Continuing our discussion on suite design, in this installment of The Offset Podcast Joey & Robbie get into more detail about gear you might want to consider having in a color/postproduction suite including: input devices, control surfaces, Streamdecks, foot pedals, aux monitors, 3D printing your own stuff, the amazing usefulness of VHB tape and a whole lot more! Looking for a deep dive on reference & client monitors? We'll cover that deep topic in a future episode.
Designing a suite thats both comfortable (for you and clients) as well as functional for color work is more complicated than you might think! Having built dozens of suites from scratch over the years, in part one of two episodes on the subject, Robbie & Joey share their lessons learned about room design including executing proper planning, if you should consider having a machine room, considerations for cable runs & connecting equipment in a suite from a machine room, common room layouts, and lots more.
This is Doctoring Up Design, the official Design Hardware podcast. I'm Josh Cooperman and today we are continuing our conversation about safety and security in residential design. This topic is not being discussed to scare you or to make anyone uncomfortable. To the contrary, there are a few ideas here that are extremely important and incredibly timely. Here's the idea…we live in a civilized society, but not necessarily a safe one. Weather patterns have changed and it would be crazy not to address those changes by preparing for the worst potential outcomes, right? Technological advances have made the modern American home stronger, more efficient, more comfortable and highly performative. And, it continues to get better. Our society has become more dangerous. It's just the way it is. So, if you are a homeowner listening to this, and safety is important to you, keep listening. If you are a designer, architect or builder, you have a remarkable opportunity to increase your firm's profile, create a new value proposition, a brand extension that will set you apart by offering something that is not widely offered by the design trade at large. And, you will generate more revenue in the process. If this is of interest to you. This is what you heard in the last episode of the show. You heard from Garett Winn, and Matt Terry from Safe room. This is part two of that conversation. In part one, we discussed the very basics of beginning to plan out your safe room design and the very basic ideas around that design itself. In February of 2024, Garrett, Matt and I met again, this time in person at Design Hardware to discuss these very ideas with far more depth and texture. We covered a lot of ground and if you are considering a safe room for your home or as I designer, you want to offer this as part of your services, you are going to want to hear this. It's great information that not only provides a much needed service, but it also creates new revenue streams for designers, architects and builders. Those in real estate should also give a listen. This could be the reason why buyers would select one property over another. We are going to get to that, right after this.Thank you Garett and Matt with Saferoom for your time and expertise. This was part two of a series that we was held live from the Design Hardware showroom in Los Angeles. Check out the Instagram feed, @DesignHardwareandflooring for more information as it's released. Thank you Michele Solomons and Avi Balsam with Design Hardware for your continued and unwavering support of the design and architecture community. And thank you for listening to the podcast. I love hearing from you, love learning about new products and guests you think should be featured on the podcast, so email me, with ideas and suggestions. Until the next episode, be well.

