannot solve themselves? But you can and in a unique way. In addition, what platforms are they using to search for the information they need to get the results they want? What platforms are you creating content for? Is there an overlap? What changes do you need to make to reach your soulmate clients? When are you available to serve your clients? Elaborate on when they need you most and when you learned how to provide the solution they need. Likewise, when have you experienced their pain points yourself? Even more importantly, when and how did you overcome them? Where in your journey have you experienced what your soulmate clients are experiencing now - the beginning of your journey or more recently? Where do you serve your clients, in person, online, locally, or internationally? In addition, where will you market to your soulmate clients? Where are they researching to find the solution to their problem(s)? For example, if you are an entrepreneur who doesn't want to be on social media, where will you share information, on your blog, via email marketing? This is where SEO will become a key component of your effective marketing strategy. Why do you do what you do? Is there a reason you help whom you help? Simon Sinek explains using his golden circle that why is more important than how and what. That people resonate more with why you do what you do than what you do or how you do it. How do you help your soulmate clients get the results they crave? Do you have a proven method or system? Likewise, how do you do what you do? Elaborate on your background, skill sets, education, certifications, awards, life experiences, and mistakes you've learned from, etc. that help you help others. In addition, testimonials help elaborate on how you've helped others get their desired results. Read the full show notes and access all links. Faith influences life and business in dramatically powerful ways. It's never the end, but the beginning. The influence of faith on business can change your perspective on what's possible, even when the year hasn't gone as planned. The end or the beginning - The influence of faith on business as you close out the year. August can be a very stressful time. Summer is ending. School is starting. For many, you are sending your babies off to high school or college. August is a time of transition. And, if you are like many of the business owners and entrepreneurs I've spoken to recently, this has been a tough year to date. Sales are down. People aren't buying as much. Fear is a very real emotion. You may have questions about meeting your annual goals, being able to save this year, or having to say no when your kids ask for things they need for school. But God is a God of the 11th hour. He always provides. It may be last minute, but he will never let you down. . . if you trust Him. He will provide the resources you need. The words of Romans 15:13 provide a calming effect. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Instead of focusing on August as the end of summer and allowing negative thoughts and emotions to come over you, think of September as the beginning of the year. September is the new January. I realize September is the end of the third quarter. But it is also the beginning of the end of the year. It is the perfect time to put the pedal to the metal and focus on your mindset, evaluate, and implement a marketing strategy to create demand in your business, and take intentional action. September is not the time to sit back and let the year coast to an end. Knowing that God always has a plan and will not let you down and that through Him there is an abundance of hope, you can focus on strategies to create demand and move your business forward toward your goals. It's more than possible that in the next 4 months, you'll meet your annual financial goals. When you lean into faith and ask God for what you want with thanksgiving for all you already have, (Philippians 4:6) He will provide for you according to His good and perfect will for you. The influence of faith on business - stop doubting what's possible. What is He calling you to as you approach the 4th quarter? Have you been listening to the Holy Spirit? Or has the chaos of life pulled you away from believing the Holy Spirit is at work within you, leading you and guiding you? Quite the worry and fear by meditating on Romans 15:13 and listening for what the Holy Spirit is telling you. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Join the email list for updates and important details on The Success without Social Mastermind and upcoming webinars. with Dr. Robyn Graham, host of The Robyn Graham Show and author of the book, You, Me and Anxiety. Do you worry about what others think of you? Does the thought of public speaking make you physically ill? Are you someone who dreads dinner parties because you're so afraid of saying the wrong thing? Or, perhaps you worry about being humiliated because you've dressed inappropriately. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. We all have moments of doubt and at times, might question what others think of us. That's not uncommon. But if we're constantly worrying about what people think of us, that could make it harder to trust others or develop intimate friendships. The very thought of “being judged by others,” could make us unwilling to try new experiences because we're afraid of failing. It might even cause us to decline social invitations or avoid going out in public altogether. Living with the constant fear of how others might interpret your words or actions could actually cause you to miss out on life's best moments. While we may spend more time living our lives online, by doing so, we make ourselves vulnerable to negative commentary through social media. In its most extreme form, if someone frequently experiences intense and unrealistic fears of being watched and judged negatively by others, that individual might be suffering from social anxiety disorder. But it's important to recognize that social anxiety or social phobia is a debilitating mental health condition that can begin in childhood and, if not treated, may only get worse with time. Can social anxiety be overcome? How can we learn