I am pleased to report that the annexation petition for our Karman Line project was heard in front of Colorado Springs city council last night. Our project consists of 1783 acres that at one time formed part of the Norris Ranch. Mr. Norris was the Marlboro Man in the cigarette commercials. We bought the last remaining remnant of the Norris Ranch from Steve Norris, the son of the Marlboro man. The annexation petition passed the first reading in front of city Council late last night with a vote of 7 to 2. -------------- **Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)
In 2022 we acquired the last remaining piece of the Norris Ranch from Steve Norris, the son of Mr. Norris. The project was called Norris Ranch when we acquired it. But it turns out that there were numerous properties called Norris Ranch and it was becoming difficult to distinguish them. The city asked us to come up with a new name. I'll have more to say about that later in today's show. Yesterday our project came before the city's planning commission. I'll give you the punch line up front. The project was approved at planning commission and recommended for first reading next month in front of city council. The application is for a concept plan which includes a zoning overlay across the property which designates the future zoning. These areas will still need to be further developed with individual site plans. We're excited to get this project started! ---------------- **Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

State Senator Jeremy Moss, a Southfield Democrat, shares his insights as a Jewish legislator during a moment of "permeating antisemitism" in Michigan. He says his experiences with antisemitism have been questioned and "word policed." As people react to the Israel-Hamas War from home, Moss believes his own U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib is "contributing to the divisiveness," and he says he can't vote for her (1:09). Also, MIRS meets up with Mary Draves, the former Dow Chemical Company executive who's running in Michigan's competitive 8th Congressional district (37:03). Additionally, Steve Norris – a harm reduction and recovery support director in Oakland County – is concerned about different opioid remediation efforts becoming less collaborative (52:07).

Christian speaks at length with Steve Norris, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the UK Department for Transport between 1992 and 1996, who was the key Rail Minister serving John Major's Conservative Government in delivering the privatisation of Great Britain's railways and the creation of new industry structures. While reflecting on the passenger growth which followed the 1993 Railways Act as well as candidly examining the shortcomings which emerged, Steve has much to say about flaws in the rail reform programme being promoted by today's Conservative Government, plus some pointed questions for Labour's alternative [2:30]. With the Labour Party having just published proposals for bus reform across England, Christian looks at what this could mean for cities and regions aspiring to enjoy bus networks more like those taken for granted in London [31:48].
Excited Kiwi mountain runners came together to run through the Kepler Track in the Fiordland National Park. The mountain race, which takes place every year on the first Saturday of December, sees entrants run the entire 60km of the track- a journey that takes trampers 3 to 4 days to complete. Race director Steve Norris says it's 'incredible' to watch people complete this as a personal challenge. "There's probably some people this morning in a bit of pain, but in a week's time they won't remember it- they'll only remember the amazing views." Led by Commissioner Mike Moran, the all-Republican Sarasota County Commission yesterday voted to cut subsidies for childcare. During the discussion, Moran called uninsured Hurricane Ian victims in North Port "undeserving" of federal aid, and justified his overhaul of county funding for social service non-profits as an effort to end "Sarasota Socialism". Ramon Lopez has the details. Then: After a pledge of allegiance led by a World War 2 veteran, and diversion tactics by the only U.S. marine on the dais to delay the project, Manatee County commissioners are inching closer to a decisive battle over an affordable-housing plan for veterans in west Bradenton. Dania Hefley covers the latest affordable housing maneuvers in Manatee County. Next: Tomorrow, a Tampa judge will rule on a motion to dismiss by the Uhuru Three, in a case prosecutors brought against them after an FBI investigation. Josh Holton with partners station WMNF reports. Then: On Friday, U.S. agencies announced that they will nominate Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Partner station WMNF explains what this historic designation would mean for the huge Southeast Georgia swamp. Next: Researchers from Mote Marine Laboratory are watching for speeders on Sarasota Bay. They won't be handing out tickets, but as Jim de La of the Community News Collaborative explains, they're working to save sea turtles. Then: The University of South Florida's research in dementia is getting a boost. Partner station WMNF has more on that. Then: It's taken years for developers and one Sarasota County town to figure out the best way for visitors to park their cars, once the St. Regis resort is finished. But the Community News Collaborative's Eric Garwood tells us a solution has likely been found. Finally: On his last Surreal News show on WSLR, host Steve Norris interviewed investigative journalist and documentary film maker Greg Palast about his latest film project "Long Knife". The film delves into the money making origins of Koch Brothers, the fossil-energy concern that is funding much of the conservative makeover of the United States.

