pWotD Episode 2684: Linkin Park Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 540,248 views on Friday, 6 September 2024 our article of the day is Linkin Park.Linkin Park is an American rock band formed in Agoura Hills, California, in 1996. The band's current lineup consists of vocalist/rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Mike Shinoda, lead guitarist Brad Delson, DJ/turntablist Joe Hahn, bassist Dave Farrell, co-lead vocalist Emily Armstrong, and drummer Colin Brittain. The lineup for the band's first seven studio albums included lead vocalist Chester Bennington and drummer Rob Bourdon; following Bennington's suicide in July 2017, the band entered an indefinite hiatus. In September 2024, Linkin Park's reformation was announced along with the addition of Armstrong and Brittain.Categorized mainly as alternative rock and nu metal, Linkin Park's earlier music spanned a fusion of heavy metal and hip hop, while their later music features more electronica and pop elements. Linkin Park rose to international fame with their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory (2000), which became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released during the peak of the nu metal scene, the album's singles' heavy airplay on MTV led to the singles "One Step Closer", "Crawling", and "In the End" all charting highly on the US Mainstream Rock chart. The lattermost also crossed over to the number two spot on the nation's Billboard Hot 100. Their second album, Meteora (2003), continued the band's success. The band explored experimental sounds on their third album, Minutes to Midnight (2007). By the end of the decade, Linkin Park was among the most successful and popular rock acts. The band continued to explore a wider variation of musical types on their fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010), layering their music with more electronic sounds. The band's fifth album, Living Things (2012), combined musical elements from all of their previous records. Their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014), returned to a heavier rock sound, while their seventh album, One More Light (2017), was a substantially more pop-oriented record. Linkin Park is among both the best-selling bands of the 21st century and the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have won two Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, and three World Music Awards. In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth-greatest band of the music video era and the third-best of the new millennium. Billboard ranked Linkin Park No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decade list. In 2012, the band was voted as the greatest artist of the 2000s in a Bracket Madness poll on VH1. In 2014, the band was declared as "The Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now" by Kerrang!.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:25 UTC on Saturday, 7 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Linkin Park on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Emma.

”Being a writer is just bloody hard work and passion. It is a kind of madness, which compels you every day to go to say, ‘OK, let's do it again today' “ Manreet Sodhi Someshwar is the author of nine novels - including the Long Walk Home, Radiance of a Thousand Suns, and most recently the Partition Trilogy - a historical fiction novel series about one of the great human tragedies of the 20th century. Manreet's articles and essays have appeared in the NY Times, the International Herald Tribune, and the South China Morning Post, among others. Manreeet has taught for the New York Public Library and the City College of New York - and she's a former corporate citizen having done stints in Asia, and a parent grappling with the world our kids will inherit. Manreet's recently complete Partition Trilogy - a series of 3 books titled Lahore, Hyderabad, and Kashmir - are a historical fiction set during, before, and immediately after the Partition - and independence of - India and Pakistan of 1947. Partition is among the the great humanitarian disasters of the 20th century - and the largest mass migration in history. The history of Partition impacts and informs much of what is happening today, in both Asia, and the United States - from the tensions between India and Pakistan, and the rise of nationalism / extremism in our politics around the world. Manreet's unique voice focuses not just on the personal musings of these larger than life historical figures - like India's founding fathers Gandhi & Nehru, but she also breathes life into characters who represent the stats and figures that we sometimes gloss over when we hear of a tragedy (including the role - and subversion of women by history). This is a powerful conversation about the weaponization of history, and how storytelling - and fact-checking - have to work hand in hand to inform the next generation. This is a past conversation from Raman's other podcast, Modern Minorities, where each week we share minority conversations for all of our majority years. You'll enjoy this candid conversation that we hope will provide new perspectives and learnings.

