Welcome to Real Food Recovery, a podcast created by two lifelong processed food addicts with over 100 years of addiction (and recovery) between them. Paige Alexander and Jamie Morgan Reno use their Real Food Recovery podcast and social media channels to share their struggles, lessons learned, tools, tips, and resources that freed them from decades of food addiction, obsession, and loss. Today we have the pleasure of chatting with Tim Kaufman, of Fat Man Rants. Tim was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) in his early twenties. He was in chronic pain most of his life. By the time he had reached the age of 37 he was addicted to Fentanyl, alcohol, and fast food. At over 400 pounds he was unable to perform simple daily tasks. He had many chronic health issues and was almost immobile. He had lost his interest in life and had almost given up.Tim started a journey to regain his health. He started to change one small thing at a time. He is now an athlete who thrives on a plant-based whole-food lifestyle and leads a healthy, happy, productive, and very active life that is free of all medications he was once on. His passion is to spread the message that anyone can transition to a healthy, active lifestyle and dramatically change their life regardless of their current situation or size. Imagine a life where you are trapped…imprisoned…in a cycle of addiction to alcohol, fentanyl, and food. Now imagine escaping that prison for a life that is far better than you can ever imagine. This is the story of today's guest, Tim Kaufman. At just 38 years old, Kaufman's doctor essentially left him for dead. His weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides were through the roof, and his self-esteem and self-worth were…well…practically six feet under. He was ready to give up on himself, his family, and his life. That is, until one day, he started making the smallest of changes. For him, it was getting out of his chair two times. That was it. One small change at a time. This eventually led to a little research and he found Forks Over Knives, The Engine 2 Kitchen Rescue, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead… documentaries he credits with changing his life and his diet to a whole foods plant-based diet. Today, he is an accomplished athlete training for an IRONMAN triathlon and he just released his memoir, Escape-Breaking Free From A Self-Made Prison. Tim Kaufman was a triple addict. Alcohol and drug abuse combined with binge eating nearly claimed his life.   Of the three deadly vices, it was food that had its hooks in him the deepest. It is an addiction more powerful than the fentanyl he was abusing. Ditto for what was in the bottomless liquor bottles he consumed each night.   Tim was beaten raw by life until he fought back and clawed his way out of a self-made prison. His journey began at rock bottom, and he has soared to new heights as a leader in the plant-based world thanks to his Fat Man Rants.   In this episode, Tim joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to talk about the personal hell he created for himself and how he was able to overcome his demons.   The two recovering food addicts discuss their take of "cheat days" and why they are the downfall of good health. Tim Kaufman fell victim to all of the classic American poor lifestyle choices. He ate primarily processed food – and large quantities of it.  After surgery related to a crippling disease called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, doctors prescribed painkillers and soon he was hooked on them. Like most addicts, he connived ways to get more of them and even more powerful narcotics, like fentanyl. He smoked, he chewed, and he drank staggering amounts of vodka. Tim was raised in a strait-laced Christian family in a quiet, rural town, demonstrating how his pitfalls don't discriminate based on social standing. Realizing he would soon be in a coffin, 400-pound Tim decided it was time to get bariatric surgery, only for his doctor to tell him that his body's catastrophically poor health wouldn't allow for him to have it, which sunk him into further despair. Four simple words from his terminally-ill mother-in-law shook Tim into deciding that he needed to find a way to live. Tim knew David and like the latter's book, Out There, Tim has just released his book, Escape: Breaking Free From a Self-Made Prison, in which he similarly has a remarkable transformation. Tim also adopts a plant-based diet and becomes a clean and sober Ironman triathlete who discovers that gratitude could change his outlook in life and help him become the husband and father his family deserves, and an inspirational and motivational human. Like many in his shoes, Tim's tribulations have helped him learn some fantastic perspectives, which he shares in his book, which is now available on Amazon. How does a 400-pound cripple living in constant pain become an avid mountain climber and a triathlete? Here to tell his story and inspire everyone that change is possible is Tim Kaufman. Tim was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) in his early twenties and lived in chronic pain most of his life. By the time he was 37, he was addicted to Fentanyl, alcohol, and fast food. Weighing over 400 pounds, Tim could not perform simple daily tasks and was almost immobile. He had lost his interest in life and had almost given up. Losing two people close to their hearts to deadly diseases, Tim's wife feared that he would be the next. That was the turning point for Tim.  He started a journey to regain his health, changing one small thing at a time. As a result, Tim is now an athlete who thrives on a plant-based whole food lifestyle and leads a healthy, happy, and active life free of all medications he was once on. Surviving A Heart Attack and Being Flatlined with Dave Willits – PTP 251

