Economist and author Art Carden is certainly no stranger to the Libertarian Christian Podcast, with this episode marking his seventh appearance on the show. This time, he joins Doug Stuart to discuss his latest book, Strangers With Candy: Observations from the Ordinary Business of Life, in which Art highlights a simple economic fact: buying candy from strangers is commonplace in any modern economy. Before diving into the book, Art and Doug spend some time discussing economics more broadly. Art walks us through the story of how he first became interested in economics, going on to explain and clarify a number of misconceptions surrounding the discipline. Drawing from his book, Art suggests that economists are to blame for many of these misconceptions, as they often do a bad job explaining the economics of how the world works. In Strangers With Candy, Art intends to rectify this issue, offering an accessible and easily digestible analysis of how economics impacts and shapes our day-to-day lives. This episode gives listeners a taste of Art's analysis, as well as discussion on a variety of related and intriguing topics, such as municipal development policy, economic growth vs economic progress, and Art's argument for why business is a public service. If you're interested in anything mentioned above, tune in now! Art Carden is a professor of economics at Samford University's Brock School of Business. He has worked with and contributed to a number of other organizations, including the American Institute for Economic Research, the Institute for Faith, Work, and Economics, the Beacon Center of Tennessee, the Independent Institute, and the Foundation for Economic Education. We bring the 2nd Unit back to dip our toes into Development Hell once again...kind of! As a pseudo-sequel of our Superman Lives episodes, we dig into the history of what was supposed to be Justice League: Mortal, the short-lived but fascinating first attempt at the superhero team-up. Directed by George Miller, written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney, and starring a surprisingly young cast including Armie Hammer, Common, and Jay Baruchel, this goofy comic-book-accurate project met insurmountable obstacles on the way to production. We break down the full cast and story of this project (thanks in large part to cast interviews, articles from Collider, and the great work of the Canceled Movie Report podcast), go over a brief history of the Justice League, and explore the biggest reasons for this film's collapse: the Australian government and the 2007-2008 Writers' Guild of America strike. We marvel at the gambit of casting such young actors for such iconic adult roles, give a brief lesson on rabies symptoms, hypothesize future advancements in villainous tracking technology, have a fun discussion on currency conversion rates and tax credits, subject you to some truly awful Batman voices, remind you that Jack is still trying to track down a VHS copy of Nukie to torture Joe with, bring awareness to the pitfalls of bad acronyms/initialisms, Jack plugs his latest creative project, and we ask a question we've been wondering for some time: do the members of the Justice League all share a tailor? Suit up, settle into the Brother Eye console, and enjoy the show. I Guess I'll Do It with Pat House

