Allison Kaplan Sommer and Noah Efron talk about (1) Prime Minister Netanyahu's decision to reinstate the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza: why did this happen now and why the hell did it not happen before; and (2) What we learn (if anything) from the fact that Israel won the popular vote in this week's Eurovision Song Contest, and what we learn (if anything) from the fact that Israel came in 15th (!) in the contest's professional “jury” vote, and what we learn (if anything) from juxtaposing the two votes. All this and the sixtieth anniversary of the execution-by-hanging of Eli Cohen, “our man in Damascus”.  Plus, more music of these times. Hear the Extra-Special, Special Extra Segment on Patreon For our most unreasonably generous Patreon supporters, in our extra-special, special extra discussion: Yair Golan, head of the “Democrats Party” (what used to be Labor and Meretz), says that Israel “wages war against civilians” and “kills babies for a hobby”. Well, what can you say to that?

Recording of a NJN webinar on April 16, 2025  Yair Golan is the leader of The Democrats, a political party formed last year when the Labor and Meretz parties merged. Before entering politics, he had a distinguished military career, retiring as a Major General and serving as Deputy Chief of Staff of the IDF.  His actions on the morning of October 7th – in which he rushed on his own accord to the area around Gaza and rescued people from Hamas attacks – have earned him a special status in Israel. This conversation, hosted by NJN President and CEO Hadar Susskind and NJN Co-Chair Nomi Colton-Max, covers the political situation in Israel, the developments in the war, and the World Zionist Congress.  Cast a vote in the WZC elections here: https://azm.castiron.votem.net/election/037548cb-4cbb-4a94-aa9a-8aef017d4ddf Learn more about the Hatikvah Slate: https://www.hatikvahslate.net/ Give to NJN: https://www.newjewishnarrative.org/give

Today we sit down with one of the most interesting figures in Israeli public life, former prime minister Naftali Bennett, who served as Israel's 13th Prime Minister (2021-22), and previously, in a Netanyahu-led government as Defense Minister (2019-20), and earlier on as Economy Minister. When he himself was prime minister, Naftali Bennett's government was comprised of 8 political parties from across the ideological spectrum - from his own Yamina Party and the New Hope party on the Right, through Yair Lapid's party in the center, to the Labor and Meretz parties on the Left. And then – for the first time in an Israeli Government – there was the Arab Muslim party, Ra'am. In his business career, Prime Minister Bennett was a successful start-up entrepreneur. And he served in Israel's elite Sayaret Mechtel special forces. In this long-form interview, we try to better understand Naftali Bennett's worldview on a range of issues in Israel's post-10/07 reality – its strategic situation as it faces multiple war fronts or possible war fronts, and we wanted to better understand his vision for addressing the growing internal Israeli tensions – within the Israeli public..

Israeli protest movement hopes to win over voters in local elections

After dominating political conversation in Israel for the past eight months, the protest movement against the judicial coup – which has brought millions of Israelis out to the streets – made a strategic decision. In the nationwide municipal elections on October 31, various protest groups will field candidates in mayoral and city council races, hoping that voters will use the local political sphere to send a resolute national message against the Netanyahu government's attempts to change Israeli democracy. On Haaretz Weekly, two Tel Aviv City Council candidates join host Allison Kaplan Sommer to discuss the bold move. Noah Efron is head of the Green Party – which, together with Meretz and a list of protest activists, is running as the “New Contract” slate in Tel Aviv. He says on the podcast that he believes when we wake up in Israel on November 1, “there will be council members and a number of mayors whose identity was forged primarily politically in these protests. It will be dramatic.” Efron, who served on the Tel Aviv Municipality in the past, also discusses the complexities of integrating the protest movement into the framework of local politics, calling it “an extremely exciting challenge to turn the big words with capital letters like ‘Freedom' and ‘Democracy' into policy.” Together with Efron is Inbal Orpaz, a high-tech marketing executive and active member of the tech protest. She talks about what has driven members of her industry – who were previously politically uninvolved, focusing instead on their world of startups and company sales – to become some of the most outspoken and active leaders of the protests. She discusses her motivations for becoming active in the protest movement – and her recent decision to run for city councilor alongside Efron. “When this government was elected, I felt as if all of my identities were under attack: as a woman, as a secular person, as someone who's part of the tech sector. I understood if I want to live here – and I want to live here – to live in Israel and to live in Tel Aviv, I must fight for the future of this country. Living in the place they want this country to become is not an option for me.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

