Barry Ritholtz, chairman and chief investment officer at Ritholtz Wealth Management, says that investors love a good story, but they tend to put too much stock in them and right now they are looking at a lot of things that either "can't" happen or "must" happen after two big-gain years for the market and they're making misguided decisions. He notes that the economy is likely to continue to avoid recession, especially as the 2020s will be looked back on as a period that pushed technology forward and created productivity and other gains that helped a mature economy keep growing. Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist for The Technical Traders, discusses why short-term concerns have him on the sidelines right now -- even with the market potentially set to gain another 5 to 8 percent before he expects a downturn -- and what he will need to see to feel comfortable moving back into the market. In The NAVigator segment, Miguel Laranjeiro, investment director for municipal debt at Abrdn, says the appetite for muni-bond assets has been growing at a point when "tax-exempt yields look really attractive."
Miguel Laranjeiro, investment director for municipal debt at Abrdn, says the appetite for muni-bond assets has been growing at a point when "tax-exempt yields look really attractive," with tax-equivalent yields running up to 6 percent for investment-grade bonds, an attractive option compared to corporate and other bond types. Laranjeiro notes that potential policy changes being discussed in Washington are likely to help muni-bond investors and issuers, and that the biggest concern — a repeal of the tax exemption for muni bonds — is unlikely, and would not impact current paper if enacted. Further, Laranjeiro discusses how the wildfires in California — and similar disaster scenarios — are having some unexpected impacts on the muni-bond market.

Josh Duitz, Portfolio Manager for the Aberdeen Global Infrastructure Fund, took a break from the program at the Active Investment Company's Fall Roundtable in New York this week to discuss the state of infrastructure investing now that the presidential election has been decided and the policies of the second Trump Administration are becoming more clear. Duitz says that deregulation and lower corporate taxes will help certain freight, for example, balancing out initial concerns about how tariffs might impact demand. He also notes digs into renewable energy — which critics have said they expect the Trump Administration to hurt — noting that he expects demand to keep it rolling, with some of that demand also coming from the nation's increasing reliance on artificial intelligence.

Miguel Laranjeiro, Investment Director at abrdn, says we are seeing "the beginning of a robust in-flow cycle into the muni space," noting that credit spreads and all-in yields are attractive and that the value of the tax exemption will particularly pay off now. He says he expects the Federal Reserve's long-awaited rate cuts will end the longest yield curve inversion ever for municipal bonds. Once the yield curve has normalized, Laranjeiro expects leverage costs to become a positive for the total return of levered muni funds, creating an additional impetus for investors.

In this episode of the Rainmaker Podcast, host Gui Costin sits down with Steve Dunn, the Head of U.S. Distribution and Exchange Traded Funds at abrdn. The discussion opens with Steve sharing his journey into the financial services industry, noting that like many in distribution, his entry was somewhat accidental. Starting his career at Vanguard, Steve quickly recognized his passion for the client-facing side of the business and the investment aspects that kept him engaged. A pivotal moment early in his career occurred when a client introduced him to the concept of ETFs, sparking his interest and eventually leading him to a long and successful career in the space.Steve shares an anecdote about how a chance encounter at a conference connected him with iShares, a major player in the ETF market, which became a cornerstone of his career. Despite initial uncertainties, his move to iShares set the stage for nearly 25 years in the ETF business, leading him through roles at major firms like BlackRock, Deutsche, and eventually abrdn. The conversation transitions into Steve's approach to distribution. He highlights the importance of having a small, nimble team that is versatile and able to cover multiple areas. Rather than working in silos or by territory, Steve emphasizes the need for flexibility in distribution teams, ensuring that the right person is always matched with the right opportunity, regardless of geographical boundaries. Both Gui and Steve stress the benefits of not channelizing sales, a common practice in many firms. Steve explains that this approach allows his team to focus on client needs rather than rigid territorial rules, creating a more efficient and client-focused operation. He values collaboration and believes that the best results come when everyone works together to capitalize on opportunities. When discussing leadership, Steve describes his management style as one rooted in transparency, consistency, and compassion. He believes in creating an environment where team members feel supported but also held accountable. Each individual on his team is treated fairly, though not necessarily equally, as Steve tailors his approach to meet the unique needs of each team member. This personalized leadership style fosters trust and encourages his team to take initiative while knowing they have his support.A key topic in the podcast is the role of data in distribution. Steve points out that while there is an abundance of data available, the challenge lies in extracting actionable insights from it. He mentions that as distribution shifts to being more data-driven, it's crucial for teams to have the skills to interpret data and apply it effectively to target clients and grow the business. Steve believes that using data effectively will allow smaller teams, like his at Abrdn, to compete and thrive in the market. Finally, Steve discusses the importance of communication, both within his team and with higher-level executives. He emphasizes constant, clear communication as a critical factor in keeping the team aligned and moving toward common goals, especially in a fast-paced, ever-changing industry like finance.
If you were hoping for some stable predictability in the markets, well, 2024 might not be your year. Sree Kochugovindan, senior research economist at abrdn, has been watching the recent blast higher in volatility. She sat down with Carl recently and discussed how interest rate decisions from the world's big central banks (especially in the US and Japan) have driven a lot of the market's swings. But, she noted that other things are playing a role, too, and with the US presidential election just a few months away, things are likely to remain tumultuous for a while yet. Luckily, she's got some insights for investors and economists, as they brace for the potential outcomes.Listen in the Finimize app, or wherever you get your podcasts.Partner with us: https://business.finimize.com/Subscribe to the Finimize Newsletter: https://finimize.com/

