The Beer & B-Movies Podcast returns with 1991's I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle, and four beers generously provided by my good friends at @threeweavers. This British comedy horror picture was picked by guest host Jon, and it's something else. A satanic cult is ambushed by some cross bow toting bikers, and in the ensuing melee a motorcycle is possessed by a vampiric demon. Say no more, I'm in. Three Weavers gave us Goldie lager, Cape Weather altbier, Dark & Jammy sour and Cambodian Cowboy Cambodian coffee inspired stout to pair with this one, and it's all a good time. Ryan Sentz is here this week to talk about how he and his brother bought back Funky Buddha, the Florida Brewery they sold to Constellation Brands six years ago. There's an interesting trend happening in beer these days. Small breweries that had sold to larger brewing companies are regaining their independence. The founders of Three Weavers in California re-purchased the brewery from Fireman Capital. 21st Amendment Brewery ended it's agreement with Brooklyn Brewery. And in the last month we've seen Appalachian Mountain Breweryfounders purchase the brewery back from Anheuser-Busch InBev and Florida's Funky Buddha going independent after a purchase from Constellation Brands.  Ryan Sentz, a co-founder of the brewery is my guest this week and he talks me through the early days of the brewery, the decision to sell in the first place and what life and business was like under Constellation. Constellation made a push into the craft space a few years ago with the splashy and billion dollar purchase of Ballast Point followed by Funky Buddha. The acquisition did not go as planned and after some devaluations Constellation sold Ballast Point to Kings and Convicts.  At that point, Sentz, who stayed on with Funky Buddha, knew that the brewery he founded could be next. He and his brother KC decided to make the move to re-acquire their brewery. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer. Friendly bets have become popular under the backdrop of the Super Bowl. Mayors of cities that host game-bound teams engage in banter designed to boost tourism, friends take on each other, and small businesses go toe to toe and show off team pride.  Breweries are no different. This year as the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California we welcome on three breweries engaged in such a bet.  The terms of the bet weren't firmed up before recording this show and slowly get hashed out, if not completely resolved by the end. Spoiler alert: there will be costumes.  On the show this week, joining via zoom from their respective breweries are Lynne Weaver, the founder and owner of Three Weavers, a brewery in Inglewood, that, as you'll hear, was briefly part of Canarchy, the brewery group recently purchased by Monster Beverages. She brought the company back to independence before that deal was closed.  She's joined by her brewery neighbor Teo Hunter, a co-founder of Crowns and Hops, a brewery that started on social media, gained a grass roots following and has been working hard to bring change to the beer industry through action. And representing Cincinnati is Matthew Steinke the director of sales at Rhinegeist Brewing, one of the state's larger breweries and a source of local beer pride. There are barbs and jabs thrown throughout this show, and they wind up steering the topics, and sharing experiences. We start off with the run up to the game, and Inglewood, which is hosting the game for the biggest night in American sports.  Editor's note: An earlier version of this episode misidentified the Ohio team playing in the Super Bowl. The game-bound team is the Cincinnati Bengals not the Cleveland Browns. The episode has been updated.  This Episode is sponsored by:Stomp StickersStomp Stickers is a proud member of the Brewers Association that produces a wide variety of printed brewery products such as beer labels, keg collars, coasters, beer boxes and much more. Today we sit with Tim Matthews of CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective (Oskar Blues, Cigar City, Deep Ellum, Perrin, Squatters, Three Weavers, and Wasatch) and Ira Leibtag, founder of Cholaca. Tim and Ira teamed up to successfully create a tasty, refreshing beer with the addition of cacao, and later, coconut. To kick things off, Tim shares the origin story of the pair's success. Sitting in a coffee shop, Tim noticed a sign for “Cholaca.” Curious, he sent an email to this mystery company, and an hour or so later, he received an email back. The rest is history, and Tim and Ira have been mastering cacao-infused beer ever since. In the show, we find out how, out of all the brewers who've tried this before, Tim and Ira managed to master it. The two touch on the process, cacao quality, and why they'll always use liquid coconut over nibs and disks. Later, Ira shares Cholaca's story and how his business is structured around rejuvenation. We also hear about liquid coconut as Tim and Ira talk about the effects it has on beers and their similarities and differences to Cholaca. Thirsty yet? Be sure to tune in with us to find out more! And what virtues are meant? What does "self governance" mean, and how does it fit uniquely into the American system? If people won't govern themselves, they'll be governed by somebody else?

