This episode contains: Around these parts, there's spooky and then there's spoopy. Steven says nope. Halloween can stick around year-round if you ask Ben. Ben found a house with severed limbs in the yard, but one was half a real rat. Steven's kids said no to Halloween decorations. They wanted Harvest Decorations. Stores are carrying skeletons for creatures without bones. Like octopuses. Whoops? And your welcome?: US embassies may have accidentally improved air quality. 2008 was great! Steven and Ben had great jobs and would NEVER get laid off. 2008 was also when Geometry Wars 2 came out. In 2008, US embassies installed air-quality monitors and tweeted amounts hourly. Can regulators be shunned to improve air-quality by the power of tweeting? Purely informational intervention from US to improve air-quality. Maybe the regulators should crack down on the quality of our podcast. https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/10/us-embassies-may-have-accidentally-improved-air-quality/ The D in DNA stands for Dubstep: Ancient viral DNA in human genome guards against infections. Viral DNA in our genomes are antivirals protecting cells against modern viruses. Steven correctly pronounces "endogenous!" Suppressyn has two S's and a Y, but the Y isn't where you think! Oh wait it is. Reverse experiments aren't just saying the word "experiments" backwards, Ben. Hauntingly futuristic: we say thank you to our DNA. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/10/221027154145.htm What is Dead may Never Die: Pebble, the OG smartwatch that may never die, updated to work with Pixel 7. Ben misses his Pebble. Recharging an Apple Watch every 2 days is TERRIBLE. The Apple Watch is a remarkable piece of tech, but if you want a WATCH... shrug. Pebble watches just got an update to support Android's 64-bit OS on Pixel 7. The Pebble Smartwatch: What is dead may never die. We have a story that only applies to those "rockin" the Pebble smartwatch. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/pebble-a-2013-smartwatch-updated-to-work-with-2022-pixel-7/ Science Fiction: Episodes 863 AND 864 of Star Trek on this week's podcast. Lower Decks: "The Stars At Night" are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas! Don't you need people to crew a starship to determine what good to do? How cool would it be if every California-class had a Texas-class escort? Evidently Jean-Luc Picard loves mummies. Shaxs finally got to eject his warp core! The M5 Multitronic Unit from TOS and the Texas-class AI are two peas in a pod. Badgey returned in a post-credit scene. If you wanted to start Star Trek: Prodigy on episode 11... you could but why? Ben recaps the Diviner's plan in Star Trek: Prodigy from months ago. The rest of Star Trek: Prodigy's first season has been compared to The Fugitive. Ben says Star Trek: Prodigy's 11th episode was rad. You should watch it. Tales of the Jedi: Ahsoka episodes are fun, Dooku episodes are incredible. Liam Neeson is back! Who deleted Camino from the archives? Now we know. What happened to Yaddle? Now we know. Will we ever see how EXACTLY Palpatine has returned? House of the Dragon is an amazing show about terrible people. Brothers named Arik and Erik? Man, screw this show. The first season of House of the Dragon was just setting up the upcoming game. Fallout's 25th anniversary is this year! Steven played it in High School! Steven reminisces about buying Fallout in EB Games in the mall back in the 90s.

Put on your best Opera House hat and join Anika and Liz as we dive into the first of a three-episode deep dive into Kai Winn Adami. This week, we're looking at her rise to power -- covering the episodes "In The Hands Of The Prophets", "The Circle", "The Siege" and "The Collaborator." And along the way, we discuss... If you only watch the Winn episodes, and maybe even only the Winn scenes, DS9 is a really amazing show about two women fighting about religion and politics "In The Hands Of The Prophets" - just because Winn is wrong doesn't mean the Federation is right Winn asks questions the writers should have thought about themselves: why is a human the Emissary? Why should Bajor join the Federation? (Why is this botanist with no teaching qualifications running a school?) Winn is the target for so much misogyny, and it says a lot about how fandom perceived and still perceives women in power. Minister Jaro and Shaxs: the only sexy Bajoran men in the entire history of the planet (also we do not agree on how to pronounce Frank Langella's surname, but Anika's version is probably right) Contrary to popular belief, Winn has integrity: she hates the Cardassians even more than she loves power, and is loathe to collaborate with anyone -- even the Federation Unfortunately we have become Winn/Jaro shippers "The Collaborator": Kira becomes the Vimes to Winn's Vetinari Winn as a maternal figure for Kira, which is GREAT except when you think about what happened to Kira's actual mother and then what happens to Winn… It's the episode where we realise we don't NOT ship Sisko/Winn...

