"Perhaps the deepest reason why we are afraid of death is because we do not know who we are." ~ Sogyal Rinpoche Guest Introduction: Welcome to another episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. My name is Cindy MacMillan. Do you ever feel like you are waiting on a permission slip to live the life you want? If you answered yes, then you are in the right spot. Each week I interview coaches and spiritual explorers, from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in between. Self-love well-being and mindset are at the heart of our conversations. Because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. In this episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, we are chatting about what makes a good death doula. And my guest is Sue Phillips. Sue is a Critical Illness / End of Life Doula in Ontario Canada interested in raising public awareness on the scope and value of the support she provides. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Welcome to the show, Sue. Thank you for being here. 3:01 I'm in that season or stage, if you will, you know, I think back to maiden, mother and crone and I'm at that crone stage, and with that crone stage comes wisdom and acceptance, and a willingness to explore more difficult, you know, feelings and topics, you name it, just a willingness to explore the hard stuff, feel the feelings, not be afraid. 6:18 You're right, Cindy, about different perspectives because we all are unique, just as our life experiences and our death experiences are all unique. So, the word doula is a Greek word for servant or helper. So just like a birth doula helps a woman during the labor process a death doula does the same for someone experiencing the dying process. And that process can span months and years. 9:28 That's a big part of why I'm doing what I do. I'm very interested in raising public awareness. I will say that in my experience, and I have been practicing for only the last 14 months, so kind of hung my shingle, if you will, not very long ago, at the beginning of the pandemic, actually, and what my experience has been other than one client who was 94. My clients have been late 50s, early 60s. So, you know, it's the baby boomers who are looking for this kind of support. It's gaining momentum. 14:47 When I say support group or circle of care, I'm referring to everyone that's involved with care, and it doesn't necessarily mean at end of life. So, when we're talking about critical illness again, then it can last a long time. So that support can be surrounding that person for a long time. And you have your medical teams and your maybe social service teams, your faith-based teams and their family and loved ones. So that support does extend to loved ones, you know, who may need to talk, may need to understand, and give them opportunities for reflection, and to share how they're feeling with what's happening. 19:04 I just want to say this quote, and it's by a Japanese writer, Haruki Murakami, “Death is not the opposite of life but an innate part of it. By living our lives, we nurture death.” 25:16 I wouldn't say that there was forgiveness there. But there was an acceptance that provided what this client needed. 28:30 There's a really good strategy for people to use and it's, I wish, I worry, I wonder. I wish we didn't have this need to have this conversation, because I know, it might make you uncomfortable. But I wonder if we can take some time to talk about what our wishes might be because I worry about not knowing what you will need. And I wonder if we could share some time to explore that. And I think it's important for people to try and have those conversations with each other. Thanks for listening! If you enjoyed this episode and you'd like to help support the podcast, please share it with others, post about it on social media, or head over to iTunes to subscribe, rate, and leave a review. I would love to hear your favorite part of the conversation. Over the next few weeks, I will be announcing a 12-week one-on-one coaching program. It's for women who are ready to make a change, finally let go of the past and stop waiting for permission to step into their big, beautiful lives. Whatever that big, beautiful life looks like for them. It's called Journey of the Heart: An Inner Revolution. Also, June 1st is the beginning of a self-care series called “Self-care is more than a buzzword. It's personal.” We will be talking about Self-care Practices for our Mind, Comprehensive Self-Care to Uplift Your Body, Mind and Soul, and Why it's Important to Own and Trust our Sexual Energy plus so much more with incredible guests. Until next time live inspired!

Growing up in South Africa, Sue Phillips loved theatre and, ultimately, love of theatre took her to New York City. While still hoping for work in the theatre, someone suggested that she go into the cosmetics/cosmetics training field because of her ability to stand in front of audiences and speak. Taking that path, Sue would become the national training director for Elizabeth Arden where she learned about fragrance. Six years later, Lancôme hired Sue as marketing director for fragrance and men's skincare. From there, she was hired by Tiffany & Co. as the vice president of marketing where she developed and launched the first Tiffany perfume! With Sue's fragrance experience, she launched her own fragrance company called, “Scenterprises” and authored “The Power of Perfume.” I recently found out about Sue and her work, even helping individuals who lost their sense of smell, on Dr. Ward Bond's program. I asked Sue if she would join me to share her effort as well as her work with those trying to regain their sense of smell and her passion for those living with Alzheimer's and Sue is joining me tonight!
