Tom welcomes back Chris Vermeulen, the founder of The Technical Traders, to discuss the highly volatile year of 2025 so far. He notes that volatility has been extreme across various asset classes, driven by factors like geopolitical tensions, AI advancements, and fears of an impending recession. Vermeulen emphasized that while day traders thrive in such environments due to significant intraday swings, swing traders face increased risks with massive price gaps. Long-term investors should prioritize capital preservation by moving to cash until market clarity emerges, as he believes a bear market has already begun. He warned against the "buy the dip" mentality, especially for those nearing retirement, cautioning that this approach could lead to significant losses in a prolonged bear market. Vermeulen points out key indicators of an impending financial reset, including economic data showing hiring declines and rising unemployment, as well as housing market corrections with inventories soaring. Gold was discussed as a safe haven asset, though Vermeulen cautioned about potential pullbacks. He suggested that gold miners could offer better opportunities once the market stabilizes. Seasonality plays a role in his analysis, noting that stock markets typically struggle post-May, aligning with his bearish outlook. Real estate was also addressed, with Vermeulen predicting price drops of 15-20% and warning about the broader economic impact as housing values decline. He highlighted the psychological effect on investors when their largest asset depreciates, potentially leading to panic selling across markets. The U.S. dollar's potential strength was discussed, with Vermeulen suggesting it could rally in a risk-off environment. Send us a textOn this episode of The Get Ready Money Podcast, I spoke with Chris Vermeulen, founder and Chief Investment Officer of The Technical Traders about changing the way we think about money and asset revesting. In this episode we discussed:Success is about bringing in experiences from different areas. The importance of having a plan, systems, processes and checklist. The power of starting early, saving at least a little and doing so consistently. Why you need to diversify asset classes. The stock market is a long game. Defining technical trading. The more you know, the more successful you will be. Chris Vermeulen is a financial expert who challenges conventional investing wisdom and believes that investors should only own rising assets. With over 25 years of experience, Chris shares an alternative investment style called Asset Revesting that allows investors to achieve higher returns, lower drawdowns, and profit from bear markets.Chris founded TheTechnicalTraders.com, a platform that provides investors with Asset Revesting signals and education on using technical analysis and position and risk management. He is also the author of the books “Technical Trading Mastery” and “Asset Revesting,” his newest book, which explores this innovative investment method.Chris' investment philosophy is grounded in the belief that diversification and the buy- and-hold strategy can be dangerous for mature investors. Instead, he advocates for only owning assets that are rising in value, selling those that are in decline, and using technical analysis to identify and confirm these trends and price action. This approach helps investors achieve above-average returns while minimizing risk.Connect with Chris Vermeulen:Website: https://thetechnicaltraders.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ruschelle-khanna-lifestyle-for-legacy/YouTube Channel:The Technical Traders: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheTechnicalTradersBooks:Asset Revesting: How To Exclusively Hold Assets Rising in Value, Profit During Bear Markets and Continue Building Wealth in Retirement by Chris Vermeulen and Ashley Mulock (Amazon) https://amzn.to/3BeHH5GTechnical Trading Mastery, Second Edition: 7 Steps To Win With Logic by Chris Vermeulen (Amazon) https://amzn.to/47BfhPqMentioned this episode:Bloomberg Five Things To Start Your Day: https://www.bloomberg.com/account/newslettersSupport the showThe Get Ready Money Podcast and its guests do not provide investment advice. Barry Ritholtz, chairman and chief investment officer at Ritholtz Wealth Management, says that investors love a good story, but they tend to put too much stock in them and right now they are looking at a lot of things that either "can't" happen or "must" happen after two big-gain years for the market and they're making misguided decisions. He notes that the economy is likely to continue to avoid recession, especially as the 2020s will be looked back on as a period that pushed technology forward and created productivity and other gains that helped a mature economy keep growing. Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist for The Technical Traders, discusses why short-term concerns have him on the sidelines right now -- even with the market potentially set to gain another 5 to 8 percent before he expects a downturn -- and what he will need to see to feel comfortable moving back into the market. In The NAVigator segment, Miguel Laranjeiro, investment director for municipal debt at Abrdn, says the appetite for muni-bond assets has been growing at a point when "tax-exempt yields look really attractive."

