In the 80s, the idea of special acoustic or unplugged albums and shows became a new medium that continues to today. Most think that Mtv started the movement in 1989 with their series called “unplugged”, however, most rock bands were playing acoustic renditions of their songs on radio when they would do in-town promotions long before then. This week we are celebrating bands that can re-imagine their songs with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air guitars! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.Songs this week include:The Struts – “Fallin' With Me” from Unplugged At EastWest - EP (2023)Kingdom Come – “Janine” from Live & Unplugged (1998)Helloween – “Future World” from Unarmed (2009) Wednesday 13 – “Scary Song” from Undead Unplugged (2014)Corey Taylor – “Lunatic Fringe” from CMFB… Sides (2022)Courage My Love – “For Now” from For Now (Acoustic Sessions) (2012)MSG – “Lights Out” from Unplugged Live (1993) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
KISS was so important to your hosts, The Wolf & Action Jackson, as part of the foundation of their love of rock n roll, live music and their friendship. That's why they invited Tom & Zeus from Shout It Out Loudcast to come on the premier episode of First Concert Memories, our monthly sidecast, and talk about the first time they saw KISS. For FCM 4, we welcome back Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni of Grown Up Rock Podcast and The Album Review Crew to talk about the first time he ever saw legendary KISS lead guitarist Ace Frehley play live. The Wolf and Action saw Ace as a solo act in the 1990s but Sonny saw him as a co-headliner with Y&T in 1987 and he shares with us how important it was to him to see Ace. Sonny go into KISS during the Asylum era and then learned that KISS used to have makeup and had different members of the band. From there he picked up Ace's first solo effort (aside from the 1978 KISS solo albums) Frehley's Comet and it furthered endeared him to Ace's style. Ace famously has had bouts with drugs and alcohol and Sonny relates a story of seeing Ace fall off the stage as well as why the band was so much better with Tod Howarth than in later years without him. If you've seen Ace recently, odds are you were disappointed as he seems a shell of his former self. That's why we wanted to share some memories from when Ace was still in strong form and delivering solid live shows. Sonny is opinionated and you'll hear all his takes on Ace, the shows he has seen and he even provided a bootleg recording of the show which is an FCM first! All Ace Frehley and KISS fans will love this one! Visit Sonny on Twitter (X) and listen to Growin Up Rock wherever you get your podcasts! 1987 in lined up perfectly for Whitesnake in North America. MTV was pushing bands like Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and Def Leppard and hard rock was all over the charts. Bring in a seasoned veteran like David Coverdale, A&R legend John Kalodner and the muscle of David Geffen and you get 10 million copies sold in North America! With fiery guitar magic from John Sykes, Coverdales sometimes rasping yet smooth vocals made this a juggernaut. But did you know Coverdale fired everyone and brought a whole new all star team for the tour? The videos were epic and featured perhaps the greatest video vixen of all time, Tawny Kitaen. The trilogy of Still of the Night, Here I Go Again (#1 US) and Is This Love (#2 US) videos are the stuff rock n roll dreams of the 80s were made of.To walk through this 80s classic we've enlisted Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni of Growin' Up Rock Podcast and Album Review Crew with Tom & Zeus of Shout It Out Loudcast. Sonny knows his stuff, bought the record the first day it came out, saw Whitesnake on that tour and more. We reminisce and crack wise with Sonny on a record that we all lived through in the 80s. Journey is a band that is often overlooked by rock fans when it comes to identifying music that defined a generation. Armed with great songs and an identifiable sound the band is one of the reasons '80s hard rock rose from the ashes after the era of disco. With radio hits with an edge Journey helped make rock mainstream. Sonny Pooni returns to The Hook Rocks to talk their music, songs, and their legacy. Stryper has been a Growin' Up Rock part of my life since they released the Yellow and Black Attack back in 1984. Singer and lead guitarist Michael Sweet is an amazing singer and we feel criminally underrated as a guitar player, so it is an honor to have him sit in with us on today's podcast. We talk to Michael about some of his earliest memories and influences, and we get into Stryper's latest release "God Damn Evil." Check out GUR co-host Sonny Pooni's album review right here. Michael is the driving force behind Stryper and he appears to be one of the hardest working men in rock n roll, with solo projects, Stryper albums, touring, Sweet and Lynch records, etc. When does this dude find the time to do stuff, like you know SLEEP!?! To me, it seems like the music the band has been releasing on the last two albums is as good, if not better, than anything they released in their so called "Hey Day." I say their "Hey Day" is today!! Vixen keyboardist and friend of the show Tyson Leslie returns for More Rare Hare. Now in it's sixth installment, the Rare Hare series of concerts have become a favorite of Nashville concert-goers. Incredible players from across the board perform deep cuts and favorites from the heady days of the 80's. Moreover, the playing is coming from members of some of your favorite bands. [caption id="attachment_36186" align="alignright" width="350"] More Rare Hare [/caption] In this long form talk, Tyson gives us the details on the upcoming concert that features Enuff Z'nuff kicking off the night with a set of tunes. Additionally, he tells us about his new gig with Vixen. Coupled with his experiences with The Big Rock Show, Tyson's tenure in Vixen has put him into some surreal scenarios. In fact, his multiple "pinch me" moments make for some entertaining discussion. Moreover, Tyson has some great stories of his piano bar job and some strange song requests. Finally, we finish off with a playout track by Vixen