to stop caring so much about what others think? If you want to learn the answers to these questions and more, you'll want to listen to my interview with Dr. Robyn Graham, host of The Robyn Graham Show and author of the book, You, Me and Anxiety. Robyn is going to share with us tips, tools, and strategies for our children who suffer from anxiety and how we, as parents, might help support them. What You'll Hear in This Episode: Why do we care so much about what others think? How do we “should” ourselves so much that we actually hold ourselves back? What makes someone get anxiety? What is a panic attack? How can anxiety manifest in physical symptoms? Are there people that are more susceptible to worrying about what others think of them? What can we do about teaching parenting in schools to help children understand and manage their anxiety? What was Dr. Robyn's experience with anxiety and how did she finally learn more about the brain to apply it in ways that would help her? What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and how can it help someone? How can journaling help us change our negative thoughts to more positive ones? How medication along with therapy can prove helpful for those suffering from anxiety. How should we respond when someone says something that makes us feel hurtful? Possible signs of anxiety amongst children and teens, and the possible long-term effects of untreated anxiety. Today's Takeaway: It's hard not to notice when someone says something rude or unkind about us because it's hurtful. Sometimes even if the comment was made in jest, we may find ourselves questioning if what they said has any merit. But just because someone said something mean doesn't make it true. They could have been teasing or perhaps were deliberately trying to hurt us out of anger or spite. Even if their words weren't spoken in anger but rather meant as constructive criticism, they might have been wrong in how they saw the situation. At the end of the day, it's within our control to determine how much credit we give their words. There's an old saying that states, “What someone else thinks or says about me is none of my business.” As odd as that sounds, it's true. They're only stating their opinion, which they're entitled to have. But we don't have to agree with it. In all likelihood, we can't change it, so the only thing we can do is let it go. Remember that every day is a gift and we have the gift of choice. If we are making healthy, honest choices for ourselves by behaving in a kind, intentional, and respectful manner towards ourselves and others, then there is very little anyone can say that will hurt us. Just hold your head high and keep doing the next right thing for yourself. I'm Florine Mark and that's “Today's Takeaway.” Quotes: “There are a lot of physical manifestations. And so it's really important to identify what those are, and what you're experiencing, and then what's triggering those experiences or those symptoms.” — Dr. Robyn [7:01] “It wasn't until I was an adult that I actually got the help I needed to navigate my anxiety and manage my anxiety in a more positive way.” — Dr. Robyn [12:05] “You can catch those thoughts and start challenging them. This takes a lot of practice and intentionality.” — Dr. Robyn [16:01] “When you write down that negative thought and write the opposite positive thought next to it, your brain is going to see that positive thought, your brain will start to then be able to be better controlled. You will have more control over those negative thoughts to catch them sooner, and change them sooner so that you end up having more confidence and believing more in the positive situations in your life versus the negative.” — Dr. Robyn [17:10] “Keep in mind that anxiety and depression often go hand in hand.” — Dr. Robyn [20:47] “Sometimes we need that chemical change in our brain in order for our brain to accept that therapy.” — Dr. Robyn [21:02] “If someone says something to you that was hurtful, you can say, ‘You know what, I'm really sorry, you're having a bad day. If there's something I did to make you feel that way about me, could you tell me what it is because I would like to make it better'.” - Dr. Robyn [23:21] “When anything happens to us in life, we have a choice. We have a choice to be positive, or we have a choice to be negative.” — Dr. Robyn [23:24] “The worst possible thing you can do is say, I'm sorry, but…” — Dr. Robyn [25:33] “We need to be aware of anxiety, and we need to stop the stigma around mental illness.” — Dr. Robyn [27:49] Brought to You By: Gardner White Furniture Mentioned in This Episode: Dr. Robyn Graham You, Me, and Anxiety The Robyn Graham Show

Life often throws curveballs, that result in loss, grief, depression, shame, and a myriad of emotions. The key to overcoming is to take action. This is a story of an entrepreneur who took action over depression after two ectopic pregnancies resulting in loss, to start a clean fragrance business. Kelly Kussman had to overcome deep depression after losing two babies as a result of ectopic pregnancies. Her journey led her to start a clean fragrance business. She is now helping others create memories through scents. About Kelly Kussman Kelly Kussman is the owner, designer, and vision behind Cayla Gray, a luxury line of clean fragrances. She started her career in fragrance buying for a major department store where she fell in love with the distinctive nature of scents and their ability to make memories tangible. Seasons, nature, and scents have always been important and inspiring for Kelly. Scents have always made memories tangible for Kelly. Kelly's entrepreneurial journey began after she suffered from two ectopic pregnancies that ended in the loss of the babies. Through these experiences, Kelly realized that life was short and she began working on her business, Cayla Gray. Action and therapy are what worked for Kelly to recover from her loss. Kelly emphasized that it is important to honor your emotions in a way that works for you. Likewise, the more she shares her story, the more other women open up to her. Learn more about Tayna Dalton and her interview on The Robyn Graham Show. Taking action is key to overcoming