Tom welcomes back Chris Vermeulen, the founder of The Technical Traders, to discuss market trends post-election and the impact of the looming economic debt situation. According to Chris, the small business sector has seen significant growth since Trump's win, as indicated by the Russell 2000's jump. However, he believes that the end of the economic cycle is near and advises investors to consider defensive assets like gold and utilities due to market uncertainty. Chris identifies the current market stage as a potential topping phase, with signs such as resistance levels in gold and energy stocks. Chris highlights the challenges facing the economy, including an expensive housing market, rising unemployment, and struggling business sales in the S&P 500. Delinquencies for credit cards and commercial real estate mortgages are increasing, signaling a potential looming financial reset. The nervousness within the market is evident through strong performances of the U.S. dollar and gold as safe havens, with the New York Stock Exchange experiencing distribution selling and institutions unloading large shares. Despite a bullish stance on equities, Chris suggests investing in bonds, the dollar, or cash during market volatility before transitioning to an inverse ETF during a potential bear market. He is excited about Bitcoin's potential upward movement, predicting price targets using Fibonacci extensions and technical analysis, but remains skeptical of it as a long-term investment due to its volatile nature. Chris expresses his concerns about gold from a cyclical standpoint, acknowledging that it has reached a significant resistance level, which is part of a 15-year cycle pattern. He suggests that the measured move is complete and that gold might consolidate before potentially moving up to around $3000. Chris emphasizes this doesn't mean a downward trend but rather a pause in the uptrend. Chris also believes that the Russell 2000, representing small caps in the US, serves as an indicator of when money might move out of riskier stocks into safe-havens like gold and the dollar. He anticipates gold will resume its defensive role once the stock market starts to show weakness, making it an attractive investment option again. May 7, 2024 – Big tech has lost momentum and defensive sectors like utilities are now gaining ground. Chris Vermeulen at The Technical Traders speaks with FS Insider about his market outlook and why he's currently sitting in cash...
Chris Vermeulen is a financial expert who challenges conventional investing wisdom and believes that investors should only own rising assets. With over 25 years of experience, Chris shares an alternative investment style called Asset Revesting that allows investors to achieve higher returns, lower drawdowns, and profit from bear markets. Chris founded TheTechnicalTraders.com, a platform that provides investors with Asset Revesting signals and education on using technical analysis and position and risk management. He is also the author of the books “Technical Trading Mastery” and “Asset Revesting,” his newest book, which explores this innovative investment method. Chris' investment philosophy is grounded in the belief that diversification and the buy and-hold strategy can be dangerous for mature investors. Instead, he advocates for only owning assets that are rising in value, selling those that are in decline, and using technical analysis to identify and confirm these trends and price action. This approach helps investors achieve above-average returns while minimizing risk. Listen to this insightful RIA episode with Chris Vermeulen about the art of technical trading. Here is what to expect on this week's show: - How technical analysis focuses on following price actions and trends across different asset classes. - Why The Technical Traders uses technical analysis to identify market directions and trends for investment. - Hos the Consistent Growth Strategy used by The Technical Traders aims to protect capital and profit from both rising and falling markets. - Why The Technical Traders focus on ETFs and rotate capital into assets that meet their risk criteria and are trending up. - How a significant market correction is imminent and there should be a strategy that provides an alternative to traditional buy-and-hold or active trading. Jeffrey Cleveland, chief economist at Payden & Rygel, says that current conditions -- with inflation falling significantly year-over-year and no attendant hike in unemployment and no recession -- are the proverbial soft landing, and he believes these conditions can persist at least through the rest of the year. The soft landing as the dominant macro story will give the Federal Reserve leeway to cut interest rates less than expected, Cleveland says, and he expects central bankers to make cuts cautiously and reluctantly. By comparison, in the Talking Technicals segment, Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist at The Technical Traders says that he thinks the stock market has one last leg up before the indexes -- which are showing signs of topping out -- take a turn for the worse, triggering a correction that he expects to start before election day in November. Further, Vermeulen says the rough market conditions will stick around, rather than representing a buying opportunity on the rebound. Plus, Larry McDonald, creator of The Bear Traps Report, is back to discuss his new book, "How to Listen When Markets Speak: Risks, Myths, and Investment Opportunities in a Radically Reshaped Economy."
