Bec Timmis left high school and studied animation at Griffith University's Queensland College of Art before branching out into design and illustration.  At the same time, she enrolled in a professional children's writing course, where she wrote her first award-winning short story. Mike Timmis was born in Detroit, Michigan, where he has had a distinguished career as both an attorney and businessman. He earned his undergraduate degree from Wayne State University and has received honorary doctorates from the University of Detroit Mercy, and Ave Maria University. Mike serves as chairman of Prison Fellowship International, and is on the board of Alpha International. He and his wife, Nancy, minister to the poor in the Third World and have developed self-help projects in Africa, and Central and South America. They are also very active in addressing the educational needs of children in Detroit. Relationships are the cornerstone of human health. Last week, the church planting network, Acts 29, fired its CEO, Steve Timmis, for allegations of abuse and bullying. But now, there's evidence that Acts 29 President, Matt Chandler, knew about Timmis' abuse five years ago. But instead of dealing with it, he and the board fired the whistleblowers! In this episode of The Roys Report, Julie Roys talks about what happened at Acts 29 with Stephen McAlpine, an Australian pastor and popular blogger who helped bring Timmis' alleged abuse to light.

Last week, CT published an investigative report on allegations of spiritual abuse by Steve Timmis, who previously served as the CEO of the church planting ministry Acts 29. But long before assuming the leadership in 2014, Timmis was known for his model of intensive gospel community developed at his 120-person church in England known as The Crowded House and for his books like Total Church: A Radical Reshaping around Gospel and Community. But not everyone who was part of Timmis’s close-knit church community felt warmly toward the church leader. According to our report:  Fifteen people who served under Timmis described to Christianity Today a pattern of spiritual abuse through bullying and intimidation, overbearing demands in the name of mission and discipline, rejection of critical feedback, and an expectation of unconditional loyalty. People in these environments aren’t always aware they’re being abused, says Lisa Oakley, the co-author of Escaping the Maze of Spiritual Abuse: Creating Healthy Christian Cultures. “Psychological abuse is not a one-off. It's usually a series of incidents which when told by themselves can seem minimal,” said Oakley, now an assistant professor for the developmental psychology team at the University of Chester. “It's when you put that story together that you actually start to see this pattern of control.” Oakley joined digital media producer Morgan Lee and editorial director Ted Olsen to discuss what people should do if they think they are being spiritually abused, how spiritual abuse can also affect pastors, and why it may be hard for people in close-knit communities to realize the unhealthy state of their church’s leadership. On the 14th of June 2010 Leigh Timmis left Derby, UK.  This was the beginning of a circumnavigation of the world he thought would take around 3 years.  In late April 2017, after 7 years in which he covered more than 40000 miles, he came home. Will chats to this amazing traveler about his epic journey in which he endured raging storms at sea, freezing mountain passes, the sweltering outback and a run in with the Tibetan police.  Leigh saw some of the world's most amazing sights and made friends and encountered people and cultures who would change his life forever.

In the summer of 2010, Leigh Timmis pedaled away from his home in England to begin an around the world cycling adventure. Somewhere along the way he realized that cycling every painstaking and dangerous mile of the journey is not as important as enjoying it. Leigh cycled in support of the Derbyshire Children's Holiday Centre, a charity that provides week-long holidays to children in need.