One of my first friends in comedy, Chip Chantry, joins me on this episode. Chip and I have a lot of similarities between our childhoods, comedy interests, and our careers. We chat about his very first time doing stand-up (opening for his brother's band), our early days in the Philly scene, how Philly comedy has evolved and we each work on a new bit. We also talk about the television masterpiece, Strangers With Candy, because half of our conversations are about that show anyways. Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos, and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura, and Dan Cummins. He recorded his first album Biggest Thing in 2013, and his latest album Heard Enough Yesterday, hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. Both can be heard on iTunes, Amazon, and Pandora.Chip Chantry is a stand-up comedian and television writer. He has written for Crazy Talk, a comedy/talk series for NBC Universal and the syndicated series Whacked Out Sports. He most recently wrote on the NatGeo series Howie Mandel's Animals Doing Things. Chip was the winner of 2013's Philly's Phunniest Contest at Helium Comedy Club, where he was a regular performer. Chip also won the “Funniest Comedian” award in Philadelphia's annual Comedy Awards in both 2012 and 2014 and was named Best Comedian 2018 by Philadelphia Magazine. Chip is a recurring guest on the Doug Loves Movies and Todd Glass Show Podcasts.Formerly a 4th-grade teacher, Chip left the classroom to pursue comedy and writing. He has opened for national headliners such as Dave Chappelle, Bob Saget, and Tig Notaro. In 2012, he released his first live comedy album, ACROSS FROM THE ADONIS. His second album, SWINGERS PARTY, was released in March 2019, where it spent time at #1 on the iTunes comedy charts and is currently in rotation on SiriusXM. Chip has written and performed in a number of live and video sketches, including “Deck the Hall and Oates” which VH1.com called “one of the best parodies of the year” in 2011. He also wrote and produced the monthly late night style talk shows FACE TIME w/ CHIP CHANTRY, and GOOD EVENING w/ CHIP CHANTRY at Helium Comedy Club, as well as the monthly comedy-variety program, CHIP CHANTRY'S ONE‐MAN SHOW (w/ special guests!), at the Philly Improv Theater. He also hosted and co-produced LECTURE HALL, an educational comedy variety show, with a middle-school assembly format. Most recently, he has partnered with his brother Adam, a planetarium director, to produce The Funny Thing About the Sky, a comedic, multi-media astronomy presentation. Jackie Tohn steps Behind The Rope. Best known for her breakout performance as Melanie “Melrose” Rosen on Netflix’s award winning, critically acclaimed masterpiece “Glow”, Jackie stops by to share it all. Originally from Long Island, NY, Jackie moved to LA at 18 to follow her dreams of becoming an actress. Early in her career Jackie appeared on many of our favorite shows such as “The Sopranos”, “Veronica Mars”, “Strangers With Candy”, not the least of which was “The Nanny”, in which she played a young Fran Drescher. Turns out Kristen Bell is a close friend and they actually have an animated series coming to Amazon in the very near future! There was also that one time she lived with Jessica Biel and her parents in Calabasas. So much to kvell about, so little time. Jackie opens up about those experiences and chats about some of her comedic and thespian role models that inspired her to break into the business of acting. To our delight, Joan Rivers and Howard Stern are two of these inspirations and Jackie has even been involved in The Howard Stern show in the past, which she is more than happy to discuss. Jackie also chats about her singing abilities, those abilities which led her to the semi finals on “American Idol” and Bravo’s very own “Platinum Hit” (Kara DioGuardi, we see you!). Jackie shares stories from behind the scenes on Glow, chats about the disappointment when Season 4 was indefinitely shelved due to lockdown and hints at what the future holds for the un-filmed season and possible Glow movie (what a wish!). Jackie is now the host of Netflix’s “Best Leftovers Ever”, we delve deep into this brilliant show, her own food preferences and culinary abilities with leftovers and what being a host of her own Netflix show means to her. @jackietohn@behindvelvetrope@davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeBrought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetropeMerch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jodi Collins | Manager, Casting Director, Consultant, Coachhttps://jodicollins.wordpress.com/JODI COLLINS founded the JLC Entertainment Group, a hyphenate boutique producing and management company in 2014 after her careers as; a casting director, ad agency creative, talent scout, booker, talent coach, and sometimes dramaturg made it apparent that it was time to merge those abilities into one singular entity.Jodi cast network shows in the soft scripted, sketch and dramedy spaces for networks ABC, CBS, FX, Showtime, HBO, Adult Swim, and Viacom’s many networks including Comedy Central, etc. Within this, Collins has cast prominent tv shows with favorites including Strangers With Candy, The Big Gay Sketch Show, Emmy award winning Chris Rock Show and Viva Variety with ongoing casting for Patriot Acts With Hassan Minaj. She continues developing comedy and hyphenate talent successfully with clients working in network, cable, digital tv and live performances.Throughout her career Jodi was particularly drawn to storytelling, improv, dramedy and stand up comedy and was sought after by the big 4 talent agencies for the dl on these up and comers still under the radar. Jodi's studies as an NYU/BFA Tisch graduate trained a keen eye that she then took left of center. That has and continues to be her signature having championed talent Kirsten Schall, Zack Galafanakis, Michelle Buteau, Nick Kroll, Brett Gelman, etc. and discovering Kate McKinnon in their beginnings. Jodi Collins was profiled in the New York Times, on Access Hollywood, was featured as a panelist for Nick At Nite’s America’s Funniest Moms and served as a Just For Laughs comedy festival judge for 2 years and as an HBO US Comedy Arts Festival judge for 4 years. The Cult of Matt and Mark Archive01

This week we review the sketch comedy adaptation Strangers with Candy. A lukewarm response from both Matt and Mark, Matt tries to dissect why 30 minute sketch comedy shows tend to limp into mediocre 90 minute films. It could be that while Amy Sedaris's Jerri Blank is funny for a 10 minute block, stretching this unlikable character to film length becomes challenging. Anyway, Mark has declared this the summer of 'funny', so let this be the vanguard.Download: 159 Strangers with Candy

Amanda Sitko is a TV Writer (BROCKMIRE) and a veteran performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater. She credits STRANGERS WITH CANDY as her major comedy influence and prefers those people who've seen it/loved it to those who haven't. The discussion opens up to all things High School... including growing up in Siberia, where comedy was almost as rare as women behind the wheel. CW: we also discuss the use of derogatory terms in Film and TV, as well as the phenomenon aptly coined by another great comedian as "sexy autism." Then, we recommend Andy Samberg's comedy vehicle HOT ROD, the 2002 classic Kung Pow! Enter The Fist and filing for bankruptcy (that is, if you fit the bill). Fatty Arbuckle was a star. He could act. He could sing. He could make an audience roar with laughter. By the 1910s, he was one of the highest paid actors, and among the most popular stars of silent films. It seemed like nothing could stop his shine. But then, following a weekend of partying at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, his friend Virginia Rappe died. It wasn’t immediately clear why Virginia died, but her friend supplied the answer: Virginia had been raped and killed by one of America’s most beloved stars. Then Kristin tells us about the ultimate old-timey kidnapping. If your parents ever warned you about taking candy from strangers, this is why. On July 1, 1874, four-year-old Charley Ross and his six-year-old brother Walter were playing in their front yard when two men pulled up in a horse-drawn carriage. The men offered to buy the boys candy and fireworks. Naturally, the boys jumped at the chance. The men took the boys on a long, winding ride. They stopped at a store, and gave Walter 25 cents to buy fireworks. But after Walter made his purchase, he came back outside to find that the men were gone. They’d taken Charley with them. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Charley Ross: Efforts to induce Westervelt to confess — he says, ‘search the Catholic Institutions,’” The Tennessean “Among the missing: Charley Ross,” by Jay Robert Nash for The Tampa Tribune “A notorious 19th century kidnapping in Brooklyn,” by Michael Pollak for The New York Times “‘JonBenet’ case of its time — 1874,” by Jeff Gammage for The Philadelphia Inquirer “Little Charley Ross,” The St. Albans Advertiser “The story of Charley Ross,” ushistory.org “The disappearance of Charley Ross,” by Steven Casale for The Lineup  In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Fatty Arbuckle and the Death of Virginia Rappe” by Denise Noe, The Crime Library “The Skinny on the Fatty Arbuckle Trial” by Gilbert King, Smithsonian “Roscoe Arbuckle” wikipedia.org