Chris Vermuelen provides his views why he expects a massive correction in the S&P and the Nasdaq starting in May. Chris also provides his views on Bitcoin, Gold, Silver, Oil, USD, and Canadian real-estate (not good). Chris Vermeulen writes an independent, tactical ETF investment signal alert newsletter with a disciplined approach to helping you achieve your financial and lifestyle goals sooner with our unique Asset Revesting Strategy. At the Technical Traders, we trade and invest differently. It's a significant change from traditional investing. Our Consistent Growth Strategy generates reliable, above-average returns with a fraction of the portfolio volatility and risk compared to active trading and the buy-and-hope methods. Barry Ritholtz, chief investment officer at Ritholtz Wealth Management, says the Federal Reserve has done a good job reducing inflation, but he worries that chairman Jerome Powell could over-tighten the economy into a recession, largely because the central bank is tied to models from the 1970s and following an outdated gameplan from that era that could make inflation worse today. In a wide-ranging conversation, Ritzholtz expresses a largely optimistic view predicated on the Fed's strategy not making difficult conditions worse than they need to be. Also on the show, Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist for The Technical Traders, says that the big indexes have 'hit a wall,' and that the market needs to gather itself with a sideways move or slight step-back before it can break out of its current range. Plus, in the latest edition of 'Find Me The Money,' forensic accountant Tracy Coenen talks about the spending and money-movement patterns that are telltale signs that family money is being diverted, noting that there aren't many ways a spouse can hide money once their partner knows where to look.
Tom welcomes Chris, the founder of The Technical Traders, back to the show. Chris strictly follows price action and provides his thoughts on the SPY: he believes we are in a stage three topping pattern, which likely portents a further market decline. It has been a long time since we witnessed a broad stage four decline, so people have forgotten what this could entail: a twenty to forty percent drop. He uses the SPY as an indicator for the trend much of the market is experiencing. When a bear market arrives, people are oftentimes scared and forced to liquidate positions; everything falls - including oil and precious metals. Though, they tend to recover quickly once a bottom is reached, potentially by the end of the year. Chris explains the pitfalls and risks people should be aware of if they intend to stay invested during a bear market, which can take a long time to fully recover from. His method of counteracting this is utilizing inverse ETFs during declines, helping individuals maximize profits when the bull phase resumes. He and his firm make few trades and only utilize the most liquid ETFs. He terms coin re-vesting as reinvesting into the next best asset classes. We typically see bearish trends in the fall, with much market movement in the last quarter; a good opportunity for investors. Assets remain overvalued, thus would benefit from a correction. Unfortunately, many people get caught on the wrong side of these markets, so it is essential to protect your capital. Doug Ramsey, chief investment officer at The Leuthold Group foresees 'the best buying opportunity in the global stock market for at least a decade' to come into view after the market goes through a recession and some pain in the first half of 2023. He believes that valuations will reflect the economic ills first, saying investors should be prepared for 'significant further losses' of as much as 25 percent before the market reaches the purchasing point. Talking technical analysis, Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist at The Technical Traders certainly agrees with the assessment that trouble is coming, but he believes the downturn will take root and that any recovery -- at least anything occurring in the new year -- is likely to be lackluster. Plus, Chuck interviews Rob Wells, author of 'The Insider: How the Kiplinger Newsletter Bridged Washington and Wall Street.'
Tom welcomes Chris, founder of The Technical Traders, back to the show. Chris discusses how we're seeing some interesting price action, but we're likely at the complacency stage of a bear market. We're seeing interest return to the markets and some buying. Growth stocks are starting to come back to life. However, investors should be ready for another big leg down, as things could get uglier. Institutions are still being cautious. Markets seem like they need further correction. Cash can be one of the best positions, you don't always need to be in a trade. When things get chaotic, moving to something like the dollar index or even just cash can be optimal. We could still be a year out before gold and the miners make their next big move up. There is strong support around the $1680 level. Hopefully, gold finds its legs and heads back towards $2000. Silver tends to be much more volatile, as we've been seeing. Chris discusses where we are at in the commodity cycle. They will continue the rally once the dollar rolls over. It's likely by then the stock markets will have bottomed out. If big money is flowing into utilities or consumer staples, that can indicate a collapse. For the short term, he remains bullish on stocks, but it's important to carefully monitor the markets. Things could change quickly, and you won't want to be holding stocks. Chris explains why big dividend stocks are also dangerous in bear markets. He explains the benefits of properly positioning trades and using stops in the most effective way. Lastly, he discusses Technical Trader's Growth Strategy. Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist at The Technical Traders, says that 'the red flags are in the air that the market is ready to roll over,' and while he sees the current rally continuing for another month or two, any upward moves right now are setting up for a bear market, a downward move of more than 25 percent. "Somebody putting money into almost anything right now is carrying a ton of risk," Vermeulen says. "Everything is very overpriced." Also on the show, Chuck looks back at the completion of the NCAA men's basketball tournament on Monday and uses it as a metaphor for building a portfolio, and we revisit a recent discussion with Edward Yardeni, chief investment strategist at Yardeni Research.