Robyn emphasized that to overcome, whether it is shame, anxiety, or other emotions, we must take action. Without action, we stay stagnant and don't grow or change. It isn't always easy to take action, but you can put one foot in front of the other, baby steps, not massive action first, it is gradual. Kelly took action to shed the life she had before and to create something new. One action Kelly took, was journaling. This helped her see things in a new way and to appreciate the tiny moments of life. She began to purposefully see the beauty around her. As she journaled about all of these beautiful things brought Kelly back to scents. Fragrances are what bring her joy. Learning and discovering were key to beginning her business. She used Google and took classes as well as tapped into her past experience in retail for resources. Kelly worked two full-time jobs for about 18 months before she resigned from her corporate job in retail. Scents matter when you start a clean fragrance business When Kelly is creating, she begins with the scents she loves from her memories. She has created four scents, petals, water, cozy, and hearth. The Cayla Gray scents are related to the seasons. Petals - the Spring scent, light, powdery, floral. It smells like clean laundry and flowers at the same time. Water - the summer scent, cucumbers, spa water, and sitting by the pool with drinks. Cozy - the fall scent, sipping coffee outside on a chilly morning as winter starts to come. Hearth - the winter scent, a smokey bonfire scent that reminds her of her father. Once she mixes the scents she sends them off to a fragrance house to clean the mixtures and strip out any chemicals or preservatives. Kelly wants to have healthy products for her perfumes, candles, and other beauty products that are being created. Finding the right resources by aligning your values is important if you want to start a clean fragrance business Kelly has a perfume manufacturer or fragrance house that purifies the fragrances and then sends the fragrance oil back to her. From there, she sends the oil to a perfume fill house that fills the bottles for her. The same for the candles. She has a candle manufacturer who makes the candles using her fragrance oils. Kelly started doing this herself but quickly realized that she has to hire others to keep up with demand. She spent a lot of time networking to connect with others to see what they were doing and to gain connections to figure out the right partners, those who were aligned with her values. Learn more about KJ Blattenbauer and her interview. Integrity is very important for Kelly and she based her partnering decisions on which organizations she felt that she would be able to trust long-term. Use coupon code 20discovery when shopping at Cayla Gray. Kelly suggests starting with the discovery kit. Aligning your values, visions, and passions are a must if you want to start a clean fragrance business Kelly chose perfumes and candles as her products because they were items she is passionate about. She loves to have a scented candle and the flickering light when taking a bath and is obsessed with fragrances. Note: When you align your values, visions, and passions you will be able to build a solid foundation for your business. The importance of purity Using clean products is important for maintaining health. Kelly realized this when she was pregnant and she learned of all of the things she should avoid. She began to question why she was using products that weren't clean when she wasn't pregnant. The health and beauty industry is very minimally regulated in the United States. Currently, there are only 11 ingredients banned by the FDA compared to Europe, which bans over 1300 ingredients. There are harmful ingredients in a lot of products created in the United States, carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, and other harmful ingredients. It was important to Kelly to have clean products. But even the word clean is not regulated in the United States. Cayla Gray uses European standards when creating fragrances and products. Change is exciting, nerve-wracking, and quite often the best thing for us personally and as entrepreneurs. There is one thing that is always consistent in life. Change. Change is ineveitable. It happens whether we want it to or not. Change is good I've found over the years that most change is good. Even if it doesn't seem exciting or positive in the beginning, when first faced with it, it usually turns out okay, and to our benefit. God has a funny way of doing this for us. Creating necessary change and probably smiling while we are stewing with anxiety over it until we realize that He knew what He was doing all along. In episode 143 I announced that I was making a change in my business. That announcement was my retirement from photography. Click here to read the full blog post. Today I am announcing another big change. I am changing the name of The Second Phase Podcast to The Robyn Graham Show. Why? Not because I am giving up on the concept of the second phase, but because as I move into more and more coaching and publishing my book, "You, Me, and Anxiety" in March, I want to have more leeway in the content I am sharing. And, I want everything in my brand to be aligned. As you know, my social media handles are all the Robyn Graham and my website URL is the Robyn Graham. Changing the name of the show not only helps me with brand alignment but also helps people searching for the show. When I started the podcast, if I am honest, I started it without putting a lot of thought into it. Yes, I had planned for it, created the intro and outro and the show description, chose a name, but I didn't think about the name long-term. I thought I would have a show that featured people who moved from phase one of their careers to phase two and were making an impact as I had done. I wanted to tell stories that inspired others. If you have been following the show for any length of time, you have probably observed the transition from inspiring stories to inspiring stories with more tips and strategies for entrepreneurship. The end-of-the-year exercise is one you'll want to do to start 2022 off on a positive note.