of Tyson's choice. We hope you enjoy More Rare Hare with Tyson Leslie and SHARE with a friend! Buy Music! They connect with their listeners and....they care. Itâs a mutual love of hard rock and metal. Subscribe. Today. Keep it going guys!! Facebook Review: Robert Sedler reviewed Decibel Geek Podcast — 5 star February 1 at 4:59pm · I started listening to podcasts in early 2017 and immediately went looking for a decent rock/metal show. I found a few that were forgettable, and a few that were downright awful. I stumbled upon Decibel Geek and noticed that they had an entire episode dedicated to the mighty Y&T. I said to myself, “OK, this is worth checking out”. I love being right, and boy was I ever right. These guys freakin’ GET IT. They cover a wide spectrum of everything that rocks, and have a good knowledge of some obscure bands that never get enough love. They live what they love, and you can tell that their love for the genre is as real as it gets. Keep it up guys. KISS Vinnie Vincent Invasion iTunes Review: Great listen by Rocr2 on Jan 10, 2018 Rating: ★★★★★ This pod cast gets a five star just for turning me onto Orchid! Can’t even begin to imagine the prep time these guys put into a show bringing a great wealth of knowledge ,humor and entertaining . It’s also refreshing to hear a music related podcast where the host does not talk about himself for half of it. Amazing variety of bands , songs , sounds , interesting bio , little known facts and even some useless information packed into each show. Their passion shows through on every episode!!!!! If your not a subscriber you are missing out. Facebook Review: Joe Bernstein reviewed Decibel Geek Podcast — 5 star January 12 at 2:16pm · I just discovered Decibel Geek podcasts. As a child of the '70's and '80's, this is right up my alley. I drive truck for a living, and prefer to listen to things to keep my brain engaged, and this certainly fits the bill. Your passion and knowledge for the music we all love makes the podcasts enjoyable. But the interaction amongst yourselves, with the sense of humor, respect (for each other and the guests) as well as love for the deep cuts and out-of-the-ordinary, make this podcast a necessity. We're back this week to tackle July through December for our 1996 Year in Review Pt2. July sees Layne Staley taking the stage for the last time. The Alice in Chains vocalist would overdose after a show in Kansas City, MO and never perform live again. Also in July, the Spice Girls hit big while scientists clone the first sheep. We're not saying there's a connection. We also aren't saying there isn't one. We discuss these stories and spin tunes from Jack Russell and Sublime. The month of August in this 1996 Year in Review Pt2 is a busy one. Oasis is hitting their peak on the strength of 1995's 'What's the Story Morning Glory' album. The band is selling out shows all over the world while getting massive press for shooting off their mouths. Conversely, Ramones were wrapping up a three decade career filled with great songs as well as disappointment. We take on these subjects as well as play cuts from Type O Negative and Michael Schenker Group. 1996 Year in Review Pt2 September of 1996 contains a bunch of great music. In this 1996 Year in Review Pt2 episode we spin fresh tracks from Thunder, Rush, Neurotic Outsiders, and Tool. Moreover, October sees the trend of solid rock music continue with releases by Marilyn Manson, Motorhead, Dio, and a greatest hits album by Van Halen. Speaking of Van Halen, the band shocked the world at the MTV Video Music Awards as the band reunited on stage with original singer David Lee Roth to present an award. The reunion was over before it began, however, and the whole thing fizzled quickly due to infighting. We discuss the Van Halen reunion that wasn't in this episode. The month of October 1996 included a big announcement by guitar hero Slash as he announced his departure from Guns N Roses. This announcement cemented most music fans opinion that the band was finished. Additionally, October included new music from Ugly Kid Joe, Corrosion of Conformity and a strange new release from LA Guns. We share some tracks from these bands and discuss some of the reasons behind Slash's big decision. November and December of 1996 included newsworthy items such as Bill Clinton defeating Bob Dole in the US election and the launch of the Mars Global Surveyor. New music from Gotthard, Poison, and Nerf Herder is unleashed on the world. We take a look at these stories this week. So many subjects, so many songs, and so much more including Top Movies of 1996 and classic commercials! We hope you enjoy 1996 Year in Review Pt2 and SHARE with a friend! I became a faithful listener about a year ago for several reasons. 1) The Music: I always get to listen to great music. The variety of tunes featured is top notch. Into some of the bands more than others, but the exposure to music I haven't heard before is always appreciated. 2) The Guests: Chris and Aaron have what it takes to make an interview worth listening to. The stars and guest that are on are always entertaining. The insight and humor is always appreciated. I learn something I didn't know almost every time. 3) The Variety: I love themed shows, Toddzilla, KISSmas in July, The featured shows (RUSH, AC/DC) and especially the Radio Sucks episodes. A huge shout out to the Y&T episode you had. They have always been a top 3 band for me and it was great for them to get the exposure they deserve. Thats about it. I will continue to make this podcast a weekly must listen. Great Job guys!! Some like a soft ballad, but I prefer the bombastic, Everyone that listens to the show knows Sonny likes his rock n roll, but he also love’s him some ballads. Steve on the other hand skips to the next song the second he hears a slow acoustic guitar ring out slowly through the speakers. Stevie boy likes to rock, and he does not want to slow dance to the latest Metallica song. This week we try to bridge the gap between the boys and give Steve and Sonny the best of both worlds. We talk and play songs that start out gently and woo you to a calm state before taking out that rolled newspaper and slapping you directly across your nose causing your eyes well up.