Week 2 Awards Me Cleo (most points) 2 Jimmys betterthen1 -163 McLovin (least points) Deny till ya die - 78 Biggest Loser (highest losing points) Bathtub Admirals- 143 Helen Keller (most bench points) Stranger with Candy - Emmanuel Sanders 25pts (would have given Jameson the W) Size doesn’t matter (slimmest margin of victory) Straight Cash Homie - 6pts over Some Other Guy. Fred OBannion Beatdown of the week Safe Auto by 40 over #Thoughtidbebetter Double Doink of the Week (inactive starter) Homeless again this week, way to be active fellas. Straight Cash Homie storms back Monday night for the 6 point win by way of 26 of OBJ and 21 from Lev Bell. Stranger with Candy followed up his magnificent week with a dud, In Breesus We Trust rode 26 by Zeke for the seven point win. Defending Champ Deuces 2 The Rooster had big performances from SNF and MNF to seal the lopsided affair with Deny Till Ya Die, winning by 22pts. Significant injuries are piling up for Cornelius’s team, tyreek hill last week, Big Ben this week. The loss of Big Ben decided this one in favor of Porn Stache to the tune of 10pts. #thoughtidbebetter racked up lack lusters performances all through the lineup, while Safe auto had big performance after big performance and ran away with this one early Sunday afternoon, delivering the Beatdown of the week, winning by 40. As expected all things in the universe got back into proper alignment as I got on the winning track, scoring the most points of the week, which was needed as Bathtub Admirals scored the third highest points this week, patriots defense got the big shutout bonus and dominated the community college club Miami Dolphins and sealed my victory. Running down the standings as of week two. In Breesus We Trust and Deuces 2 the Rooster lead the standings at 2-0. The basement dwellers at 0-2 are Cornelius’s team and deny till ya die. The other 8 of us are tied at 1-1. Matchup of the week of Is In Breesus We Trust vs Deuces 2 the Rooster, so somebody is taking their first loss. Projections have Breesus walking away with this one 144-123 giving Deuces 2 the Rooster 34% chance of winning. Porn Stache v Deny till ya die this week, projections have porn Stache winning by 3, we shall see if Deny till ya die can pick up his first win. Stranger with Candy goes against Some other guy this week. Projections have stranger with Candy getting back to his winning ways, but projections are tight. We shall see if Some other guys does with Brees our for the next six weeks. Straight cash homie vs safe Auto, straight cash homie finally won last week, but projections have him taking another loss this week, by two touchdowns. Straight cash homie will have the last say on this matchup with the only player in this matchup on Monday night. Bathtub Admirals goes up against #ithoughtidbebetter, projections have #ithoughtidbebetter taking the W by 15, if you’ve been following along at home, the projections haven’t been very accurate, so we will see. Bathtub Admirals has both his RB going Monday night. 2 Jimmys bettetthen1 faces off with Cornelius’s team and is projected to win this matchup. Cornelius has some roster decisions to make. Cornelius has a couple guys going Monday night but I’ll pry have the W wrapped up behind Sunday night football kicks off.

On today's show we talk to actor Maria Thayer. Originally from Oregon and then Minnesota, Maria's first major role was as Tammi Littlenut, Jerri Blank's best friend, on the incredible show Strangers With Candy. Since then, she's been in awesome project after awesome project including Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Arrested Development, and lately she's been co-starring in Chris Elliott's amazing Adult Swim show Eagleheart. In mid-August, Maria stopped by my Harlem studio to talk about childhood crushes, god as a terrorist, logic and meaning, synchronicity and complexity, her evangelical mother and libertine father, guns and pornography, social possibilities, and the chance that I may have discouraged a number of students from pursuing their dreams. And in "Andy's Learnin' Corner", I talk with my friend Ellena Chmielewski about crystals and energy - super fascinating!Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, and follow me on Twitter!