Meanwhile, Modelo brand family shipments exceeded 125 million cases, as depletions rose 12 percent.Newlands called Modelo Especial “the leading growth engine in entire U.S. beer market,” adding that it is the “fastest growing brand in the on-premise” and the No. 1 selling beer in 7-Eleven stores.“It is the fastest growing major beer in the industry, accounting for almost 40 percent of total category growth,” he said, adding that the beer is now the top selling brand in California. In 2020 fiscal year, Constellation Brands will make its “biggest marketing investment” behind Modelo, with television advertising during live sporting events as well as the roll out of 32 oz. single-serve bottles.Heineken USA to Pay Record $2.5 Million Fine to Settle Trade Practice ViolationsThe Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) today announced the acceptance of a record $2.5 million offer in compromise from Heineken USA Incorporated for alleged trade practice violations outlined in the Federal Alcohol Administration (FAA) Act.According to the TTB, HUSA supplied alcohol retailers with its proprietary “BrewLock” draft systems at no cost between August 1, 2015, and March 26, 2019.In a press release, the TTB said the BrewLock systems were designed to only dispense products packaged in unique kegs used by HUSA, which subsequently induced retailers into purchasing offerings made by the global brewing entity.Additionally, the TTB accused Heineken’s U.S. importing arm of making “slotting fee payments” to retailers, and disguising those transactions as “permissible activities” such as consumer sampling experiences that never actually occurred.Brewers Association: Craft Growth Outpacing Overall Beer MarketThe BA, which released its 2018 craft industry growth statistics today, reported that 7,346 craft breweries operated in the U.S. in 2018. That’s up from 6,490 in 2017.Those 7,346 craft breweries produced a combined 25.9 million barrels of beer in 2018, up about 800,000 barrels from 2017, the BA said.Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson told members of the media during a teleconference. “We’re still seeing openings outpace closings by almost five-to-one,” Watson added that he expects both numbers to be revised upward next year as additional data is collected. In 2018, craft’s share of total beer dollars grew to 24.1 percent — to an estimated $27.6 billion — which Watson attributed to price inflation and the so-called “long tail” of small brewers commanding higher retail margins. Craft’s volume share of the overall U.S. beer also increased, to 13.2 percent last year, up from 12.6 percent in 2017.Watson also made a case for the smallest breweries finding the most success as they build their businesses through direct-to-consumer taproom sales. The BA estimates that the number of barrels sold directly to consumers via brewery taprooms grew by about 400,000 barrels, to 3.1 million barrels, in 2018 (up from 2.71 million barrels in 2017).Ninkasi Brewing Sells Majority Stake, Establishes National Platform to Acquire Other BreweriesOregon’s Ninkasi Brewing has sold a majority stake to Legacy Breweries Inc., an upstart venture led by former Yakima Chief CEO Don Bryant, that aims to acquire U.S. craft breweries.Similar to Canarchy – which owns Oskar Blues, Cigar City Brewing, Deep Ellum, Utah Brewers Cooperative, Perrin Brewing and Three Weavers – or Artisanal Brewing Ventures – which owns Victory Brewing, Southern Tier and Sixpoint Brewery – Legacy Breweries Inc. hopes to establish “collaborative partnerships” with craft breweries, according Ninkasi co-founder Nikos Ridge.Speaking to Brewbound, Ridge said he, along and co-founder Jamie Floyd and the company’s six investors, would “retain significant ownership” in the brewery.“Ninkasi sold a majority stake to Legacy Breweries in order to create a new platform that can leverage our resources in conjunction with those of the Legacy team,” he said.As those “brewing hubs” are established, the company would also look to acquire 10 to 15 smaller breweries in those geographies. Those companies would be able to access expanded production and packaging capabilities and have better access to raw materials such as hops, malt, and cans. Reformation Brewery prepares to 'Set Beer Free' at their second location Woodstock, GA is a fairly small community about 30 miles north of Atlanta.  It's been my home for 14 years and Reformation Brewery's home for nearly five.  When I moved here the "big" news/controversy in town was the opening of a new Super Wal-Mart.  Many of the city's elder residents didn't think we needed that kind of growth, the old Wal-Mart was just fine (it wasn't).  Now, the Downtown Woodstock area is lined with shops and restaurants, we have an amphitheater, a really nice trail system, and a brewery. As Reformation approaches that 5th anniversary, they're preparing to open their second location.  The 6,00-square-foot space is in the heart of Downtown Woodstock, close to all those fancy amenities I mentioned earlier.  