On today's show we're talking about a major development project that we have underway. We closed yesterday on a parcel of land consisting of 1783 acres on the edge of Colorado Springs. This property was part of a much larger property called the Norris Ranch that originally was close to 20,000 acres. There is a story behind Mr. Norris and the Norris Ranch. We purchased the property from Mr. Steve Norris, son of Bob Norris who died in 2019 at the age of 90. Bob Norris was a cattle rancher. Through an unlikely turn of events, Mr. Norris had an elephant on his ranch. Bob Norris was famous as the Marlboro Man, the public face of Marlboro cigarettes. This project would not have been possible without forging a partnership with some very prominent families in the local Colorado Springs market. We have a strong vision for this project as an extension and growth of the Colorado Springs community. ---------------- Host: Victor Menasce email: podcast@victorjm.com

An interesting conversation with Steve, Adrian and myself. I hope you enjoy it as much I did.
Steve Norris grew up in a small town in Southern Illinois, where his deep curiosity for the world set the stage for a life of passion and adventure. His love for music started at the age of 4 when in spite of being told by his older siblings' piano teacher that he was too young to start learning to play, he was the only child that actually wanted to sit and practice. Hence, the teacher ultimately relented and started teaching Norris, who went on to play the likes of Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert throughout his childhood. In his teen years, he discovered Rock and Roll and began writing his own music. This led to an early career in the music business where he toured in America and overseas, signing a record deal with an independent label in the 90s.Getting married and starting a family led Norris to enter the business world where he discovered he had a knack for sales, leadership and innovation. He's Co-Founded and launched two companies from the ground up (a Tech Consulting Firm, and a Music Distribution Company) building them both to global brands. He's a former National Board Member and past President and Chairman of TechServe Alliance, a consortium of IT Staffing and Consulting firms comprising over $4 Billion in combined revenue.Steve's current passion is in giving back and working on projects that are making a difference in the world. Along with his grown daughter Erin, he launched “Better Place Project with Steve Norris,” to shine a light on individuals from every corner of the globe who are doing incredible things to help make the world a better place. A prolific striker in league football with teams like Scarborough and Halifax, Steve Norris joined Chesterfield FC in 1992 after winning a golden boot during his time in West Yorkshire. Steve joined us to talk about what it takes to be a goalscorer, his fractious relationship with John Duncan and the epic 4-4 draw at Liverpool in 1992.
In this week's episode, with the SCDCA T20 competitions having begun in earnest, we have a look back at what shorter forms of the game existed in the South Coast District in years past, before the BBL and T20 cricket took over the cricket world. We also check out the scores from Kiama's start to the T20 season, and wonder aloud just how far they can go this season in this form of the game. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/kiamacricketclub/message
As one of the original members of the Lake Macquarie Trophy Flathead tagging team and a lifelong rec fisher at the lake, Steve has plenty of runs on the board when it comes to catching quality flathead from the system. He's still chasing the magic metery, but he's personally caught and tagged 199 of the 500 or so 70cm plus flathead recorded so far in the trophy flathead program. __________________________ Keen to hear more episodes like this one? EP 160 of the Leave Your Mark podcast is another in the series of ALTIS Poolside chat's that I was honored to host back in September of this year. This is a fantastic discussion between Dr. James Morton, Dr. Stephen Norris, D.O. Sam Gibbs, Will Brown, and myself on the subject of Science versus Practice. There are some amazing and thought-provoking threads and it's a great finishing salvo for this year of 2020 where this subject has been so at the forefront of our daily lives. It will be out, as usual, this Wednesday on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and many other streaming services.
Kia Ora Whanau. The 2020 Kepler Challenge may not have been the race we wanted - what with the alternative course being in play for a second year on the trot - but it was certainly the race we needed. 2020 has been a challenge in itself. Challenge, heck, that’s a bit anodyne.. 2020 has been a hot mess - full of dread, anxiety, anger, the global spectre of narcissism being the new black and the endless grind of living within a world beset with a pandemic. For the organising committee and all that made it down were sure on a number of occasions this year that the event would not go ahead. But it did, and it was incredible, and we are forever thankful. Te Anau - a town that even before the pandemic stopped the town’s lifeblood of tourism, had been hit by flooding, certainly needed the support, and by gosh it was amazing to hang out for the weekend with 700 plus of your closest friends at what was essentially a mountain running summer camp, with pizza. We wanted to document the weekend in the best way we could, so here it is - the 2020 Kepler Challenge Special, including a breakdown of the weekend, results, some recording in the field, and our 2020 Kepler live show which featured Steve Norris, Scotty Hawker, and Fiona Love. Enjoy.
With a long and illustrious career in business and transport, Steve Norris is best-known as Minister for Transport in London (1992-7) “the toughest job I ever did.” No-nonsense and straight-talking, he ran for Mayor of London in 2000 and 2004, but lost on both occasions to Ken Livingstone who, he tells Leon Daniels, was “the best Mayor by a country mile.” There are terrific anecdotes about London Buses, leading into the real reasons we don't have conductors anymore and the incentives required to offer a good service. Turning to the recent Transport for London (TfL) financial rescue package from the government, he skilfully dissects the politics and personalities involved. We also find out what he really thinks of Boris Johnson (who he says is a ‘sofa') and what Steve Norris would do if he was Prime Minister…