Hier heb ik het dit keer over:A place for my head: 'I wanna be in another place. I hate when you say you don't understand. I wanna be in the energy, not with the enemy. A place for my head.'De muziek uit je jeugd opzetten voelt toch altijd als thuiskomen.Mijn jeugd is Linkin Park. Figure.09: 'You've become a part of me. I can't separate myself from what I've done. Giving up a part of me, I've let myself become you.'Genoemde mensen: Chester Bennington, Mike Shinoda, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles. Slaap lekker.Support the show1) Ontvang elke woensdagavond een mail van me over gevoelens waar niemand over praat.

Sages Book: The Golden Book By Saint Germain | The Deepest Spiritual Knowledge. The 33 Discourses contained in this book were dictated over a visible Light and Sound Ray in 1932 by the Ascended Master Saint Germain and those other Ascended Masters directly concerned with this Activity. The sound of His Voice was physically audible to everyone in the room. At times, His Visible, Tangible Presence also stood within the room, when He radiated the Power and Energy of the Light Rays to accomplish special work. The training and preparation for Him to do this at the present crisis of the outer world was given us over a period of thirty years, that it might be accomplished at this time, and assistance from the Ascended Masters come forth in this way to protect and free all individuals who make conscious effort to correct themselves and attain Mastery over all things on this earth. Never before, except in the Retreats of the Great White Brotherhood, has such intensified, transcendent Instruction concerning the “I AM” been given to individuals. Not for thousands of years have the True Inner Instruction and Use of the Sacred Flame been taught to mankind as Saint Germain and others of the Ascended Masters have revealed. Only fragments of the real understanding of the “I AM Presence” have been given to the outer world until now. The Ascended Master Saint Germain says: “It is the most important Understanding mankind can ever have, and there is no Freedom nor Perfection for the individual, except through this conscious application.” He considers it of such paramount importance that He dictated more than thirty-three Discourses in which He explains what happens in the outer Life of the individual when one says “I AM.” May this book of “I AM” Discourses anchor the attention of all who read or contact it so powerfully upon each individual's own Divinity, that the full Ascended Master Consciousness of the “Mighty I AM Presence” shall fill the earth, and release with the Power of a Thousand Suns the Eternal Dominion of “The Light of God That Never Fails.” Here Is The Secret Of Secrets And The Mystery Of Mysteries. Guarded from the majority of the population, known only to a privileged few, and now revealed. This is the Sacred Teaching that the Master Saint Germain laid out for his Golden Age, and which forms part of the Third Cycle of Teachings of the Brotherhood of Saint Germain, after which the disciple finds himself in full knowledge of his presence ¨I Am¨ . The more the content of these words is studied and meditated on, the more protected and elevated the disciple becomes. We know that the beloved master does not use any dissimulation when he shows us the dangers and consequences caused by those who focus their attention on lower laws, people and vibrations, using his teachings. The fulfillment of these teachings depends exclusively on the student. "I Am" Prayer I invoke at that moment the great universal light. The violet flame that heals, restores and transmutes so that it cleanses my entire subconscious. I feel and visualize this light that flows from above, which involves and penetrates my being, identifying every part of me that still needs healing. I am open and willing to heal all the inner wounds of my being at this moment. That all the painful past becomes learning. May all sorrow become forgiveness. That all blame turns into self-acceptance. May all attachment be freedom. May all resentment become compassion. May all judgment become respect. That every feeling of rejection becomes strength. That all pain turns into love. I exhale all wounds out of my being and put an end to all unresolved situations. I do not judge, nor condemn nor victimize myself. I free myself from all pain. I breathe in all the universal love that heals me from within. I feel prepared and firm to leave the pain in the past and open myself to a new phase in my life. So it is! So it's done! Amen!

Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills, California. The band's current lineup comprises vocalist/rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Mike Shinoda, lead guitarist Brad Delson, bassist Dave Farrell, DJ/turntablist Joe Hahn and drummer Rob Bourdon, all of whom are founding members. Vocalists Mark Wakefield and Chester Bennington are former members of the band. Categorized as alternative rock, Linkin Park's earlier music spanned a fusion of heavy metal and hip hop, while their later music features more electronica and pop elements.Formed in 1996, Linkin Park rose to international fame with their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory (2000), which became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released during the peak of the nu metal scene, the album's singles' heavy airplay on MTV led the singles "One Step Closer", "Crawling" and "In the End" all to chart highly on the Mainstream Rock chart; the latter crossed over to the pop chart. Their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014), returned to a heavier rock sound, and their seventh album, One More Light (2017), was their first pop-oriented record. Linkin Park went on a hiatus when longtime lead vocalist Bennington died by suicide in July 2017. In April 2022, Shinoda revealed the band was neither working on new music nor planning on touring for the foreseeable future.Linkin Park is among the best-selling bands of the 21st century and the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have won two Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards and three World Music Awards. In 2014, the band was declared as "The Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now" by Kerrang!.

Kathy Geritz, film curator at Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive, discusses the films of Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambety with host Richard Wolinsky. A series of films by and about the director run from Friday, January 21st through Sunday February 6th. Djibril Diop Mambety (1945-1998) directed two features, Touki Bouki and Hyenas, and a handful of short subjects, but despite his limited output, his singular style and bold looks at Senegalese life and the divisions between wealthy and poor, and the legacy of colonialism make him a major figure in world cinema and, of course, African cinema. These films, plus documentaries about the life and work of Mambety, are being shown on different nights at BAM/PFA. Touki Bouki and his first short, Contras City, can be found on the Criterion app. Hyenas, two of his shorts, Le Franc and The Little Girl Who Sold The Sun, along with a documentary, A Thousand Suns, are on the free Kanopy app from local libraries. A look at the making of Touki Bouki, The Prince of Colobane, is available on YouTube. Mambety Wikipedia page. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Covid 1/7: The Fire of a Thousand Suns, published by Zvi on the LessWrong. I'll summarize everything up front. Might as well get on with it. Let's do the numbers. The Numbers Predictions Prediction last week: 14.3% positive rate on 9.7 million tests, and an average of 2,500 deaths, again with wide error bars. Results: 16.4% positive rate on 9.3 million tests, and an average of 2,657 deaths. The phase shift on 12/30, in the wake of Christmas, seems to have been real, giving us the clear holiday bump we did not see from previous holidays. That was both the very bad outcome for infections I was worried about, and also not high on my list of things to be concerned or furious about this week. For deaths, my estimate was lower than it should have been and I should have assumed a full reversion, so on reflection it's my mistake rather than especially bad news. The new strain is not yet prevalent enough to be noticeably impacting the numbers. Prediction: 17.0% positive rate on 9.5 million tests, and an average of 2,800 deaths. The holidays are over, there will be some fallout, with things getting slightly worse, but with the main boost in deaths from Christmas mostly coming later. Deaths Date WEST MIDWEST SOUTH NORTHEAST Oct 29-Nov 4 956 1977 2309 613 Nov 5-Nov 11 1089 2712 2535 870 Nov 12-Nov 18 1255 2934 2818 1127 Nov 19-Nov 25 1761 4169 3396 1714 Nov 26-Dec 2 1628 3814 2742 1939 Dec 3-Dec 9 2437 5508 4286 2744 Dec 10-Dec 16 3278 5324 4376 3541 Dec 17-Dec 23 3826 5158 5131 3772 Dec 24-Dec 30 3363 3668 4171 3640 Dec 31-Jan 6 5320 5036 6072 4986 This is the one place it's not as bad as it looks. The data source for these numbers is Wikipedia, which shows a relatively large amount of shifting of deaths from last week into this week. If we assume that a lot of this week's deaths were actually last week, that explains much of the increase. It's not good news or anything, it's definitely bad news, but it is not full on terrifying like it would be if we didn't know about Christmas. We still should expect further increases in the next few weeks before the tide likely temporarily turns. Positive Test