A 5-barrel brewhouse will serve up a variety of small-batch beers to visitors.  The split plan will have various areas to relax and enjoy your brew, with one section set up to have a coffeehouse feel.  The brewery has partnered with Queenie's Southern Restaurant & Bar for food service and space will be available for private events. We sat down with Reformation Co-founder and Brewmaster Nick Downs this week to talk about the new digs, new beers, his faith and how that influences his business, and what he envisions for Reformation in the future.  We also share a story about Martin Luther and how he helped promote the use of hops in beer. Fresh back from Las Vegas, Brian drops some cigar info our way with his recap of new offerings discovered at the annual IPCPR cigar convention.  If you want more cigar info be sure to check out StogieReview.com where Brian waxes poetic about his love for burning dead leaves. In the news this week Three Weavers joins CANarchy, the Great American Beer Fest will be bigger than ever, and a punk album about craft beer.  We also welcome KCPX 1490 AM in Moab, UT as our newest radio affiliate.  Catch Beer Guys Radio on KCPX Canyon Crossing every Sunday at 3:00 PM Mountain time. Architect Christopher Mercier, AIA, left Frank Gehry’s Gehry Design Group in 2002 to establish his own architecture practice to create (fer) studio: Form, Environment Research. Their goal: to design contemporary spaces for creative clients, and to re-imagine and re-purpose existing structures, preserving their history and character while adapting them to modern use. In projects large and small, (fer) studio has designed upscale homes, hotel and hospitality projects, academic and industrial buildings; they even have plans for a large-scale community development called Cedros Market, near San Diego. Based in Inglewood, California, (fer) studio is at the epicenter of a new wave of urban renewal and restoration. The architecture firm is part of a surge of urban explorers (and intrepid investors) including many writers, artists, designers and entrepreneurs who have discovered the city in their search for affordable live/work spaces and brick-and-mortar retail storefronts. Mercier wants (fer) studio to be an active and vital part of the community’s transformation. “We want to be part of the re-development of Inglewood,” he says. (fer) studio has consulted with the Mayor of Inglewood and other city officials. “Part of the problem has been that it has no sense of place, no sense of identity,” Mercier explains. “We want to take this place, which has a lot of potential- -good scale and walkability, and bring in a transit hub. If people live, work and shop in a community, it is healthy.” (fer) studio is staffed by 14 architects, and divides its talents between residential, commercial and hospitality projects. (fer) studio has designed two well-known local restaurants, Father’s Office in Culver City and Connie & Ted’s in West Hollywood. They are the architects behind, the newly opened Officine Brera, an Italian restaurant in downtown Los Angeles’ arts district. Officine Brera is housed in a 1920s industrial building that once was home to the Gas Company. “Officine Brera is a mixture of adaptive reuse set against the influx of a new contemporary geometry that fuses together,” says Mercier. (fer) studio brings the same design philosophy to its residential projects as well, designing houses for clients in Venice Beach, Fullerton, California, La Canada Flintridge, Santa Monica, and Mulholland Estates in the Hollywood Hills. “It varies from year to year, but our practice usually breaks down to 20 to 30 percent residential, 20 to 30 percent hospitality, and the rest creative office spaces,“ says Mercier. Some of the “creative office spaces” they have designed include a new lobby and reception area for noted business woman Sunnie Kim’s Hana Financial in downtown Los Angeles, and Smashbox Studios in Culver City. Other recent or currently developing projects include The Hayden, a 30,000 square foot creative office adaptive reuse project in Culver City in the Hayden Tract. (fer) studio strives to combine environmental sensitivity and trend-setting vision in every project, no matter how large or small and develop a dialogue between interior and exterior space that morphs through the façade.” ABOUT (fer) studio (fer) studio began as a one-person firm, headed by Christopher Mercier A.I.A. in 2002. Mercier had worked with renowned architect Frank Gehry at his Santa Monica studio before striking out to establish his own practice. (fer) stands for Form, Environment and Research, the principles that describe the firm’s design philosophy. Firmly rooted in contemporary modernism, (fer) studio is dedicated to the idea that Form helps to shape the world, and can have a profound ability to positively impact contemporary experience. Through intensive research and the study of the site and environmental conditions, along with extensive client input, each project emerges as appropriate and unique. (fer) studio’s projects have included “ground up” construction, as well as the rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of a wide range of building