On tomorrow's Make A Difference Minute, Sue Phillips, founder of Scenterprises and author of The Power of Perfume shares her passion for fragrance and the impact of her mother, Grace, on her life, including her mom's battle with Alzheimer's which inspired her to support Alzheimer's efforts. What you'll learn in this episode: What have you and your teams learned about fostering creativity and innovation during pandemic remote working and how will you be running that with hybrid working? What is your advice for handling hybrid meetings, with some people in the room and some not? How can we be making the most of our time in the office together? (i.e. not just schlepping the laptop into the office to do what we could have done at home) How do we make sure that hybrid working is fair and doesn't discriminate against any particular group, e.g. working mothers of school-aged children? Masks Have Kept Us From Smelling Other Peoples Perfume and Cologne But Not Our Own! Perfume has been one of my small pandemic pleasures because it just makes me feel good! So does the fresh smell of my boyfriends cologne after he showers. (When you're confined in a house together it's good to smell good.) Like many of you I have my favorite go-to scents that others often comment on when I walk in a room. Fragrance guru Sue Phillips says when that happens, it means that particular scent is working its magic with your personal chemistry. For more than 40 years, Sue Phillips, one of the world's most renowned fragrance experts, has created fragrances for brands, and celebrities. Her many credits include senior positions at many of the fragrance industry's top companies; Elizabeth Arden , Lancome Paris, Burberry, Chloe, Lagerfeld, and Lancaster working on the Davidoff brands and Chopard. At Trish McEvoy, Sue developed her first 3 fragrances. She even created the first ever scent for Tiffany & Co. called TIFFANY which became one of the company's top sellers and was followed by Tiffany for Men. Sue Phillips will tell you smell is distinctly linked to the brain and produces 'emotions'. And boy do certain smells bring back memories! Scent, scientists have long known, is the most powerful of the five senses -- and the only one that connects memory, emotion and taste. “Our sense of smell is our most powerful sense after sight,” Sue explains, “but it is the most forgotten and ignored. Sue's long awaited and much anticipated new book is just out. The Power of Perfume: How to Choose It, Wear it and Enjoy It! can be found in bookstores and on Amazon. Besides amazing stories (like how the incredible success of Chanel No 5 was actually caused by a mistake), Sue gives timely insight into how certain foods may help bring back smell for those who've lost their sense of smell as a Covid virus side effect. Great stories too about all the celebrity fragrances she's created and how you can create your own signature fragrance at her “The Scentarium” on the Upper East Side in NYC. suephillips.com Fragrance Lovers Will Love This Interview Conversation. PS: My Personal Perfume Picks ? Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue is a fave. I'm also drawn to Chance By Chanel (goes well with my Risk It Or Regret It! attitude). My warm weather drugstore favorite is Jovan Musk with the orange top. And my boyfriend bought me a new perfume recently that's now a huge new favorite - Voce Viva! by Valentino. (Word of mouth? lol )
My guest today is fellow Oregonian Sue Phillips. While Sue assured me that her story was not that interesting, she kept coming up with stories… I fondly remember playing leap frog with her in Lake Massawippi last year, but that was just the beginning… she's lost her kayaker around Lido Key, ridden the waves in the Chesapeake, and swam the width in Tahoe during a pandemic. Everyone has a story. I hope you enjoy Sue's!In her own words: Sue is a middle-aged swimmer, camper, scientist-civil servant, mother, trail runner and beginner rower. She has no stand-out achievements in any of these defining activities, although her 17 year-old daughter is pretty dang cool, she's supported some extremely important conservation science, and is purported to be quite a good swim companion. Swimming and supporting other swimmers are where she finds her greatest joy, particularly if she can do these things while camping, She's not swum terribly far or in any extraordinary conditions, although she's found all attempts to date to pile on distance and adversity to be quite fun, and is regularly and incrementally pushing limits in both.Questions, comments, feedback, or if you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, email me! mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.com Stay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming CollectiveMusic credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.