Percentages Percentages Northeast Midwest South West 11/5 to 11/11 5.56% 17.51% 9.89% 8.31% 11/12 to 11/18 6.99% 18.90% 11.64% 10.66% 11/19 to 11/25 7.00% 16.62% 10.41% 11.75% 11/26 to 12/2 8.38% 17.90% 12.45% 12.79% 12/3 to 12/9 10.47% 17.94% 13.70% 12.76% 12/10 to 12/16 10.15% 15.63% 15.91% 13.65% 12/17 to 12/23 9.88% 14.65% 15.78% 13.82% 12/24 to 12/30 10.65% 14.54% 17.07% 12.90% 12/31 to 1/6 12.18% 17.03% 19.69% 15.94% No way to sugar coat this one. Everything is pointed in the wrong direction in a clear phase shift. The good news is that it could be a one-time move from Christmas, and thus we can still plausibly expect things to remain stable from this point forward without waiting for further control systems to kick in. I hope to start seeing slow improvements soon, but I must admit that the overall graph is not as encouraging of that as I thought a few weeks ago, especially outside of the Midwest, and the turning point may be farther off than we'd like. The Midwest is still probably past its peak for this wave, even if everyone else has to wait a bit. Musical sisters bring sound and soul to cello and guitar

Welcome to Times Will Tell, the weekly podcast from The Times of Israel.  This week, we're speaking to the Djamchid Sisters, Shay-Li Djamchid and Eden Djamchid, sisters in life and in music, who have been composing, playing and singing together for the last 15 years, since they were teens. Their new single, "B'Yadayim Shelcha," ("In Your Hands") was recently released as part of their second album, "A Thousand Suns." It's an album that's been long awaited by local 88FM listeners, as well as their fans around the country.  During the conversation, the two sisters speak about being born in Jerusalem into a musical family. Shay-Li picked up the guitar when she was still in grade school, and began writing songs and music on her own. Her younger sister Eden, only by a year and a half, began learning how to play the cello at the age of five, when she was still in kindergarten. The two began playing and singing together from their bedrooms in their teens and performing soon followed, with a serious approach to their music from the very start. This latest collection of songs, say the sisters, reflects where they are in life now, older, wiser, still full of hopes and dreams.  Times Will Tell podcasts are available for download on iTunes, TuneIn, Pocket Casts, Stitcher, PlayerFM or wherever you get your podcasts. Boxset 20th Anniversary Edition Artista:  Linkin Park Sello Discográfico: Warner Código de barras: 093624893233 Año: 2020 País: Alemania En esta ocasión, reseñamos los temas: ‘Papercut’, ‘One Step Closer , ‘Points Of Authority’, ‘Crawling’, ‘In The End’ y ‘Be Myself’. Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, ATLANTICS marks the feature narrative debut of director Mati Diop. Along the Atlantic coast of Africa, a soon-to-be-inaugurated futuristic tower looms over a suburb of Dakar. Ada, 17, is in love with Souleimane, a young construction worker. But she has been promised to another man. One night, Souleimane and his co-workers disappear at sea. Soon after, they come back to haunt their old neighbourhood by taking possession of the girlfriends they left behind. Some of the workers have come claiming revenge and threaten to burn the tower down if the developer does not pay their wages. But Souleiman has come back for Ada, so they can be together one last time. Director and writer Mati Diop joins us for a conversation on her compelling new film, finding love, and the mythology of a ghost story. About the filmmaker: Trained in Le Fresnoy (National Studio of Contemporary Arts – a leading and very selective French artistic institution), Mati Diop directed four shorts and a medium-length film which received the “Martin E. Segal – Emerging Artist Award” of the Lincoln Center (USA) in 2016. A THOUSAND SUNS (2013), BIG IN VIETNAM (2011), SNOW CANON (2010) and ATLANTIQUES (2009) were selected and awarded in a wide number of international festivals such as the Venice International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the Viennale, The Indie Lisboa International Film Festival, and the FID Marseille. They were also programmed in the MoMA and in the Moving Image Museum (USA). As an actress, Mati Diop played in HERMIA Y HELENA by director Matias Piñeiro (2015), FORT BUCHANAN by Benjamin Crotty (2014), SIMON KILLER by Antonio Campos (2012) and 35 SHOTS OF RHUM by Claire Denis (2008). Well, it's finally happened: Criminal Minds does 9/11. Mind you, they don't actually take on that case, as 9/11 was allegedly already solved years ago. A plane crashes and it reminds everyone of 9/11, especially Jennifer Love Hewitt, who lost family in the attacks. "A Thousand Suns" is a real shitshow with multiple red herrings, some choice anti-Muslim and anti-foreigner bigotry and Reid doing some obnoxious planesplaining. It's the biggest crime yet on Criminal Minds and still the episode manages to be boring and stupid. But hey, there's more PLANE.