Jason Akus, Senior Investment Director and Head of Healthcare Investing at abrdn and manager of the firm's four closed-end funds covering biotech and healthcare, says that the stock market appears to be broadening out and that healthcare and biotech are both likely to be beneficiaries. Healthcare stocks have generally lagged the stock market since the start of 2023, but with the Standard & Poor's Health Care index up 11 percent in 2024 — respectable but still trailing the broader S&P 500 by about seven percentage points — there are strong signs of recovery. As the catch-up trade materializes, Akus believes there will be no shortage of potential opportunities ready to benefit even if the economy begins to slow.
Jonathan Mondillo, head of North American fixed income for abrdn says that record discount levels for municipal bond closed-end funds, coupled with attractive yields on those funds, are creating real opportunities for investors, though he warns about the middle of the yield curve, noting that the most compelling values are at the two ends of the barbell -- the short-term and long-duration paper -- which he expects to continue even as the rate cycle plays out and the Federal Reserve finally moves to cut rates.
Kevin "Lex" Luthringhausen, chief content officer at Tradier Hub, says he has been stubbornly short the stock market expecting a mild pullback that hasn't been coming because the market is "insanely bullish" right now, having pushed stocks, gold and cryptocurrency into record territory. While Luthringhausen is confident that there will be a consolidation, he does not expect "a massive sell-off" until after the presidential election, when he foresees a potential 10 percent correction; in the interim, he is expecting a solid year with slight pullbacks but near constant upward pressure. Dan Omstead, global head of health care investments at Abrdn, says in 'The NAVigator segment' that health care's recent rally from several years of struggle represents the start of a positive trend that has the ability to run from here. Steve Coughran, author of "Reframing Rich: Creating a Better Relationship with Your Money, Yourself, and Others" talks in the Book Interview about getting the right money mindset to achieve and accept financial success, and Clayton LiaBraaten discusses a Truecaller survey showing that one in five Americans was the victim of a telephone scam in 2023, a problem that cost U.S. consumers more $24.5 billion.
Dan Omstead, global head of health care investments at abrdn -- part of the team running the firm's Healthcare Investors, Life Science Investors, Healthcare Opportunities and World Healthcare funds -- says that after several years of struggling, the recent rally in health care and biotech is significant, the start of a positive trend that should be able to withstand the pressures of an election year to keep running higher from here. Omstead identifies a few areas -- most notably the GLP-1 weight management drugs -- that have the potential to not only change the world but to become massive sellers as they make and take over the market.

Josh Duitz, head of global income at Abrdn -- manager of the Aberdeen Global Infrastructure Income Fund -- says that private infrastructure investments have attracted so much money that valuations have gotten off-kilter, creating an 'illiquidity premium' that 'makes no sense.' Duitz explains that publicly listed companies should have higher valuations -- because investors value the liquidity and ability to trade them easily -- meaning that current conditions are making public infrastructure investments particularly attractive right now. Duitz -- who says that politics isn't likely to impact infrastructure as much as headlines suggest -- makes a broad case for infrastructure investing now, but particularly likes the renewable space.