There is, indeed, a spy humongous on the USS Cerritos. Capt. Freeman and Shaxs have gone down to the Pakled planet (which they called "Pakled Planet") to try and negotiate a peace. But then a "prisoner" from the planet "escapes" to the Cerritos and asks for "asylum" – and also schematics for the ships defensive capabilities.   Meanwhile, Mariner, Tendi, and Rutherford are on Anomaly Consolidation Duty. Basically, they are collecting dangerous science trash that senior staff has collected on away missions. The results are... messy.   Also meanwhile, Rutherford gets recruited into "The Red Shirts," and club of enterprising young officers who see to help each other get promoted through the ranks. If it seems like a cult, or just a bad idea, it is.   So, you know, the usual.

So there's this big scary mugato creature on on Frylong IV, precisely where it shouldn't be. Cerritos is dispatched to get to the bottom of it. So what if they're poisonous, carnivorous, and incredibly strong? Shaxs leads the away mission and turns out there are Ferengi (like old school electro-whip Ferengi!) behind it. Chaos promptly ensues.   Meanwhile, Boimler and Rutherford have heard a rumor that Mariner is a Black Ops agent from Section 31 and during the fighting they watch her stab Shaxs. Surely, they will be next, those silly-billies!   Finally, Tendi is tasked by Dr' T'ana with scanning all the personnel who have been avoiding their check-up. It's all going well until the very last scan-dodger proves to be rather catty about it.

Captain Freeman, Ransom, and Shaxs are called away on an urgent, covert, seed-planting mission, so there will be a visiting captain on board the Cerritos. At first, Mariner is upset by this, but then she discovers it is her old friend from the academy, Amina Ramsey. Ramsey selects Mariner to be her first officer and help her not be just a "babysitter" for the crew, but Mariner is having a hard time not screwing up everything she does for some reason...   Also, Brad Boimler gets kicked out of phase by a transporter experiment and is sent to "The Farm" on a Division 14 ship – where all the victims of recent Star Fleet accidents reside. He tries to stave off a mutiny.    Tendi creates a dog that is horrifying. This week on Episode 511 of Priority One: John de Lancie continues to drop some Picard Season 2 hints. In Gaming, we continue our review of the missions that brought the Klingon Civil War to an end in Star Trek Online. We also introduce a new contributor to the show: Dr. Michael J. Chan, with his analysis of “Chain of Command.” This week's Community Question is: Which deep cut character would you like to see in the next season of Lower Decks? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Just Call It Q-meo Already By Elio Lleo We told you that you should keep an eye out for Cameo videos recorded by John de Lancie! Once again, he might have spilled the beans and potentially spoiled some character appearances in season 2 of Star Trek: Picard. In one Cameo, he shares what was scheduled to happen on the next day of filming, saying: "...I've already been shooting, I've had some wonderful scenes with Patrick [Stewart]. It was nice, it was nice working with him again...and tomorrow, I'm...working with Brent. So, I'm really looking forward to that." So, when he says he's working with Brent…does that mean we might see Alton Soong? A past version of Data? Remember, Captains, you can join de Lancie's Cameo Fan Club for free and watch the videos he records for fans! No Small Parts In Lower Decks' Future By Cat Hough Mike McMahan, the creative force behind Star Trek: Lower Decks, has been offering up some interesting tidbits about Seasons 2 and 3 while promoting the recent Season 1 release of Lower Decks on Blu-ray. He told IGN that Season 2 picks up immediately with the fallout after the glorious battle of Riker vs. the Pakleds, Boimler's promotion to the Titan---and how Mariner, Rutherford and Tendi are dealing with all that. Speaking about his overall vision for the four main characters, McMahan says, “I know where I want them to end up. Let's watch together how they get there.” I see Shaxs and Kirk went to the same tailor. Image: ViacomCBS, via IGN. McMahan also promises there are more cameo roles coming up, but he also indicated some of these could be deeper cuts from Trek canon, saying “So there are some legacy guest roles in the second season and in the third