“That is some crazy market research.” In season 6, episode 7 of REPOD, we chat with the brilliant Marie Huber and Nico César, owners of Red Fox Escapes in Cambridge, MA. Red Fox Escapes is known for constructing elegant and complex puzzles with gorgeous, detailed sets. As David notes in the episode, “There are a few hallmarks of Red Fox games… your approach to puzzles… and the abundance of detail in your games.” As a former business analyst, Marie has a metrics-based approach to both how she runs the business and her design process. She even ran a workshop at RECON Boston called “Upping Your Game: Beyond the Basics of Game Design.” Nico comes from a software background. He talks about how his approach to tech in escape rooms is different from the norm, which tends to be hardware focused. Marie and Nico have spent a lot of time analyzing what makes for great gameplay and a memorable escape room experience. I especially enjoyed hearing all their stories about how to add a special touch to props in an escape room and their hacks for figuring out the headcounts at local escape rooms. This is a masterclass in how to approach escape room design with intentionality and thoughtfulness. Here at SCN we are where strength coaches (and other sports performance coaches) come to learn. This is cuz we help bridge the gap between what is taught in the classroom and what happens in the weight room/real world. We call out the bad, commend the good, and offer advice to those who need it. Here we go through a 10k foot view of good weight room design. We do not go into EXACT detail on sets and reps. But we will show coaches how to set up training for success. _______________________________ Be sure to hit the subscribe button to get more free content from us #education #learning #coaching #podcast ___ CONNECT:

In season 3, episode 7, we chat with Tommy Honton, creator of the award-winning escape room Stash House. He is a master craftsman of experience design with his bottomless bag of tools, combining storytelling and game design to create memorable, playable experiences. It's no coincidence that Tommy's been mentioned by so many guests on this podcast. It's clear his huge network exists because he genuinely cares about elevating the escape room community and helping like-minded creators succeed. It was fascinating to get a glimpse into Tommy's methodical creative design process. His approach to escape room design is deliberate and thoughtful, designing all aspects of the experience based on what he calls an “adrenaline map.” I especially appreciated the insight into his beta testing process. Tommy is so passionate about elevating the craft of immersive gaming and advocating for other creators. It's easy to see why many escape room designers consider him a mentor. Fairy lights for our little girl? A dinosaur theme for our baby boy? When designing our children's nurseries and, later, their big kid rooms, it's natural for parents to get caught up in the aesthetics. After all, designing is fun; researching ethical and eco-friendly products is decidedly not. But sustainable interior design is more accessible today than it has ever been before and with a bit of forethought it's entirely possible to curate beautiful spaces for our children that use... This is the fifth and final episode in our series about Room Design. We are discussing various design elements and how they impact stress, productivity, attention, and behavior. During this series, we've talked about how environmental factors can affect moods, emotions, and learning. Based on recent research, lighting supports student performance. Fluorescent bulbs are counterproductive to students' learning and have proven to be a natural stressor. Blue light from fluorescent bulbs can trigger headaches, and the intense light waves cause hyperactivity and anxiety. The constant hum of these lights is also a micro-stressor to the brain. (We talk more about that in the blog posts linked below.) Any of these drain mental energy, which reduces learning and productivity. So, how can we change lighting for humans to be more productive, happy, and focused? Natural lighting is the answer! Or as much natural light as possible. Our bodies are familiar with and respond to it. Natural light has so many health benefits but also affects mood, concentration, and the ability to control emotions. Use natural lighting when you need to keep everyone's attention, such as teaching a lesson. For independent work, use other types of lighting. Use LED lighting if natural light is not available. If windows are limited, supplement with warmer lights. LED is a great choice and is the best man-made solution to natural light. For LED lighting, is yellow or white better?Cool, white lights improve performance, attention, heightens alertness, and provides enhanced academic performance. Warm, yellow light causes people to be more relaxed and provides better performance on independent work activities. For more details on the effect of color, be sure to listen to our podcast discussing the use of color in the classroom. This is the fourth episode in our series about Room Design. We are discussing various design elements and how they impact stress, productivity, attention, and behavior. Think how you feel after being outside on a hot, humid day. You're sweating, hot, and feeling exhausted. Now, think how a child feels in a hot classroom with either no A/C or bad airflow. They will struggle to remember what they learned that day. More