Tim Ryuko Langdell is a board-certified hospice chaplain and is both the head priest and guiding teacher at the StillCenter Zen Center in Pasadena, California.His dharma name, Ryuko, means “Dragon Tiger.”  He holds an Master of Divinity from Claremont School of Theology and a Ph.D. in Psychology from University College London.  He is an author of several books, including “Beginner's Mind: An Introduction to Zen Buddhism,” and “Christ Way, Buddha Way: Jesus as Wisdom Teacher and a Zen Perspective on His Teachings.” He has transmission to teach Zen multiple lineages including Clear Mind Zen (which is part of Japanese Soto lineage),  Korean Zen and Vietnamese Zen traditions.  Additionally, he was recently made an Assistant Zen teacher in the Open Mind Zen school which is in the White Plum tradition.https://www.timlangdell.com/Simplicity Zen Podcast:https://simplicityzen.com/

This week, we're looking at two seemingly disparate comics: Ryuko, by Eldo Yoshimizu, and I Am Not Starfire, by Mariko Tamaki and Yoshi Yoshitani. It's sort of a bookclub double feature, but we tried to find some points of comparison to keep the conversation as coherent as possible. (As coherent as we ever get, at least!) Ryuko, in particular, was a challenging manga for us to penetrate, but we tried. Tune in to find out why we decided to discuss two completely unrelated books that are polar opposites in tone and style, and to hear what we think of each of them! Kill La Kill is Studio Trigger's magnum opus, the spiritual successor of Gurren Lagann and the precursor to Little Witch Academia, two shows we've already touched on on the Couch. It is an anime unlike any other anime the gang ever seen before - it breaks an almost uncountable number of traditional boundaries, anime tropes, and uh...PG-limits...while barraging the audience with top-tier music, incredible fight scenes, and raw hype from the minute Ryuko arrives in Honnouji Academy in episode 1. Love it or hate it, Kill La Kill is a legendary entry in the anime pantheon. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

Dr. Kubota works in the Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia. Her research interests include race and racism in TESOL, multilingualism, and neoliberalism in ELT. Dr. Kubota was a featured speaker to this year's JALT conference, where she spoke about neoliberalism in language teaching and critical awareness of language myths. Oh, those wacky superheroes and their misunderstandings. Answering a call for help to deal with the escaped Venom symbiote, two of the multiverse's deadliest cosplayers -- Detective Sara Pezzini, aka Witchblade, and Ryuko Matoi of the anime Kill La Kill -- run into one another while on the hunt, and naturally assume that the obviously superpowered costume of the other is the symbiote wrapped around its villanous host. Fighting and argumentative hijinks ensue, along with near-nudity, unrealistic body types, and heaping spoonfuls of total nonsense. Which completely ridiculous character who can kill everything and never die will prevail?

Fabian is back to discuss what makes Toonami successful and memorable compared to other blocks in light of an anime block recently appearing on Chiller. Before that we have the usual KILL la KILL and SAO recaps. Ryuko and Satsuki finally hash out their issues and prepare for the final battle and Kirito and the gang seek out the holy sword Excalibur.