types: residential, commercial, hospitality and academic. (fer) studio is passionate about urban design and development and the development of sustainable, livable cities. In 2005, Douglas Pierson joined (fer) studio (another Gehry alumni). In May 2016, Pierson and Mercier amicably ended their partnership when Pierson moved his family to North Carolina for personal reasons. Based in Inglewood, California (fer) studio is poised at the tipping point of the latest wave of urban renewal in Southern California. For decades, Inglewood, like Silverlake, Culver City and downtown Los Angeles, had been an underpriced and under-developed urban desert of empty storefronts and a deserted main street. In recent years, Inglewood has been discovered by urban explorers (and intrepid investors): writers, artists and entrepreneurs have arrived in search of affordable live/work spaces and retail storefronts. Mercier and Pierson have participated in various local design projects, including the “Inglewood Living City,” an urban design project (fer) studio developed for the city, as well as a similar project proposal the firm has submitted to Solano Beach called “Cedros Market.” In 2005, (fer) studio submitted a letter to the City of Inglewood’s Planning Department suggesting the city develop a Live/Work Zoning Ordinance to assist the artists relocating to the area. In 2014 (fer) studio began consulting with the city on a regular basis to see the ordinance through City Council’s approval in 2015. One of (fer) studio’s local clients was the Three Weavers’ Brewing Company, an artisan brewery and tasting room that opened in 2013. “It was a small project for Doug (Pierson) and I,” Mercier says modestly. “We were basically paid in beer. Three Weavers is a great local hangout and a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. We want to be part of the redevelopment of Inglewood, and we want (fer) studio to be the ‘go-to’ firm for the community.” Today, (fer) studio is a 14 person firm, dividing its time between various residential, hospitality and commercial projects. Completed restaurant projects on Mercier and Pierson’s roster include the popular Father’s Office in Culver City, Connie & Ted’s in West Hollywood and the newly opened Officine Brera in downtown Los Angeles. All three projects took vital clues from the local urban environment, and intense owner involvement informed the design strategies that made each space unique. For Officine Brera, located in the downtown Los Angeles Arts District, (fer) studio reimagined the existing space--a 1920s industrial building and a masonry and steel warehouse that once housed the Los Angeles Gas Company as an elegant, Northern Italian restaurant while preserving the industrial character of the 8,000 square foot building using reclaimed wood, concrete and exposed steel. Other recent or currently developing projects include The Hayden, a 30,000 square foot creative office adaptive reuse project in Culver City in the Hayden Tract. Mercier and Pierson also designed a 5,000 square foot family home in Fullerton, California, a 4,500 square foot single-family residence in Santa Monica, California, and a renovated lobby/reception area for Hana Financial in a downtown Los Angeles high-rise. (fer) studio recently completed Phase I of the photo studio and office space for Smashbox Studios in Culver City, and a reuse project adapting an existing structure into the Hayden, a creative office complex in Culver City. (fer) studio’s project mix varies from year to year, but they always strive to achieve a balance of residential, commercial and hospitality projects. “This encourages fresh thinking and helps foster over-lapping ideas between building types that may not happen otherwise,” says Mercier. The architects feel this brings vibrancy to their work. Today (fer) studio is involved in a variety of projects on a wide variety of scales: from small, sustainable residential spaces to large-scale urban centers. The firm is committed to a contemporary vision of design that continues to expand and evolve with each new project. Mercier brings a unique sensibility and intuition along with years of experience to every commission. (fer) studio is comprised of a diverse collection of young architects, artists, and designers assembled around a design approach utilizing both computer-generated models and hand-built physical modeling to provide a more complex and complete understanding of each project. (fer) studio is a young, eager and contemporary design-focused firm. After fifteen years, it continues to grow, taking on more complex challenges. The firm continues to expand its abilities and create unique contemporary structures that will engage interesting dialogue within the larger architectural community. *Please note, in June 2016, due to unforeseen familial obligations, Douglas Pierson will be moving his family to North Carolina. After years of a successful design collaboration, Mercier and Pierson amicably have ended their partnership. It is important to list all credit to ‘(fer) studio’ while keeping in mind that Christopher Mercier is now sole principal. *form- environment- research http://ferstudio.com/studio/