November 1st, 10pm. Israel's election exit polls start rolling in. The right wing with Bibi at its helm have achieved the unthinkable, a triumphant comeback. Some left wing parties are even struggling to pass the threshold, leaving them on the precipice of oblivion. One, Meretz, doesn't make it. The right have done it again, and celebrations are in order. In the words of the great Jewish poet, Pink!, "I'm coming up so you better get this party started. Get this party started." BUT...record scratch sound effect… that was all some 45 days ago. A month and a half later, and still no government. Bibi is expected to announce his new coalition this Tuesday, but time shall tell. For the expected Premier, the struggle was real. 45 days of agony. Maybe they'll instate a new Jewish holiday to commemorate this time. It seemed that with each passing day another exciting expected right wing reform evaporated into thin air. Judicial reforms, economic reforms, police reforms. Poof, poof, poof. Now, all that remains are two questions. Will a government be formed at all? And if so, will it even be right wing? To help us answer these questions, we're joined by a beloved friend of the podcast, a contender for the title of Nicest of Jewish Boy, Roy Iddan. Roy Iddan is a scriptwriter and political analyst. He's consulted for some of the major political parties in Israel including the Likud and Blue and White. He's also the creator of the hugely successful Israeli police drama, Manayek, which was recently sold to none other than HBO! We're thrilled to be joined by Roy to talk politics, police and TV.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday.Joining host Amanda Borschel-Dan today are political correspondent Tal Schneider, military correspondent Emanuel Fabian and legal affairs correspondent Jeremy Sharon. The body of Israeli 12th grader Tiran Fero was recovered by Israel this morning from Palestinian gunmen who kidnapped it in Jenin following a fatal car crash. Fabian tells us how this heart-breaking saga ended. Wednesday morning Jerusalem faced a double bombing, which killed 16-year-old Israeli-Canadian Aryeh Schupak and injured dozens more. Fabian updates with more information about the perpetrators and the hunt to find them. The coalition talks are still in process. Schneider explains how yesterday's terror attack affect them and what's expected next. One of the first orders of business with the new government could be the Override Clause, which could allow the Knesset to override High Court of Justice rulings, potentially by a slim majority of 61. Sharon shares concerns from some 100 law professors and lecturers across Israel's universities and academic institutions who published a letter this week opposing the proposed bill. Finally, Schneider speaks about the dire situation facing far-left party Meretz, which did not make it into the Knesset in the recent elections. Discussed articles include: Teenager's body snatched by Palestinian gunmen returned to family in Israel Teen terror victim Aryeh Schupak mourned as ‘fighter' after Jerusalem bombing Likud, right-wing allies cite bombings to inject new urgency into coalition talks Smotrich takes aim at Likud, muddying reports of progress in coalition finagling Law professors urge incoming coalition to reject High Court override law Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. It needed just 3,800 more votes to pass, and its approximately 151,000 votes will not count in the division of seats, leaving the bloc led by Likud leader MK Benjamin Netanyahu with 64 seats and the parties that oppose him with 56 seats.  "This is a very difficult moment for me, and for my friends in Meretz. On September 15th, Israeli parties must submit their final lists of candidates and be inscribed in the book of parties for the upcoming election. One week from now, parties of the left and right that have been flirting with merging or splitting must make a final decision. Will the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism split into two factions and what would that mean for Benjamin Netanyahu's chances to return to the prime minister's office?  Why do Arab voters want the three parties of the Joint List to remain glued together, and can Israel's left-wing parties Labor and Meretz work it out this time? This week's Election Overdose breaks down the final party dilemmas and the consequences of each scenario. We also survey the dazzling new posters of Benny Gantz around town and ask what exactly was Netanyahu doing in a 700,000-shekel bulletproof glass, air-conditioned Bibi-mobile this week on a tour named "Bibiba"?  Each week, hosts Anshel Pfeffer and Dahlia Scheindlin discuss all the news, polls, history and party trivia you need to know for Israel's upcoming election. Our guest this week is Member of Knesset Yossi Shain, who joins the podcast to discuss how Yisrael Beitenu, his party, is preparing for the November 1 election. Shain argues that the secular right-wing party led by Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman represents 'the true right-wing' in Israel, unlike the religious and far-right alliance of parties that was merged last week under pressure from opposition leader Netanyahu.  Shain also explains how Lieberman, who has a long history of harsh statements against Israel's Arab politicians, found himself in a coalition together with Mansour Abbas of the United Arab List. In his view,  Lieberman hasn't changed; but Mansour Abbas recognized Israel as a Jewish state, which made it possible for Yisrael Beitenu to cooperate with him.  In other news, Meretz elected Zehava Galon as its old-new leader; Prime Minister Yair Lapid had a heart-to-heart with President Biden about Iran, and Israel narrowly averted a teacher's strike ahead of the new school year.