Plant Trainers Podcast - Plant Based Nutrition & Fitness

In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk to Dave Willits known as the man who survived a heart attack after being flatlined. Dave seemed like a healthy, sporty guy on the outside, but little did he know that he would have to be shocked 11 times to be brought back to life. As you will hear during the interview, Dave’s dietary lifestyle, with an added love for pizza, was a contributing factor to this horrible event. We have a special place in our hearts (no pun intended) for this episode. It’s just not sexy. What do we mean by that? Well, Dave didn’t have a food addiction. He didn’t have 100+ pounds to lose. He didn’t have a drug addiction. We would never try to take away from the stories of others, including our guests and friends who have come so far and changed so much. But the truth is, if you can see it on the outside, you know you need to make a change on the inside and these stories are easy to relate to by others in similar physical conditions. But with Dave, a lot like Adam, there were no major outward red flags screaming change your life now, before it’s too late. If you look a certain way in the mirror, it’s easy to think that you are invincible and these devastating events only happen to other people, and not you. Over 12 years ago we lost a good friend to a heart attack…and on the outside, he was one of the last people of our group of friends who you would think would go off to play floor hockey and never return home again. We want to help others make those changes before it’s too late even if they are not obese, on other medications or suffering from serious diseases. No one deserves to go through what Dave did especially when it is preventable. Dave Willits is a simple and humble guy. He is out there trying to help others find the plant-based lifestyle. Today he is a single dad of a 22-year-old son, 13-year-old daughter. He’s been the production manager for an automotive manufacturer for 20 years. Prior to that, he was in the pizza business for about 25 years, which may have been a big contributor to the massive heart attack that changed his life forever. You don’t want to miss this story.   In this episode we discuss: Life before flatlining Looking good on the outside The heart attack His health today Dr. Esselstyn Seeing results Committing to plant-based Actionable tips starting out plant-based Favorite meals Message for the masses   Links to things we mentioned: Thank you to our sponsor,  – “Let Your Food Be Your Remedy” Dave Willits – A Forefather of Plant-Based Nutrition, Dr. Caldwell Essylstyn – Plant-Based Nutrition Support Group –  The Inspiring & Motivating Josh LaJaunie – Weight Loss & Ehlers Danlos Syndrome with Tim Kaufman –   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Millie Pearson Mary Lou Fusi Carmen Fanous Emily Iaconelli Spanish Armada Michele Olender Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our Plant Trainers Facebook Lives!   We hope you enjoyed this podcast! In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk to Heather Kaufman about how support was really the ultimate reason for success when her and her husband, Tim, went through various transitions from the Standard American Diet to Whole Food Plant-Based, no sugar, no salt, no oil. As you will hear in this episode, there were plenty of reasons for Heather to change her diet and lifestyle, but history predicted that diets were just a fad in the Kaufman household. That is why she dug deep and made a personal connection and the memory of her mother created an urgency to adopt this new lifestyle. But at the end of the day, the respect and support she gave Tim and he gave her allowed them to make a change. Which in turn has become sustainable and really creates a difference in their quality of life. Heather Kaufman had been dabbling with a plant-based way of eating when a doctor discovered that she had a uterine fibroid that was 14 centimeters long. She then went 100 percent plant-based, ditched the salt, oil, and sugar and started exercising. As a result of Heather’s lifestyle changes she is healthy, active, and lives life to its fullest. As a side effect of getting healthy, she has shed 80 pounds and is a competitive runner. Heather had never run a full mile until a few short years ago and is now an ultramarathoner. She is passionate about spreading the message that health comes from your plate and not a number on the scale.   In this episode we discuss: Life before Plant Based Finding a Plant Based lifestyle The transitions Fibroids Timbits Favourite meals Emotional support of spouses Finding support if you are in your own Races, training and Operation Christmas selfie Actionable tips to start with today to give up the sugar, salt and animal products?   