When Brighter Than A Thousand Suns first changed their name from Self Made Soul in 2010, they had no idea of the considerable journey they were about to embark on. Originally starting with a post-hardcore sound, they quickly caught the attention of Tragic Hero Records. The partnership yielded the band’s 2011 full-length entitled "Survival Machines" and led the group on some national tours and gracing the pages of Alternative Press, Revolver, Rock Sound and more. After their partnership with Tragic Hero Records, the band gradually shifted away from their straight-up post-hardcore roots to incorporating more of an 80’s synth rock sound to accompany their darker, aggressive side. During that period, releasing two EPs and a host of singles, the band used the shift in genres to learn how to be better songwriters and grow musically. As members came and went, the core of the band has always stayed the same: the husband and wife duo of Angelika and Randy Roswell. While their musical path partly brought them to where they are now, the duo’s move from their lifelong home of Connecticut to North Carolina was the key catalyst to Brighter Than A Thousands Suns developing an interesting and new sonic approach. They used their heavier roots and incorporated the electronic rock elements that they had been known for more recently to create the sound that is heard on their latest EP entitled "The Way Out", which was released June 9th 2017. The duo is now working on a new EP that sees them return to their heavier roots and promises to be their heaviest release yet with a progressive metal-like diversity.

This episode highlights the bills that passed the House of Representatives in March, including a bill that allows toxic mountaintop removal waste to be dumped in streams, a bill that skips environmental reviews for new nuclear power plants, a bill that wasn't meant to become law but could screw over every government employee if it did, a bill that prevents the government from managing water rights, multiple bills to chip away at ObamaCare, and more. Bills Presented in This Episode Every one of these bills passed the House of Representatives in March, 2014 and is now awaiting action in the Senate. HR 311: “Farmers Undertake Environmental Land Stewardship Act” FUELS Act Sponsored by Rep. Eric “Rick” Crawford of Arkansas Relaxes the EPA rule that requires farms install spill prevention equipment if they store oil on their properties. This bill became law as part of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act, although with different numbers. The previous law said that a farm would need to install spill prevention equipment if they stored more than 1,320 gallons of oil on their property and would have to have that equipment inspected and certified by an engineer if they stored more than 10,000 gallons of oil. The new law says that the farm must get oil spill prevention equipment if they store more than 6,000 gallons of oil on their property and must have that equipment inspected and certified by an engineer if they have over 20,000 gallons of oil. H.R. 311 would have allowed farms to store up to 42,000 gallons of oil before they would have to have oil spill prevention equipment installed and certified by and engineer. The author of H.R. 311 was Rep. Rick Crawford of Arkansas; he has taken over $278,000 from the crop production and basic processing industry. H.R. 938: United States-Israel Strategic Partnership Act of 2014 Sponsored by Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida Would add Israel to a list of countries that gets approved faster for weapons shipments from the United States. Title II: Takes a $2 million a year grant program for renewable energy research and development and shifts its money towards natural gas. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's top contributor is the "Pro-Israel" lobby, which has given her over $893,000. The bill passed 410-1. Additional Information: Analysis: Israeli natural gas fields hold big promise for Noble Energy, Reuters, February 10, 2014. HR 1459: Ensuring Public Involvement in the Creation of National Monuments Act Sponsored by Rob Bishop of Utah Changes the rules for creating a National Monument. Requires environmental reviews of proposed National Monuments. The President can only create one National Monument per state per term; any additional National Monument declarations must be created by Congress. Rep. Rob Bishop’s campaign’s top contributing industry for the upcoming election is the oil and gas industry, which has given him $22,000. In total, the oil and gas industry has given Rep. Rob Bishop over $150,000. Another industry that benefits from this bill is real estate, Rep. Rob Bishop's fourth most generous contributing industry, which has given him over $100,000. This bill had the closest vote of the month, passing 222-201. HR 1814: Equitable Access to Health and Care Act (EACH Act) Sponsored by Aaron Schock of Illinois On Monday, June 30, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations can pick and choose what is included in their employee’s health coverage, so long as they say that that coverage is against the owners' religion. This ruling means that H.R. 1814 would have far wider implications than originally intended if it were to become law. HR 1814 let’s people get out of buying health insurance entirely if they say their “sincerely held religious beliefs” say they can’t get medical care. If someone went to the doctor that year voluntarily, the exemption would be nullified. There’s no penalty for lying. After the Supreme Court decision, if H.R. 1814 were to become law, corporations might be able to get out of providing for their employees by claiming that doing so is against their religion. The bill passed overwhelmingly in March, without a recorded vote, but it's future now looks bleak in the Senate. H.R. 2641: Responsibly and Professionally Invigorating Development Act (RAPID Act) Sponsored by Rep. Tom Marino of Pennsylvania Prohibits more than one environmental impact statement and one environmental assessment per project. Allows the company applying for a permit to conduct that environmental review. Lets the Federal government, at the company’s request, accept an environmental analysis that was prepared under State laws; the State laws have to be “substantially equivalent to NEPA” - not entirely, meaning that the Federal government can accept environmental studies that are not as stringent as NEPA. The Federal government can use the environmental analysis of a completely different but similar project in “geographical proximity” that was prepared within the last five years. “Geographical proximity” is not defined. All project reviews must be done at the same time. If other agencies are supposed to be involved in the environmental study process. they will have 30 days to respond to the lead agency or forever hold their peace. The other agencies won’t be allowed to participate or even submit comments if they didn’t respond in those first 30 days. Once a project schedule has been created, the lead agency is not allowed to respond to or include any NEPA document, comment, or new information that was submitted outside the time allotted for environmental analysis in the schedule. Sets time limits for environmental impact statements and public comment periods. If the lead agency doesn’t meet these deadlines, the permit is deemed approved. The permit can not be reversed by any agency or the courts. Bars judicial review of Federal permits, with a few narrow exceptions Representatives Quoted in This Segment (in order of appearance): Rep. Tom Marino of Pennsylvania Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas HR 2824: Preventing Government Waste and Protecting Coal Mining Jobs in America Sponsored by Bill Johnson of Ohio Forces the States to comply with a rule that allows the waste from mountaintop removal for coal mining operations to be dumped into rivers and streams. The rule was implemented in the last days of the Bush Administration and was recently thrown out by the courts because it didn't comply with the Endangered Species Act. Bill Johnson, the author of this gift to the coal industry, has taken over $200,000 from the mining industry. The bill passed 229-192. Representatives Quoted in This Segment (in order of appearance): Rep. Rush Holt of New Jersey Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia Rep. Bill Johnson of Ohio Rep. Alan Lowenthal of California HR 3189: Water Rights Protection Act Sponsored by Rep. Scott Tipton of Colorado This bill prohibits the Federal government from requiring companies operating on public land to turn over their water rights as a part of their lease renewals. The bill was written to settle a dispute over a Forest Service directive that would have required ski resorts operating on public land to turn over their water rights to the government in order to keep operating on public land. The Forest Service had already retracted that directive at the time this bill passed. The bill however, would prohibit the entire Department of Agriculture and the entire Department of the Interior from requiring the relinquishment of water rights as part of a permit to operate on public land, meaning the bill would effect far more than just ski resorts. The bill passed 238-174. No Republicans voted against it. Witnesses quoted from the House Natural Resources Committee's Subcommittee on Water and Power's hearing from October 10, 2013 (in order of appearance): Tony Willardson, Executive Director of the Western States Water Council David Corbin, Vice President of the Aspen Skiing Company Glenn Porzak, Attorney for the National Ski Areas Association Representatives Quoted in This Segment (in order of appearance): Rep. Grace Napolitano of California HR 3826: Electricity Security and Affordability Act Sponsored by Rep. Ed Whitfield of Kentucky The EPA will be not be allowed to enact any standard on fossil fuel