Chris speaks about why Gold will rise to $2700 and then $7400 during this commodities bull market. Tom welcomes Chris Vermeulen, founder of Technical Traders, back to the show. Chris discusses the recent moves in the markets and why money has resumed the move into equities. We're seeing a new rally in most equities and this could spill over to the metals. The Russell 2000 is responding well and it could move 25% up. He believes this cycle may come to an end in January. September and October are often weak for markets but it's not unusual to see rallies in November. Once the momentum starts everyone tends to pile in. The dollar is trading at the very significant 94 levels and should it collapse this could be the impetus to drive the metals higher. Precious metals are pushing on the dollar and we're seeing a momentum shift in GDXJ. This pressure may be a sign that the dollar is failing. He prefers to focus on price but if other indicators and fundamentals line up those just act as a confidence booster. Chris discusses the potential for silver to have an explosive move at some point. It appears to be putting in a bottom but it still has a ways to go before we're through resistance. Energy prices may cause problems for miners since fuel costs are a big factor in mining. This may place pressure on metals and miners for a while. Energy sector stocks are likely to do very well but a rally may be short-lived. He expects elevated prices for commodities for the next couple of years before everything normalizes. Prices will likely never come down to where they were a few years ago. Many things will remain more expensive. Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist for The Technical Traders, says the market's frothy September has pushed it to where he's headed for cash, at least for the short term, avoiding what he thinks will be a short downturn leading into a sideways market and ultimately a buying opportunity, as he expects the market to rebound into a strong bull run that could last six to eight months. At that point, however, Vermeulen says the market's years-long rally could be running out of steam and on its last legs. Also on the show, David Meyer, president of the Public Investors Advocate Bar Association talks about why consumers are never paid in 30 percent of the arbitration victories against rogue brokers, Washington Post columnist Allan Sloan discusses the debt-ceiling debate's negative impact on the bond market and borrowing -- even if it ultimately gets passed -- and Chuck answers listener questions about gold and bitcoin, and selling stocks.
Tom welcomes Chris, founder of Technical Traders, back to the show. Chris discusses how we see sector rotation and sideways action in the stock market this year. We're waiting on which sectors will move next, and the direction of the market is currently uncertain. We may be in a summer doldrum period. When commodity markets begin to move in a serious way, that is often an indication that the equity markets are nearing a top. There could still, however, be a blow-off top in the equities. Significant moves involving the public and based on the news are often quite dangerous. This is because the public tends to push the price on the information too fast and too quickly. The result is a crash in that equity as its price corrects. This is why it can be hazardous trading around the news. Chris believes that smart money is now reallocating due to overall market uncertainty. As a result, we see flows into the bond markets. In addition, transportation is showing weakness due to a slowing economy and lack of orders. Chris discusses the dollar and why he is waiting for it to briefly rally and a severe subsequent sell-off. He expects the metals and miners will go ballistic when this occurs. As a result, finding metals anywhere near spot prices may soon be very difficult. Silver is showing relative strength, and it's likely to outperform in the next rally. It has some serious resistance, but it will head for $34 fairly quickly once it breaks out. Chris outlines where the GDX is likely to head and notes there is excellent momentum to the upside. Over the coming weeks, he anticipates the miners heading higher. Lastly, Chris discusses the energy markets and why he expects a continued rally for crude. He also touches on bitcoin and discusses what indicators to watch in bubble markets. Chris has been involved in the markets since 1997. He is an internationally recognized technical analyst, trader, and author. Years of research, trading, and helping individual traders worldwide have taught him that many traders have great trading ideas, but they lack one thing. As a result, they struggle to execute trades systematically for consistent results. Chris helps educate traders, and his mission is to help his clients boost their trading performance while reducing market exposure and portfolio volatility. He has also been on the cover of AmalgaTrader Magazine and featured in Futures Magazine, Gold-Eagle, Safe Haven, The Street, Kitco, Financial Sense, Dick Davis Investment Digest, and dozens of other financial websites.
Ed Clissold, chief US strategist at Ned Davis Research, says that the stock market should remain strong while the economy gets back to full speed, but he notes that things could change quickly thereafter and says investors will want to get defensive. He does not expect a recession or significant bear market, but believes investors will want to play defe3nse and choose buying opportunities carefully. Also on the show, Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist for The Technical Traders, says that the market's technicals are all green lights right now, but that the color is likely to change with a consolidation move -- not necessarily a bear market but months of sideways to gradual decline -- that could start late this month and last into the fall. Plus, Ismat Mangla of MagnifyMoney.com discusses study research showing how the timing of retirement can impact lifetime housing costs, and Jennifer Barrett, author of, 'Think Like a Breadwinner,' discusses her book.