Links to things we mentioned: Thank you to today’s sponsor –> – use “PlantTrainers” at checkout for 15% off Become one of our Patrons & get our Heather Kaufman – , The Rantings Of A Former Fat Man with Tim Kaufman –   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick Mary Lou Fusi Carmen Fanous Emily Iaconelli Spanish Armada Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our Plant Trainers Facebook Lives!   We hope you enjoyed this podcast! Hi Path Menders, This week on The Mended Paths Podcast I am speaking with Mr. Justin Lacy. There was a time when Justin was forced to use crutches to move his 500 Lb body around - if he could move at all. He suffered with pain and disease every day. Then his mom had a stroke. He saw the sadness and pain of not only his mom, but all those family and friends who stood around her bedside. Despite all the hurt and issues he was facing personally, it was his overwhelming desire not to inflict needless suffering on his family, who would inevitably be standing at his bedside, that inspired him to mend his path. Justin then made a vow, a scared self-promise, to seek out how to be as healthy as possible. This promise has driven him and his actions ever since. Today, Justin shares his story of his amazing journey so far, a journey that isn't over, a journey in which he has lost over 280 Lbs but has gained so much more. It is a journey he will continue for the rest of his life - a never ending goal of seeking optimal health! In today’s show we discuss (show notes): - Some background: A lifetime of trying to lose weight, medical issues and an eye opener (1:35), - A "scared self-promise" (5:14), - Past efforts to lose weight (5:48), - A change in objective and a seeking a different approach (8:17), - Searching for smoothie recipes and found a community (13:54), - A "crazy" video that changed it all (15:05), - A water fast (17:45), - The first couple of months being plant based; it wasn't super clean (18:29), - The first weigh-in (10-11 months into plant based) (22:44), - On physical activity (24:13), - Never followed any specific doctors meal plan; his own "plan" around October 2015 (24:51), - Making an effort to retrain his taste buds (28:44), - Weighing in just to be amazed (32:58), - Adding exercise (35:48), - Medical issues resolved (42:04), - If there's something you want to do, just do it; make it happen no matter what it takes (43:34), and, - His advice for Path Menders (49:51). Let’s face it, losing weight is tough. Making any kind of drastic lifestyle change can seem daunting and difficult. But the alternative is often scarier. Tim Kaufman was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a condition characterized by hyper mobile joints. His joints were so loose they would simply pop out of their sockets. After a failed operation to fix the issue, Tim became addicted to prescription pain medication. He was also addicted to food. Moving less and less, eating more and more, the weight piled on. He lost his lust for life, he was depressed, and used food and prescription drugs as an escape. After two close relatives passed away from cancer, Tim knew he had to do something. He applied for bariatric surgery. But his health was so bad that his doctor refused to sign it off. He had to take a different approach. He began making small changes. Cutting out red meat. Choosing lower-fat cheeses. Then one day, he watched Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. Before the credits rolled, he’d ordered a juicer. A 30 day juice fast later, Tim was well and truly on his way towards better health. But it was Forks over Knives that really gave him a new lease of life. From being unable to get up from his chair, Tim has gone on to climb mountains, complete 100-mile bike rides, run a marathon. He’s even training for Iron Man. Hello Path Menders, This week I have the pleasure of bringing you the inspirational story of Tim Kaufman. Due to a genetic disorder, Tim was told by his doctors to "keep his body quiet." Bad choices and pain compounded his condition and left him sitting at 400 Lbs. with a prescription drug addiction. But after facing tragedy in his own life, the thought of causing his wife more pain - from his death or worsening disability - set him on a path of self-discovery. Tim embraced a philosophy of Kaizen (continuous improvement) to mend his path. Starting with the simple act of getting out of his chair twice instead of once, or walking up four steps before resting instead of three, Tim inched forward toward a healthier way of life with the motto, "Do a little more today than yesterday." Today Tim is a happy, active fellow, who loves life and helping others reclaim their health. Tim runs the blog Fatmanrants as well as a Facebook page (both worth checking out) and is planning on writing a book about his journey. You may need a few tissues for this one. When Tim Kaufman was in his late 30s, he weighed about 400 pounds, struggled with addictions to pain killers, and figured this was how his life was gonna be from now on. After all, he had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a genetic disease that messes with connective tissue and left his knees essentially useless.