elements go into learning than just content. Other things impact memory and productivity, like room temperature in a classroom or a work setting.Remember Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? You must have psychological and physical needs met first, in order to have the brain space to perform “higher-order” thinking skills. Examples include critical thinking, creativity, logic, and reason. Based on the Harvard-based National Bureau of Economic Research, each school day with temperatures above 90 degrees F resulted in the loss of one-sixth of 1% of a year's learning. Temp over 100? Those days saw a loss of 0.5% of a year's learning. Crazy!Recent research by Cornell studied the effects of cold on the performance of Florida-based employees. When temperatures were low (below 68°F), employees made 44% more mistakes. Also crazy! So, what is the optimal working and learning temperature? 68 to 73 degrees F. This episode includes several tips to help control a room's temperature. Some have an expense involved (like air conditioning) while others work naturally with your body (staying hydrated). One tip from this episode: Put a tray of ice cubes in front of a tabletop fan to help cool the room a bit.Listen to the episode for more tips or check out the blog post linked below. This is the third episode in our series about Room Design. We are discussing various design elements and how they impact stress, productivity, attention, and behavior. Have you ever been out for a walk and smelled something that triggered a memory? Our sense of smell can trigger memories and strong emotions, both good and bad. The olfactory nerve taps into the memory system of the brain. That's why strong smells have a connection with memory recall, emotions, and behaviors. Let's travel back in time a bit to ancient Egypt. The Egyptians practiced aromatherapy for both their physical and psychological wellness. Since that time, essential oils have been used for therapeutic purposes to attain mind and body well-being.Some aromas wake you up, calm you down, or stimulate brain activity. Get creative! Have fun! Be aware of allergies!Lauren discusses various ways to incorporate scents, such as a diffuser, a spray bottle, scented candles, and plants. She also explains the effect of certain scents, including: Lavender and Jasmine – have a calming effect.Lemon / Citrus – enhances mental & physical performance and brightens the mood. Rosemary – helps improve thinking, memory, and processing.Cinnamon – stimulates brain activity and attention.Peppermint - improves alertness & memory. If you've been looking for ways to promote productivity or relaxation at home or in the classroom, introducing different scents might be what you need. This is the second episode in our series about Room Design. We are discussing various design elements and how they impact stress, productivity, attention, and behavior. Color has its own magnetic frequency. It has an energy that influences the neurological pathways in the brain. Color also influences our moods, emotions, and actions. It is very impactful, so why not choose colors to help kiddos learn? Color also helps us stay regulated, feel better, reduce stress, and improve performance. Lauren talks about using colors conducive to learning, retention, participation, and cooperation. She discusses a variety of ways to incorporate the following colors: Red – Energy booster. Think the Energizer Bunny! Orange – Mood lifter.Yellow – Attention grabber. Green – Concentration catcher.Blue – Productivity driver. Remember, color is a significant part of our lives and perceptions. Don't shy away from trying different color combinations to see what works best for you.Mentioned in this episode: BDNF -Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor. We won't go into the science of it, but what you do need to know is that it is activated by exercise and is a fertilizer for your brain. This is the first episode in our series about Room Design. We are discussing various design elements and how they impact stress, productivity, attention, and behavior. A study by Cornell University found that chronic noise caused stress in children. The study also found they did not learn as well as those in a quiet neighborhood. The body and the brain are in tune to things nearby, including sound. The brain expends energy processing those sounds, which takes away from focus and attention for learning. This is true for adults, as well. A noisy workspace also reduces productivity in office workers. Lauren discusses the biological connection to sounds that we didn't hear in our hunter-gatherer days. These new sounds trigger internal stress responses. Our Barking Dog (limbic system) quietly barks constantly, preventing the brain from fully focusing on the task at hand. The types of noise to consider include: Reverberation AirborneImpactWhile we can't stop all the excess noise, we can prevent some of it. Our brain has only so much mental capacity per day. If that capacity is spent on categorizing sounds, it's not able to keep and store information.Lauren gives several examples of noise reduction options for the classroom. Many of these same options can be used at home, too. One of the most stressful things in life is moving. Fortunately, Furnishr is here to take some of that stress off of your plate. This platform is designed specifically to help you with the process of picking and installing the furniture for your new home. Working with their team through their