What is the state of the union in the United Kingdom today? With Scotland and Wales going their own way in dealing with the pandemic and now, mayors from major metropolitan areas set to follow their own path too, the union is looking decidedly shaky. On top of this, Boris Johnson is dealing with the looming Brexit deadline. It is a difficult time for any prime minister but particularly one recovering from coronavirus; this political period is not an era one would choose to govern. So, will Boris Johnson survive? Whispers in the corridors suggest that there is a growing number of Conservatives who would like to see him replaced. The Tories have a right to rule but Boris Johnson does not necessarily have a mandate to lead, so we garnered the thoughts of former Conservative MP, Steve Norris, who gave us his take on what is happening within his party. There has been tremendous upheaval in Thailand this week. Huge demonstrations and clashes with police and security forces; the country is now under a severe state of emergency with gatherings of five people or more banned but still the student protests continue. What are they asking for? Even though Thailand has been successful in controlling the coronavirus with only 59 recorded deaths, the country is hermetically sealed. The consequences of this success, however, is the near-total destruction of the economy and a 20 percent loss of GDP overnight. With no foreign travel and now political upheaval, the people are calling for the resignation of the prime minister. But set to have an even greater impact is the “illegal” criticism of the monarchy. So, we invited the epitome of a Renaissance man, Pepe Escobar, geopolitical analyst at the Asia Times, to talk about Thailand, China, Afghanistan and much, much more.
This week is the first anniversary of Boris Johnson’s premiership. Nobody imagined that he would get out of the EU just quite so quickly nor did they imagine he would be returned with an 88 majority in the last election. A year on from these achievements he is in a much less comfortable position but with the coronavirus bomb going off in the middle of his premiership his subsequent achievements and failures have been somewhat obscured. So, what about his performance so far: hammering out a deal with the EU employing a “no deal” strategy, if successful, will certainly confound his critics both inside and outside of the Conservative Party but Boris Johnson’s stand in the party’s ideology is still hard to place – is it to the left or to the right and has it changed in the past year? We tempted Steve Norris out of semi political retirement: former conservative candidate for mayor of London, former transport minister and now Tory grandee, who better to ask about Boris Johnson’s leadership one year on?! One of the emerging controversies in the coronavirus story is what has happened to the huge amounts of money the government has thrown at combatting the pandemic: testing, tracing, contacting, all of these things have had a significant amount of resources put into them. However, some are now saying there is a lack of transparency in how the money has been spent and a lack of accountability of the value for money we have received. One such group of campaigners is We Own It who are calling for public services to be run for people not for profit. Their campaigns officer is Pascale Robinson; she is calling for public ownership for public services – not an unexceptional demand but one which has been eroded over the last 30 years. So we asked her about the current situation especially after MPs voted against Clause 17 which was intended to protect health and care services in any international trade agreements and negotiations.
He offers his own blood to arrest COVID-19.