season as well but I think it's people you're not going to expect when you get them.” Maybe we will finally get that sweet, sweet Roga Danar cameo? But we we know who's the most important one. Image: ViacomCBS, via IGN. That leads us to our first community question this week:    Which deep cut character would you like to see in the next season of Lower Decks? Let us know in the comment section for this episode at priorityonepodcast.com or by replying to our community question post on our social media channels like FaceBook, Twitter, and Instagram! McNamara Makes Her Exit By Rosco McQueen It could be one of those tapestry-type moments, where you pull at a thread and a whole different world would appear. In terms of enjoying Star Trek on the small screen and with new series in development, one of those threads that had a big impact was Julie McNamara. Image: ViacomCBS, via Deadline. For the last 15 years Ms McNamara has worked with CBS and ViacomCBS, her most recent role being head of programming at Paramount+. Deadline reported this week that she is stepping down from the role. In terms of the impact on Star Trek, Ms McNamara has been overseeing the original content strategy for the streaming service. Tom Ryan, ViacomCBS President & CEO, Streaming, announced the exit, saying “Julie's work and strong relationships with creators and talent led the way for the very first originals on CBS All Access, many of which are still top performers for Paramount+, including Star Trek: Discovery.” During her tenure at CBS All Access, which she joined as Executive Vice President of Original Content in 2016, she shepherded the new Star Trek universe (Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and the upcoming Strange New Worlds). We can only hope that her replacement works as hard to bring new seasons and series of Star Trek to the screen in the future. STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Long Remembered, Soon Repeated? By Thomas Reynolds "It was not well to drive men into final corners; at those moments they could all develop teeth and claws." Stephen Crane, The Red Badge of Courage The day of judgment dawns, as four would-be leaders face the slings and arrows of their outrageous doings. J'Ula leads the orbital assault of Qo'noS in the crosshairs of her own mycelial nightmare. J'mpok's dash for the throne turns his servitor races on each other–regicide is a booming industry in First City, and the player gets in on the ground floor. L'Rell races to the Great Hall before the mad Emperor can use “her” hydro bomb against “his” people. And Aakar probably wishes he got his hands on those personal transporters before the final bat'leth comes down. Ah well. “A Day Long Remembered” ends the Klingon Civil War arc with the Empire under new management and a new face. Or an old face? Cloning is weird. Anyway, J'mpok's career (and life) ends after J'Ula and L'Rell make a disarming argument in favor of new leadership. Having made good on her deal with Fek'lhr–two conniving schemers for the price of one!–J'Ula hands the Chancellor's bat'leth off to L'Rell, picking up the Torch for her instead. At the final party, they talk about working closer with the Alliance of 2411–not a promise we'd expect from Klingons of 2255. Their mood is optimistic, but we've seen how easily the Empire shatters under the strain of remaining Klingon. And it's hard to shake the feeling that we'll be back here, knives in hand, all too soon… Image: Cryptic Studios. A Command-ing Market Share By Shane Hoover Website PocketGamer.biz has run a short article in an ongoing series that examines market trends in mobile gaming. While the article is a sponsored piece by analytics platform App Annie, it nevertheless shares some interesting metrics that would impress even the Ferengi Commerce Authority. Image: App Annie, via PocketGamer. According to the article, the “City Battle Strategy” mobile gaming sector has raked in $2.5 billion in worldwide consumer spending in the first quarter of 2021. That represents a 60 percent growth over last year's first quarter. If you're talking about the U.S. market alone, the growth was 90 percent over 2020's first quarter. Of the top 10 intellectual properties in the City Battle Strategy category, Star Trek Fleet Command is sitting pretty in the top spot. So there's no denying that Fleet Command is raking in more gold-pressed latinum than Quark's shady schemes ever dreamed.
