Hi Path Menders, This week on The Mended Paths Podcast I am speaking with Mr. Justin Lacy. He saw the sadness and pain of not only his mom, but all those family and friends who stood around her bedside. Despite all the hurt and issues he was facing personally, it was his overwhelming desire not to inflict needless suffering on his family, who would inevitably be standing at his bedside, that inspired him to mend his path. Justin then made a vow, a scared self-promise, to seek out how to be as healthy as possible. This promise has driven him and his actions ever since. Today, Justin shares his story of his amazing journey so far, a journey that isn't over, a journey in which he has lost over 280 Lbs but has gained so much more. Hi Path Menders, Thanks for visiting today. This week on the Mended Paths Podcast I'm speaking with Ms. Joyce Hale. Joyce has not had an easy life. She has struggled with illness, literally, from the day she was born. With the ambiguous diagnosis of "sick child" from an early age, she suffered all kinds of maladies. It took doctors 28 years before they diagnosed her with Lupus. 28 years with a big question mark about why she was always facing some sort of sickness. Her medical problems continued to progress, with limited, if any, relief from medications, until she came to, and adopted, a plant based diet. Today, Joyce shares her very emotional story and the long journey she has had. We touch on how she is now called "the canary in the coal mine" in regards to the impact of the wrong "foods" and so much more. Joyce is especially grateful to the Esselstyn family for the information, resources, and push they gave her so she was able to take her recovery to the next level and finally start skipping days of her medication. This was a meeting that literally changed her life. In today’s show we discuss (show notes): - Medical issues from the day she was born (1:59), - It can be years or decades before a lupus patient is diagnosed - for Joyce it was 28 years (6:51), - Hard to connect the dots and make a diagnosis as each flare can present different symptoms (8:57), - Some trouble with prescribing medications for lupus flares (11:20), - Daily life: Pushing hard on a good day (15:05), - Constant disease progression; overwhelming darkness (19:24), - Lupus can attack and deteriorate your bones (20:57), - Doctors advice to stop bone deterioration (24:07), - Increasing seizures lead to medical leave and the the adoption of the Mediterranean diet; medications seemed to finally start to work somewhat (27:17), - The Mediterranean diet only provided some relief for 8 months before the frequency of seizures increased again (29:37), - Running her own little experiment / resisting the suggestion of plant based (32:19), - The power of plants is revealed (35:55), - A 30 day trial...? (38:45), - You think it's radical, you think it's extreme (43:36), - It's tough to see other patients struggling - you want to shout from the rooftops! (46:02), - Reductions in medications (47:09), - "A canary in the coal mine" (48:59), - A lot fewer doctor visits and many more good days (53:45), and, - Her advice for Path Menders - take control of your body; take control of your health (57:06). E8 - Dr. Ruth Heidrich - Chewing up Cancer Spitting Out Iron

Hello Path Menders, Some of you may be familiar with the amazing Dr. Ruth Heidrich, PH.D as she was featured in the most excellent documentary "Forks Over Knives." She was 47 when, despite being a marathoner and daily runner for 14 years with what she considered a "healthy" diet, she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that had spread to her lung and bones. Luckily, she was fortunate to connect with Dr. John McDougall who was running a study on the effects of diet on breast cancer. Within weeks she was seeing amazing results from her new low fat vegan diet. Beating such a terrible diagnosis is high achievement enough. But for Dr. Ruth, this was just the beginning. She wanted to prove that this diet - this lifestyle - was so powerful, not only would she chew up and cure her cancer, she would spit our Iron. While still recovering from her mastectomy, she began training and went on to finish 6 Ironman Triathlons. At the time it was considered possible to only do one of these per year, due to the recovery time needed from such a strenuous competition. Dr. Ruth did 4 in the first year of competing! In addition to racing, Dr. Ruth has her PH.D. in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology and has written 4 books so far: "A Race for Life," "Lifelong Running," "Senior Fitness," and, the e-book "The CHEF Cook/Rawbook." She answers questions through her website ruthheidrich.com and is co-host of a weekly talk show in her native Hawaii. She can also be found on her Facebook page. In this show we discuss (show notes): • Background - from "healthy" marathon runner to cancer diagnosis (01:08) • Joining Dr. John McDougall's Breast Cancer & Diet Research Study (7:51) • How changing her diet was received by others (11:50) • (Almost) Nothing can stop her from running (12:59) • Post-surgery downtime brings opportunities (14:59) • Chewing up cancer and spitting out iron (17:49) • But who only wants to do one Ironman? (21:00) • Becoming an author of four books (so far) (25:29) • Prioritizing exercise (33:47) • On sexual health (35:28) • On aging (36:33) • On moderation (38:46) • "You can't be a prophet in your own hometown" (40:19) • A 5K warm up and bias in reporting (43:59) • Continued relationship with Dr. McDougall (47:33) If you’ve enjoyed the show, please share on your favorite social media and rate on the iTunes and Stitcher! Hello Path Menders, This week I have the pleasure of bringing you the inspirational story of Tim Kaufman. Due to a genetic disorder, Tim was told by his doctors to "keep his body quiet." Bad choices and pain compounded his condition and left him sitting at 400 Lbs. with a prescription drug addiction. But after facing tragedy in his own life, the thought of causing his wife more pain - from his death or worsening disability - set him on a path of self-discovery. Tim embraced a philosophy of Kaizen (continuous improvement) to mend his path. Starting with the simple act of getting out of his chair twice instead of once, or walking up four steps before resting instead of three, Tim inched forward toward a healthier way of life with the motto, "Do a little more today than yesterday." Today Tim is a happy, active fellow, who loves life and helping others reclaim their health. Tim runs the blog Fatmanrants as well as a Facebook page (both worth checking out) and is planning on writing a book about his journey. You may need a few tissues for this one.