This week we chat with Steve Norris about which of life's truths can be gleaned from the Romeo and Juliet inspired and Stephen Sondheim’s first lyrical outing - West Side Story!Walter Kerr wrote in the New York Herald Tribune on September 27, 1957: The radioactive fallout from West Side Story must still be descending on Broadway this morning. Director, choreographer, and idea-man Jerome Robbins has put together, and then blasted apart, the most savage, restless, electrifying dance patterns we've been exposed to in a dozen seasons .... the show rides with a catastrophic roar over the spider-web fire-escapes, the shadowed trestles, and the plain dirt battlegrounds of a big city feud ... there is fresh excitement in the next debacle, and the next. When a gang leader advises his cohorts to play it "Cool", the intolerable tension between an effort at control and the instinctive drives of these potential killers is stingingly graphic. When the knives come out, and bodies begin to fly wildly through space under buttermilk clouds, the sheer visual excitement is breathtaking .... Mr. Bernstein has permitted himself a few moments of graceful, lingering melody: in a yearning "Maria", in the hushed falling line of "Tonight", in the wistful declaration of "I Have a Love". But for the most part he has served the needs of the onstage threshing machine ... When hero Larry Kert is stomping out the visionary insistence of "Something's Coming" both music and tumultuous story are given their due. Otherwise it's the danced narrative that takes urgent precedence ...- FURTHER READING -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Side_Storyhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055614/https://itunes.apple.com/au/movie/west-side-story/id253021356https://open.spotify.com/album/3knRTstKrILa8wx8IGGqn6https://westsidestory.com.au/Like us on Facebook! Kia Ora Whanau. What a weekend that was! This show was recorded live at the Fiordland Lobster Company meeting room (true story) during registration at the 32nd annual Fresh Choice Kepler Challenge. Parts of it were also recorded in room 212 of the Distinction Hotel (true story) and a small part of this was recorded in Eugene’s bedroom (true story) because as per, we were giddy and fatigued during the intro and forgot stuff. We speak to Steve Norris, the Kepler Challenge race director about the conditions that necessitated the change to the alternative course for the 3rd time in 32 years. We speak to Nancy Jiang, back to defend her women’s victory last year about her year of racing in Europe and the challenges she has faced from injury and crashing her mountain bike (the bike was fine, don’t worry). Three time winner Vajin Armstrong talks to us about his experiences in Africa, including training in Iten and running Comrades ultramarathon, and we bring it on home with Grant Guise, who shares with us his lifelong fascination with Kepler, and his favourite anecdotes from the race’s history. We also share our race experiences and lots more on this bumper Kepler special. Enjoy!

Eugene and Matt travelled to beautiful Te Anau, also known as the Chamonix of Fiordland, to take part in the Kepler proceedings. It would be Eugene’s first time competing and Matt’s third. Whilst there we were planning to engage in a live podcast, our second in two weeks and then run the next day. This podcast proves that whilst, yes, we did indeed start a live podcast at race registration, and whilst, yes, we did indeed both line up on the start line, that sometimes the universe can indeed dictate proceedings. And when that happens you gotta scramble. But here we are, with it smoking in our trembling hands, and despite the trevails and several re-thinks, this week’s episode is a straight up banger. We’ve interviewed Steve Norris, who for 20 years has been involved with the Kepler Challenge and has been race director for the last 12. We speak to Grant Guise of Altra (our first returning guest) about his 6th Kepler, his success in the 2019 Hardrock ballot and his thoughts on the Kepler committee engaging a ballot system for next year’s race. We also speak to Martin Walker of Christchurch’s Further Faster about his first Kepler attempt, and what will from now on go down in Kepler lore as the incident known as “Rocky’s Rocky Point Rebellion”. Finally, it’s down to an exhausted Eugene and Matt recounting their very eventful time on course (and off) during the 2018 race. Safe to say, Matt and Eugene both love Kepler a whole lot, and cannot wait to try their hands in next year’s ballot! Enjoy!
Dr. Steven Norris is a Professor at the University of Texas Health Houston, where he studies Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the U.S. and it can lead to lifelong debilitating conditions, including arthritis and neurological symptoms. Dr. Norris has been studying B. burgdorferi for many years in his laboratory, and investigated various aspects of how this organism causes disease in infected hosts, including its motility, surface proteins, and plasmids. Dr. Norris discusses everything you ever wanted to know about Lyme disease, including how people get the disease, the prospect for vaccines and eradication, the difficulty of working with this and other spirochetes in the lab, and his hobby of paleontology. The MicroCase for listeners to solve is about Wolfgang Schweinsteiger, the German accordion player who fulfills his lifelong dream to go to the Grand Canyon, only to come down with a deadly disease. Escalating the Resistance to Fossil Fuels by MFlowers May has been a month of escalated resistance to fossil fuel industries and a call for a rapid transition to clean renewable sources of energy. The month began with Break Free: two weeks of direct action targeting coal, oil and gas around the world. That was followed by a week of action called the Rubber Stamp Rebellion protesting the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for its approval of new fossil fuel infrastructure without adequate consideration of the impacts new projects will have on the health and safety of communities, harm to the environment or worsening of the climate crisis. We speak with three advocates who are working to stop dangerous fossil fuel projects.