powered electric utilities that regulates emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and a few other gases unless at least 6 utilities have already been meeting the standard for over a year; no results of demonstration projects can be included. Prohibits some specific proposed EPA rules from ever going into effect. Rules enacted by the EPA to set emission standards on fossil fuel utilities can’t go into effect until Congress passes a Federal law to set the enactment date. Ed Whitfield’s second highest contributor over the course of his career has been electric utilities; he’s taken over $614,000 from them. Electric utilities are his top contributor for the upcoming 2014 election; he’s taken over $157,000 and counting for this election alone. Ed Whitfield has also taken almost half a million over the course of his career from the oil and gas industry, over $100,000 of that for this upcoming election. The bill passed 229-183. HR 4015: SGR Repeal and Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Act of 2014 Sponsored by Michael Burgess of Texas This bill repeals the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) method of paying doctors who treat Medicare patients. The SGR rate ties the doctors' payments to the growth of the economy, which has short changed the doctors as medical costs have risen and the economy has remained flat. In it’s place, HR 4015 establishes what they call a “merit-based incentive payment system” that would come into effect on January 1, 2018. It creates a complicated system of scoring doctors based on their performance. Section 10, however, waives the tax penalty for not buying health insurance until 2019. This provision will kill the bill in the Senate. The bill passed 238-181. No Republicans voted against it. HR 4118: SIMPLE Fairness Act Sponsored by Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas Delays the tax penalty assessed if you fail to buy health insurance for one year. The Congressional Budget Office determined that the result will be that one million fewer Americans sign up for health insurance over the next few years, with half of those being poor people eligible for Federal subsidies. The government would save a few billion over the next ten years, therefore, by not giving health insurance to poor people. Rep. Lynn Jenkins top five contributing industries include both health professionals and insurance. She’s taken over $300,000 from both. Representatives Quoted in This Segment (in order of appearance): Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas Rep. Jim McDermott of Washington HR 4138: ENFORCE the Law Act of 2014 Sponsored by Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina Allows the House of Representatives, the Senate, or the Congress as a whole to to “bring civil action” against another part of the government if Congress doesn’t think that part of the government is “faithfully executing the law” Allows either part of Congress to sue over the actions of the Executive branch, any department or agency or “any other officer or employee” of the United States for formal or informal policies, practices or procedures. Before Congress can file these civil suits, Congress needs to pass a resolution. After the lawsuit is filed in a district court, the rules are that the lawsuit will be heard by a three-judge court and their decision can only be appealed directly to the Supreme Court. This bill was presented as a solution to the "problem" of an Executive Branch that refuses to enforce the law. This bill, however, is so broadly and carelessly written that it appears to allow Congress to sue any part of the government, individual employees included, if Congress determines they have not "faithfully executed the law." [caption id="attachment_1453" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Stars of the "President Obama Sucks" montage[/caption] The only clear winners if this bill became law are the lawyers who would get to argue these civil cases. The author of the bill, Rep. Trey Gowdy, is a lawyer. Trey Gowdy’s most generous contributing industry are lawyers and law firms, which have given him over $188,000 during his two terms in Congress. The bill passed 233-181, with the support of every, single Republican. It stands no chance in the Senate. Representatives Quoted in This Segment (in order of appearance): Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia Rep. Martha Roby of Alabama Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina Rep. Richard Nugent of Florida Rep. Ted Poe of Texas Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts Ignored Subpoena Rep. Chaka Fattah of Pennsylvania informed the House of Representatives that he is not going to comply with a subpoena. It's not clear exactly what the subpoena was for but he has been under Federal investigation for various improprieties since 2007. Additional Information: Pennsylvania Rep. Chaka Fattah vows to fight federal subpoena, Washington Times, March 13, 2014.