online system, they will help you design your dream space, whether it be a single room or an entire home. The process starts with a personality survey of sorts, which is intended to help determine the types of furniture that might interest you. This will help them determine where you fall on the design scale, from minimalistic to modern, as well as what pieces you are going to need for the space. Combining that information with a floorplan of the space they are working with, Furnishr will present you with a full setup, including alternate options for some of the bigger pieces. From there, you can pick what pieces you want to incorporate, and exactly how they will go into the space. You can even incorporate pieces that you already have and really love to make the space truly your own.Once the furniture is chosen, the process is no longer in your hands. On today’s MarketScale Pro AV podcast, we are joined by Electrosonic Pre-Sales and Design Engineer Doug Walker and Project Manager Bob Mann for a conversation on extended control room design. Control rooms are integral to companies that make mission-critical decisions daily. As Walker points out, the term “control room” does not mean the same thing to everyone, so the first thing that the technicians and engineers at Electrosonic do is begin by defining what that actually is and means to each individual client. For some, it could be a room with dials and valve switches and very physical devices, and for others, it could be a flight control room or be very software driven. “In the oil and gas industry, they’ve seen the control room attached to what it’s actually controlling, which can often be on a rig, or in a very hostile location, so with improved connectivity and better control rooms, it doesn’t have to be out in that hostile location anymore,” Walker says. Walker goes on to point out that now only essential personnel must be on the operated asset, on an oil rig for example, but people can operate the same resources remotely, which allows for better communication, and a lot of safety improvements. Technology has evolved, and as it has, people’s attitude and expectations have changed. That now means that we need to be able to access that information from anywhere. “In the oil and gas field, it’s more of what we call a controlled environment that the client’s looking to create,” Mann says. That allows teams to “monitor, implement, and replace faulty equipment” efficiently. “The most important tool that we’re providing is the ability to communicate immediately and seamlessly with any offshore asset,” Mann adds.

Jason talks interior design in 2018, from gender-neutral children's rooms to resort-style bathrooms.
I thought I was being sooooo smart! Really, I did!! Finally, I had a house with a dedicated laundry room! And, being that the laundry room was next to the garage entrance, I thought “what a great place to sneak in a mudroom too!” Great idea, if your laundry room is 12 feet by 12 feet. Not if your laundry room is 6 feet by 8 feet. And on top of that, I built the “mudroom” wall the week we moved into the house. That was a mistake. I figured out after living in our house for about 6 months that not only do we never park in the garage, because the weather is mild 95% of the time (so we never enter the house from the garage) the 6 foot by 8 foot laundry room becomes a battlefield every morning with two little girls and myself trying to get in there, put on shoes, grab bags, purses, etc. and get out the FRONT door (on the other side of the house) every morning. A space that I initially was very excited to have, quickly became a dreaded hole where everybody’s junk gets thrown at the end of the day. And did I forget to mention that it is a 1999 special, complete with golden oak cabinetry and ugly linoleum. Ugh! And laundry sucks to begin with; who wants to go into the cramped, cluttered space to do laundry, let alone stand in there and blissfully fold clothes (like I imagine women do when they have the laundry rooms ala Pinterest). This MUST change. So, I am working on a plan to make this 6 foot by 8 foot laundry room become just that A LAUNDRY ROOM, and only that. Plus, there is no way to expand this space (believe me, I investigated that). Don’t get me wrong, this is actually a perfect size for a laundry room, if that is its only purpose. So, the “mudroom” will soon be relocated to a more logical place in our house (which will be in an upcoming episode). Now the hard part begins, deciding what I want MY laundry room to look like and feel like. And what features do I want it to have, that it currently lacks. Since this will be a gut job, I can make it anything that I want, and that almost makes it harder for me to decide. Sometimes too many possibilities are more difficult for me than having to work with a certain item, or parameter. So, I got busy, and sketched several different laundry rooms, and I feel that they are all dreamy. I have narrowed down the options to 5 completely different laundry room styles, and I thought it would be fun to highlight the different styles and do an episode on what makes each style feel the way it does. This is essentially a series of recipes to capture the elements of 5 different design styles. I found one that makes my heart happy and cannot wait to have a more efficient space. Maybe one of these styles will speak to you and inspire you to make the dreaded task of washing socks and panties a little more bearable in a space that speaks to you.
